Hundreds of brave women around the world are helping clear their countries of landmines. In areas hit by conflict all over the world, landmines are an ongoing threat. They still wreak havoc on populations that are trying to rebuild their lives and move towards peace. Deaths from landmines have, this year, reached the highest levels for a decade — and horrifyingly, half of those killed are children. Now, in areas where a large number of the male population have been killed, hundreds of women are joining together to clear their communities of the lurking danger of landmines. This week, the UK government pledged £46 million of overseas aid funding to help support the global effort against landmines. The money will be used to train all-female demining teams, working alongside local authorities, governments, and organizations such as the HALO Trust and Mines Advisory Group (MAG). The training empowers women through skills training in landmine clearance, vehicle mechanics, and paramedic first aid, with projects across Africa and Asia. Go to the link in bio to read more. Fire trucks pass the Delta Fire burning in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Calif., on Sept. 5, 2018. Parked trucks lined more than two miles of Interstate 5 as both directions remained closed to traffic. California has experienced a particularly punishing wildfire season this summer. Earlier this summer, the Mendocino Complex fire broke the record for California's largest wildfire ever, burning an area the size of Los Angeles. With the fire surpassing the previous record set in 2017, the trend in California and elsewhere is clear – climate change is making forest fires more intense and longer-lasting. Former President Barack Obama speaks at a memorial service for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, Sept. 1, 2018. In August, McCain died from brain cancer at age 81. Political leaders from both sides of the aisle came together this past weekend to remember Sen. McCain and his impact on the US. Obama, quoting Ernest Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls," McCain’s favorite book, said, "Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be. But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today." Obama continued, "What other way to honor John McCain’s life of service than to, as best we can, follow his example?" Even after his illness was diagnosed last July, Sen. McCain continued to uphold American values and speak out against injustice. See more from the week in pictures at the link in our bio. This week, 87 elephants were found slaughtered in Botswana in what may have been the single largest poaching incident in recent African history. The elephants had their heads smashed in and their tusks removed — obvious marks of poachers — and their corpses were partly covered in bushes as if to hide the crime. They were found near the Okavango Delta wildlife sanctuary, a famous tourist location deep in the country. The scene was especially harrowing because Botswana is recognized as one of the staunchest defenders of wildlife in Africa. The slaughter highlights the ongoing poaching crisis facing Africa. Each year, up to 35,000 elephants are poached and the continent’s elephant population declined by 30% between 2007 and 2014. Poaching has pushed big game animals to perilously low population levels over the past few decades and is part of a larger abuse of global ecosystems. Go to the link in bio to read more. Plastic junk filling the oceans, once vibrant forests reduced to flat lands, and a city on the brink of drying out — these are some of the narratives brought to life by the Union of Concerned Photographers in a collaborative project with WeTransfer. Five photographers with different passions and specialities were tasked with shedding light on various environmental problems. The question they were asked to answer was a daunting one: what does a world is in crisis actually look like? The world is currently in the sixth mass extinction event of all time and animals everywhere are facing unprecedented threats. Joel Redman showed how Cape Town, South Africa, has been gripped by a water emergency for the past several years. Earlier this year, the city imposed a daily limit of 50 liters of water per person per day and threatened to cut off household water lines. His photos show people lining up for water with big, plastic jugs, dessicated landscapes, and depleted reservoirs. Pictured here is an aerial image of Theewaterskloof Dam taken in March 2018 when the dam was at 10.6% of its capacity. Theewaterskloof is the largest dam in the Western Cape and one of the six main dams that supplies water to the city of Cape Town. But photographer Ami Vitale casts an optimistic light on this urgent problem. Vitale depicts some of the efforts being taken to protect different species and the simple beauty and tenderness of animals to show what would be lost in their absence. Pictured here is a photograph from Vitale's project on rescued elephants at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. At last, Malaysia has officially said goodbye to the tax on menstrual hygiene products! Despite being necessities, menstrual products were treated as luxury items in the country and fell in the “beauty and health products” category, so from 2015 until last month they were subject to a 6% goods and services tax. Malaysia recently changed its tax structure, moving to a sales and services tax, which sets taxes at 5-10% for sales of goods and 6% for services; however, the Customs Department site confirms tampons, sanitary pads, and panty liners are now exempt from taxes altogether. The more than 15 million women living in the country can now celebrate the lift! #girlsandwomen #waterandsanitation #wash #tampontax #malaysia

Firefighters monitor a backfire while battling the Ranch Fire, part of the Mendocino Complex Fire near Ladoga, Calif on Aug. 7, 2018. Years in which the most acres were burned by wildfires also have some of the hottest temperatures on record, an Associated Press analysis of fire and weather data found. As human-caused climate change has warmed the world over the past 35 years, the land consumed by flames has more than doubled. This year the Mendocino Complex fire broke the record for California's largest wildfire ever, burning an area the size of Los Angeles. With the fire surpassing a previous record set in 2017, the trend in California and elsewhere is clear: climate change is making forest fires more intense and longer-lasting. Education is a key to helping them to do this,” Angelina Jolie writes in an op-ed she penned for CNN after the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) published an alarming report stating that 4 million refugee children are out of school. Jolie isn’t convinced the international community is doing its best to end conflicts and maintain peace. She stresses the importance of giving refugees the tools they need. “If we help refugees get an education, they themselves will take on the harder task of rebuilding the countries whose future peace and security is so important to our own,” she writes. Addressing the outcome of mass population displacements is part of Jolie’s role as a UN special envoy. She’s made several trips to visit Syrian refugees in Iraq with UNHCR over the years. Pictured here, Jolie meets Falak, 8, during a visit to West Mosul, on June 16, 2018. A meteor streaks across the night sky above trees near Moscow, Idaho, during the Perseid Shower in the early hours of Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018. The Perseids appear every August, when Earth ventures through trails of debris left behind by an ancient comet. The annual event can produce dozens of meteors an hour, sending ribbons of light through the Northern Hemisphere. The scene is a good reminder of nature's beauty and what we stand to lose from climate change and environmental degradation.
