This is a figure from my current book “The Complete Contest Prep Guide” (link in profile) showing the typical fad diet cycle. Millions of people engage in this every year but have no idea what they doing to themselves. As I am doing deep dive into the rabbit hole on fat loss research for my next book (general population fat loss book) a few things are becoming very clear.

Every single time you diet and engage in improper weight cycling (aka yo-yo dieting which is different than controlled weight loss and gain) you are activating the body’s self defense system. This system launches a 3 pronged attack to protect you from the perceived threat of starvation.
.
The first prong of the attack is metabolic adaptation to slow your metablolic rate to make energy production more efficient and fat loss more difficult. This is why you eventually plateau on a fat loss diet even though you are eating in what ‘should be’ a deficit.
.
The second prong of the attack is activating genes that increase your body’s ability and capacity to store energy as body fat to ensure the energy reserves are restored.
.
The final prong of this self defense system is to create biological adaptations that resist FUTURE weight loss. One major one is fat cell hyperplasia (increase in fat cell number) that is observed when weight is regained too rapidly in the immediate post diet period (first few weeks post diet).
.
So powerful is the effect of weight cycling on activating the body’s self defense system that research has shown subjects who engaged in 2 bouts of weight cycling (lose weight, regain it, lose it again, regain it again) experienced this self defense system... powerfully. During the second cycle weight loss occurred at half the rate of the first cycle even with the same caloric intake! Then what’s even worse was the fat regain in the second cycle was THREE TIMES AS FAST!

Do not take dieting lightly. If you diet improperly you can really f*%k yourself up and it can take a long time to fix, and in extreme cases may not be completely fixable.

Last week @hollytbaxter was sure that she had stalled and wanted to drop calories. I took a look at the data and also couple that with the fact that she was on her menstrual cycle and urged her to hold off decreasing calories just like it says in my ebook ‘The Complete Contest Prep Guide’ (link in profile). The guide gives guidelines for when to make changes and when to hold steady. Based on these guidelines we held steady... much to the chagrin of Holly’s ‘prep brain.’ What happened this week? BOOM! 1.2kg of weight loss! Now imagine if we had unnecessarily decreased her calories when she was already feeling tired and lethargic.

Many people experience the laxative effect nearly instantly, therefore it is likely that some receptors exist in the gut that communicate with the brain and vice versa, possibly increasing GI motility and increasing urge to defecate.

Anything can happen when you are on the water. @hollytbaxter just decided to take the boat out and joyride up and down Clearwater beach for a few hours. I just took a couple of light spinning rods in case we ran into anything. Less than a mile up the beach we saw mackerel busting bait so we stopped ... Holly said she saw some “HUGE mother f***ing fish jump out of the water and I figured it was just a dolphin.

Ends up there were blacktip sharks mixed in with the mackerel and we had one slam our lure! He went on a blistering run and we fought him for about 25 minutes on 20 lb test! We ended up leadering him and then releasing him. We estimate he was around 5.5 feet and about 60-70 lbs. What a cool experience to hook a shark on a freaking artificial lure! I later hooked another one on a buck tail jig and he proceeded to leap out of the water, twist a 720 degree turn and break me off. I wish I would’ve gotten it on video. What an epic experience. We also saw dolphins and sea turtles. Not a bad day!

Epic deadlift session! Best I have felt since before i got injured. Post injury PR of 470 x 1 at RPE 6-7ish. Followed this up with 5 sets of doubles with 1 and 1/2 rep deadlifts (lift from floor, pause at knee, back to floor, then pull from floor to lockout and lower back down slowly = 1 rep ). Followed ... Epic deadlift session! Best I have felt since before i got injured. Post injury PR of 470 x 1 at RPE 6-7ish. Followed this up with 5 sets of doubles with 1 and 1/2 rep deadlifts (lift from floor, pause at knee, back to floor, then pull from floor to lockout and lower back down slowly = 1 rep 😳). Followed that up with 3 sets of 8 with 365 on Rack hip thrusts (I am the worlds worst hip thruster 😒).

I’m really happy with this but considering it’s still 250 lbs until we hit all time PR territory I am having cautious optimism. One day at a time. Brick by brick. Pound by pound. Rep by rep... I’m KHMEMMIN’!

I’ll continue to be loud, over the top, and audacious in pursuit of my goals. It’s how I am and it’s how I’m wired and I won’t apologize for it.

Really loving my new ‘Rebuild’ program from @thestrengthcave as I’m getting stronger pretty quickly and still feeling great. This was my third set of 8 on trap bar deadlifts at 365 lbs. not impressive weight at all but the goal is to focus on using my quads to move the weight and keep my back happy. ... This Rebuild program is great for anyone who wants to get stronger and build more muscle but may be limited on the volume they can use on the big three due to injury. Part of the reason we do diet breaks is to help maintain muscle mass, improve fat loss efficiency, and maintain metabolic rate during dieting. Now diet ‘break’ doesn’t mean you eat whatever you want, it just means you eat at maintenance. But you have to calculate it for your current actual maintenance... not ‘offseason’ or predicted maintenance since your BMR drops during contest prep. I hit 420 for a set of 2 followed by 255 on safety bar dead squats (set pin at parallel and add bands). I did 4 singles with that (2 shown) and those were brutal. . Today was fun as @hollytbaxter @mathasfitness ... 2nd week into my Rebuild Phase 1 from @thestrengthcave and this was the first day things felt heavy. This is a subject I covered in painstaking detail in my ebook (link in profile) and its actually GREAT news! It means that as long as you hit your calorie and PROTEIN targets (fiber is also very important but not assessed in many of these studies) you can do what your preference is for carbs and fats with your remaining calories! So knock back an apple or an avocado depending on your preference and chill the **** our about hormones. If they really made that big of a difference then we would see differences in fat loss when calories are equated. We don’t see that, thus they just don’t make a physiological difference compared to energy balance.

After this I did 3 sets of 2 with ... Have you ever dieted down only to regain all the weight you lost plus MORE and then find yourself having a hard time losing it? New research on adipose tissue adaptations to dieting are showing some really interesting results.
This is a figure from my book ‘The Complete Contest Prep Guide’ and is adapted from a study by MacLean examining post diet weight regain. Of particular importance is the immediate post diet period (days/weeks) transitioning into maintenance or surplus. It appears in this particular state, you are actually able to trigger adipocyte differentiation and produce NEW fat cells, making your fat regain potential even higher. Overfeeding in a normal state does not cause this but it appears that the post diet state is different for a few reasons:

Low leptin & insulin combined with decreased thyroid hormone, and drastically reduced fat oxidation rates create a milieu in which rapid influx of lipid across the adipocyte can trigger this differentiation of adipocytes and production of new fully formed fat cells. This is why an entire chapter of my book is spent on the diet AFTER the diet because you can really screw yourself up during the immediate post diet period.
I’ve done even more research into this aspect of dieting recently and have found some extremely interesting strategies that may help prevent this and limit overall fat regain (other than just not eating like an asshole). I will be organizing some of these and sharing them soon. In the meantime what I can tell you is 1) Do NOT binge eat post diet. Period. 2) Do not regain more than 30% of what you lost in the first week post diet 3) Do NOT use the first week post diet to take a week off from the gym. Continuing to train hard is one of the best things you can do to prevent triggering this undesirable outcome.
