Despite its long history dating back to the early 70's, proximity to Seattle, and fabled sandbag grading, it's only become more popular with the recent release of a new guidebook.

In 1986, the late Todd Skinner established what would become the hardest crack climb in the country at the time, and named it City Park. At 5.13d, the climb would only see 5 ascents over the decades, and most recently, the first female free ascent by Brittany Goris (@gorisb).

Brittany is one of the most committed climbers I've known. Brittany exudes a passion for the sport like no one else I know. With her recent send of one of the country's hardest, her next plan is to spend some time giving back by joining the Washington Climbing Conservation Initiative (WCCI). Headed by Access Fund, the Access Fund Conservation Team, Washington Climbers Coalition (WCC), American Alpine Club, and several local businesses, the WCCI takes on a massive conservation effort to all the larger and impacted crags around the state. Since my last post we've had not one, but TWO X Class solar flares! The first was X2.2, and the second was X9.3! There was a CME associated with the X9.3 flare, and the NASA prediction model is showing it directly impacting the Earth.

We are currently waiting on the CME cloud from the M Class flares that happened on Monday, G3 level storming is expected tonight and tomorrow. The energy from the X Class flare should be arriving sometime Friday or Saturday.

If the Bz index points south while we are in the energy stream, we have a great chance at seeing the Northern Lights over the next 4 or 5 nights if you live in a higher lattitude and have clear skies.

My favorite sites to see all of the graphs and charts are Solarham.net and Spaceweather.com.

I'm interested to see what this energy is going to be like when it comes in... Stay grounded my friends!

The bones of the hand & wrist provide w/support & flexibility to manipulate objects in many different ways. Each hand contains 27 distinct bones that give the hand an incredible range and precision of motion, which than forms into 19 bones later on.
The 5 long thin metacarpal bones of the Palm extend from the carpus to each of the digits of the hand. Each metacarpal is #'d from 1-5, Metacarpal 1 connecting to the bone of the thumb, Metacarpal 2 connecting to the index finger, Metacarpal 3 connecting to the ring (middle) finger, Metacarpal 4 connecting to the bone of the one by the pinky, and Metacarpal 5 connecting to the bone of the pinky.

Oh down dog, one of (if not, the first) yoga pose we first learned on our mats. For some, this is a challenging pose, and for others this is considered to be a resting pose (or a transitional pose when we come into flows). However you categorize this “inverted V” shape, there are so many benefits while hanging out in this puppy inspired asana! 🐕 Let’s first cue up the alignment. As we exhale into this pose from our Up-dog, feet and hand position shouldn’t really move much. Rolling back onto the soles of your feet, you can adjust slightly if you have a long(er) or short(er) torso. Hands and feet are pressed firmly into the mat, almost as if you are pressing away from your mat, trying to rip it apart (ok, maybe not too aggressively – but you get the point 🙈). Arms are at an external rotation so the eyes of your elbows are facing forward with index fingers pointing forward. There should be a natural lengthening of the spine with your head tucked slightly so the back of your neck continues the straight line of your spine (gaze between your feet, or even your navel!). Feet should be parallel to each other with the goal of reaching the heels to the ground to feel that nice hamstring stretch. But don’t worry if it’s not there yet. A bend in the knees is totally acceptable, and in fact a great way of stretching it out is alternating the bend from knee to knee (walk your dog!)☝️So let’s stretch out those dogs!

Other houses focus on youth from childcare facilities making the jump into adulthood.. A typical Echo House has two groups of people moving in under one roof: Those who are seeking help and those who want to help - in reality it’s a bit more blurry, because let’s face it, we all are needy in some way and we all have something to give! There is, for example in our high school house for girls, 10 girls living with 4 young adults who help the girls with their homework, cry with them when their boyfriends break their hearts, getting worked up about dirty rooms and laundry . . . they eat together, laugh together and learn the lessons of life together." Checked my ketones today and I'm at 1.4mmol which is great and my glucose reading this morning was 4.6mmol which gives me a glucose ketone index of 3.2.

Anything between 3-6 is considered a healthy state of ketosis where your brain and body will function optimally!
My aim is to try pull my ketones upto 3-4 and achieve a ratio of 1 because this is where medical science believes the body will repair its self using the autophagy process.
It's very hard to achieve this with carbs or too much protein so ill be trying to extend my intermittent fasting hours by not eating after 8pm and trying to hold off until 1-2pm for meal 1. 5pm for meal 2 and 8pm for meal 3.

But to account for the lower protein and small eating windows my workouts this week are as follows.

Mon: 40 mins cv am & full body weights pm
Tues: 45 mins cv & 1 hour gentle walk
Weds: 1 hour walk am & 45 mins full body into gymnastics pm
Thurs: 1 hour power walk am & yoga pm
Friday: 1 hour power walk am & 60 min full body pm
Saturday: 45 min CV & mobility am
Sunday 45 min cv & mobility am & gymnastics PM.

Each full body workout starts off with warm-up into some heavy leg work (5 rep aim) for 30 mins into some push-pull compound lifts for the upper body for 39 mins.
The CV can be replaced with 60 min power walks if I'm feeling a bit low on energy & I am to have only 2 meals on the CV only days.

🍚 There are many varieties of oats. Typically oats cut for oatmeal are processed into three forms. The least processed being steal cut oats, then rolled oats and then instants oats which have gone through a longer steaming and rolling process than the rolled oats and making them the most processed but the fasted cooking option.
🍚 Generally 1/4 cup oats has ~150kcal, 5g protein, 2.5g fat, 27g carbohydrate and 3-4g fibre
💥 Microwaving- there is nothing wrong with this method if your in a rush, it helps to create a nourishing breakfast in ~90seconds, plus it’s a convenient option for an office breakfast. Tip: Opt for plain varieties as flavoured varieties (even the healthy sounding ones) have added sugar and added ingredients (oat flour, caramel colour and guar gum). Remember you can add you own toppings.
🔥Hob - if you prefer a nuttier taste, steal cut oats are the best option but these take a while longer to cook on the hob. Steal cut oats require a four to one ratio of water to oats.
🍚 Whilst all plain oats contain the same nutritional profile, old-fashioned (steal cut) oats has a much lower glycaemic index than instant oatmeal.
🍚Flavour, longer cooking oatmeal has a better flavour and texture than fast cooking oatmeal.
🍚Preparing steal cut oatmeal in the evening when you have more time and then reheating in the morning does not change the nutritional content

Investors were focused on Friday's Employment report and the policy on tariffs this week. Despite unexpected results on both fronts, however, there was little reaction in mortgage rates, and they finished the week nearly unchanged. Against a consensus forecast of 175,000, the economy added just 104,000 jobs in March. In addition, downward revisions subtracted 50,000 jobs from the results for prior months. Even with the shortfall, however, the economy has added an average of 202,000 jobs per month during the first three months of 2018. The unemployment rate was flat at 4.1%. Average hourly earnings, an indicator of wage growth, slightly exceeded expectations. They were 2.7% higher than a year ago, up from an annual rate of 2.6% last month.
On Thursday, President Trump threatened to add an additional $100 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods on top of the previously announced $50 billion. Chinese officials quickly said that they would respond with proportional measures. Some people think that both sides are just attempting to gain leverage in trade negotiations and that the tariffs will never be imposed. If these actions result in a trade war, though, it likely would have multiple effects. One would be reduced global economic activity, which would be good for mortgage rates, as it would reduce the outlook for future inflation. However, tariffs also raise the price of imported goods, which would increase inflationary pressures. These offsetting factors make the overall impact on mortgage rates difficult to predict. Top products imported from China are cars, steel, clothes, footwear, pork, fruit, appliances, electronics, tools, home decorations, and the list goes on.

Looking ahead, the minutes from the March 21 Fed meeting will come out on Wednesday. These detailed minutes provide additional insight into the debate between Fed officials about future monetary policy. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) also will come out on Wednesday.

As I cover in my new book, FTO is the gene strongly associated with your body mass index and, consequently, your risk for obesity and diabetes. When you have the genetic variant like I do, it gives you sloppy control of leptin, a hormone in charge of satiety. In other words, you’re hungry all the time. The way you regulate FTO is with exercise, at least 30 minutes per day, and a low-carbohydrate food plan that’s high in fiber. (More on page 21 of #Younger.)

When it comes to longevity, the best way to turn on FOXO3 is regular saunas, 4X per week for 20-30 minutes. Turn on SIRT1 with intermittent fasting, i.e., eat breakfast later and dinner early. Turn down mTOR by exercising in the morning in a fasting state.

APOE is a bit more complicated because there are 4 possible alleles instead of the usual 2. The wild type or normal gene is to inherit the APOE3 allele from each parent. The APOE4 allele is the one associated with Alzheimer’s disease. About 10 to 15% of the population inherits one copy of APOE4, which increases the risk of Alzheimer’s in women by 2-3X. Two copies of APOE4 increases the risk by 8-15X. Learn how to silence this gene in chapter 11 of #Younger. Keep in mind that changes in the BRAIN start decades before symptoms appear, so it’s important to take action early, ideally in your forties or sooner.

Spiralize 1 Jicama and chop into smaller strings
In a bowl, mix 1/4 cup of coconut milk, 2 tbsp of almond milk (or you could use some water to thin it), powdered cardamom and a dash of cinnamon.
Add the coconut milk to the jicama, and refrigerate. Serve with unsweetened coconut flakes and berries on top. .
The longer the jicama sits in it, the more sweeter it gets.

This #breathing technique derives its name from the black Indian bee called Bhramari. (Bhramari = type of Indian bee; pranayama = breathing technique)
The exhalation in this pranayama resembles the typical humming sound of a bee, which explains why it is named so.

How To Practice Bhramari Pranayama (Bee Breath)

1. Sit up straight in a quiet, well ventilated corner with your eyes closed. Keep a gentle smile on your face.
2. Place your index fingers on your ears. There is a cartilage between your cheek and ear. Place your index fingers on the cartilage.
3. Take a deep breath in and as you breathe out, gently press the cartilage. You can keep the cartilage pressed or press it in and out with your fingers, while making a loud humming sound like a bee.
4. You can also make a low-pitched sound but it is a good idea to make a high-pitched one for better results.
Breathe in again and continue the same pattern for 6-7 times.
Keep your eyes closed for some time. Observe the sensations in the body and the quietness within. You can also practice Bhramari pranayama lying on your back or lying on your right. While practicing the pranayama while lying down, just make the humming sound and do not worry about keeping your index finger on the ear. You can practice the Bee pranayama 3-4 times every day. Instant way to relieve tension, anger and anxiety. It is a very effective breathing technique for people suffering from hypertension as it calms down the agitated mind.

🖐🏼Spread fingers wide. Not so wide that it's uncomfortable, but like you're playing a piano or putting on a glove. Remember, you might only be balancing on your hands, so don't be afraid to spread your fingers and take up some space so you have a bigger base on which to balance.
🖐🏼Press through all 4 corners of the hand. Use your full hand, don't lean towards one edge or the other. (See picture.) 🖐🏼Grip the mat, so much that your first knuckles bend a little. Think "creepy" fingers or like you're palming a basketball. These are your brakes! If you're in an arm balance or inversion, your fingertips are what will stop you from going over. The base of your palms is what stops you from coming down.
🖐🏼 Turn hands out slightly so either the middle finger or index finger are parallel with the sides of your mat. The latter will help if you have tight shoulders.
🖐🏼Think about bringing your thumb and pinky towards each other to help engage through the inner edge of your hand.
🖐🏼These next four all go together: press the ground away, straighten your arms, spin eyes of the elbows forward, wrap triceps in.

I had the best time learning about cherries this past weekend in Washington state.

You must give yourself more credit than that, more love and respect. Food is fuel and food is medicine - it should not be something to fear, but to embrace. Think of your diet as a benefit - consider the things nutritious food can DO for you, your health & well-being. Food is not the enemy. Your mindset is.

MFP uses one singular formula (do you KNOW how many formulas are out there?!) *hoping* it fits the masses. It doesn’t take into account your body mass index, the current state of your metabolism, if you’ve been under-eating previously or over-eating, your hormones, stress levels, average hours of sleep a night - all of these things AND MORE affect the outcome of your body composition.

“Eat less + move more,” is not the answer, but MFP prays that you think it will be.

My breasts rivaled that of every current porn star gracing the deep web and I was producing enough milk to start my own Tittie Cheese line. But, Byrdie was a nursing pro and latched within 2 hours of exiting my body. *
Despite being on the road 250 days a year, I managed to breast feed her 23 months. I am pretty sure 1/4 of the entire human population has seen my areolas, or at least the left one as Byrdie refused to be covered in any way. While I loved that time with her at the end of February I left for a 3 week trip to India and decided to end “boobie time.”

As my milk dried up, my new reality became clear. What once were perky, full, luscious breasts now resemble that of 3 day old water balloons hanging off my chest by push pins with steamer clams attached to the bottoms. When I sit, they comfortably rest in my lap and if I don’t wear a bra I could very easily tied them in a knot for safe keeping. And while she’s no longer nursing, Byrdie still feels the need to have a hand down my shirt and roll my nipples in-between her thumb and index finger 20 times a day. In other humiliating news, yesterday she pulled my empty milk sack 4 feet from her being on the bed to standing off the bed, me still laying in the same place, exclaiming, “Stretchy!” *
3 nights ago while deep in conversation at a party regarding the impossibility of a sex life while co-sleeping, I spied my 2 yr old also deep in conversation with a nude, marble bust in the corner of the living room. I saw her stare at the perfectly sculpted breasts with a look of sad recognition. And then, just like that, she embraced the memory. I swear if I had not weaned her, I would have been breast feeding Byrdie Mae in the limo on the way to her senior prom.

When making a lifestyle change it’s really important to work with and not against your cravings. There’s always ways to make healthier versions of almost anything or at least capture similar flavors using whole ingredients. Below’s a recipe for French Toast, using bananas for the batter for those of us who are egg-free. Switched out white bread for Ezekiel bread. Can be topped with whatever you like; berries are wonderful because they are high in antioxidants and lower on the glycemic index so have a much milder effect on our blood sugar levels. Just take care to purchase organic berries as most can have a high pesticide load. Check the @environmentalworkinggroup list of dirty dozen to help decide organic or not. -Xo💕



Vegan Banana French Toast

Ingredients

Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel Bread
3 ripe bananas

3/4 cup organic coconut milk

1/4 cup organic coconut cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

coconut oil •

Blend the bananas, coconut milk, coconut cream, and vanilla. Add cinnamon if you opted to use regular bread. Prepare french toast as usual dipping each piece of bread into the batter. Use coconut oil to fry to make it slightly healthier. Make as much as you want, then serve plain or use agave or grade B syrup if you need additional sweetener.

"Natural" sugar that you are used to see in the market goes way beyond traditional table sugar. Keep in mind even if those option are healthier, some lower in GI, it still marketing, and it is still processed sugar (if you go like this, even table sugar came from a plant at the beginning 😂)

Honey and molasses are often prefer as table sugar because of their "natural properties", but they have the exact same glycemic index as sugar ☝🏼️ .

A better option that I recommend would be coconut sugar or agave nectar because they have a lower glycemic load -- which basically means it will jack up your blood sugar levels more slowly -- but it's still very refined and processed ! .

So chose them wisely, and keep that in mind ! If you are craving something sweet, instead of instantly jump into those "natural" sugar or thing because it's labeled as "natural" it's healthy and unlimited, bunch into some fruits ! Not only you will have this sweet taste, but on top of that you will nourish your body with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibers, & hydrate yourself in the same time ! .

1.) This cost $6 total
2.) 10 Wild fresh jumbo shrimp 🍤 were $5. If you watched my story yesterday you would see that I spent $40 yesterday on a salad at a fancy restaurant for only 4 of these 😳. The experience was a little different, but come on that’s cray. (Also, every 3oz of shrimp is 19 grams of protein. This is 8oz.)
3.) Organic avocado and organic apricot were .50 cents each on sale.
4.) apricots are the lowest glycemic Index fruit with the lowest sugar count that you’re going to be able to get. Super legit and delicious.
5.) I don’t have to worry about oils, quality, or preparation that comes along with eating out AND it’s significantly cheaper.
6.) Eating healthy does NOT have to be expensive.

This lifestyle is so much more doable than you realize. Just have to be wiling and a little creative from time to time.

Always visualize your goals. Eating out should always be for the experience and NOT for a quality meal. I can guarantee that there will always be something in that food that lets you down. Definitely not telling you to be weird and never do it. I do all the time... However, if you’re just getting lunch real quick and you don’t need the “experience..” Then creating something at the grocery store will always supersede quality, preparation, and cost. 💥Booom.

Almost a year ago, my mother had a breathing scare and I rushed to my parents’ apartment afraid we were going to lose her. Amidst a tearful conversation that evening, I promised her (among other things) that I would get my act together and go to grad school. Later that night, undeterred by the somber mood, my father - who has insisted I go to grad school since before I went to regular school - excitedly jabbed his index finger into my chest and exclaimed, “Now I have it on record! You promised your mother on her death bed!” He wasn’t wrong.

But when mom passed in July, I found it difficult to focus. The energy I would have ordinarily put into application essays and the GRE went instead to trying to simu keeping my head above water. “After the memorial” turned into “maybe I’ll wait a year.” Then the day after the NYC marathon, with less than a month before deadlines, I woke up and realized I couldn’t live with this unfulfilled promise around my neck another minute. So I threw my full weight into the process, skipping Thanksgiving to cram, pestering @txprice to edit my essays, abd begging colleagues, mentors, and friends like @doriantwarren @dreaflynn @rortybomb @joellecarissa @katduty and @michelleimiller (among others) to offer advice, write me letters of rec, or listen to endless equivocation. I took the GRE the day before my first apps were due, sent them in, then waited 3 long months, questioning every day the wisdom of applying to 4 of the top 5 programs with no safety school.
Two weeks ago, my efforts paid off and I was accepted into my first choice - UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public policy. I don’t know if it was mom’s final gift, my supportive recommenders, or my own hard work that did the trick, but I am extremely gratified to have this opportunity to continue building my understanding of our socioeconomic system, and to continue towards a career that will serve in some small way to make it more just, equitable, and innovative for all those who reside within it.

In the United States, the only group consistently showing at their ideal weight and BMI was the plant-based one…these averaged 33 pounds (about 15 kilos) lighter than their meat-eating friends.
Even switching one meal or snack per day to a healthy calorie, plant-based one will get you a bit closer to your weight loss goals. With that in mind, I’m going to give you four easy and fun ways to incorporate healthier, more slimming meals and snacks into your day.
1. Breakfast
The easiest meal to make vegan every day is breakfast, because you can make a large juice or smoothie of your choice and carry it with you.
2. Lunch

I suggest eating a huge serving of fruit for a wildly delicious, body-shaping lunch. It can be a monomeal, or a rainbow of different colours. Enjoy as much as you like, until you’re completely satisfied. If you stop before complete satisfaction, then you’ll likely become hungry soon after—not to mention undernourished.
Remember that raw foods are lower in calories but higher in water content, so you need to eat more to get the calories you need and not feel hungry every few hours.
3. Snacks

If, despite your amazing, healthy calorie-packed breakfast and lunch, you still have a desire to snack, that’s fine! Grab a banana, some squishy, yummy Medjool dates, or even some celery or sliced carrots. Keep fruit in your bag everywhere you go, and satisfy those middle-of-the-day cravings the slimming way.

4. Dinner

For some reason, most people find this the most challenging meal to keep plant-based, but that’s only because most of us have a deeply ingrained habit of eating meat and dairy in the evenings.

When a woman or man, yes men can be raped, is Raped or Sexually Assaulted, Forensic Evidence is gathered by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). The Survivor/Victim, who has just experienced a horrific crime, is put through a 4 to 6 hour examination where DNA evidence is gathered from their body’s 2B tested.

Once the testing is completed, the DNA is entered into CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), the FBI’s program of support for Criminal Justice DNA Databases. (National DNA System). In 2009, it was discovered that 100’s of 1000’s, of these kits were sitting on shelves. NEVER tested. Collecting dust instead of Perpetrators. This sends a message to the Survivors/Victims that what happened to them doesn’t matter. That THEY, don’t matter.

In Detroit alone, there were over 11,300 Rape Kits discovered. Untested. In a city that had just declared Bankruptcy. Kym Worthy, a Wayne County Prosecutor, has been working tirelessly to obtain funding to get the backlog cleared. They have just sent their last over 600 kits for testing.

Of the kits tested so far in Detroit, they have discovered 130 Rapists, have over 270 Cases under Active Investigation & have identified over 800 Serial Sex Offenders.
There are 5 reasons to test Rape Kits:

What women don’t know is that HALF of their risk of breast cancer is completely preventable with the way you eat, move, think, and sleep. The highest rates are in North America, Northern (Netherlands) and Western Europe (France), and Israel, and overall 4-5X higher than Asia, but as Asians engage in a more Westernized lifestyle (especially eating processed food), they are catching up. In the US, rates of breast cancer vary by race. White women have a 13% lifetime risk, while African American and Asian women are at 11% risk, and Hispanic women are at 10%. However, the incidence varies by age and type: African American women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer < 40 and are often diagnosed with more aggressive and advanced forms of the disease. That means African american women are more likely to die of breast cancer than other races. While breast cancer in African American women tends to be more biologically aggressive, the disparity also reflects socioeconomic barriers that disproportionately affect African American women and limit prevention, like poverty, discrimination, racial profiling, a reasonable distrust of the healthcare system, and social injustice—in lockstep with genetic, biological, and environmental factors—and lead to different outcomes for White and Black women along the breast cancer continuum from screening to early detection to treatment to survival. These barriers are modifiable. We need biomedical advances, but in addition, we need to reduce disparities by addressing these social barriers as part of comprehensive healthcare reform. We all need to be doing what we can to reduce breast cancer risk, such as eating more vegetables (1-2 #/day), sweating daily with physical activity, getting plenty of sleep, not burning the candle at both ends (i.e., respect for the stress hormones like cortisol), getting to a healthy body mass index and maintaining it, avoiding toxins like alcohol and other endocrine disruptors, tracking and modulating estrogen and insulin levels, even flossing twice/day.
