They need to be able to close their hand around the food and it needs to be long enough (around 5 to 6 cm) for your baby to hold with some sticking out ... It may be bear initially to place the food directly onto your baby’s high chair tray rather than a bowl or plate and put a splash mat under the high chair so that you can recycle foods that haven’t quite made it to their required destination !

Suitable for freezing .

Babies can be introduced to a mild curry from around 8 months . This fruity curry with apricots will soon get your little one tucking into a Vindaloo ! In fact one of the most popular recipes in my range of chilled and frozen ready meals in supermarkets is my Chicken Tikka Masala... A x

1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 onion, sliced
1/2 red pepper, deseeded and diced
200g butternut squash
200g chicken thigh, diced
1/2 tsp fresh ginger, grated
1/2 tsp mild korma curry powder
3 dried apricots, chopped
175ml weak chicken stock

Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the onion, pepper, squash and chicken. Brown over the heat for 2 minutes.
2 Add the curry powder and ginger and fry for 30 seconds.
3 Add the stock and apricots . Bring up to the boil. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
4 Blend to a chunky or smooth consistency.

MAKES 4 PORTIONS

Suitable for freezing .. .

1 tsp sunflower oil
1 shallot, diced
2 carrots , peeled and diced
1 small sweet potato , peeled and diced
20Oml weak vegetable stock
100g broccoli florets
100g cod cut into chunks
20g Parmesan cheese , freshly grated

1 Heat the oil in a saucepan. Add the shallot, carrot and sweet potato and fry for 5 minutes .
2 Add the stock, cover and simmer for 12 minutes.
3 Add the cod and broccoli and simmer for 5 minutes .
4 Blend to the desired consistency.. .

Infant formula milk is made from cow’s milk so this will need to be replaced with a special formula if your baby is allergic to cow’s milk ... Always consult your GP or a registered dietitian to determine which formula is best for your baby or carry on with breastfeeding ... .
Early diagnosis is important because these types of formula don’t taste good but the earlier you introduce them the more likely they are to be accepted by your baby. .

Suitable for freezing undecorated

175g self raising flour
50g brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp mixed spice
1 tsp ground ginger
100g butternut squash, peeled and grated
50g raisins
30g dried apricots, chopped

125ml sunflower oil
100ml maple syrup
2 large eggs

Decoration
Blueberries
Dried apricots

1 Preheat the oven to 180C Fan. Line a 12 home muffin tin with muffin cases.
2 Mix the flour , sugar, baking powder, spices, squash, raisins and apricots together in a bowl.
3 Mix the oil, maple syrup and egg together in a jug.
4 Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and beat together . Spoon into the cases . Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden and well risen. Leave to cool on a wire rack.
5 To Decorate. Make the ears out of halves dried apricots . Make a nose out of one whole apricot and half a blueberry and add blueberry eyes .

MAKES 12 MUFFINS

1 ripe pear, peeled, cored and chopped
40g blueberries

1 Put the Apple and pear into a heavy based saucepan and cook over a low heat for 4 minutes .

Mealtime inspiration is at an all time low at 7.00am when you are trying to wake your children and get them ready for school so here’s something from my new book ‘Real Food Kids Will Love ‘ You can make these in advance for a tasty addition to your child’s lunchchbox or a healthy snack ... .The muffins can be frozen once cooked and stored for 2 months they will defrost in the lunchbox so just take them out of the freezer when you need them .. .

Suitable from 9 months
Suitable for freezing
175g self raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 eggs, beaten
2 tbsp maple syrup
6 tbsp milk
59g Parmesan cheese, grated
3 spring onions, chopped
75g carrot, grated
A pinch of salt
8 soft sundried tomatoes in oil.

1 Preheat the oven to 180C and line a 12 home muffin tin with 10 paper cases.
2 Mix the flour and baking powder in a large bowl then add all of the remaining ingredients and stir until well combined (avoid over mixing)
3 Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases and bake in the oven for 18 to 20 minute until well risen and lightly golden .
4 Take the muffins out of the oven and remove them from the muffin tin and leave to cool on a wire ra k .

We did a survey on weaning and found that 62% of parents do not know what nutrients their babies need when it comes to weaning .. Despite leading busy lives 9 out of 10 parents make their baby’s food from scratch however there is confusion over when to introduce key foods like meat, fish, cheese, eggs into their baby’s diet .
A lot of parents aren’t aware why introducing solids at around 6 months is so important as milk alone will not give them the critical nutrients they need, especially iron and essential fatty acids and just feeding a baby fruit and vegetables isn’t sufficient .

I put a lot of research into my latest book . From 6 months to 2 years babies need more iron than at any other time in their life . In fact you should give iron rich foods twice a day. Pouches or jars which contain meat are not always good sources of iron as the meat content is too low typically between 8 and 10% so my book gives you plenty of ways to introduce tasty iron rich recipes like my mini meatballs or my tasty lentil purée with sweet potato to ensure they are not iron deficient .

Similarly the only really decent source of essential fatty acids which are so important for your baby’s brain and visual development , nervous system and healthy skin is oily fish like salmon .. It’s would be very difficult to ensure that your baby was getting the easential fatty acids they need if you don’t make foods with oily fish yourself like my tasty salmon with tomato, carrot and cheese or my Salmon, Squash and Kale Balls.

I am also aware that many parents have little ones who suffer from allergies so I have makes my recipes flexible and give alternative ingredients to make them for example dairy , gluten or egg free.

I wrote my books after losing my first child and then being blessed with quite literally the worlds worst eater . The ‘Why’you do something is so important and my legacy is the work I do to help other parents ensure that they are giving their babies the best start in life ... A x

160g pitted dates, chopped
160g cashew nuts
100g raisins
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 tsp orange extract

To coat
Cocoa powder
Dessicated sprinkles
Chocolate sprinkles
1 Put all of the ingredients in a food processor with 4 tablespoons of boiling water and blitz until the mixture is finely chopped and well blended .
2 Transfer the mixture to a bowl and shape it into 15 to 20 balls.
3 Roll the Balls in cocoa powder or dessicated coconut. Chill in a plate in the fridge for at least 1 hour to firm up.

There is a report out today that parents are excluding kids with food allergies from coming to their children’s parties because they are worried about them having a serious reaction.. In the report by Asda 54% of mums and dads admit not inviting sensitive kids to after school events or parties to make catering easier ... This is shocking . If you have a child with a food allergy what is your experience ... ?

Childhood allergies seem to be on the increase so it’s not surprising that parents are nervous about introducing foods that could cause problems.
.
The previous advice was to delay introducing allergenic foods like eggs and peanut products.
However there is excellent evidence that introducing eggs and peanut products from 6 months may actually reduce the risk of these food allergies.
.
In 2015 the LEAP study (learning early about peanut allergy) found that babies who were at particular risk of suffering a food allergy who ate peanut products between the age of 4 and 11 months had a 70% reduced risk of developing an allergy to peanuts compared with children who ate them for the first time when they were older .

The advice now is that you should introduce these foods from 6 months unless there is a high risk in which case consult your doctor and get your baby allergy tested.

Specific food allergies aren’t inherited but a tendency to get allergies like eczema , hay fever or asthma is known as stood and can be inherited particularly if both parents have this tendency .

In my new book WEANING I have done a lot of research into food allergies , there are a lot of dairy free recipes and I show how to adapt the recipes for babies and children with allergies .

It seems some people think it’s not a level playing field as she had already taken part in an episode of BBC1s cooking show The Box. What do you think ... it was certainly impressive ... This is a super delicious foolproof recipe for biscuits that you are going to love ... it wouldn’t make me star baker but it’s one of my favourite cookies .. A x

Suitable from one year
Suitable for freezing .

130g soft butter
100g light brown sugar
120g golden syrup
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
250g plain flour
50g porridge oats
25g pecans, chopped
50g dried apricots, chopped
50g dried cranberries, chopped
1 egg yolk
1 tsp mixed spice
2 tsp ground ginger

1 Preheat the oven to 180C Fan. Line 3 baking sheets with non stick baking paper.
2 Measure the butter , sugar, golden syrup into a bowl and whisk until well mixed and fluffy. Add the remaining ingredients and a pinch of salt.
3 Roll into 30 balls. Place on the baking sheets leaving space between the balls and flatten down using your hand to flatten them out.
4 Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until lightly golden brown . Cool on a wire rack.

MAKES 30 COOKIES

This is a recipe from my new book WEANING which has recioes flexible for traditional or baby led weaning and babies with allergies ! It can be tricky getting little ones to enjoy eating green veggies but kale is such a bona fuse superfood it would be a pity if it was off the menu. That’s why I created these super veggie croquettes .... Suitable from 7 months
Suitable for freezing
2 tbsp sunflower oil
1 small onion, chopped
100g mushrooms, chopped
1 medium carrot, grated
20g kale, chopped
1 garlic clove, crushed
150g baking potato, pricked
50g fresh breadcrumbs or wheat or gluten free breadcrumbs
30g Cheddar cheese or dairy free cheese, grated
Plain flour or gluten free flour for coating

1 Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan. Add the onion, mushrooms, carrot , kale and garlic and fry for 5 minutes over a medium heat . Leave to cool.
2 Cook the potatoes in a microwave for 10 minutes until soft . Leave to cool, then scoop out the potato flesh into a bowl.
3 Add the cooked vegetables, breadcrumbs and cheese and mix together until blended. Shape into 14 small croquettes and roll in the flour.
4 Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil in a frying pan. Fry the croquettes for 3 to 4 minutes until golden on all sides and cooked through. Drain on kitchen paper and leave to cool down a little before serving .

MAKES 14 CROQUETTES

I had a lot of requests for finger foods and veggie burgers so here’s a brand new recipe bursting with nutrients that I think your little one’s and the whole family will enjoy. Cannelini beans are one of the best sources of non [email protected] and they are packed with minerals and antioxidants .

Suitable from 7 months
Suitable for freezing
1 tbsp olive oil
1 leek, sliced
1 medium carrot peeled and grated
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 x 400g tin cannelloni beans, drained
20g chopped kale
1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
25g Parmesan or vegetarian Italian hard cheese
60g Panko breadcrumbs

1 Hear the oil in a saucepan. Add the leek, carrot and garlic and fry for 5 minutes.
2 Leave to cool. Put the vegetables, beans, cheese, kale, basil and half of the breadcrumbs into a food processor. Process until finely chopped.
3 Shape into 12 sausage shapes or mini burgers. Roll in the remaining breadcrumbs.
4 Heat a little oil in a frying pan. Add the sausages and brown for 5 to 8 minutes until crispy and heated through.

MAKES 12 VEGGIE CROQUETTES OR SAUSAGES

Managed to get a sworn fish hater to come up and try it and she really liked it and asked for more which just goes to show that there are always ways to prepare something in a different way that might tempt fussy children .

My kids didn’t like cauliflower until I roasted it in the oven and drizzled it with vinaigrette . Spiralised sweet potato baked in the oven drizzled with a little olive oil and seasoning for is another winner with veggie haters

I’m not usually a fan of Beetroot but am very partial to the Dairy Free Chocolate Beetroot Cake in the book ..! Really enjoyed the festival - so many artisan stalls with delicious food ... my lunch was a Tuna Poke Bowl with Henry my very charming host who looks after my PR @bluebirdbooksforlife ...

There is nothing more satisfying than a one pot recipe - just chuck everything in and leave it to do it’s own thing whilst you spend time with the kids or get on with something else. . You can replace the wine with chicken stock but the wine adds a lovely flavour and the alcohol evaporates in the cooking .
If like me you are having friends over this Bank Holiday Weekend everyone will love this and you won’t have had to spend hours in the kitchen. ... A x

1 roasting chicken
Herb Butter
25g soft unsalted butter
2 tbsp chives, chopped

1 tbsp olive oil
2 banana shallots, thickly sliced
300g butternut squash, peeled and cut into cubes
200g parsnips, peeled and diced
300g baby new potatoes (left whole)
2 garlic cloves, crushed
150 ml white wine
300ml chicken stock
200ml apple juice
1 tbsp fresh herbs thyme or sage

Preheat the oven to 200C Fan.
Make the herb butter by mixing soft butter under the skin. Season the chicken..
.
Heat the oil in a shallow casserole pan. Add the shallots , Squash, parsnips. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes . Add the garlic and fry for 15 seconds.

Add the wine (the alcohol evaporate in the cooking - you could Add more chicken stock but the wine adds a delicious flavour ). Transfer to the oven. Roast for one hour, then add the apple juice . Baste the chicken and return back to the oven for another 20 minutes until cooked through.

Carve into slices and serve with the vegetables .

MAKES 6 PORTIONS

Make these delicious no cook energy balls this weekend They make a delicious and nutritious snack and children will enjoy helping you roll them into little balls... .

Suitable from one year .
100g pitted dares
50g apricots
100ml water

100g porridge oats
40g pecans , chopped
60g apricots, chopped
20g cocoa powder
2 tbsp maple syrup
3 tbsp sunflower oil
30g Rice Krispies

1 Put the dates. 50g of apricots and 100 ml of water into a saucepan. Bring up to the boil then simmer for 5 minutes. Leave to stand for 10 minutes.
2 Pour the contents of the saucepan into a food processor. Blitz for a few seconds until finely chopped. Add the remaining ingredients and a pinch of salt . Blitz until the mixture has come together
3 Remove the blade, then shape into small balls.
4 Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes .

MAKES APPROX 28

Suitable from one year
Suitable for freezing
350g sweet potato
75g brown mushrooms, finely chopped
85g carrots, grated
4 spring onions, sliced
100g form tofu, diced
50g crushes Marta or Jacob’s Crackers
2 tsp soy sauce
30g Italian hard cheese , grated (you can use Parmesan if you are not vegetarian )
Plain flour for coating
Sunflower oil

1 Prick the sweet potato with a fork and bake it in an oven preheated to 200C / 400F for 35 to 40 minutes until soft.
2 When the sweet Potato is cool, cut it open and scoop out the flesh into a bowl. Add all the remaining ingredients except the flour and oil . Stir to combine and shape into about 8 medium or 15 small burgers
3 Coat the burgers in flour . Heat a little oil in a frying pan over a medium heat . Fry the burgers in batches for about 3 minutes each side until golden.

MAKES 8 medium or 15 SMALL BURGERS

Suitable for freezing

1 tbsp sunflower oil
1 small onion , chopped
1/2 tsp fresh ginger , grated
1 1/2 tsp Mild Korma Curry Paste
100 ml unsalted or weak chicken stock
4 dried apricots roughly chopped
150g butternut squash, chopped
1 small chicken breast , cut into small cubes

1 Heat the oil and sauté the onion and ginger for 4 to 5 minutes until softened but not coloured . Add the curry paste and sauté for 30 seconds.
2 Add the remaining ingredients, bring to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and simmer for about 12 minutes or until the squash is tender and the chicken cooked through.
3 Puree or chop depending on the consistency for your baby .
MAKES 4 PORTIONS

Went to see an amazing film @lacma Los Angeles County Museum of Art following 5 puppies 🐶 🐶🐶🐶🐶 and how they were trained to become guide dogs ... So much love and energy goes into training them - some make the grade and others have a ‘career change’ .

I shed a few tears for the puppy foster carers along the way when they had to part with their charges but you had to admire how much work and love goes into training these dogs that will one day give a whole new meaning to the life of the visually impaired.

Suitable for feeezing

75g AK mini organic pasta shells
120g butternut squash, peeled and diced
A knob of butter
2 large tomatoes, skinned deseeded and diced
50g baby spinach, chopped
3 tbsp finely grated Parmesan or vegetarian Italian hard cheese
1 clove garlic , crushed

1 Cook the pasta shells in boiling water according to the packet instructions Drain and reserve 4 tbsp of water.
2 Cook the squash in a steamer for 5 minutes .
3 Melt the butter in a saucepan . Add the tomatoes and garlic and fry for one minute . Add the spinach and stir , then add the squash, pasta, water and grated Parmesan. Stir over the heat for 10 seconds .
