Linda Lopez (@linda__lopez) holds a unique view of objects and how to interact with them—in her own words: “I resist acknowledging that the objects inhabiting our lives are inanimate. By considering the objects’ needs, and denying our needs for those objects, they can expose a life and language of their own.” Lopez’s beliefs spring from her experiences growing up with a Vietnamese mother and Mexican father. English was spoken minimally in their household, and Lopez’s mother had a way of phrasing things that gave objects human characteristics.
.
Lopez refers to the “Laws of Contact”—a theory that every object a person encounters will forever change that person, which makes everyday objects immensely powerful in shaping human experience. Although clay is her primary material, the clay objects need other objects with which to relate: rugs create parameters of a space; gloves are ghosts floating between two worlds and embody the act of touching an object; and drawings serve as models for her sculptures, as well as diagrams to understand the nonsensical relationship she is proposing between the objects.
.
Lopez received an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2010 and a BFA in Ceramics from California State University, Chico in 2006. She has been an artist in residence at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia and the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana.
.
Linda Lopez, “Unknown Distance,” and “Start/Never-ending,” 2016. On view in "Melting Point: Movements in Contemporary Clay," until May 6.

In “Floor Kintsugi,” Stanton Hunter fills existing cracks in the landing between the second and third floor of the museum and the front sidewalk with clay material. This piece takes inspiration from the Japanese art of kintsugi, in which cracked ceramics are mended with powdered gold.

Emily Sudd’s (@ml8r) sculptures are an amalgamation of discarded ceramic objects and her own wheel-thrown vessels. After collecting and arranging fragments of various found ceramic items inside each half of her thrown form, Sudd subjects them to the same firing process in the kiln. In the firing, some objects retain their form, while others melt down into fluid clay and glaze.
.
The vessel serves as a womb that births something new from the destruction of found ceramics and then continues as a home and shelter for these discards. The melted remnants end up forming a record or fossil of these objects.
.
Sudd holds three degrees in Studio Art: an Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2014; an Master of Arts from California State University, Northridge in 2011; and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, San Diego in 2001.

Brian Benfer (@brianbenfer) uses clay to create site-specific installations, sculpture, and performative works. He is interested in the process of building ceramic forms, the act of kiln firing them, and the residue those actions leave behind. In the early 2000s, Benfer started making clay paintings and clay installations to communicate with his fellow graduate students and professors at Rutgers University that they held very narrow, antiquated views of ceramics. Benfer wanted to demonstrate clay as a material with great physical and conceptual capabilities. Branching into these new bodies of work also resolved his personal goal of enabling objects to successfully activate the overall space they inhabit.
.
Benfer loads wet clay onto a spinning potter’s wheel, which flings the material into his given environment. Benfer has a restrained, minimal approach to the creation of these works, letting the consistency of the clay and the height and speed of the wheel dictate the works’ outcome. The clay changes over time, contributing its own natural material evolution to the work.
.
Benfer received a MFA in Visual Arts from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2003 and completed a BA in Studio Art from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California in 2000. His work is part of numerous academic, museum, and private collections.
.
