I’ll never take a visit to @capitolrecords for granted. Some of my earliest memories are being in #StudioA with dad while he recorded for the label. The studios are intensely magical with so much creative energy and original relics such as the historic piano Nat King Cole recorded with, Frank Sinatra’s recording booth stool, Billy Preston’s piano bench, and original Beatles acetates. Now, if I could only get down into the echo chambers way underground. 🎧 🎼🎵🎶🎙

One of the highlights working at Raliegh Studios in 2005 was seeing Burt get out of a car and walk towards the set of SUNDAY MORNING SHOOTOUT. He was larger than life in those tinited shades and sports coat. You bet woman AND men were equally exasperated catching a glimpse of this true movie star personified. It’s extremely poignant that one of his last movies was called “The Last Movie Star”. And yet he was in production on the latest Tarantino movie with and two more films in pre production. He wasn’t ready to go yet. Rest easy bandit.

It has since been demolished, but when the house was first listed, it was a complete time capsule. The home was classic mid century mixed with a Japanese flair. I spent a lot of time there growing up. Seeing the dining room brought back a lot of memories. Those are even the same dining chairs seen with us and Morey, but in the 70s, they were upholstered in orange, Morey’s favorite color. Looking back at these photos you can almost imagine neighbor Paul Trousdale at the bar, with his best friend Don "The Beachcomber" Gannt pouring, and Morey telling jokes. And there was always delicious candy on that table. (I never could resist). I’ve always been obsessed with the green bamboo wallpaper in the breakfast room and have been searching for original back stock of it for years. Morey passed away in 1997 and the house was put on the market in 2011. I walked through it once when it was first for sale, when ALL the Amsterdams' furniture and memorabilia were still in place. There’s a lovely photo of him and his wife, Kay seen in the photo above the TV. Sadly no buyers saw its potential and it was demolished for a 22 million dollar development. Morey also had a media room where he’s once transferred my parents home movies. He had no idea live Audio was recording him when he transferred them and I can hear him talking with Kaye on the VHS tape he made me which is as priceless as the footage. Miss you Morey! And if anyone knows what potato chip brand he’s opening, please let me know! 🧡

I’m determined to introduce this astounding instrumental song written by Jack Nitzsche to the masses. It unfortunately was never officially released by Jack’s record company in 1966. Jack was experimenting and hired The Wrecking Crew to record this masterpiece. He was hoping it would be used in a James Bond or sci-fi flick, but his record company refused to release it. Jack took it to another label who wanted to butcher the arrangement. Jack understandably refused to have his work rearranged. As a result it was never released, (although it was heard in the opening credits of the controversial faux documentary, “Mondo Bizzaro). This should have been Jack’s biggest accomplishment as a solo recording artist, but sadly it was a missed opportunity. Someone should really license it for something today. It would be ideal for Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” since its got that big Phil Spector, Morricone, surf/ spaghetti western sound. This is the only recording you’ll hear online of this quality. It’s called “SURF FINGER” and I hope it goes to good use after all these years. Take a listen. It’s a knock out. 🎵🎼 🎵

This Malibu summer gathering included Lauren Bacall, Rock Hudson, Natalie Wood, Robert Wagner, Tuesday Weld, Judy Garland, Jane Fonda, Anthony Perkins, & Suzanne Pleshette. It’s a peculiar feeling to miss a time that I never lived through. But it is interesting that two of these divine ladies lived in my condo building at one time. 🤔

3 million! SYFY WIRE diligently recorded all the astonishing winning bids including: $540,000 for the powder blue Skyway Bucket, $230,000 for a Pirates of the Caribbean Entryway Sign, $250,000 for an original Autopia attraction poster, $25,000 for a metal Disneyland Mail Box, $80,000 for the actual Submarine Voyage sea serpent, $370,000 for an original Enchanted Tiki Room Animatronic Jose Bird, $350,000 for a hand-painted Haunted Mansion Stretching Poster, $35,000 for a Space Mountain attraction vehicle, $8,000 for a Frontierland garbage can, $220,000 for a Peter Pan's Flight ride vehicle, $420,000 for a Dumbo The Flying Elephant ride vehicle, $75,000 for a 16-foot-tall Disneyland Hotel Neon Letter "D”, (I believe purchased by David Copperfield), and 620,000 for the yellow People Mover tram. I feel so fortunate to have sat in some of these historic purchases a few weeks back. And how lucky I was to experience it all with Bob Gurr, Disney’s Imagineer who designed most of it. This was a very special day in my life and the chance of a lifetime for many to have a tangible memory of the 'Magic Kingdom’ thanks to the Van Eaton Gallery. #Disneyland #Auction #BobGurr @thatsfromdisneyland #ThatsFromDisneyland

I’ve recently come into a large collection of unpublished slides from this era that I’ll be curating for a new book I’m publishing next year! The photos look like they could have been taken yesterday, but they’re actually close to 50 years old. This will definitely be one of the photos featured. There were several OLD WORLD restaurants around LA.: Westwood, Beverly Hills and the strip. This location later became RED ROCK and today The STATE SOCIAL HOUSE. It’s a miracle this structure is still standing, although it’s making me crave the Crab Aladdin. Love that old mailbox too. ⭐️ #TheOldWorld.

Marilyn had just wrapped the movie and was about to became a huge star! Joe DiMaggio was not happy about this date and called dad and said, “you took Marilyn to a stinkin’ cafe?!!” Meanwhile, the Town Casino was one of the most elegant nightclubs in the country. Joe was probably jealous of all that Guinea charm.

A series of photos taken at the old Century City mall: The Nimoy’s taking a stroll in 1969, Tom Snyder hosting a 1970 KNBC Sunday afternoon special, The famous Jelly Belly cart, a Gayle Hunnicutt fashion shoot, Gary Owens onstage with contestants for the ‘Most Beautiful Ape’ contest during promotion for “Conquest for the Planet of the Apes”, and one of our favorite attractions: Joe Richards, also known as “The Singing Flower Man”. It all took place directly outside Judy’s and Joseph Magnin. You’d never see scenarios like this at the new century city mall which is completely unrecognizable, confusing, and out of scale. They even destroyed one of the original Gateway buildings designed by Welton Beckett (seen in photo #9). There was something intimate and magical about the original which is why moments like this took place. #VintageLosAngeles

Of course we are missing Joyce and I’m so sorry about the recent passing of your father. But your dad was right. Life should continue to be celebrated no matter what and we did just as he wished.
And speaking of history, this property was one of the former homes of Howard Hughes (during the 1930s) and Judy Garland (during the 1950s) And I’m sure there was no coincidence that I was seated with Rabbi, Saban (of the beautifully restored Saban Theatre) and Don Kipper, of @kipstoyland! All such generous, philanthropic people who help keep history alive.
We loved the Prince theme too! 💜
