Employees Can Now Use Facebook Effectively at Their Workplace

‘Facebook at Work’ is an initiative by Facebook which is meant for helping the working professionals to remain active in Facebook even during work. It has been officially launched now and is known by the name ‘Workplace’. Analysts predict that the owners of Facebook will not observe much monetary gains from this. The expected financial income by the end of the year 2017 amounts to just $36.7 billion. However, it has certain indirect benefits associated with it.

Even before the launch of ‘Workplace’, several organizations had been trying it out using the Beta mode. Lots of users from reputed organizations like the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Scandinavian Carrier Telenor have been happy to use it.

First of all, it helps the employees from the same company to communicate among themselves in an effective way. This makes the application at par with some others like Altassian, Jive, Yammer and Chatter. It is a well-known fact that a clear business communication is essential for the prosperity of a business. And business communication is made easy with the help of this initiative by Facebook.

Workplace can be accessed in two different ways- you can either login from own profile or can combine the two and shift from personal to professional mode whenever required.  The best thing is that the two profiles (personal and professional) are completely separated and you can be assured of the fact that the feeds from your personal life will not be visible in your professional corner. The reverse of this is also not likely to occur. This keeps your personal and professional lives separated and makes your Facebook experience better.

Workplace, however, is a bit expensive to be afforded by everyone. The first thousand Monthly Active Users are being charged at a rate of $3/month. The next 2000 will be charged at a rate of $2/month.

It is believed that Workplace still has a lot to be covered in order to be at par with its competitor. Its competitors (whose names have been mentioned earlier) allow a lot of plugins and other additional features. They are also integrated with different third-party applications.  It’s not that Workplace has not been integrated to third-party applications and is detached from plugins, but it still has a long way to go.

But how will Workplace benefit Facebook???

Researchers remark that it will lead to an increased usage of Facebook in the place where it is not normally used, that is, the workplace. And among these people who will use it in their workplace, there are many potential customers for the brands who advertise through fb. So, you can guess how this increased user base will help in expanding the business.

So this is all you needed to know about Workplace. To use Workplace, a company must be subscribed to it first. Individual users cannot use it unless the company is entitled to it.

Both Facebook and YouTube are leading social networking sites which help the users to experience entertainment in an enhanced form. They also keep the users informed about the latest news and technological developments in the world.

But there is one area where YouTube had been in the lead since beginning and that is the videos. Everyday a number of videos are uploaded on YouTube. Facebook, in comparison, has been the platform for posting a lesser number of videos, the ones that are uploaded an individual in order to share it with their friends and family.

Recently, Facebook has been trying to modify the different features related to video posts in order to emerge as a greater platform for video posting and expects the professional videographers to upload their content apart from the amateur ones. Here are the reasons that leads to an increased number of video posting on Facebook:

  • Controlling Features: Videos in Facebook can now be controlled at your will. One can post multiple videos and then decide on which of them they want to be activated and which others they want to be deactivated though all of them continue to exist there.   • More Capacity: Videos of larger size can now be uploaded at ease. The maximum permissible size for a video is 1.5GB now (which is almost equivalent to 45min). So, people can now share different items such as clipping from television programs, commercial ads and other such stuffs.
  • Privacy Settings: Previously there were only a few privacy options to choose from with respect to the viewing of the videos. While some were meant only for friends, some were for everyone. But now there is a host of new options to choose from. One can decide the target group for his videos depending on the location and also on the basis of their age or gender. This will prevent unwanted videos from appearing in the feeds of the users and also allow a user to stop his video from being viewed by unwanted people. Additionally, options of subtitles are also there which enables the users to share videos of a particular language with people who are not quite familiar with the same.
  • Easy Sharing: Earlier, only the videos on YouTube were sharable in the other social media platforms. A large number of users could share the videos in other websites with mere clicks of the mouse. Facebook has now incorporated this feature and the embed property associated with the videos are helping the users to share with their friends them easily.

There is another area on which Facebook can work in order to beat YouTube in the world of videos and that is taking a lesser part of revenue earned by posting ad videos. It is expected that Facebook would implement it and woo YouTube very soon!

Have the Facebook Algorithms Succeeded in Controlling Fake News

It has been observed through the months that ever since Facebook has made the human editors to resign, the social media site has been showered with fake posts. It had been accused of bias and has faced scrutiny in various occasions when these editors were present. But recently, there are fake news, old news, conspiracy theory and the similar stuffs flooding the site. It even had “Fakingnews” as the domain name itself.

It is a serious negativity on the part of Facebook since it is the site on which thousands of users depend for gathering information. There are many people who do not have the habit of going through newspapers daily but find interest in the Facebook stories. So, when a site like Facebook starts spreading fake news, it becomes a matter of great concern for millions of users all over the world.

In spite of putting in efforts to get rid of the fake news, Facebook has not yet succeeded in eliminating them out fully. They still continue to misguide people and defame Facebook. Experts are of the opinion that eliminating human editors was not at all a good idea and Facebook is compensating for the same.

Posts related to the conspiracy related to the latest election are also very common on Facebook nowadays. In order to get rid of these stuffs, Facebook arranged for some algorithms which would control the things being displayed on the site.

Intersect has even conducted a survey on the daily uploads on Facebook to find out the percentage of fake news in the site at present and has also maintained a record of the same. It has been found that the algorithm has not succeeded in its job. There have been instances of fake news even after using it. The following are the examples of the fake news which has kind of defamed Facebook after it withdrew its editors:

Fake News about Megan Kelly: On Sunday 28, August, there was a fake story about Megan Kelly being fired from the Fox News. This story became widespread on Facebook with an increase in the number of shares. Facebook later on apologised for the same. The story received 20,000 likes on the social networking site. It was finally removed from the Homepage on the 29th of August.

Fake Story about 9/11 Attacks: A story with respect to the 9/11 attacks was also highlighted which mentioned that these attacks were not an example of terrorist activity but controlled explosions that took place.  It was removed as soon as Facebook received alerts regarding it. However, by then, a large number of users had been misled by such wrong information. It had landed on the list of trending topics organically but was caught in the nuisance as a result of the hoax.

So, as you can clearly understand, in spite of using the algorithms, the fake news and stories are still trending on Facebook. Though the editors were initially removed from their posts to keep things unbiased, the latest scenario in absence of them is even worse!
