What you can’t see, but maybe you can feel: a wonderful midwife (@heybales) holding space; an exhausted, dotting partner, gently fanning his wife in between surges; the long, winding path this mother traveled to bring her baby safely in her arms. Moments like this may not seem like anything but a blip in your Instagram feed. There is nothing riveting about the image. But I can feel the love in this image. The space that was held. And the longing in a mother’s heart as she worked to bring her baby earthside. #birthofamama #birthwithoutfear #birthphotographer #losangelesbirthphotographer #doulalife #birthcenterbirth

The truth is birth is a transition and pieces of you are dying so that you can become a mother. While laboring my doula reminded me of this and helped me to recognize that it’s part of the process and that it’s not only essential but its beautiful.” By Monica @momoross

(Also, strongly resembles a placenta) 🔻
Pam says, “This painting was inspired by a story my friend Alberto told me. Two of his tias (aunties) are parteras (midwives) in Oaxaca, Mexico. There, women who give birth are called warriors. 'The midwives tell a pregnant woman that when she is in labor she will have to go to the underworld where spirits hold all the unborn babies … She will have to find her baby, do battle in labor with the spirit to free her baby and bring him or her home—bring her baby back and into to the world, to the family who is waiting. Only she can do this.'

Beautiful insight by the magical @katydiddidit “Post baby, I’ve actually had to mourn the end of my pregnant body. I realized that I had extended a lot of generosity and kindness to my pregnant body because of the baby, but I hadn’t been as kind and loving to my own body before. And that realization made me sad because I have an amazing body that has carried me through this life – the hard times and good times –  and it deserves nothing but love.” Read more about Kate’s experience giving birth and the wisdom gleaned on the blog — link in profile.

Chinnamasta is a Hindu tantric goddess who is without a head and in this tradition, a symbol of mother: both life giver and taker. She helps transcend the mind and all of its ideas and attachments into the Pure Divine Consciousness.

If a laboring woman can find the tools to ‘sever her head’, so to speak, it will allow her to be an open vessel through which new life comes through her rather than her mind closing up the space around her body and baby.

This ‘severing of the head’ is the first sacrifice upon entering motherhood (besides the physical changes of pregnancy). When a woman who will soon be a mother fights this process, she may be prolonging the labor process, making the pain more intense and scary.

Try hypnosis, massage, visualization, affirmations, etc. to help relax the mind and give it something else to focus on. This allows your body to do the work it inherently knows how to do.

Love these #wisewords from one mama to the expectant one: “You might poop.

Get over it.

You may also vomit.

Or pee on your midwife.
Or suddenly find that you are fluent in a hybrid language of angus cow and blue whale, as you stumble into a dresser wearing nothing but an adult diaper and a tens unit, leaking from your eyes to your unmentionables and trying desperately to remember the English word for “no-pain-stop-now-drug.” You are allowed to do all these things and more because you are giving someone the incredible gift of life. No one will think less of you and none of it will matter once that little person is placed in your arms. I promise. It’s one of the few times in life you will get a free pass to be the hottest mess you’ve ever been. Enjoy it like the rock star-life-giving-goddess that you are.” 📸 @littleplumphoto

I want to hear your story! I have a blog — Milk Trails — dedicated to the out-of-hospital birth experience. Sharing positive stories can help reduce fear and misunderstanding around childbirth. ⚫️ Exploring birth in settings that allow women to feel safe and that support the natural birth process can help illustrate the scope of what “normal” birth (normal being quite a broad term here) can look like. This is so the experience and process can be better understood and trusted no matter what setting a mother chooses - hospital or out-of-hospital. ⚫️ We also discuss the choices made by mothers in planning out-of-hospital births. This can help better inform about the option of birthing at home or in a birth center while dispelling a few myths. 🔮 DM me if you’re interested in sharing your story and either way check out the blog.
