This is something that my friend @themarthabeck had said to me, when I was suffering through a white hot rage at somebody. It doesn’t matter what the incident was, or who had brought on the anger. What matters is the understanding and wisdom about how to restore peace. Something I have learned in life is that people who have no boundaries are constantly furious. Furious, victimized, hurt, offended, and outraged. If you cannot figure out how to uphold the healthy, accurate, and appropriate distance between yourself and every person in your life (and it will be a different distance for every person in your life) then you will never know a moment of serenity. Not everybody gets to have full access to you. Trust and intimacy must be earned. (People will help you with this project by constantly showing you who they really are. Create your boundaries accordingly.) To do anything else is naive and immature. So: Who are you furious at today? Now look closely at your history with them. Find the moment when you allowed that person to come closer to you than they had earned the right to come. Now figure out how to reestablish (or establish for the first time) a wiser boundary. When they are held the correct distance from you, you will stop hating them. Until then, you are just using this person as a weapon to beat yourself up with. Put an end to it. Stand in your dignity and set your own terms. You can do this. Onward, LG

A few months ago, I witnessed a very touching conversation between my dad and a woman his age, who had been a hippie and anti-Vietnam protestor. The woman said to my father, “I was against the war, but I’m sorry that we didn’t respect your service and your sacrifice back then.” My father reached across the table, took this woman’s hand and said, “Thank you for saying that. But here’s the thing — your side was right. The protestors were correct. The Vietnam War was unjust and inhumane. I didn’t know it back then, but I know it now. You were right to protest. You were on the right side of history. Without your protests, the war would’ve gone on even longer.” The woman said, “But all the same — I thank you for your service.” And my father said, “And I thank you for your protest.” #america

The other day, I was inner-tubing down his (very cold) river, when I came around a bend and very nearly collided with him. This experience was equally alarming for both of us. For Leonard, it was alarming because he didn’t understand why this giant, saucer-shaped, flailing water beast was aiming straight for him. For me, it was alarming because mooses are dangerous and huge, and I didn’t want Leonard to kill me. I didn’t know how to slow the trajectory of my inevitable collision with this agitated specimen of charismatic megafauna, but then I realized that I was floating upon two feet of water...so I just stood up, and politely waited for Leonard to go about his business. I’m happy to report that both woman and moose are doing well, and have recovered from the shock of their near-collision. There is a life metaphor buried in this story somewhere, but I don’t know what it is. Anyhow: enjoy Leonard. He’s a good kid.

I witnessed some beautiful #bigmagic today at #bryantpark. My friend @green_silence is launching a brilliant new project called The Collective Museum. She calls it “a children’s museum for adults” — where people can come and play with the arts and sciences, in a hands-on way. Curious-minded and creative people (YOU!) will be able to come to the museum and explore their own inner muses by experimenting with 100 different disciplines (stained glass, perfume making, paper making, astronomy, etc.). The Collective Museum will open in TriBeCa next spring. In the build-up to the launch, of the museum, @green_silence has been offering New York City these gorgeous, free little pop-up events on every full moon and every new moon. Today, in celebration of the new moon, she filled the Bryant Park fountain with hundreds of messages in tiny glass bottles, which passers by were invited to take home. Each bottle says, “DO NOT OPEN UNTIL THE FULL MOON” and contains a magical activity to do on that day. You guys, you know I love shit like this! It was so sweet to see adults lined up at the fountain, waiting for their little message in a bottle — so excited to get a tiny little free gift, so thrilled to hold in their hands a mysterious message from a stranger. Here is what I believe: Everyone is primed for wonder. Everyone is thirsty for magic and mystery. Everyone is so ready to create, and to receive creation. I love it. Sweethearts, my friend @green_silence wants me to tell you this: If you DM her, she will send you a magical message-in-a-bottle of your very own. (Until supplies run out, or all float away!). And if you follow the hashtag #houseofthemuses you can see upcoming magical events. They will all be as special as this one. I love you and have a magical day!

I’ve spent the last few weeks out at the Fire Island Pines — one of Rayya’s favorite places in the world. My friends @gigimadl and @shawnfelker placed a memorial bench at the end of the pier, to honor Rayya, who loved to watch the sun go down over the bay. My best friend from childhood, Jennie (@willinknyc)) came to visit me at the beach, and last night we sat on Rayya’s bench to share some wine and to tell some favorite funny stories about the most epic and outrageous person we ever knew. It was beautiful. Jennie has been making me laugh since 1978, so she was the perfect person to go visit Rayya with. If you are grieving, Dear Ones, please don’t be afraid to revisit your favorite memories of the one you loved and lost. Sometimes we’re scared to remember the great happiness we once shared with someone, because we fear that it will hurt too much, and that the poignancy of those memories will make us weak. But this is not how it works. Being brave enough to remember ALL your joy and ALL your love makes you strong — so return to those great stories as often as you can. Suppressing it will break you. Let the joy flow. Let the stories run free. It’s yours to keep, after all. All the joy and love and wildness and passion that you ever shared with ANYONE you ever loved — it’s yours to keep, forever. I shared the best moments of my life with Rayya. I still do. I love you, Jennie. I love you, Rayya. I love you, everyone.

Grief is a full-body experience. This is what I’ve learned in the months since Rayya died: Grief is a living energy field that wants to move through you (the way storms move across the summer sky) and grief can’t move unless you allow it to. Otherwise it settles in your bones, and makes you sink in pain. You can help grief move through you with music and with dance — this is what my friends and I have learned. Those of us who loved Rayya will sometimes come together and dance out our pain, or sing out our pain...just to MOVE, so that our grief can move through us. This video was recorded on the day of Rayya’s funeral. The dancer is my beloved friend @gigimadl, who was Rayya’s ex-wife, and who was there at the end of Rayya’s life to help her transition, and also to help me. (The other round-the-clock caregiver at the end was Rayya’s ex-girlfriend @stay_see15. The love that Gigi and Stacey had for Rayya was bottomless. The loyalty of all these women to each other inspires me, and also saved me in my most difficult moments.) This video was filmed by my friend @marcjfrancis — a filmmaker who is currently working on a documentary about Rayya’s death. (This film was so important to Rayya, and she worked closely with Marc as she was dying, to make it happen. There was so much she wanted to teach people about how to embrace life while simultaneously leaving it.) Marc was there with us through it all — even this moment of raw loss and celebration. The writer Martin Prechtel says that all true grief has an element of rejoicing — but only if you are willing to allow ALL the love and ALL the pain to coexist. We dance because it hurts too much not to. We dance because we are so grateful to have known such deep, foundational love. We dance through our grief and WITH our grief, so that our grief will not sink us. We dance with God. We dance with Rayya. We dance with life and death. Thank you, Gigi. Thank you, Marc.

One of the toddlers who was separated from their parents by ICE has died.

And last week, the date passed by which this administration was court-ordered to reunite ALL these families with their children. Hundreds of families are still not reunited. Hundreds of children are still in detention centers.
And over 400 of these children have not been reunited with their parents because this administration has arbitrary named those children as “ineligible” for reunification.

Why are these children “ineligible” to ever see their parents again?

Because their parents are no longer in America.

Why are their parents no longer in America?

Because our government deported them — in many cases, after falsely telling these parents that their best chance to be reunited with their children would be to leave the country.

And then — when the courts tell our government that these children must be reunited with their parents — our government says, “Sorry — these families are ineligible for reunification because the parents aren’t here any more.” Specially, we are talking about 431 children who have now been deemed “ineligible” to ever see their families again, because our government deported their parents, after ripping their children out of their arms.

One of those children has already died.
We will not stop fighting this catastrophic human rights nightmare. We are investing the money we have already raised in financial support for family members, legal defense for the children and their families, trauma-counseling for the children, and fierce advocacy on behalf of these families — many of whom were pursuing LEGAL asylum claims when they were detained, separated from their children, and deported.

Please click the link in my bio to join us in funding this fight. We will not let this battle go. We will not accept this as “normal.” We will not forget these children.
And if you don’t already follow her, please start following @glennondoyle. She and her tireless team at @together.rising are staying right on top of this crisis. They know as much as anyone about what’s going on.

Onward,
LG

I have a friend who has worked for years as photographer for several major New York City newspapers. Long ago, he told me something horribly disturbing. He said that —when it comes to stories about murder —there is a clear racial hierarchy about which stories get put on the front page of the newspaper, and which stories don’t get told at all.  If a white child is murdered, that’s front page news.
If a black child is murdered, that’s not news — unless it’s a REALLY dramatic story. If a white man is murdered, that’s news. If a black man is murdered, that’s not news.
If a white woman is murdered — ABSOLUTELY, that is news.
But when a black woman is murdered? That is the lowest degree of importance, in terms of news. So many times over the years, my friend has taken photos at the murder scenes of black women, only to be EXPLICITY told by his editors: “This is not news. Nobody cares.” Long before there was a social movement called #BlackLivesMatter, my friend learned firsthand on the job that Black Lives Do NOT Matter. And that NO life matters less than the life of a black woman. Racism is so deeply embedded in our culture that we marinate in it at every level. This is why it is important right now that we say her name. This is Nia Wilson, who was brutally murdered on Sunday night in Oakland, California by a white man named John Lee Cowell.
Just be AWARE, as you watch the coverage of this murder of the way that racism shapes the story.  Be AWARE of the media using the words unhinged” and “mentally ill” to describe John Lee Cowell.  Be AWARE that white murderers always have the privilege of being labeled as “mentally ill” — whereas black and brown murderers are “terrorists”, or “gang-members”, or “thugs”, or “bloodthirsty”. And look for ways that people will try to undermine Nia Wilson’s character, because she was a black woman — so surely, she must have had it coming. Ponder how differently the story would be told, if an 18-year-old white girl had been murdered by a black man.And keep saying her name. Her name was Nia Wilson. She was innocently coming home from a party with her sisters. She had her neck slit. She was blameless. She MATTERS.

Today is my birthday and it’s been a sweet day....I spent it writing the last pages of the novel I’ve been working on all spring and summer.

I am grateful.
Grateful to be healthy, grateful to be able to create, grateful to have beautiful friends and family, grateful for the company of a little white French bulldog, grateful to have been born under the bright blue skies of summer, grateful that I am able to FEEL (whether it’s joy or sorrow)...just grateful to be alive.

And I am also grateful to all of you, for your giant hearts.

Today I want to say a special thank you.

Over the last month, thousands you have joined me and @glennondolyle and the good folks at @together.rising to raise millions of dollars to help reunite children and parents who have been separated from each other by the United States. Last weekend, we had a beautiful success story. DIRECTLY due to your donations, six-year-old Jelsin Padilla was reunited with his mother Yolany, after having been separated from her for two months.

It took money to make this happen — money to pay the lawyers who fought for this little child and his mother. That was the money we raised. You gave that money. You made this happen.

Not only that, you have provided bail bonds for EVERY SINGLE IMMIGRANT PARENT IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON whose children were taken at the border. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. You got every single one of them released from detention centers, so they will now have a much better chance of fighting to get their children back.
You’ve done more, too. You’ve paid for lawyers and advocates all over the country. You have shaken your congresspeople by the scruff of the neck and demanded action. You have refused to forget about these children.

There are thousands more of them, still in detention, and it’s a hard fight to get them back, but we are fighting for all of them. One at a time, we will insist on reunification. We can do this.

Please go to the link in my bio, to find out more about how you can help — either financially, or as a volunteer.
So much love to you all, and thank you for being lights in the world.
You fill me with hope.
Onward,
LG

In the last few weeks, so many of you have joined forces with @glennondoyle and @together.rising, to raise millions of dollars to help with the crisis of family separation. In the next few days we will give you a complete update detailing the distribution of your funds in round three of giving. But in the meanwhile, we want to give you an update on the crisis.Today we got the good news that a US District Court judge has ordered the American government to reunify all parents with the children from whom they were forcibly separated. Children under the age of five must be reunited with their parents within 14 days. Children ages five and older must be reunited with the parents within 30 days. Sounds good, right? The problem is, we don’t know whether the American government can comply with this ruling, even if they wanted to because, 1) they never created an effective method to keep track of the children, and 2) they have already deported many of the parents. Let me repeat that: They never created an effective method to keep track of the children. They don’t really know where the children are, and who those children belong to. This is truly a horror show —a nightmare combination of cruelty and ineptitude. Tomorrow, we will be publishing a resource with ways that everybody can keep helping — beyond just donating money. (Although your donations are essential, too, for the legal teams that need to go in there and fix this.) For now, please go to @glennondoyle’s page for a more complete update. She and her team have become experts on the situation. As much as anybody out there, they know what is going on in these detention centers. Keep following Glennon, keep following at @together.rising. Keep calling your Congresspeople to demand the deportations be suspended until all these families have been reunited. I would also encourage you to read the report that @elizabethwarrenma wrote about her recent visit to a detention center.
