And I'm no hypocrite, I understand the culture, we're used to getting things quick nowadays, whatever you want, there's an app for it and a quick fix. .
And there are many versions of this sold by magazines, trainers and coaches and supplement companies.

How do i know? I bought.
.
My garage was full of empty containers of whey protein and magazines. .
I've been consuming the stuff since I was 16.
.
I made a little progress and thought I was the man, next thing I fell off/the "magic" stopped working and whatever progress I thought I'd made was lost.
.
That's as much a testament to hard work as it is to the fact that there is no place for ego in the gym. .
I only started making real progress when I
🔹started listening to guys that have done what I wanted to achieve (getting coached) and
🔹started being persistently patient, putting in good work everyday and not expecting it to happen overnight.

Embracing the IIFYM (if it fits your macros) lifestyle, where basically, you can eat or drink anything you want as long as it doesn't go over your protein, carb & fat requirements for the day.

I'm talking chicken licken hot wings with a bubblegum milkshake, thick base barbecue chicken and pineapple from Romans and my ultimate, rocomamas double rockstar with the large fries!
.
I could drop a tub of ice cream in 1 sitting and a double chocolate cake wouldn't last a week in my home. Heck choc chip cookies and gums galore were on the grocery list! 😱😱😱
.
Don't get me wrong, I looked like this...
.
But had
🔹all the gastric symptoms,
🔹man flu all the time,
🔹chronic asthma flare ups, 🔹poor sleep quality and
🔹mood, energy levels and cognitive ability were lacking.
.
Now, I barely get the flu, force myself to go to the Dr for an annual checkup and I love what I eat and how I feel.
.
The change:
1. Prioritising nutrient dense wholefoods (foods as they're found in nature, rice, sweet potato, veggies, fruits, animal proteins),
2. Eliminating processed foods (ie. fast foods, canned, the types that don't grow on trees, most supplements)
3. Adding healthy fats daily (avo, extra virgin olive oil, nuts & fatty fish)
.
Whilst a 6 pack is nice (yaa just nice), these are the priorities now:
🔶Health,
🔶 Enjoyment and sustainability and lastly
🔶 Body goals

I have nothing against ppl who choose to take steroids, it's their choice, I have a problem with it not being fully disclosed.

Ppl see this vision of muscularity or "fitness", mop up every word of advice which comes from the owner of that physique without that person fully disclosing how they got there.

Then they judge themselves and their progress not matching up to what they've been told because they weren't told about the synthetic substance bit.

I know because I've been there.

Looking up to bodybuilders, supplement company ambassadors and cover models, reading their workouts and nutrition habits and following to the T, only to make under whelming results.

Kills motivation, time and self esteem.

Don't get me wrong, it still takes a huge amount of hard work and discipline to achieve a remarkable physique even on steroids, but there's no denying the "boost"/upper hand/edge they give you.

But I don't use em. Never have, never will.

I don't come from particularly great genetics.

😂 I was the runt of the litter.
Smallest at birth of all my siblings.
Skinniest in all my classes growing up, worst at sports.
.
Most of what you see I've had to work for. Hard.

Trust me, I've made more mistakes in my training & nutrition and fallen off/been lazy more times than most.

I know the struggle.

Made this post on this day last year, a few days earlier I'd just found out about my dad's passing.

The pain, the shock, the regrets still continue, it doesn't get easier.

But the Lord strengthens you, if you so choose.

I've been asked where I get the faith or the belief and truth is the breaking down of my ego through pain and suffering brought me to my knees and humbled me.

In my darkest hour all I had was the light of salvation, Jesus and prayer.

I prayed and searched the bible for answers to my situations, skeptically at first, but he comforted me.

And not comfort in the form of ease, but comfort in the form of strength.

Since then, I put one prayer and one Bible study after the other and chose to hold on to that strength.

I simply wasn't willing to let it go.

I don't have all the answers, I'm not perfect and I don't have all the faith.

But I know who does and who is - God is!

Rest in peace daddy. We miss you.

Experts say if you don't use it, you'll lose it, so I'm keeping it moving, being smart about how though.

1. Warm up thoroughly,
2. lower weight and
3. lots of mobility work after.

Any tips on how to recover quicker, shoot.

I'm always open to running them past my chiropractor and physical therapist, who are experts but often, Instagram "knows better"

🔹Behind the neck press 4 X 12-20
🔹dumbell shoulder press 3x12-20 (Superset with)
🔹Dumbell side lateral 3 X 15-? (Til the arm falls off)
🔹Cable leaning side lateral 3x12-20 (Superset with) 🔹Bent over crucifix cross 3x12-20
🔹Barbell shrugs 3 X 12-20 🔹Seated calf raises 4 X 15-30 🚫 If you're in pain, you're probably doing something wrong and should consult a trusty trainer or chiropractor, which I do often. 🔵 DM me if you're having any issues, if I don't know how to help, chances are I can point you in the right direction.

The best resource I've found online for prehab, rehab and strengthening your weaknesses to avoid unnecessary surgery is @smashwerx.

Saying this silly thing, denying God's will in my life made me hide: I didn't go to certain places because of the "attention I was gonna get". As if it was THAT much.

Duuude, people see you on tv, of course they're gonna be excited and happy to see you in person.

It made me self important in my work; "I don't have to give it my all, look how much they're paying me". Ha.

These are all products of the sin I was living, the pride of life.

I have it on my heart to be a movie star, weird to say but that's the vehicle God's chosen to put me in.

Today I found a cool way to get a little battling rope workout at home.

We are made not just to move in the gym but to MOVE.

According to health and fitness expert Shawn Stevenson @shawnmodel, if you spend an hour in the gym, you're only about 4% more active than someone who doesn't workout.

Get moving folks and get healthy.

Probably should've worn a face mask since I just recovered from a sinus infection.

I do weird stuff before I lift ok I'm so weak tho. Hated last week's powerlifting result. I do a full powerlifting day each week to make sure my strength is progressing, thus increasing intensity, naturally produced testosterone and muscle development. On this day I also focus ... Hated last week's powerlifting result.

I do a full powerlifting day each week to make sure my strength is progressing, thus increasing intensity, naturally produced testosterone and muscle development.

On this day I also focus on form, hence the crazy silly moves before i lift.

Sumo deadlift (max: 120kg) and bench (max: 80kg) suffered the most.

Squat (max: 100kg) was meh.

Overhead Press (max: 60kg) & DB bench (max: 100kg, not filmed) were sooooo fun.

Week before this, I took 1 full week off to recover from a shoulder injury (as if that was enough time 😂) and this was my first powerlifting session since.

If you're struggling with your strength, I'd suggest adding these primary compound lifts to your gym routine and focus on good form whilst progressing in weight every week.

Remember: that which you do not hate you will eventually tolerate.

I'm the obsessed type, the all or nothing type, the down a bottle of vodka dashed with cider drink all night and start again in the morning type.

If you ever hear ppl call me Cage (aka Nicolas Cage from Leaving Las Vegas), that's why.

I progressed to a full time smoker, part time drug addict and a keep alcohol on me at all times drinker.

Battling depression, suicidal thoughts, ill health, court battles.

It took my pastor calling me to order saying "you're out of control", for me to wake up.

Enough.

Jesus and gym straight up saved my life.

I've been told I'm addicted to gym... duh, I'm in there 6 days a week hence the hashtag #exerciseEveryday - but I'm clean yo - rather that.

Yea I fell off, a bunch of times, picked myself up.

Got back on, had mediocre results due to poor form, poor exercise programming or poor diet, got depressed, fell off again.

No greatness here, if anything my path has just brought me to my knees sooner than most, later than some.

I'm not proud of all this, but I'm a slave to shame and sin no more.

The Lord is the only reason I'm standing, walking everyday.

I don't have it all on lockdown but I have the tools to make sure I'm a better and better man, husband and father everyday.

I thank God for the privilege to wage the war on darkness in prayer and in the gym.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

When you see someone trying, struggling, dying to be better do better everyday, don't laugh, don't knock em. Your encouragement could be the difference between a hard L or a much needed W.

People underestimate what they can achieve in 5 years and over estimate what they can achieve in 6 months.

Sure I had the sniffles thanks to JHB turning into a freezer, but excuses are for #2, nobody even knows that ... Fell off! Man have I been slacking!

This is the part where you roll your eyes on some: ugh, is he gloating or being falsely modest or all this talk of training and nutrition is boring, when's lunch?

Truth be told its reasonable for me to look at my performance last week as acceptable, reasonable for me to be so busy making ends meet that I neglect my clients (fellas and ladies your Free training and nutrition plans are on the way, promise), it's reasonable for me to "seek balance" and take time off. That's what they say right?

Nobody ever achieved anything being reasonable.

When ntate Motsepe aimed to make the best soccer team africa has ever seen out of a club from Mamelodi, when our forefathers fought hopelessly against oppression, when Paul defended himself against the Jews who sought to kill him, an outsider would've said it would be reasonable for them to quit or at least lower their standard. Thank goodness they didn't.

I'm going for unreasonable rather, I'm going for obsessed, relentless, unwavering.

Starve the doubt, be unreasonable.

Only you and those who've reached the goals you aim for know how much it takes to get there.

I've been in the gym since 2002, which is very disappointing if you do the maths.

21 year olds who have been in the gym for two years have better bodies than I do 16 years in!

Why?

I worked out whenever I wanted/felt like it, however I wanted, ate whatever and however, drank, smoked, barely read a book or asked around. Only ppl I took advice from were ppl I knew, ppl who just didn't have the bodies or work ethic I wanted. Ppl who spent more time in a bar than under one!

I was making no progress which killed my motivation, an endless cycle that resulted in unhappiness.

Then things changed.

I've made more progress in the last 2 years, heck last 6 months than I have in 16 years of gym.

Why?

Cos i dropped my pride, left my ego at the door and started from the bottom (excuse the pun). If you need advice, holla. Cos we're in this TOGETHER!

DEMOTIVATED ---> holla.
Not sure if you have the 'right' diet or supplements ---> holla.
Wanna take things up a level ---> holla!

I may be 2 steps ahead of whomever but I'm not even nearly where I wanna be.

But I promise you this, I'll be getting better every day, week, year!

Mid way into a 6 month bulk, putting on a bit more fat than I'd like, not hitting all the PRs I'd like on my top sets, having to have one too many midnight meals to hit my macros and barely getting enough sleep in between late night netflix-ing with the wife @cleomoloi and 2am bathroom breaks with my son (teaching 🙌😂😂😐😴), motivation can kinda take a walk, if you know what I mean.

But with a nod from the mag that started it all for me fitness-wise, a sudden boost in my motivation! Much appreciated @menshealthza! Back in high school, I think I was about 16 / 17, @maxmmethi had just won the cover model competition and BAM! I was hooked! It's an honour and a privilege to be able to give some of that motivation back to the ppl!

Americans have been said to be arrogant as a nation, at times ignorant even. Maybe, but one thing I can attest to is that they're the best at a lot of things. Why? Because they believe they're the best and they manifest that belief through action, it's the American dream! What's my point? Unity in SA could be the South African dream, the dream that breaks poverty, inequality and maybe even crime. I dunno. It's a new dawn in SA and I feel hopeful that a better day is coming.
