Making things for the sake of it. So many that will go unseen by the people of the internet. No marketing strategy, no clients to please. This is weird territory. I keep saying it - I need to do this way more often. Making things for the sake of it. So many that will go unseen by the people of the internet. No marketing strategy, no clients to please. I shut myself away in my office on January 7 and cried because I was scared and I wanted this more than anything and I never felt more alone on this road. After shooting weddings for 5 years things had kind of stagnated. I couldn't see the way ahead and I didn't know what would happen after that. On March 7 I held my first meeting in our renovated home studio. On April 7 I left the desk job I had held for the past 14 years (minus the bit in the middle where I was working as a DOP). I had no safety net and no guarantee. I had a handful of beautiful, inspiring, talented humans agree to this thing that was not a sure thing. ...Things have worked out pretty well, with 62 couples having their weddings photographed by my studio this year, and 35 on the books for 2018 already. We incorporated as a company, my friends continued to show up for me. I was able to employ my sister full time. I had nothing this time last year. I sit on the hill at Caba as the sun goes down on the last day of 2017 so full of gratitude for my loves, my friends, my family, and everyone who has said hell yes to love and to Cloud Catcher this year. ❤️❤️❤️

A little spritzed from the ocean slamming the rocks, my butt suitably toasty from settling on a ledge just out of spray's way, I tucked my empty beer bottle into my bag and turned around to see Shaun standing on the headland. I like to think he was watching over me, making sure I was safe, but I'm 98.74 percent sure he was actually watching the surf. Wedding 60/62 for 2017 was last weekend, and because I'm some special brand of sadistic maniac I left the wedding after midnight fresh as a daisy and chatting poor Shaun's head off. I love this job, and sharing it (and this ridiculous adventure that is life) with him is the best thing ever.

We packed overnight bags, the cat, the cat's things, and went to my parents' place while the kitchen got renovated at our home. Two weeks max, we thought. Two weeks quickly became seven. It really diced with my idea of what 'home' is. Our home didn't feel like home, being full of dust and dirt and building materials. My parents place had this faint home-ness to it, being the house that I grew up in, but she had some pretty drastic work done a few years ago and doesn't really resemble the home I remember all that much. But still, I loved this time and being back under the same roof as my parents. Although I couldn't wander the halls with no pants on, being in a house that had other occupants more than half the year as I'm used to at home was pretty great. Trying to find equilibrium between working, not working, rest and exercise, having a place to hang my proverbial hat and bluebell's literal leash made me realise that I feel at home everywhere and nowhere all at once, which probably has more to do with the rusty cogs turning inside my head than anything externally. Also, those seven weeks completely slipped through my fingers without me even realising.

Me (centre, hello yes I am a closet redhead and no I don't have a soul) to my left is one of the best second shooters I've ever seen. ___________

To my right is my new studio manager. This is a photo of me not wanting to share. I NEVER want to share. Well, one of the things I have realised is that I can't do this alone. I wanted to, believe me. I'm the petulant toddler flapping her arms and demanding 'I do it myseeeelllllffff'. Mostly for reasons of ego. Look at the martyr running this entire business on her own. See how she quite literally burns for her work! Oh what strength and fortitude! Such a boss!
_________

Well, scuse my French and shit, but fuck that. I've realised this year that the thing that brings me the most joy is seeing the people around me realise how awesome and able and talented they really are. When you remove the ego, all this other great shit appears in its place. I've had to relinquish control, replace it with trust, and share all the things. But that's okay. We're building a thing here, and by some strange twist of fate the two dickbutts I am most genetically similar to are along for the ride. Today the studio took on its second full time employee, my sister Alex, and she's going to whip us all into line. Proud sister moment! #cantbelievethiswastenyearsagoalready #yesimprettyyoung #justababy

I handed the nice girl behind the desk my company registration. 'So, when did you go full time with the photography thing?' the business banker asked me today. 'Oh umm, I've been working for about five years but only went full time last April'. She looked over to Shaun 'but you don't work for yourself do you? Like, you work for a big company?' Shaun the Aussiest bloke I know shakes his head 'nah, yeah I'm an employee' Business banking lady smiled at me 'oh well that's a nice bit of security for you to make the jump to full time then!' Shaun pat my leg and said with a proud grin 'she didn't need it, though!' And with that, my heart exploded all over the capalaba branch of my bank. Pic of Shaun hiding in waves off Tallows post-elopement photo-ing gig on Friday because bank photos would be weird, right. #cloudcatchersincorporated

After our wedding, I pulled the succulents out of my bouquet and threw them in a blue plastic bucket with some dirt. Then we went overseas. Then my grandfather died. Then eventually life picked back up and the succulents stayed in their bucket down the side of the house. 1,222 days later I noticed they have started blooming these little yellow flowers. I have decided this is some sort of marriage-ometer and we are doing okay. Otherwise wedding flowers wouldn't start to bloom 1,222 days later, right? Tonight we were laughing at how we have ended up here and how we are a terrible mismatch for each other. When you have been with someone since their late teens it's kind of hard to reconcile that person with who they are now. There's no guarantees that your partner will always be the same person, I guess. Through all of our iterations, we just keep showing up for one another. Tomorrow we will be back in that place where we met 4,408 days ago. When etnies skate shoes and sweat bands were cool. When shaun had a mullet and I had red hair. When bundy rum out of the bottle seemed like a good idea. I'm glad so much has changed, actually. Especially the mullet thing.
