These people went to Disneyland... where I was far too overwhelmed with 2 kids, 2 grandparents, a fiancé on his first trip, 90 degree heat + realizing 2/3 of the way through I was getting sick, to take the required adorable mouse ears Instagram worthy photo.

So I stole one from Easter that’s cuter.

And decided to be more present.

Just enjoying leaning back against Beau, watching my niece lose her ever loving mind with each new character that would round the corner at the parade (swipe right). Aka basically me at the Taylor Swift concert.

Amateur group selfies on rides that are getting framed (my dad 😂). And that final “We’ve been here for 12 hours should we get one group shot?” clutch moment.

Today’s reminder that sometimes your favorite photos aren’t the best photos, despite what Instagram-colored-glasses make us think. (wink) #UncleBeausFirstDisneyland

But also babe I promise to get a photo of us in ears in front of the castle next time! (Cue him fake smiling because he couldn’t care less about said photo but can tell this is important to me so he should pretend it is to him too.)

PS I remember 3-4 years ago working with my business coach on the goal that I could go to Disneyland for a day with my niece and not feel guilty for taking a day off of work. I didn’t feel guilty once. Bonus reminder that what you’re struggling with now can be healed and a thing of the past. (I talk a LOT about this, mental peace in business, in the video linked in my bio right now!)

PPS Favorite ride at Disneyland? 🎠 Peter Pan is a nostalgic fav, Indian Jones is the most fun + I love Haunted Mansion! No roller coasters for Aunt Hil…

If you’re an entrepreneur who has ever cried, had a panic attack, lost your temper, had someone quit, felt like a failure, felt ashamed or wanted desperately to quit yourself — this is for you.

For the first time I’m sharing a 90 minute keynote I spent 2 months creating. #LinkInBio It’s the first + biggest gift of celebrating my 7 year business anniversary this month.

Of course as a former actor I’m going to work singing, dancing, British + Southern accents, tae-bo and laying on the ground with my tush in the air into a talk on being a badass in business. •
Don’t let the fun fool you: This talk is packed with shocking stats that prove what I’m teaching, what revolutionized my business in 6 months, can do the same for you.

The email campaign that doubled our sales.

The split test that showed working more wasn’t making me more money.

Why my team has never been happier.

How I have more work/life balance than ever before.

The one thing I attribute my radical business shift to.

This audience... was not my people. Lots of middle aged tech dudes. And yet. They lined up afterward to tell me how powerful the talk was. Which I share because I know how many demands you have on your time! And I want you to know your education as a leader, this talk, is worth your time.

QUESTION: Can you relate to that first sentence? Could you relate when you watched the video?

PS What’s your favorite power ballad to get you revved up + feeling like a rockstar? 💃🏻

For years I worked the US Open, 16 hour days, 14 days straight, on my feet, sitting on stairs next to trash cans to eat meals, carrying food into sweaty slippery smelly industrial kitchens. •
I hated the job so much my stomach would be in knots for months before. But I made $2,000 in 2 weeks + combined with unemployment that was enough for 4 months.

Tennis makes me feel all the feels. I watched from center court in a box suite + fell in love with the game. But every year when the tournament returns I’m transported back to a time when I felt so small, ashamed, trapped, poor.

I had to wear an XL polyester polo shirt, cheap black slacks, orthopedic shoes. I felt unattractive, lower class, like someone uneducated + less worthy of respect. And that’s how many guests treated me.

This month for my 7 year biz anniversary I’m sharing incredible NEW FREE VIDEOS with our email list (email us if you’re not on it) — to educate, empathize + empower.

For today: If you’re working a job you loathe, I’ve been there; don’t think the world sees your potential, I get it; see fancy people on IG + feel so very far from that financially, I know how you feel.

But do NOT doubt the person you are becoming. The girl in this photo, who popped over to London to see girlfriends amidst a month in Europe with her fiancé, wearing vintage slacks found in Paris, CEO of a team of 12 who do work with a purpose — she was in there 7 years ago.

DVF said “I became the woman I always wanted to be”. I knew I was worthy of sitting in the fancy box, not serving drinks in it (nothing wrong with that, just for me it made me feel small). And I believed it enough to do something: hit publish on a personal styling website.

7 years later going back with Beau (swipe for hilarious photo attempts) wearing heels + a cute dress is always symbolic for me. You can make it happen, m’dear. •
Not because of trips to London or fancy things that don’t matter, but because you look at a photo of yourself one day + say “That woman is living up to her worth; she’s meant to shine + she’s shining”.

How do you know if the clothes you buy will bring you joy for awhile or you’ll be over them quickly?

On my last photo of this red dress I shared about not shopping for 5 months, then buying some new pieces while traveling (like this number).

Since being home I’ve realized that not all the items have brought me the same amount of joy, gotten the same amount of wear. So I’ve broken down five things that could help you shop smarter and spend more wisely.

Click the link in bio for some practical tips from a stylist! (Who still doesn’t knock it out of the park every time.)

Example that just came to mind: I bought a swimsuit trying to be strategic about tan lines for one of my wedding event dresses (read: plunging neckline). Wore it to the beach with THANK GOD only Beau and my boobs pop out the. entire. time. Newest style lesson learned: Do the entire hokey pokey in a swimsuit before you leave the house to make sure you know what it’s all about.

Also I wish someone had been filming because I walked out of the ocean, hair slicked back, sexy new white suit, trying not to let a nipple pop out so I’ve got like arched back, shoulders, booty out bikini model posture when Beau says “Babe you look like a James Bond girl!” And then a MASSIVE wave knocks me over and I somersault underwater and plop on the sand on all fours with my hair over my face in front of a bunch of kids.

This blog post is not as funny as that. But it’s more helpful.

QUESTION: What’s been the best purchase you’ve made lately? Gets a ton of wear, or compliments, makes you feel awesome or was a great deal?

September marks my 7th anniversary of launching Dean Street Society, my styling business (hitting publish while working my last miserable cocktail waitressing job). More to come on that this month, but in short: I never dreamt it would be so hard, nor so good.

It’s like dancing (my last career): It takes years of sweat to make it look easy, but when it’s your passion you can’t imagine doing anything else. And making it look easy, doesn’t mean it is (hello ice baths while doing Rockettes). It’s hard work, but so worth it for the joy. Blisters and beauty. (wink)

QUESTION: If you’re an entrepreneur, how long have you been in business for? 💋

“I know you’re miserable, but if that same situation hadn’t happened to me years ago I never would’ve met my husband,” I told her. • “And not just him. “And not just him. Everything in my life got better — friends, faith, home, business, mental health, inner peace.

Which, I won’t say this is happening so you’ll meet your husband. When I wasn’t cast with Rockettes a 5th season everyone said “There’s a reason, like now you won’t be in rehearsals + be at the audition that’s your Broadway debut!”

That didn’t happen. My performing career didn’t get better. Nothing magical happened that season because I was unemployed.

But a few years later? Things were way better. I had this whole career of entrepreneurship that’s blessed + changed my life. And it honestly means zero that I did or didn’t do one more year of that show.

When things fell apart at my old church? It was a solid 2+ years of being in the wilderness alone. What happened made no sense.

But finding a new church is where I met my husband. I’d go through 2 miserable years all over again for the 50 of happiness I’ll have with him.

So in the micro, honestly, I don’t believe it always gets better. The next guy may not be the one, getting fired doesn’t mean you’re about to get your dream job, roommate bailing on you may means months of miserable sublets, surgery + rehab nothing more than something you grit your teeth + get thru.

But in the macro I believe it always gets better. That God’s plans really are better than what we could beg + plead for right now. Look beyond the next 3 months + believe in where you’ll be in 3 years.”

Conversation with one of my besties this week. 💋 Because good friends + wine, for cheers-ing or laugh crying into, helps.

Meanwhile today’s agenda:

Staying in this bed awhile longer (POURING rain here in Brooklyn) to read over breakfast

Wedding band shopping #6MonthCountdown

Dinner with couple who’s in our wedding + we’re in theirs 5 months apart

In other words, happy stories do happen. They just take some patience. 💋 Envision where you’ll be 3 years from now...

What are you up to today? 💋 Grateful for or dreaming will be? #SaturdayMorningMusings #ItGetsBetter

Starting this week with gratitude 💋 After a rough spell of family health things, friend’s heartbreak things + to-do-list-too-long things, I’m choosing to start this week (just this week, small goals) with more intentional mornings.

Time to read/journal before work, prayer, gratitude. 3 things I’m grateful for:

A book called “How to be married” by @jopiazzaauthor that is so freakin delightful it’s making it easy to read before work.

My wise girlfriends who have such depth + gumption they make me want to be better at living with intention such as mornings with more prayer.

Eating cleaner the last 10 months, even though that meant I felt ill after eating crappy snacks all through the (amazing) roller coaster that was Mission Impossible this weekend. (Though I still have allergies (read: as I type, itchy mouth, sneezing for hours) that have to be food but I can’t narrow. Anyone else had this?)

You?

Gratitude?

Mornings?

A small goal this week?

Believing this week can be one with more joy. We’ve got this. 💋 #ElegantExcellence #LittleJoys #AnAlluringLife

Anyone else buy far too many dresses with the story you could “wear it to a wedding” then by the time you’re invited to a wedding your first thought is “oh I should go buy something”?!

Honestly, this wasn’t the perfect dress. A little warm for the climate, not the most danceable skirt, didn’t look good with the shoes I packed bc I got lazy and didn’t try them on together.

But I could have made all those same mistakes with a new dress. And while I won’t remember pulling up the sliding slip strap all night a year from now, I will have this — my favorite picture of us to date — where the dress is perfection against that magical Spanish sunset.

New isn’t always better. Beautiful isn’t always perfect. 💋 Guests who bring nice cameras to weddings are a gift to the world (thank you @simonasher)!

Meanwhile we are inching closer to just six months till our wedding!!! 👰🏻 (New “Wedd Pt 2” pinned IG Stories!)

QUESTION: I’d love to hear your thoughts on CHANGING YOUR NAME?

I don’t want to lose my maiden name. Do want to incorporate his to feel like a team on flight reservations, credit cards. I’ve been warned that hyphenating makes life complicated? (That computer systems don’t register it?) So I’m leaning towards two legal last names, for which you have to petition a judge in NY state but it’s been done.

What did you (or your sister, bestie) do? Any pros/cons? #AnEducatedStyle #DressJoyfully #TheDelanceysWed

It’s bc I don’t buy clothes very often. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (Aka I don’t have the link for you to go by that thing bc it’s not brand new.) Mostly just bc I’m busy. And when I have downtime, shopping makes me feel tired more often than excited. And yes, I’m a professional style expert who believes in the incomparable power of what we wear!

In Jan I decided not to shop for 3 months + it became 5. To save money, pause mindlessly online shop when bored.

And also bc I know the diminishing return of new clothing. Get really excited when buy it. Wear the heck out of it. Becomes ordinary. Want to buy more. We all do this. With people we date, redecorating our home. It’s a maturity muscle to be grateful for + satisfied with what we have in an always new, always more, consumer culture.

So I gave myself a season without that dopamine hit. I had all the sweaters, pants + boots needed to get me thru winter w/o feeling annoyed at the no-shopping. I didn’t have any gaps in my wardrobe (bc I know how to find + fill those as I teach my students).

Then I got engaged, started planning a wedding, months flew by. In June I headed to Europe for a month + only shopped a few days while traveling, but the new clothes are bringing me joy! I was feeling very bored in my summer wardrobe.

QUESTION: Does one choice feel better for you?

STOP: Perhaps Aug 1 - Oct 1 you don’t shop, have all you need for warm weather, + a break helps quiet the voice thinking about what else you wish you had?

SEEK: Or perhaps you’re feeling bored, not beautiful when you look in your closet, + need to ask your husband to watch the kids so you can go reconnect with the feminine side that makes you feel amazing?

Even a stylist has a time to stop shopping, + a time when she needs a few new dresses to make her feel beautiful. 💋 Both matter. Choose with intention.

PS Speaking of beautiful, wedding dress shopping on IG Stories! Took a break from sharing while in the hunt, but now that I found her (well, them!) I’ve got hilarious + swoon-worthy adventures to share there in the coming weeks… 👰🏻

I traveled to magical places, saw friends, drank copious gin and tonics staring at the sea. It was beautiful.

And travel gives space for deep thinking, exploring to the bottom of a thought yet that doesn’t mean you can solve the internal challenges you uncover. It was hard.

(But you can’t say that or you sound ungrateful.)

We’re wedding planning, this special one-time team project, most lavish thing I’ll ever get to creatively direct, curating a luxe adventure for our family and friends. It’s beautiful.

And wedding planning software is woefully incompetent, despite two planners I’m still project manager/creative director/talent/client, and with the nature of my business there’s legal docs, media kits, the parts of business that drain me. It’s hard.

(But you can’t say that or you sound ungrateful.)

This is the easiest my business has ever been, since bringing on business partners 16 months ago, my team is so healthy, we’re helping more students than ever. It’s so beautiful.

And despite a team of 10 full-time who are killing it at marketing, operations and customer service, I am the one and only person on the creative team, meaning posting on IG feels like a luxury while I micro-manage graphic designers. It’s so hard.

(But you can’t say that or you sound ungrateful.)

Abundant beauty, for which we are grateful, doesn’t mean the absence of any hardness, about which we can be honest.

The goal isn’t pure goodness, but being at peace with “and” while ever seeking to make the hard easier for ourselves and one another. 💋 At least that’s what I’ve been in dialogue with myself about. (Insert figuring-it-out shrug.)

You? How’s your summer, friend?

PS There’s a new blog post breaking down the five things that make this affordable outfit look more chic than cheap. It’s a beautifully practical teaching, that for some reason felt hard to write an IG caption for. Micro example of the above in action. Link in bio. #ElegantExcellence #AnEducatedStyle

I’m free to work for myself, from anywhere in the world, to love who I want, run a company as a woman, express my faith, vote for leaders + laws I believe in, do work that matters, get paid to be creative + wear what makes me feel beautiful.

What’s one freedom you’re grateful for? 💋 Also guys, off-the-shoulder for summer. Get into it. And red. She’ll just always look good on you.

I used to think if I’d lost my patience with the kids by lunch “The day is ruined” but then I realized “No you still have half a day! Play whatever game they want + come bedtime they won’t remember you were a grump of a mom the first half.”

This wise advice from my friend Jess a month ago has helped me so much.

Recently I walked 40 minutes to a park to have a croissant + cappucino while working, then go shopping for a photo shoot. The cafe didn’t have croissants, so I wandered more to find a boulangerie, ordered (by now it’s been an hour)... + didn’t have my wallet.

Honestly I cried tears of frustration as I called an Uber, decided I’d get food + just go home + watch some TV while I ate, shake it off + go back out. I went to two places to find what I wanted to eat, order (another hour by now)... + remembered I still didn’t have my wallet.

So I went home. Up 4 flights. Down for food. Back up 4 flights. And by 1pm (had also gotten a late start over an issue with our AirBnB which I was frustrated about) was on the couch having literally accomplished nothing but failure + frustration.

But Jess’ words encouraged me. The day wasn’t ruined. There was still a second half to go. So I let myself chill, then regrouped, went out + had an awesome afternoon + rest of the day! One of my favorite afternoons in Paris.

NOTE TO SELF: No matter what you want to get done this morning for work (anyone else working on the 4th? we’re wedding planning), the kind of mom you want to show up as, how clean you want to eat, remember come 1pm or whenever, you can shake off whatever didn’t happen + reclaim the afternoon a fresh.

Finding that little sentences + shifts making a big difference in my ability to choose joy + choose more self-compassion. 💕 #ElegantExcellence

There 3 ways to travel: have, do or be. ✈️ Which are you? (PS My guide to Paris is live on the blog!)

Each style is wonderful in it’s own way, yet with a different perspective on exploring a new city.

HAVE: Your greatest joy comes from having a magnificent meal, top cocktails in town, going shopping for some unique memorable pieces. You want recommendations from trusted friends before you land.

DO: You’re most lit up when you can check off visits to museums, historical sites, complete a hiking trail, or go zip lining. Googling “must see” or “best things to do” prior to departing is key.

BE: You’re happiest simply soaking up the energy + inspiration of a place whether sitting in a sidewalk cafe, lying on the beach, or walking and wandering for hours. You’ll often figure it out once you arrive.

Personally I’m not much of a Have person. We’re not particularly foodies. I do enjoy shopping when I travel, simply because I don’t have time at home but it’s not my top priority most days.

For certain cities we are more Do people. In Brazil we wanted to hike, South of France paddle board. I’ve seen far more shows on London’s West End on Broadway.

Yet my primary mode of travel is to Be. This is especially applicable in Paris. The way I explore the city is to pick one destination a day, walk in that direction, + see what else you find on the way there or back. Thus a few of my favorite strolling day itineraries are #LinkedInProfile!

We have a new website! 🍾 I first asked my team to start working on this 2 years ago with the idea it would take 2 months.

Yet life takes longer than we want it to. In conversations with my friends lately whether it’s walking thru grief, waiting to meet your husband, losing weight, a creative or business dream come to life... we want things in 3 months we can’t bear to know will take 3 years.

Back in NY recently Beau + I walked past “the place where dreams go to die” (aka the miserable office job I had when I started Dean St). He said, “If you then could see you now!” And he’s right. I never dreamed or desired things as wonderful as my life is right now.

Yet I replied, “If you’d told her how long it would take she would have said she’d die!” And I’m right. If I knew how much longer it would be before my business was sustainable + a myriad of other things, I would have felt devastated not believing I could survive for so long.

And yet we do. We think 3 years is an eternity, until we look back + see the way it all unfolded in the right timing. •
So if you see someone else having what seems like fast progress in their life, remember it may have taken a lot longer behind the scenes than what you see.

So if you’re feeling impatient, discouraged, defeated, stuck, take heart that everyone has this experience + it’s no marker of whether it will happen, or of your ability/worth to make it happen.

Oh + the website is at like, 80%? (For anyone behind me in the journey, almost 8 years in business + still don’t have the perfect website.) We’ll keep tweaking it, but the world doesn’t need your vision to be perfect to start enjoying it.

Now pop over to our new site (link in bio) + explore all the loveliness we’ve created for you! 🍾 #WeEncourageBeauty

PS Any entrepreneurs who can relate or are encouraged by this reality of timelines??

3 years ago we hired a publicist as after 4 years of waiting in business I felt like it was finally the time to do television. We fired him 2 weeks later realizing he wanted me on planes to do morning TV + I needed to be in NY running my team + teaching webinars to keep my business running.

2 years ago I started writing my style book. One night in Croatia I couldn’t sleep because the words just started coming. I didn’t want to wake Beau so I sat on the toilet lid in the bathroom, dripping with sweat sans fan, typing before the words disappeared. But when I came home my business wasn’t in a place where I could take off to write. I needed more help. We weren’t “there” yet.

1 year ago I was confident it was finally time. I’d hired business partners, they were on board that this book is the most important thing we can create to help the most women. But then X,Y,Z happened + it got delayed until after this, that + another thing.

It’s taken me 7.5 years to build the business that will give me the freedom + support to start creating something I’m called to.

It took lots of mentors, failures, patience, mess, mistakes, tears, wisdom, determination + help.

It will take another year to finish the book, have it be published + finally re-hire that publicist.

This could be discouraging. We’re so impatient. Waiting a decade for our dream feels like we will literally die. The business, book, husband, fillintheblank. But I’ve found it’s worth the wait.

And my life attests that God (the universe, insert your beliefs) unfolds it at the right time. That the business, book, marriage, fillintheblank will be better than it would have been if you had gotten it when your impatient heart wanted it.

That He is working on it right now. You just might have to wait a year (or 2 or 3 or 5...) to look back + see what’s happening today... 💋 #LoveNotesFromParis #PatienceMyHeart #KeepDreaming #DeanStStyleBook

I am stunned at the news of Kate Spade taking her own life. You think that if you build your dream business, with your husband, it’s a smashing creative success, adored by all, you sell it for billions while raising your child in glamorous New York City... the textbook “everything”... that you will be happy.

At least I think that. I’m happy now, but won’t I be even happier with more growth, notoriety, impact, wealth, freedom? It’s right around the corner with just a little more X?

When I can just get all the big wedding planning done. When we have filled our job openings to have more help. When I get the first draft of the book done. When the publishing contract is signed. I’m about to be happier, right?

What I’m convicted of today is you will be as happy as you are in your present position. More doesn’t guarantee happiness. So we should all pursue our mental health, emotional wellbeing, physical balance as our prime aim today.

Not when we have more time because we got through one more launch, season, a little more money, help, followers. Because more doesn’t mean easier. Which is hard to remember when all the stories + marketing tell us otherwise. So we have to remind each other.

Sister. Don’t pull another all nighter. If you’re spiraling in stress it means you’re expecting too much of yourself. If you’re crying with overwhelm it means you need to let more things go. Take tomorrow off. Close the laptop every night at 6. Plan a trip. Take social media free weekends. Go to therapy. Get massages. Be more vulnerable with friends. Journal. Insert a million healthy actions (+ I of course am not presuming to have any insight on what could have helped this one woman) but don’t wait.

The next level you’re working + waiting to get to is going to be wonderful. But it doesn’t mean you’ll be happier. Choose to be happy now. And call your girlfriends. ❤️ #WroteThisForMyself #ChooseHappiness

PS Kate, thank you for sharing your creativity + being my favorite brand mentor. You’ve inspired me as a business woman + that impact is not lost with your leaving too soon.

We don’t talk enough about heartbreak that isn’t romantic. ❤️ What stood out in comments on my last post was your pain around heartbreak not from a guy (insert sexual orientation), but false friends or lost community.

We know logically when you're single, guys (again, gender) will come + go. Every. Single. One you meet! Except for one.

Weeping, desolate, inconsolable, don’t want to get out of bed, can’t breath. It’s miserable. But despite the pain those partings are actually normal.

Friends however CAN be forever. It doesn’t HAVE to end. You can have multiple friends, make new ones + keep the old.

Men came + went on Sex And The City, but the girls stayed together. Oodles of romantic guest stars on Friends, but it’s when the 6 of them parted we wept.

When you say you went thru a breakup, we think romantic. But friend/community breakups can carry more shame, pain, whiplash, loneliness.

My journal in the last years isn't filled with forgiving any ex’s. All prayers of forgiveness are platonic. Any guy I’d crossed with was moot when I met Beau, but despite dear new friends the loss of old ones was still hard to find peace with.

Yet the #1 thing I know to be true from the last few years of my life is this: GOD HAS A BETTER PLAN.

I knew deep down I wasn’t totally fulfilled by my friends. I didn’t want to admit that because they were all I had + I cared for them. But we weren’t growing together, or not in the same direction.

The people in our life now are FIRE. They inspire, challenge, encourage, go deep with me, I am so much more safely vulnerable with them.

Oh. And if my heart hadn’t been broken, community lost, betrayed by friends… I'd never have meet Beau. (FULL STOP. REREAD.)

If my business partners hadn’t had their hearts broken in different ways by other companies, promises… we never would have met.

Two of my closest girlfriends came into my life because of a breakup in their life.

So many of my loves came because of a closed door, a loss, somewhere else + we’re all happier.

Mourn the loss. Forgive. Have hope. New loves are coming soon. 💋 My life attests: LOVE ALWAYS GETS BETTER.

Two years ago I was on a 4 month sabbatical in Europe. It was such a blessing! But life was also really hard.

My business was exhausting. I was enduring betrayal of false friends. Putting trust in the wrong people to help me. Had started over at a new church in the last year. Was desperately fighting my anxiety but not sure if I was winning.

I remember towards the end of my trip I was in Nice, France for a month by myself + I would cry in the shower every single day, listening to music + pleading for something I couldn’t put into words... for things to just get easier.

Today I’m in a season where it feels like I’ve been blessed with everything I ever dreamed of. (Mind you that doesn’t mean perfect, no one’s life ever is.) My incredible now fiancé (sneak peek of our engagement shoot in IG Stories), brilliant friends, phenomenal business partners, gorgeous home, opportunity to travel + write.

If you’re struggling, this may make you feel even more defeated but flip that on its head + hear my story as hope.

That it may be dark today and yes there will be sunshine, but the best part is — you don’t have to know how to get there.

I had no idea how to get to a new season in my business, how to start over at a new church when things fell apart, how to heal my anxiety. I did them all anyway. I just kept walking the best I knew how + the path unfolded.

Sometimes it feels like you will die. You won’t. Like you’re lost. You aren’t. Like you can’t work any harder. You probably can’t + don’t have to. What you’re doing is enough. Just keep walking.

Take courage, my friend. 💋 #LoveNoteFromParis #MoreOnIGStories

Who is watching the Royal Wedding tomorrow?! 🍾 Yay or nay?

I for one am on no less than two group chats about it, attending/hosting two parties (first one you’re SO going to want to see so check IG Stories tomorrow!), after having had it on my calendar for MONTHS + waiting with baited breath to see what Megan’s dress looks like.

By the way I’d love for it to be off the shoulder + non lace sleeve bc it will forever be posted right next to Kate’s. (Kate doesn’t own that, but when it’s your world famous sister-in-law, you want to be your own woman.) I’m hoping there’s some architecture, embellishment, something beyond the classic satin + lace which is so lovely, even trumped vs ballgown, simply bc I want her to push the envelope.

Right now across the ocean is an American girl falling asleep knowing she’ll wake tomorrow to become a princess with the whole world watching. I. Can. Not. Handle the joy + magical movie moments of it all.

I literally cried watching the clip of her + her mom walking into the hotel a few hours ago.

However in inviting girls over tomorrow I could not believe how many friends “forgot about the wedding + made other plans”. What?! How did you not all have this on your calendar for months along with the Taylor Swift concert you’re seeing this summer?!

I love London. I love the monarchy. I love movie moments. I love the idea of people all over the world experiencing something joyful together.

I love stories of women who had brilliant careers before they met their husband. I keep telling my single friends, “If you haven’t met him yet, it’s because you’re both just becoming more epic + raising your standards”. Let’s be honest, Harry wouldn’t have married the luggage girl from Deal Or No Deal. She had to work with the Canadian President on global initiatives. And Harry had some growing up to do. It’s a story of patience + providence.

I love love. 🍾 What are your thoughts on it?

PS With wedding on the brain I’ve got more wedding dress shopping on my IG Stories!

You know how when something has been sitting on your to-do list for forever, it just feels heavier + heavier? ✈️ Just finally booked all SIX of our flights + all our ABB’s for Paris + Spain!!!

Headed to Paris to write my style book for you! Then Spain for a wedding + our anniversary. (Can’t wait to bring you along!)

For the last week I have been working so focused my brain is mush come 6pm. But when you get in the zone + are really crossing things off your to do list + making progress, it feels SO GOOD!

Hoping this encourages someone to, as my mother would say, “blitz” today + start knocking off things that have been sitting on your list for forever. They aren’t AS big as they seem, that’s just the weight of failure + shame that’s been piling upon seeing them there for so long, or the sunk cost of starting without the endorphin win of finishing.

TIP 1: Set a timer. Give yourself 10 or 30 min to run around the house + clean up or whatever the task is.

TIP 2: Commit to finishing. I spent countless hours working on our flights or ABBs but then we wouldn’t decide + when I’d go back I’d forget why X flight didn’t work + half the ABB’s I’d saved would be booked + I’d want to check if there were new ones... Gah! Fight to get the info you need + make a decision. I was a booking fiend for about 90 minutes, while on video chat with Beau as my backup brain, + felt such accomplishment when done!

TIP 3: Write down your next steps. We had a brainstorming sesh about our wedding yesterday + then I wrote on a post-it our next steps (you text him, I’ll Google this, I’ll ask the vendor that Q). Had I not, this morning I’d already been swimming-brained on what we said we’d do next.

TIP 4: What helps or works for you? Share it below as we all need it!

Thursday’s are for making things happen, m’dear! (wink)

This is going to sound silly, but stick with me. Yesterday I read an article about Kim Kardashian thanking her personal trainer of the last year. This is going to sound silly, but stick with me. 💋 Yesterday I read an article about Kim Kardashian thanking her personal trainer of the last year. I then clicked on that woman’s IG + noted this:

She had a private victory, before she had a public one.

Long before she was a celebrity trainer, or anyone’s trainer, she trained herself. With no one watching. No Instagram audience. Unhappy with her body after pregnancy, she decided to start making a change. Just the hard, dirty, messy, slow, painful work that it takes to have a victory.

I think that’s an encouragement for someone.

Do you want to have an impact, make a difference, feel more successful in what you’re trying to do? Do you want the relationship, health, healing, breakthrough? Your life version of “having a top celebrity client” — but does it feel hard, lonely, small, overwhelming right now? That’s the way it happens.

It’s your trials that will give you authority. If it wasn’t hard, you wouldn’t be as able to help people through their hard.

There are things I’m good at but struggle to teach, because they’ve always come easily. The things I’ve had to climb through the trenches for — a successful business, peace with my body, joy in my beauty — those things I can speak to deeply in a way that is so helpful to those in my world.

So if you’re a fellow entrepreneur feeling discouraged with your number of sales, revenue, size of your list or Instagram following, take heart.

The beautiful wedding doesn’t come without the season of singleness or seemingly wasted time on failed first dates. A marriage can’t be strong without years of pouring in.

If you’re not totally in love with your beauty, it’s a slow nature process of education, healing, wisdom, action, rest.

We keep looking towards the sun, even when the sky is cloudy. We celebrate small victories far tinier than the big one we dream of.

In other words, darling girl, you are victorious everyday. 💋 Though no one may see it, yourself included. Until day 1,827 when it all adds up to the public victory that everyone sees + celebrates, yourself included. #ElegantExcellence #EncourageBeauty

The tears say so much about our hearts as women. For years the show Say Yes To The Dress has been my favorite market research as a stylist. (Kleinfeld’s visit in pinned IG Stories.) • I love hearing women talk about how they want to feel, look, how they see their bodies. How different we are, ... The tears say so much about our hearts as women. 💕 For years the show Say Yes To The Dress has been my favorite market research as a stylist. (Kleinfeld’s visit in pinned IG Stories.)

I love hearing women talk about how they want to feel, look, how they see their bodies. How different we are, how confident or insecure, modest or what sexy means to us. Sadly how mothers + sisters break down our confidence, or how all their kind words can’t heal our own insecure heart.

My second favorite moment is when the woman cries. Why do they always cry? Because our hearts as women desire to feel beautiful. And when we do (thanks to the most expensive gown we’ve ever worn; good clothing is powerful) — it takes our breath away + we cry from a feeling of joy, peace, “wow this is how God wants my heart to feel always”.

But my FAVORITE moment is when the women with her cry. When moms, sisters, best friends cry because they feel so much joy at seeing her feel so much joy.

It tells me that at heart we’re not competitive, but our beauty encourages beauty, our joy rises joy, our peace brings peace.

I will cry. Mostly over how much I love Beau (I cry over that a lot!) But I may cry less than some because the work I’ve done over the years has made me feel beautiful more often, more at peace with my beauty daily.

That’s the real moment. Not when you have on the gown. But when you can see yourself as beautiful in something simpler. Yes the gowns are gor-geous. Yes I will feel like a member of the royal family for a day! But feeling beautiful isn’t a shocking experience to me.

And it isn’t because you think I’m thin or pretty. Having taught hundreds of women in my style class + watched years of Say Yes, I know those things don’t correlate. The most classically beautiful women can be the most insecure + vice versa.

It’s because I’ve done the work. It’s why I’m writing my first book. It’s why I run a company that explores what makes women feel beautiful.

And when they do, they run around giddy like in the video above. Ha. More in pinned IG Stories + new on IG Stories tomorrow! 💕 #EncourageBeauty #DressJoyfully

The ring was my grandmother’s 💍 She saved up her tip money as a manicurist in her home to buy it for herself.

As a friend mused, “What does that say about how she valued herself, her joy, her beauty that she would invest in herself like that, especially in her era!”

I remember watching her bedtime routine of creams + lotions at her vanity as a little girl. How she’d wrap her hair in a thin pink scarf so as not to mess up her curls during sleep.

Yet it wasn’t until Beau gave me this ring that I realized: she worked for herself, making women feel beautiful + building relationship. Goodness we have a lot in common! (Plus I would totally wear that bathing suit when you swipe left. And B’s next winter style should be inspired by Grandad in Europe.)

It was only a few months before we got engaged that it crossed my mind. I thought it would be less romantic to shop for a ring before, but knew he couldn’t chose for me. I remembered my grandmother left us two rings, one I thought was a honeycomb of gold with pinprick diamonds. Not a real wedding ring, but a sweet placeholder.

When we got engaged I was in such a state of shock + joy I barely even processed the ring. But once I did I was instantly in love.

My favorite part is how many people look at it + say, “It’s so you!” + “I knew you’d have a vintage ring!” before I’ve told them we didn’t choose it. And that every wedding dress I love seems to elicit “It so goes with your ring” comments.

Let this inspire you to invest in a few pieces to pass down in your family!

And yes, this photo confirms National Kiss A Redhead Day is one of my favorites! 💍I met a redhead (1-2% of population) at church (3% of marriages) because I don’t like to do what everyone else is doing! Ha. Wonder if Grandma Wanda was like that too... (wink)

Things I never dared to dream include... 💋

Feeling confident enough to leave the house without makeup on

Feeling peace in my body without losing weight (same weight I’ve always been, such a different vision of my body)

My legit grown-up job meaning I can work from home, couch, bed, coffee shop, Dad’s hospital room, niece’s gymnastics class, Miami by the pool last week for an extended engagement-moon or anywhere in the world

Making enough money that I now see I can take care of my parents one day, instead of all the years they were my backup if I needed help

Being successful without having to work my way up any ladder, wait my turn, network, schmooze (choreographer, professor, other careers I thought I wanted always had a game playing element)

Feeling (while a work in progress) closer to someone who’s calm in a storm than someone who flies off the handle

Seeing my personality + character flaws (more often) not as devastating broken truths but things about myself I can change + heal over time

So much about my upcoming marriage that I won’t dive into but is just 10x more blessed bc of the peace, freedom, healing + joy that’s come from running a business + the lifestyle of #ElegantExcellence

Writing that list I realized everything that exceed my dreams, I turn around to teach. Peace, freedom, healing, joy... It’s so good, I want everyone to have it!

That’s what Dean Street Society is. Whether on IG or in my classes, it’s my way to share joy so you can have more too.

QUESTION: What’s one thing in your life that’s better than you dared to dream? 💋

PS This Paris shoot + advice on tailoring is on the blog (DeanSt.co) 💋 And planning a spring trip Paris to write my first style book should go on the list above!

Spring is coming 💕 What’s your new story on March 1st?

After a year as a stylist I took a “how to build a business class” by @MarieForelo called #BSchool.

I chose it bc all the women I looked up had studied with her, plus we had a similarities (creatives, no business degree, no one to help us financially).

In my “How to Get Paid to be Creative” workshop (last one Thursday) I show a map of how I found everyone in my business (coach, mastermind, employees, consultants, friends, business partners) — via one community: BSchool.

That one investment has paid dividends for years as I went from barely getting by + alone, to a team of 10 + a 7-figure business.

The year after I took BSchool I partnered with Marie + coached 14 women thru. Over 5 years I’ve seen over 750 members of Dean St learn from Marie + I to grow their businesses.

Along the way I had a front row seat to their fears, challenges, ceilings, while experiencing my own. When I looked for the answer no one was teaching what I call “the rare business path of less hustle, more life”
— more joy, less overwhelm. So I spent years discovering it for myself, my students, + created #ElegantExcellence.

For the next 3 days Marie + I offer BSchool + Elegant Excellence for the price of one. 💕 (Already in one + want the other? I have special bonuses for you, email me.)

THIS IS A ONCE A YEAR OFFER + there is no reason to put your dream of creativity, business, freedom on hold for another year. Explore what’s possible at ElegantExcellence.com (link in bio) + read success stories that can be you at DeanSt.co/reviews.

Each student also joins our sponsor team as we donate a portion of your tuition towards a well in Africa with @CharityWater! 💕 When you invest in your education + business, we do the same for a girl or woman who gets the opportunity once she doesn’t have to walk all day for water. Powerful!

Whether mentoring from Marie + I, growing your business elsewhere or something personal (saying no to volunteering bc you’re burnt out or yes to a gluten free diet)... Spring is coming. How will you bringing more light to your life?

QUESTION: What will you say yes or no to come Thursday, March 1? 💕

For the last month I’ve been praying for you + I want you to know what I’ve been saying.

I’ve never actually shared publicly what I pray for I don’t think, but this morning it feels appropriate.

February Month o’ Business Love has been dedicated to those with dreams they’ve yet to start or truly shine in.

My prayer (+ that of my business partner, his wife, people you've never met + had no idea were praying for you) has been this:

God let us be a source of hope for the hopeless. To the exhausted, overwhelmed, stuck, wanting to believe their life can have more joy, help us show them there’s a way!

God let us be a source of courage for the fearful. To those frozen in anxiety, over-analysis, perfectionism, help us encourage them that all remarkable things in life are worth taking the risk for!

God let us be a catapult for those who have a genuine business in their future. Anyone who isn’t meant to be an entrepreneur, give them a clear no in their gut, a red light in their spirit. To those who will flourish + find freedom on this path, help us affirm that call on their life!

Help me to vulnerably share my story to banish any lies or excuses holding people back; be honest about how I learned + grew, what I struggled (struggle) with to give others the same opportunities + success I have.

Thank you for this life that exceeds my wildest dreams + allowing me to show gratitude by passing it onto others. Amen.

(You can ask my team, we have said + written versions of this many times!)

These final few days are packed with gifts for you. Let me brush my teeth (ha) + then I’ll recap on IG Stories all the resources/links available to you so check back later.

But join me at 4pm EST today for a happy hour chat with the woman who taught me how to build a business, @MarieForleo. Visit HilaryAndMarie.com or link in bio to get a seat.

You may not be called to be an entrepreneur. If you are, I’ve been called to help you. And whatever you’re meant to do I believe it’s meant to use all of your talents, bring you joy + security, + that the first step is you saying yes. ❤️

In one word, what do you pray for? ❤️(Whatever that means to you)
