For weeks we had talked to the kids about visiting the real Pride Rock @boranaconservancy but I had neglected to mention that it was highly unlikely Simba and friends would be present. This resulted in much sulkiness and a refusal to take proper pictures despite the half hour hike. Me yelling, “you will regret this forever, why do you have to ruin everything” was probably poor parenting and did little to allay the situation. And then they started throwing themselves at the edge of the cliff in an attempt to see if perhaps the rest of the animal kingdom were bowing at the bottom to the strains of the Circle of Life. At this point one parent sensibly decided it was time we ended this part of the proceedings while the other sulked all the way back down because her kids had ruined her potentially perfect Instagram picture. So I am eternally grateful to @dannyarafa for his nimble photoshop work on this picture. I LOVE it. ❤️🦁

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS POSTS: I hope the kids remember being surrounded by a herd of elephants at dawn, the little babies being cajoled along to a nearby watering hole. The cheetah that sauntered languidly right in front of our cruiser and the squeals of delight when we spotted two tiny cubs scrambling behind her. I hope they remember refusing to shhhh as a lion approached at sunset, but being stricken into silence when it stared straight into the open car, opening its mouth as if to roar only to yawn and stroll away. How silly to think the king of beasts would believe us worthy of his attention. I hope they remember hiking through the forest, Momo insisting on wearing his entirely unsuitable Crocs even as he navigated steep and slippery terrains and Maya loudly singing ‘This is Me’ off key all the way to the secret waterfall. I hope Maya not only remembers but sustains the fearlessness that had her leap off an alarmingly high rocky ledge into the freezing waters of Mount Kenya’s melted glaciers. I hope they remember all the Swahili words that Ben our incredible, patient, tireless, generous @boranalodge guide taught them. And how Momo inherited the nickname Mamba (which means crocodile) which infuriated him at first but became a fait accompli when Ben and the entire team at the lodge started using it. I hope they never ever forget horse riding across the wide open plains of East Africa as a tower of giraffes sashayed past so close we could almost reach out and touch them. I hope they remember taking a bath on the edge of a mountain top beneath an endless sky full of stars, and then falling asleep by a roaring fire as the sound of cicadas seeped through the silence. But even if, as is most likely, all these magical memories slip through their little fingers, I suspect, that something intangible has happened in their imaginations, far greater than any one moment. An understanding of the possibilities, the immeasurable size of things, the adventures to be had. // When I think I have too much work for impractical adventures, I hope I AM THE ONE who remembers Maya racing to her grandad when we got back, “I want to see all the places in the world now,” she told him.

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS POST: I had been on safari before, a decade ago, in South Africa’s Kruger Park - a wonderful experience all be it hampered by the countless congregations of tourists. I didn’t want that for the kids, so – once again contrary to convention - I avoided the far more popular Masai Mara with its incredible concentration of game, and opted for Laikipia’s Borana Conservancy - a 35,000-acre working ranch at an awe-inspiring altitude of 6500 feet on the edge of the Samangua Valley. On clear days, Mount Kenya can be seen soaring in the distance. Borana is also one of the few lodges I researched that seemed eager to offer very young children a safari experience - unlike many other destinations which would begrudgingly accept them (a kind of ‘if you must’ mentality). Indeed a whole host of lodges prohibit under 8s or under 12s all together. But then Borana is a family run concern – having been in the Deyer family for three generations. The current generation still pours their passions into the land, a rare accomplishment, and one that imbues your experience with an authenticity far removed from the tourist trails - as if you’re visiting with intrepid family friends.

The Lodge itself consists of eight thatched cottages hewn into the mountainside by local artisans. An endless expanse of undulating African bush stretches out in all directions, all the way to the horizon, and nestled in our room, it feels like we are suspended somewhere between heaven and earth.

When I sit with my children on our terrace at sunrise, gearing up for the early morning game drive, sipping at steaming hot coffee from flasks placed on our doorstep (and munching on the cornflakes they have scoured out especially for the kids), it feels in fact, that perhaps this is indeed heaven. God’s country - wild, untouched, ethereal. We are guests at nature’s behest, beholden to the majestic beasts that roam and rule the land... TO BE CONTINUED.

As our 12 seater propeller plane bumps and jolts a little alarmingly somewhere over East Africa, I wonder if perhaps I should have paid heed to every piece of travel advice I’d read suggesting saving safari for when one’s kids are at least in their early teens. My youngest, four year-old Momo, suddenly lets out a piercing shriek, “LOOK IT’S A GIRAAAAFFE” and everyone cranes for a sight of this creature strolling across the plains just as our plane lands into an ‘airstrip’. We are all enraptured. But only my little one lacks the inhibition to express the full gamut of his excitement. FUCK THE TRAVEL ADVICE.
Lewa ‘airport’ consists quite literally of a small empty patch of land right in the middle of the wilderness; a three-walled thatched hut with a wooden bench, and a secondary smaller hut, which is the bathroom, naturally. Maya, my six-year old and her little brother strain against their seatbelts, desperate to burst out of this flying contraption that has landed them seemingly in the middle of Lion King territory. Well actually not ‘seemingly’ at all. I chose Kenya’s Borana Conservancy specifically because it is Lion King land, having inspired the landscapes of the Disney cartoon and because it lays claim to the real Pride Rock. I figured if I’m going to take the kids way out of any reasonable comfort zone I may as well root our adventure in a story they are familiar with... TO BE CONTINUED. *****************************
Side note: This Eid marked the first time in five years I completely disconnected - metaphorically, literally, and digitally. It was fucking glorious. For a start I was reintroduced to the sound of my own thoughts, and all the words come flowing. There was a time - long before CEO - when all I did was weave stories and that is when I feel most like me. I slept wonderfully and didn’t have a single dream that involved racing against time to finish some implausible task. But most importantly I discovered that my kids are quite possibly the coolest humans in the world. My reality demands connection round the clock, but I plan to punctuate my life with more of deliriously dazzling silences. After all, the world is still somehow spinning.

NOW IN VOGUE UK @britishvogue - THE WOMEN DRIVING THE ARAB WORLD’S DIGITAL REVOLUTION (link in bio) // When I was a teenager my bedroom walls were plastered in pages ripped out from @britishvogue - glossy images of glamorous women doing gregarious things. Throughout my 20s as I built my career, first as a writer and eventually the managing editor of a glossy magazine, Vogue UK was my benchmark and bible. So, you will forgive me for fucking milking this - but it feels like a momentous thing that today I find myself INSIDE the pages of this magical magazine that has so shaped my imagination. It is even more special that it is a story of strong Arab women. Those women on my walls were wonderful and aspirational but they belonged to a different world. Much as I tried I could not see myself reflected - not in the way they looked nor in the challenges they negotiated. I could not find myself in the books I devoured, the movies I watched or the music I listened to. It was the absence I think of something or someone to relate to (long before the days of social media and digital inter-connectivity) that left me with an unquenchable need to tell my own stories, and eventually the stories of so many others through @cairoscene, @elfaslaonline, @startupsceneme, @scenenoise and @scenearabia. We are the tales we are told. Our identities shaped by the narratives we are exposed to. The stories matter. So I am so fucking excited and humbled and thrilled and honored to be part of a story - alongside @freiha @gazaskygeeks and @lareinagowns - about Arab women at the forefront of an innovative industry. Most of all I am really happy for my 15 year-old self whose mind would have been blown by an article, like this, in VOGUE. This one’s for her.

Did you know you there is no way to actually tell the difference between a boy penguin and a girl penguin? You have to DNA test them! They have four toes, and the Gentoo penguin can swim as fast as a dolphin. They can’t fly because unlike other birds their bones are solid like humans and not hollow. And also, we really need to stop using straws and plastic bags because they hurt the environment and harm the penguins. These are just some of the facts the kids have been excitedly reciting all day, and they’re now curled up in bed with their penguin plushies dreaming of waddles. But here’s what impressed me the most about the experience @mallofegypt @ski.egypt - the amazing, experienced and passionate team of trainers and carers who have flown in to Egypt especially to look after our feathery new friends. We met Helena (human not penguin) today who was an absolute gem with the kids, firm when it came to ensuring they stuck to the strict rules of behavior when around the birds but also fun, engaging and able to spark their imaginations. The facilities - which I was lucky enough to get a closer-than-most look at - are state of the art. It’s such a breath of fresh air that something like this is being done in Egypt with exceptional expertise, profound respect for the penguins (who were originally born in an aquarium in Japan), professionalism and world-class standards. // This is NOT a paid for ad or a sponsored post (you will notice that on the rare occasion I do them I will always use the #ad). I did however totally harass my client @mallofegypt to hook me up so I could convince the kids that mummy is cool. *Plushies were purchased on account of the all mighty tantrum in the gift shop which because of working mummy guilt I am not equipped to deal with in a responsible parental manner.

Maya is growing up in the loudly beating heart of an extended family, every one of us aggressively trying to impart our own brand of wisdom. But if she takes heed of only one lesson, I hope it is this - BE GOOD. But not the superficial ‘good girl’ goodness publicly preached across the Arab World. I am not talking of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. I am not talking of short skirts and curfews and other such nonsense. Because I know she will do what she wants (I certainly did) and there will be nothing I can do to stop her. She will learn her lessons on her own and I just hope I have the presence of mind to grit my teeth and remember that rebellions of the heart and body are needed and necessary. But what I will insist on is that she ‘be good’ in her intentions. Always. Good to people. Even when - ESPECIALLY when - they are not good to her. Because generosity of spirit, forgiveness (even when it is not asked) and most importantly subsequent forgetfulness are not a gift to others but to yourself. Some will mistake those qualities for weakness. Let them. There is is no greater weapon than the element of surprise that comes from being wrongfully underestimated. It is exactly those type of people who know not the strength it takes NOT to retaliate in kind but instead to be the bigger person, to rid yourself of resentment that turns to bitterness and instead invest all your energy and emotion into being the best possible version of yourself. Success and contentment (whatever that success may look like for YOU) are the greatest revenge. So I hope she is the bigger person always, even when every iota of her being just wants to slap the stupid bitch. Because karma is a bigger bitch, and it’s wise to have her on your side. // This is an adapted extract from an article I wrote when I found out I was pregnant with a daughter and which features in my second book - Fe-mail 2 - published 2012. Maya turned six last May and I turn 38 next week. I still feel exactly the same way.

Actual amount of beach time left: 20 minutes. A “quick weekend away” with the kids is always a good idea.

We made waffles without baking soda (because clearly baking soda is a huge stretch of imagination when I can barely remember toilet paper). We played with the overpriced LEGO sets I was strong-armed into purchasing yesterday when I made the terrible mistake of being in the same mile radius of a toy shop. Maya let me be the LEGO “friend” which is very generous of her considering Momo wasn’t even allowed a speaking part and had been relegated to the role of “sandstorm” which entailed him throwing the plastic wrapping the LEGO came in onto our figurines while making whooshing sounds. Maya and I then fought for a good two hours about her having a bath upon which she declared that she was starving and would only deem to bathe once she had eaten. When I refused to pander;she ran away to grandad’s house (downstairs) and with tears streaming down her face, and anguished lolling about in the manner of someone about to faint, announced I was starving her. Naturally my father responded by preparing her a veritable feast before lecturing me on my sub-par parenting skills, having apparently believed that I was indeed withholding food my child. Momo meanwhile started harassing everyone to purchase ice from him - no one can be quite sure how, when or why this started or indeed why he was charging some of us six pence per ice cube and others ten dollars (quite apart from the tremendous price differential the use of different currencies was confusing). Maya did eventually have her bath after which followed a second argument about dressing herself which heralded in even more dramatics because as she explained “you never ever bath me or dress me and then the one time you do, you want me to dress myself!???! I will never love you ever again.” Momo, always ready to leap to his sister’s defense - and apparently having shut down his ice-selling business right on time to join us - announced that he too would never ever love me either, but moreover he would also never be eating kofta again. QUALITY TIME IS AWESOME! How’s your 🐣 weekend?

If there was a glass ceiling that I smashed through, I did so unwittingly. I was just chasing, dreaming, working, relentlessly. Being a woman was never part of the professional narrative in my imagination. But in that I know I am fortunate. I stand on the shoulders of generations of kick-ass women. My maternal grandmother found herself a young divorced woman with three small daughters. She removed the sign on the front door of her apartment that bore her husband’s name and in a then controversial move hammered in a big gold plaque with only HER name. This was her house and her life. Despite no previous work experience, she went on to become one of the first female and one of the most highly sought after directors in Egypt, laying the foundation for our television industry and winning countless awards including being honored by two consecutive Presidents. My mother has fought men, institutions and impossibilities to realize her ambitions or to kick down any hurdles that have ever been put in her family’s way. Mine is a familial legacy of men who stood by and for their women. My paternal grandfather insisted he bring up his only daughter’s young children while she pursued her PhD. My father has spent every day of his life filling my head with outsized dreams and along with them the firm belief that if I work hard enough, and get up every single morning and fight, there is nothing that is unattainable. So for me, it was easy, it was obvious. BUT there are women out there who truly defy the odds, who must imagine, on their own, stories they have never been told. It is to THEM that, this #InternationalWomensDay, @mo4network, dedicates #شغل_نسوان . Share the hashtag and own your story...

Momo whined incessantly because I am apparently “so boring” for making him leave the house - and the giant paddle he’s been carrying around FOR A MONTH - for a fun family day out. Maya kept tugging at us to leave so she could go to the toy shop to spend her tooth fairy money. We paid for our children’s silence with fizzy-drink ice-floats. And then I forced everyone to take this family photo where we all really love each other so I could post on Instagram and tag my client @cocacolaegypt. All in all, another day of winning at life. #جربها_بكوكاكولا

I do NOT know how to balance. I suspect no one actually does, and we need to understand this fact lest people start legit thinking that it's possible to be all girl boss and boss mum while doing six am yoga and eating seasonally and cooking regularly and hiking up Mount Machi Picchu with your babies strapped to your back before taking the perfect insta-sunset shot. This is NOT a thing. The reality is messy and haphazard at best. For me at least. Quality time is prioritized over quarrels so discipline is compromised. I am entirely dependent on my mother to remember things like nail cutting and hair washing while school trip forms are never signed on time. Any modicum of social life is scrunched up and flushed down the toilet of time because really if I actually finish work before ten pm I would clearly rather spend time with the kids OR watching Meghan Markle in old episodes of Suits on Netflix and repeatedly saying things to Yusef like, "Do you reckon Prince Harry has seen this kissing scene." And that's not even getting into my erratic leadership style that is all Steve Jobs in my head but in reality is probably more Steve Carell from The Office. Then there's the fact that five years in I'm still not entirely sure what it is a CEO is supposed to do. But, this is my best fucking life. With three weirdos in my giant custom bed, and a mad rush to find the missing toy camel named Donkey every morning who must be taken to school along with a giant paddle they found god knows where, and 200 people waiting for me to tell them what to do everyday and me being none the fucking wiser. But as a wise man recently told me - perspective is difficult but perspective is everything. And ever since, whenever I feel myself getting overwhelmed I find one of my small humans to squeeze and remind them that I love them more than the whole wide world even if I have to travel (again) first thing in the morning. So no I don't balance shit - but I am slowly learning to not give a shit.

For most of this month I harbored this fantasy that my 2018 feed would be all perfect poses, lush lighting and momentous moments. As such I had been avoiding posting till I got the money shot. But then I remembered I'm a real human who also exists outside of instagram which is cumbersome. So here's a blurry mirror selfie instead in which every single member of my family does their best to aesthetically disappoint me.

Do not for a second let the kids' faces deceive you. They are positively though secretly overflowing with Christmas spirit and are thrilled to be in London and deeply appreciative of the great lengths I have gone to in order to extract myself from the office right bang in the middle of December to spend this quality time with them. If you are reading this and are yet to embark on the magical journey that is parenting, I can't recommend it highly enough. Kids are awesome.
