As a young girl, I did not realize how hard and unfair life was for women in the very patriarchal society I grew up in, because I was lucky enough to be raised as a child and not as a daughter or as a girl by my parents. I despised Women’s Day because I used to consider that it was only another occasion for ignorant men to remind us how inferior they thought we were. Thanks to what I do, I realize that there is still so much to do until equal rights and freedom becomesa reality for all women. Today Women’s Day reminds me that I must remain vigilant to protect my and other women’s rights, and angry for all the women who struggle and suffer. In this picture taken during an assignment for Marie Stopes in #madagascar: A #portait of Clotile Hantamalala, 43 y.o. in her house in Antananarivo. She is still married but has not been supported by her husband for years. She a mother of 3 children aged 17, 15 and 9. She started to use contraception after giving birth to her first child, but had to commute for 2 hours to reach the closest health center where she could get affordable contraception, making it a challenge. As a consequence, she got pregnant two more times, was unable to keep a job, and struggled for years to make ends meet as a mother of 3. For five years, she has been able to access free contraception from the doctor of her neighborhood thanks to a voucher programme financed by Marie Stopes. But again, her reproductive rights are threatened today because the Trump Administration issued an order, the “Mexico City Policy”, which strips foreign nongovernmental organizations of all US health funding if they use funds from any source to offer information about abortions, provide abortions, or advocate liberalizing abortion laws. Although Marie Stopes does not provide abortion to Malagasy women, as it remain illegal in the country, the loss of USAID funding has forced Marie Stopes to shut down its voucher programme, which allowed low-income women like Clotilde to get contraceptives for free at private clinics and leaving them helpless. #womenshealth #womensrights #womensrightsarehumanrights #womensday #photojo

Alaba walks as if someone
Has pushed the back of her head hard.

They say when she passes by men,
She slaps her chalewote to her soles very loudly
Until the pitaa pitaa catches their ears
And they all, like wooden puppets,
Turn to watch her departing behind.

Now, Maame no longer sends Alaba on errands
Since she overhead the men describing
In graphic detail, whether the girl’s buttocks
Danced Kpanlogo or Adowa when she walks.? Tonight, she will sit Alaba down
And let her know her worth.

She must be married off to a rich suitor quickly
Before these useless fools who think they are men,
Start falling on her for free.
A girl with buttocks like hers must be worth, at least,
A dozen fat cows and an iPhone X.

A wedding, going back to work after my mat leave, quitting work to become a full-time mom and spend a beautiful summer with my boys, plus a memory to those exhausting 2 months where Idriss felt that a 4 am or 5 am wake-up time was normal... this is a great summary of 2017. I will make some predictions for 2018: there are going to be some Ottawa and France shots in there!
