______
Amputation of the toe due to diabetes.
In general terms, the vast majority of amputations are performed in patients with a diabetic foot. A "dead" finger is one in which the blood supply is so completely impeded that infarction and necrosis develop. The infarction gives rise to dry gangrene, with the unviable tissue becoming dry and black in color (due to the presence of iron sulphide, product of the hemoglobin released by the erythrocytes). This is more commonly seen as a complication of diabetes mellitus and is due to a combination of macro and microvascular diseases. Other important risk factors for peripheral vascular disease (in regard to all atherosclerotic diseases) include smoking, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. The method of amputation (disarticulation vs osteotomy) and the level of amputation (partial or complete phalanx versus the entire digit) depend on numerous circumstances, but are determined primarily by the extent of the disease and anatomy.

🇺🇸Here shows an 82 year old man that came to the ER and stated that he was walking around his home barefoot and felt a random unusual bite close the big toe. After a weeks went by, he noticed some redness around that same area.
The wound that had formed started becoming dark and eventuality started to develop a strong ridiculous odor🤭.
Upon arrival to ER inspection there showed partial necrotized foot and colonized by worms! This patient has now been scheduled for amputation.
.
.
"One interesting fact from this case is that the patients necrotic wound was colonized by a Green Bottle Fly. The female fly is attracted to decaying animal flesh where it lays 150-200 eggs.

#diabete #diabetique #glycemie

Don't sleep on this. @celebdr How would your life change if you were diagnosed with a life threatening disease that you were told was incurable???
The number of people walking around with diabetes [silent killer] compared to those who are undiagnosed is quite alarming and most people usually present with complications.
Africa has the highest prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes cases and most of these people die of complications that could have been prevented.
Diabetes is the second commonest cause of blindness and amputation and its interwoven relationship with hypertension, obesity, stroke and heart attack cannot be ignored.

The spread of this epidemic can be prevented through awareness and advocacy.
Diabetes is not caused by sugar as many believe but as a result of problems (deficient/ resiatant) with insulin in the body.
I am sure we all have friends, family, loved ones and neighbors suffering from this killer so I have learned to see diabetes as a challenge I have to rise to each and every day.
Diabetes took a loved one away from me six years ago and I would not want to see that happen to any of you.. The #YADIFightsDiabetesChallenge is a platform for us to create awareness of this epidemic and its preventive measures.

I am a Youth Against Diabetes

I support the Youth Against Diabetes Initiative

We are raising funds to help our sister, Kobeawah who was diagnosed of osteosarcoma (bone cancer), underwent a limb salvage surgery to save her leg but due to financial constraints could not replace the prosthesis in her leg resulting in her upper knee amputation.
An amount of $25,000 is needed to get a Prosthetic limb to enable her walk again.
Please help us support a sister. Any amount would be very much appreciated.

A 71-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a 2-day history of fever and excruciating pain in his left hand that had developed 12 hours after eating raw seafood.

He had a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension and was undergoing hemodialysis for end-stage renal disease.

At the time of presentation, hemorrhagic bullae measuring 3.5 by 4.5 cm had developed on the palm of his left hand (Panel A), and erythematous swelling with confluent tense bullae and ecchymoses had developed on the dorsum of the hand and forearm (Panel B). Surgical intervention was performed urgently, and Vibrio vulnificus was isolated from the bullae. Postoperatively, the patient received intravenous ceftazidime and ciprofloxacin.

V. vulnificuscan cause skin infections after wound exposure to contaminated seawater, as well as primary septicemia through the consumption of contaminated raw or undercooked seafood. Patients with immunocompromising conditions, including chronic liver disease and cancer, are at increased risk for infection and complications. Despite treatment, the skin lesions progressed to deep necrotic ulcers, and amputation of the left forearm was performed 25 days after presentation. The patient did well after the surgery and was discharged home.

You see imgs and hashtags for other people and their loved one, you send your condolences while silently thanking god it isn't specific to your family...its not "close to home." Welp this one hit me like a ton of fucking bricks to my chest, like an amputation of a limb (right arm experiencing pain since your death.) I really thought we would all grow old and gray together (my god you were only 36 years young), talk bs while watching our children mature. This is one arduous nightmare!! I am devastated!!! Enraged!! I am vex with life itself. I miss you so much...i feel confused, heartbroken....and outright exhausted. I feel especially dismayed for your four young children...i hope this too shall pass. All in all, tremendous thanks to all my friends and family who have called and came by to console us during our loss. This literally took me three days to post...just because i am still in a state of denial.

A few years ago, my good bro and retail food chain rival @silasgrant was launching his dope site "The Information Age." You can actually view his site at the link in his bio. He interviewed me to the public about everything that happened in my era of turmoil from multiple surgeries, cancerous tumor diagnosis, and later partial foot amputation. It resulted in heavy weight gain which had me at 309lbs. The interview was launched in Dec 2012, years before I became #NASM certified and before became a trainer at @balancegym and years before I picked up the pen to be signed as the fitness contributor for the greatest website in the cosmos @citlr
I've done some dope appearances since then from doing a vid with my dude @_justdre of District Fresh to doing a fun radio podcast interview with awesome journalist @danellanow.
If you ever wondered, the brace is permanent. That will be how it is forever, but I still lift heavy things, climb mountains (indoors) and have dedicated myself to teaching others the riddle of #Steel

In the article with Silas, we spoke on what it took to overcome such harsh realities and survive. Honestly it's no easy task. There are things that I still deal with everyday. Best I can tell you is I pray a lot, and I rather die than surrender. If you're going to live in this world, you're going to get bloody. Best that you fight as hard as you can until you can no longer fight anymore.
I am thankful for the great friends I have made along the way, the family I have, the lessons I have been able to convey and what lies ahead. There are still dragons to slay, and roads to conquer

I’ve said it so many times ....but this is what courage looks like. This is why shopping at our little thrift store makes a HUGE impact in so many lives. This sweet little boy burned with kerosine at 3 months old. His foot was wrapped and unfortunately healed like this. He’s 10, he has the warmest smile and most lovable hugs . He really is the sweetest little man. He’s never seen a doctor and has faced so much opposition for being different. We found this little guy in Cité Soleil and brought him to a local hospital where he was seen by an incredible team of orthopaedic surgeons from Flagstaff . It was recommended that the best thing for him would be so have a special prosthesis made to attach to his foot with special shoes ,not amputation or surgery . A lot goes into each one of these cases When we do this work . We pay for transportation for our patients, our vehicle ,hospital chart fees , medication costs , medical appointments ,Project Aftershock team members, food for patients for the long days at the hospital and much more . It’s only because of your purchases at our little thrift store that we can continue to do this very important role. We strive to find the most suffering patients who otherwise wouldn’t get medical help and walk along side them to help forever change their lives. To give them a chance to just live a normal life . I’m so humbled to do this work and honoured these people trust us. So thankful for local Haitian medical professionals and Volunteer surgeons, nurses , paramedics and all who come together for one same goal. It takes a team. This little boys journey is just getting started and one of the main reasons I moved to Haiti permanently was for people just like him. To see it through from start to finish and employ Haitians to help lead this work(we couldn’t Do it without our team) . Thank you all for making this possible . We can’t WAIT to find the prosthesis he needs and to be able to share his updates . I love you all so much #projectaftershockthriftstore #projectaftershock #ayiti #haiti #oneteam #courage #prostesis thank you @angelaclarke63 @guenther.karen @photodyob Kathy thorton this is ALL because of you guys

I will continue to remain out of office until after the holiday and will probably go quiet for a while. All outstanding work will be finished and shipped out as soon as I am emotionally able to concentrate.
Upon returning home today with my only intent to curl up with Preacher and get some rest I recieved no greeting from my best buddy; I found him in really rough shape. He was stablalizing before I left. I was sure when I left but had a bad feeling as soon as I got back into town yesterday.
Under the impression his lung may have gotten worse I rushed him to the emergency vet where to my horror, they found no pulse in either of his hind legs. What I thought was respiratory distress was incredible pain from a massive blood clot that was blocking his major artery. In this case nothing can be done, and if so it would require substantial amputation with has a 20% chance of survival and less to be said for quality of life in an ever active breed like abysynian. I suspect a separate clot is what caused the partially collapsed lung. He was diagnosed with heart disease at the emergency vet.

They gave him oxygen, put in a catheter, gave him some medicine, and we hung out for a while, all the while insisting I hold his head.
We left around 9pm. I came home at 2am.

This time of year is always hard for me. I was determined to spend it in good spirits with my little family, but am probably going to spend that time reflecting. I really am not a fan of Christmas, and recent events have me quite broken.
Thank you to everyone who loved Preacher. He was the best and made my life so much happier. He will be missed.

I’m in the worst mood ever. It was not a good time to have a bad day today. I’ve completely lost my cool once more. I’m terrified about having my first (and hopefully only) amputation. I know it’s for the best, I know it’s temporary, I know things will be fine. But absolutely none of these facts can override my body’s natural instinct to want to preserve itself. Millions of years of evolution has ground that in, and no quote across a sunset is gonna change that shit, science wins every time. I’m posting now because my check in time is 5:45am, so it’s like going to the airport except worse. I’ll be stuck in the hospital for a day, then I’ll come home with fucking tubes sticking out of me. Which is gross, I’m so squeamish I don’t even want to know about my own fucking biz. So yeah, this is where I’m at. In less than a day my tits are going to be medical waste, (which in the future I’ll say serves them right they tried to kill me) but in this moment is just straight up depressing. At six she was abandoned by her family for being disabled. She now lives in an orphanage. In 2013, Handicap International found her. She received physiotherapy, corrective surgery (amputation) and prosthesis. Now she can go to school and walk and play like her classmates. Since the day she received her prosthesis, Reema started working on her childhood dream: to become a dancer. Recently she was second in a dance completion. Here she can be seen in her public school in Kathmandu, Népal. ⠀

Please pass the anti-declawing bill in your state this year so that cats will be protected from declawing vets like these. 😾😾😾😾😾😾
With all the facts and studies out about how this barbaric and mutilating amputation procedure is always harmful to the long term health and well-being of a cat, it is time for all declawing vets to stop harming cats and stop pretending like they have good reasons to do it. 😾😾😾😾
If declawing vets continue to do this inhumane procedure to cats for ANY reason, they are unethical and inhumane doctors of veterinary medicine who are guilty of cat cruelty and abuse. #HonorYourOath #DoNoHarm #EaseAndPreventSuffering
Please go to my website, www.citythekitty.com and sign up on my mailing list so that you can personally help us end this sadistic and mutilating procedure that is being done to millions of cats each year in America. 🙏🏻
Also please sign my petitions at the top of my website. Your voice matters and the cats of the world need our help.😽❤️
#pawsneedclaws
Please find an ethical no-declaw vet to take your pets to. Lists of these humane vets are on citythekitty.com, pawproject.org, and declaw.com

Link in Bio********This Labor Day, September 4th 2018, Dan suffered a horrific car accident rendering him in critical condition at a local hospital. Details are still emerging as is the determination on his overall stability.  We do know that he had catastrophic bleeding requiring over two dozen blood transfusions, has lost both of his legs and coded at least once while in the operating room. His condition is tenuous but optimistic currently

Dan remains stable after another long 24 hours. There continues to be a large presence of family, friends and military brothers at the hospital. There was an informative meeting today between family, friends and the wonderful medical team (the Fire Chief leading Dan's extraction), the Emergency Medicine Physician and the attending Trauma Surgeon. The care at this hospital is just unmatched... not only for Dan but for all loved ones at the hospital. Some of the information shared included: "he was the worst I've seen coming out of a car" (Fire Chief), "that crash should have killed most people" (trauma surgeon), there was an amazing medical team of 30-40 people caring for Dan in the ER when he arrived, he received 50-60 units of blood products (which means he lost all of his blood 5-6 times; one of the highest transfusion quantities the surgeon has ever witnessed), and there are multiple surgeries pending (right pelvis, rib fractures, amputation completions, and bilateral hands fractures). It is believed by all parties involved that many miracles have occurred to aid Dan's powerful will to live. "He's here for some other reason," the orthopedic surgeon stated in foreshadowing the monumental life purpose we all feel Dan is being shaped for. He is out of the first phase of stabilization (minute to minute) and is onto the next phase (day by day). They are watching things diligently including the risk for blood clots, infections, sepsis and organ deterioration (kidneys, lung, heart). "Typically if you can get people out of this phase and to wake up, they have a very high chance of getting out of the ICU," said the lead trauma surgeon. #Frogman #LLTB #Survivor

She had been struggling with cancer for quite some time, and soon after her amputation, we were informed that the cancer was still spreading, which was heartbreaking. We began treatment, and it just wasn’t enough. Yesterday was the first day we really began to see how sick she was and how hard she was pushing through all of her pain, but all I can say now is that I am glad the suffering did not last. Sweet little Bailey never deserved to suffer. Thank you to everyone who has followed Bailey’s journey, as I know she was in many of your thoughts and prayers. She brightened our lives so much every single day with that little wiggle. She was an incredible dog, and she will be forever missed, but never forgotten🐾

They stressed her out, she panted the whole time and couldn’t relax in the car. We have dodged rpgs’s and ied’s. So many engagements we stopped doing sworn statements. My “Scunion” brother from another mother. He took “awesome pills with a minor side effect of more awesome!” Ate popcorn with hot sauce ate pasta with hot sauce even cereal...Hell his call sign was hot sauce. We knew each other in and out. We pushed each other to be shit hot so that if someone landed in our care we would do whatever it would take to keep them alive. In the event that wasn’t possible I knew I would have a smoke on deck and a shoulder to lean on. This man has kept me alive in more ways than one through probably the hardest time of my life. Someone whom ill eternally be grateful to have met on this wild road of life. I love you brother. I am glad we were able to walk out of “The Valley Of Death”(Korengal) together brother. I’ll be just as glad to walk back in by your side if you ever shall need it. #kunargunclub #kunar #korengalvalley #pechrivervalley #deathcheaters #deathangels

WILLKOMMEN ZUR ZWEITEN #LIPÖDEM ÄRZTE-AUSTAUSCHBÖRSE- DIESMAL GEHT ES UM OPERATEURE💉Anzeige
_____________________________________
🚫In meinem YouTube Video „Amputation?

WELCOME TO THE FIRST #LIPEDEMA SURGEON EXCHANGE🙌
_____________________________________
Again and again, I get asked if I can recommend a surgeon for Lipedema. Since I don’t know every doctor myself, I got this idea of this post where we can exchange information and recommmendstions❌Please be aware of the fact, that not every doctor who tells he can do a Lipedema surgery is a good Lipedema specialised surgeon! Often There are huge differences ‼️
____________________________
The rules are quite simple ✅EITHER YOU SEARCH OR RECOMMENDED A DOCTOR:
-
You are looking for a surgeon? 🔍 ▪ Where exactly you searching for (area/ country )

You can recommend a good doctor?😍
▪ Please name the postal code and the city where the doctor is located

Of course, you can also directly answer on comments and adjust 😍

TRUAMA VASCULAR THURSDAY.
.
Welcome my fellow @CardiacStrong Endocrine & @NURSEpiration Vascular😷Nurses. Remember that Nursing is not for the faint of Heart or for the weak nauseated stomach.
.
.
This is why it's important to educate our patients about our endocrine system regarding Diabetes. This pt was a non compliant diabetic with a severe diabetic necrotizing foot infection who needed a foot amputation. Therefore his foot had to come off to control sepsis and was immediately put on IV antibiotics until the systemic infection would be cleared. The tool used in this case was a Gigli Saw by @dr_limbreaper who does surgical procedures.
.
.
Remember in nursing school about Diabetes being a disease where our body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin becomes impaired? Put your hands up!! 🙋🏻‍♂️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏿‍♂️🙋🏽‍♀️Of course we remember!!! Diabetes leads to abnormal metabolism of carbs & increased levels of glucose in the blood and urine due to the inability of the body to properly utilize insulin pulling the glucose into the cells for our body’s metabolic needs. Don’t forget to watch my DKA nursing video on 🎥YouTube.
.
.
The two types of diabetes named as type 1 & type 2 diabetes. So insulin dependent or non insulin dependent.
The Symptoms of  type 1 and type 2 diabetes include increased urine output,
excessive thirst,
weight loss,
hunger,
fatigue,
skin problems
slow healing wounds,
yeast infections & tingling or numbness in the feet or toes.
Some of the risk factors for getting diabetes include being overweight or obese, leading a sedentary lifestyle, a family history of diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure).
If you think you may have prediabetes or diabetes please contact your health-care professional.
.
.
Therefore it's important to check their A1C, daily weekly glucose checks following your doctors orders.

Além disso, ele é o primeiro paratleta brasileiro a conseguir um lugar no pódio em um torneio de esportes de inverno de relevância mundial, com o bronze na Copa do Mundo de Snowboard de Aspen, nos Estados Unidos, em 2015. Remember meeting after meeting, from doctors to execs for a decade all looking at me like I was crazy for invisioning prosthetics in art, fashion, music, film... 🤖🎠 From getting a voluntary amputation for health reasons, to pursuing modelling and music & finally bringing all art disciplines together to design my bionic image and legs, it has been exhausting and exciting journey. To create this cultural wedge, just enough for other awesome artists with disabilities to make their mark in the world has been a blessing...
Nevertheless the work is far from over, to surpass the status of cultural novelty and diversity tick box, one must keep smashing the expectations and keep setting new standards to affirm that this viewpoint is here to stay and will liberate more people from the imposed insecurities that we were taught to believe #createyourownhistory

This week’s #RoleModelMonday is Marsha Elle, an amputee model, singer and motivational speaker who is inspiring people around the world to conquer their dreams! Marsha was born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, a rare birth defect in which the femur bone in the upper thigh area is either malformed or missing. Despite this defect which resulted in amputation, she still followed her dreams of being a musician and model. She released her first song “Hallelujah” at the age of 17, and has since released more music highlighting her strength and capabilities. Marsha says that “God used music to save my life. If you are willing,  you and your gift will not go to waste.” Keep inspiring and slaying the world, Marsha. ✨

Finally one of the valid entries is the high amputation of the limb.
We had to analyze the following items for decision-making:

1.) Owner did not allow amputation when it was recommended on several occasions by various colleagues, in USA and Mexico. (2) Owner traveled many miles looking for a different alternative for your pet. (3) It is a dog of great weight (74.5kg) that usually do not adapt properly to a high amputation. (4) Let the tumor is unacceptable.
We decided to operate it, make a salvage technique tibial proximal and femoral distal ostectomy with arthrodesis, aware that this patient has poor prognosis by the type of tumor that it’s has.
The objective was to allow the support of the Member and remove the cause of pain that is the tumor. We recognize is a heroic measure what we are looking for, with the possibility of complications and end up in a high amputation in the same way, however we think that if we form a fusion arthrodesis, patient could have better quality of life time that go to live.
We do not consider it acceptable to leave the tumor would imply permanent and inhumane pain.
We committed to the owners that if evolution was not acceptable we would perform the amputation.
We stabilise with blocked three titanium plates

We believe that if it is possible, but we cannot guarantee the happy outcome, it is not a common case, the patient is in rehab to strengthen muscles and to get as soon as possible to the anatomic changes that were made with the fusion.
At the end we are satisfied with the stability, the patient tries to support the member in this moment and is recovery.
I'll share results later.

After a second consultation, it is agreed that hind leg amputation would be best for Drago’s quality of life. The multiple fractures and breaks would cause future suffering. Please donate to Drago’s upcoming surgery at www.nybullycrew.org > Adopt> Saved from Shelters> Dragonfruit to contribute to his medical care or
Venmo @newyorkbullycrew 🙏🏻
As you can see, Drago’s hind leg is a concern and evaluations have printed to amputation. We are exploring a second opinion. 🚨PLEASE DONATE🙏🏻 Medical evaluation- Radiographs prove multiple fractures in rear hind leg along with complete femural head break. Prognosis- amputation is suggested but we will get second opinion. Drago’s swollen face is not fluid filled so it’s probably from blunt force trauma. X-rays show clear lungs and he has not presented with mucus yet, so unsure about cough origin. We are scared to think it’s trachea damage as he presented ligature marks around his throat. Skin diagnosis is still inconclusive.
Drago is only 32lbs and is fairly young, about 1-2years old. This is so much trauma for this lovebug!
Please help us continue to help the dogs of NYC by contributing to his care.
It is heartbreaking to see the condition he is in and know that he has been in pain, alone and hungry for quite some time. He cannot bear weight in his rear leg, he is malnourished, has a golf ball size lump/abscess on his cheek, has a cough, has a patterned skin condition and HIS FRONT TEETH ARE BROKEN!
He is an absolute sweetheart.
We are thankful to have been able to pull Drago from Manhattan ACC and change the course of his destiny!

Where is that pain coming from and what the heck is causing it?
Phantom limb pain (PLP) is described as mild to extreme pain in an amputated limb. It was previously thought as a psychological response of patients who underwent amputation, but recent studies reveal scientific evidence of pain sensation that originates from the brain and spinal cord.

Even if the limb is no longer present, the nerve endings found at the amputation site still sends signals to the brain. The brain then interprets the signal as coming from the limb, as if it is still there.

Aside from the pain in the absent limb, many individuals report other symptoms such as cramping, tingling, and sensations of cold and heat in the amputated area. .

The Jaipur Foot, as it was known, was developed in India in 1970 by orthopedic surgeon Dr Pramod Karan Sethi and sculptor Ram Chandra. It was an appropriate, cheaper and aesthetic alternative to Western limb designs. It can be made in under an hour with basic household tools. The design has revolutionised the lives of thousands of amputees in the developing world.

Thanks to your generous support after our front window was vandalized, we had enough funds to replace the window and help out a special cat. Mouse was brought to @nycacc with front leg lameness and was most likely going to need an amputation. With the additional funding raised, we knew we could help this sweet girl out so we pulled her. Last week, she had her leg amputation and was up and running in no time! Mouse is a very friendly and chatty kitty, and a missing leg isn't going to stop her, she still walks around and jumps! She is about 1 year old. You can meet her at Meow Parlour and email [email protected] if you have any questions about the adoption process.

Update on NEMO: For those who saw, NEMO came into our Dominican clinic with a broken leg following a car accident some time ago. It was decided that a amputation was the best root for this boy to avoid infection due to his current circumstances and as well to prevent him from his leg from bothering him as he didn’t use it and was using all of his muscle to hold it up. The amputation went successfully and he was also fixed to avoid having to put him under again. The same day, NEMO was bouncing around many hours after surgery but seemed to be doing well. The next day we moved him to our local rescue @moringasmission in #Dominican where he will rest out the next little bit until he is healed and healthy enough for travel. Lucky for him, he was already quite the social pup so hopefully he will be ready for Canada soon enough. But for now, we know he is in good hands. Oh, and @geoveterinary who performed the surgery made sure to amputate in a way that allows him a great opportunity to get a prosthetic leg in the future if it’s something that would benefit his life for the better! We will post lots more about this dude in the coming weeks and follow his story throughout the process. We have been getting a lot of inquiries so wanted everyone to know he is doing well 💕 We will be looking for donations, a foster and also adopter in the future! Stay tuned!. Photo by @mewingcreative

Yesterday I dropped Jax off at the vet thinking I would pick him up and the tumor would be gone. He would’ve had a new but still difficult lease on life, but no tumor. Around 3 hours after dropping him off I got a call that his tumor could not be removed through a regular amputation at their facilities and a hemipelvectomy would be required from a specialist. Unfortunately a procedure like this is much more expensive than a normal amputation so we are seeking out any foundations or groups that help with situations like this. Either to help financially or to help spread his story so that we can raise the money ourselves— sadly this is the only thing holding us back from getting treatment for Jax.
Again he is only four years old and a procedure this intense is something Jax isn’t scared of at all. ////
Swipe for super gnarly pictures of Jax’s tumor shaved with incisions from his biopsy.

Broadly speaking, the vast majority of toe amputations are performed on patients with a diabetic foot.
A “dead” toe is one in which the blood supply is so completely impeded that infarction and necrosis develop. Infarction results in dry gangrene, with nonviable tissue becoming dry and black in color (because of the presence of iron sulfide, a product of the hemoglobin released by lysed erythrocytes).
This is most commonly seen as a complication of diabetes mellitus and is due to a combination of macrovascular and microvascular disease. Other major risk factors for peripheral vascular disease (as for all atherosclerotic diseases) include smoking, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.
Rarely, pathologic processes confined to the microvasculature are to blame, such as thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger disease), vasospastic diseases, and severe frostbite.
The method of toe amputation (disarticulation vs osteotomy) and the level of amputation (partial or whole phalanx vs whole digit vs ray) depend on numerous circumstances but are mainly determined by the extent of disease and the anatomy.

DRAGONFRUIT UPDATE🚨AMPUTATION NEEDED‼️Please donate aka DRAGO, had two expert medical evaluations- Radiographs prove multiple fractures in rear hind leg along with complete femural head break. Prognosis- amputation is suggested to ensure a pain free life after recovery.  There is so much damage, trying to repair is expected to only cause more pain from arthritis later in life and also runs the risk of surgical obstacles. This is a traumatic below-knee amputation of the right lower limb following a road traffic accident.
Unfortunately, these injuries remain common, particularly following explosions and motor vehicle accidents, and, in addition, many survivors require primary amputation for unsalvageable injuries or to save their life.
Notice that a thigh tourniquet was applied to control bleeding at the field before arriving to the emergency department for surgery.
Further exploration revealed that all major nerves and vessels supplying the foot had been severed. The decision was then made to proceed with a formal, below-knee surgical amputation.
The limb was then covered with a soft dressing, and the knee was held in full extension with a long leg splint that supported the distal end and secured the knee anteriorly and posteriorly.
It was then primarily closed following debridement of any residual necrotic tissue and foreign materials.
The quality of the soft tissue envelope of the residual limb is important, as this provides the comfort and durability needed for prosthetic tolerance and weight-bearing. A painful, non-healing, residual leg secondary to inadequate soft tissue cover will markedly worsen physical disability.

We got a smile out of JL!! This sweet boy really loves Jack Pirtle's Chicken and he is very connected to one of our volunteers that helped with his rescue.💜 Unfortunately, James is heartworm positive but has already started treatment to get rid of those pesky worms. The medication that is used for heartworm treatment is doing double-duty to help his hurt paw fight off infection.
Doc thinks that his paw was injured in the past, possibly more than a year ago. Since the paw is just causing James Lee pain, Doc has recommended amputation of the leg. Right now, James is dragging the paw when he walks and it is very painful for him. We are confident this is the right thing for James Lee but first we have to get rid of the heartworms. During that time, he will be eating right and gaining weight. Once he has completed treatment, he will have his neuter surgery and his amputation. Doc thinks that he will adjust well and will be able to live a long, healthy life as a tri-pawd.
We are so grateful to the staff of Grace Animal Hospital and to our volunteers and followers for sending positive thoughts to James Lee. He is already looking and feeling much better. And, if you would like to donate to his care we would be forever grateful. James is able to see Victoria and his puppies daily and we will update on them later this week.

APRIL: As promised in honor of limb loss awareness month I’ll be sharing stories & facts about limb loss: today, I’ll start w/ a lil reminder of how I became an awesome bionic babe. It was the spring of 2004 when I started feeling sharp pain in my pelvic area, after countless doctors visit & lots of pill poppin— 6 months later I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma ( bone cancer). Was going through chemo until one day I learned that I also had lung cancer. After several chemo treatment I had a hip replacement that was unsuccessful so eventually had to get my leg amputated the same year I graduated high school. My type of amputation is called hemipelvectomy and only 1% of amputees have it, most of whom decide to not use prosthetic limbs. (Which is why I think prosthetic companies don’t make products that cater to us) because my amputation is so high it makes it almost impossible to walk without crutches. A couple of challenges I face are severe back & knee pain, phantom pain and weird comments from strangers. Things that make me cool: my badass @alleles leg covers (I have 18), always finding ways to empower other amputee women, the fact that I only have to paint 5 toe nails and my obsession with having my leg match my outfit. #mamacax

Sensitivity is something I think a lot about — trying to expand my awareness or understanding or sensory interpretation. Learning and growing into a more sensitive, soft person. What I haven’t ever really faced before is actively desensitizing. There’s a word that I’ve been saying over and over again because it’s a trigger for me and I need it not to be now.
If you haven’t read my previous post about the health issues my mama is going through, she’s just had an above knee amputation as a result of blood clotting.
And amputation, that word has haunted me for the last few weeks. It just feels so gruesome and painful and final. It triggers some big feelings for me. So I’ve been sharing my mom’s story as much as I can to make that word hold a little less intensity for me.
Have you experienced this practice, of desensitizing ? 📷 @celiagalpinphotography

#school4all Grace (8 yo) is in second class on the Carmen Salles primary school, one of the institutions participating to the inclusive education project of Handicap International in Kinshasa, DRC. Grace had to be amputated because of an infection in her leg following an injection she received at birth. An infection developed where the doctor had made the injection. After her amputation, the little girl received a prosthesis but she does not get used and prefers to use her crutch. Above-the-knee leg amputation on a 57-year-old patient who had a 6 years history of diabetes which was complicated with atherosclerosis of the lower limb and eventually lead to an irreversible gangrene.
The leading indication for limb amputation is ischemic disease such as a peripheral vascular disease or PVD for short (a severe disease of the circulation such as an atherosclerotic process), primarily in elderly persons with diabetes mellitus, who often experience peripheral neuropathy that progresses to trophic ulcers and subsequent gangrene and osteomyelitis.
Limb removal for PVD is performed for uncontrollable soft-tissue or bone infection, nonreconstructable disease with persistent tissue loss, or unrelenting rest pain due to muscle ischemia.
Foot or leg ulcers may develop due to diabetes and not heal. They may become infected, and the infection may spread to the bone and become severe enough to be life threatening.
The surgical decision in that case is an above-knee amputation, which is performed when lower-level surgery is prohibited in order to remove the diseased tissue and prevent further spread of infection.
Although a diseased limb can be removed quite readily, resolving the problem of the extremity, the care does not end there. The surgery must be performed well to ensure that the patient is able to wear a prosthesis comfortably.

This was one of my favorite messages to receive from Heidi because it meant she was working on something ridiculously funny that would most likely make me laugh so hard I'd piddle and most definitely make me laugh so hard I'd cry. Through everything, Heidi's sense of humor remained strong. I know that right now she wants you and me... all of us... to shed tears, not out of sadness, but laughter. I hope you'll swipe to see some funnies courtesy of @heidiyogi herself.
1. It's all love
2. A typical ft session
3. Heidi, photo editor extraordinaire, offering to stand in for me and my tight hammies
4. Just a little edit, no big deal
5. Heidi demonstrating that her flexibility remained intact post amputation
6. Making the best of post amputation rehab
7. Things friends do when one of their sisters and another friend are about to get married
8. Advanced asana practice with an adjustment from Kona
9. Another gracious offer from Heidi to stand in for my tight hammies, but this time I got to be present - and find my zen - with my nose in her armpit
10. Our story may be done for this lifetime, but a story like ours... a story like yours... will never end. It is... Limitless. Infinite. Eternal.
I hear you telling me... us... "hold please ☝🏼️" and I'm holding. Wherever you are I know you're working on something epic that will make me laugh so hard tears will run down my legs and I will hold for as long as it takes to get to where you are. Rest in peace, my sister.

The bed has been lowered to the ground so she can easily cuddle at night and still get out of bed safely. She started a new diet and loves it! It's rather time consuming but well worth the effort. It is a combo of The Dog Cancer Diet by Dr. Dressler, DVM and dog osteosarcoma recipes from YouTube. The idea is to help the body's immune system fight the cancer. The last treatment option is carboplatin. Dogs tolerate chemo pretty well but it works best after an amputation. There's an interesting study about dogs with osteosarcoma. Those dogs that developed a post amputation infection had better outcomes and lived longer than those that didn't get a post op infection. Yeah, you read this right and you can read the study at this website www.ncbi.nlm.gov/pic/articles/PMC4556346/. It was published in 2015. Sometime in April, a new therapy will be available for dogs with osteosarcoma that uses their immune system to target and kill cancer cells. It's a listeria vaccine for dogs. I assume the original study of post op infected dogs led to this study with a bacterial vaccine but I haven't found the link verifying this yet. You can find this study by typing in listeria vaccine for osteosarcoma on the web. This could be an option for her if we keep her own immune system strong and the pain under control. If the study requires an amputation, she will not be a candidate. Last summer she tore her right hind leg CCL. It was an acute injury which occurred when she got the zoomies. We decided against surgery because she still places weight on the leg, it was a 50:50 success rate, the amount of time she would be down, and her age. We have been controlling the pain with rest, shorter and infrequent walks, lots of car rides, CBD oil, and NSAIDs as needed. So even if we wanted to change our mind about the amputation that we so long ago decided was not an option, it is not a viable option today. What is viable today is that she is with her humans, comfortable, eating, enjoying a lot of car rides, and still has a curly tail. If you are still reading this, thank you. Many blessings to you and your canine friend(s)! #irishwoldhoundosteosarcoma

Traumatic amputation of the right upper limb at the shoulder level!! ‘Traumatic amputation’ refers to the way in which the amputation has occurred i.e. it is a sudden, violent and unexpected event that causes the loss of a person’s limbs.
Upper extremity amputations are most frequently indicated by severe traumatic injuries.
They can be as distal as the fingertip and as proximal as including the shoulder.
A surgical amputation can be necessary after a person has suffered from a traumatic injury, and they can be carried out as part of the immediate emergency treatment to save the person’s life or because their bones, tissues, or both, have been so badly damaged that they cannot later be reconstructed. However, surgical amputation is usually considered to be a last resort, and if it is believed that a limb can be saved, surgeons will first try to do so.
In extreme cases like the one presented above, the surgical goals include removing the damaged or diseased limb, minimizing long-term complications, and preparing a limb stump that can be fitted for a prosthetic.
Following surgery begins the long rehabilitation process in which the most comfortable and functional prosthetic is determined for the individual.

A good cause to donate to, some sweet shirts to wear! I illustrated the likeness of my roommates' dog, Elinor, for these fundraiser shirts! Elinor was a rescue that was found with her back legs in not-so-great condition. Buying one of these shirts will donate directly to the fund to help Elinor get her non-working rear leg amputated so that she can start tripod walking for real! All profits made will go directly to her care and anything not spent on her will be donated to Sweet Paws Rescue.

Checking if it’s mani/pedi time. Also checking for sore hocks, as Maple gets a small one every time she molts.
.
Rabbits are very prone to sore hocks, which can lead to leg amputation if they get infected. The best thing to do is to try and prevent them by providing your bunny with soft flooring and grip. NEVER leave your rabbit to stand/sit on wire or plastic. Cover their areas in inexpensive rugs or towels. Ensure optimal weight and trim their nails regularly. If you see the formation of a sore hock (basically a small spot will lose fur and start getting red), re-evaluate your rabbit’s living conditions and general well-being. If you are doing everything right and your rabbit still gets sore hocks, observe them carefully and go to the vet if they get bloody or look inflamed. ATTENTION! Since rabbits don’t have “meat pads” on their feet, any wound there can quickly get infected and that infection will spread to the bone. Once in the bone, treatment is very difficult, often impossible and might require amputation of the limb or can even cost your bunny’s life.

Dr. Walker first volunteered as an unpaid field surgeon when the war began, where she was denied even being a volunteer as "women are nurses, not surgeons." she was denied employment as a Union spy (!) and finally became the first female surgeon employed by the US Army after they got over themselves. Dr. Walker frequently crossed enemy lines to treat wounded civilians. she was captured by Confederate troops just after assisting a Confederate doctor perform an amputation (!!), arrested as a spy, and held as a prisoner of war for four months.
.
after the Civil War ended Dr. Walker became a writer and lecturer. she supported issues of health care, suffrage, and women's rights, including the right to shed a hundred uncomfortable petticoats and wear a sensible pair of pants instead. infamous for wearing men's clothing, she was frequently assaulted for it and even arrested several times. she responded to criticism with, "I don't wear men's clothes. I wear *my* clothes." 💪🏻
.
Dr. Walker was awarded a Medal of Honor for her war efforts — STILL the only woman to this day to be a recipient. over 50 years later the US government changed recipient criteria and withdrew her medal. Mary refused to return it and wore her medal every day until her death. history books have officially declared this the power move of all power moves. 🔥 and by “history books” I mean “Laura’s Instagram.” I think I love you, Dr. Walker. thank you for your service — feels like putting your portrait on a stamp is the least we can do. 💌

Terry Fox Run event is held in memory of the late Terry Fox to keep his dream of a Cancer-Free World Alive.
.
In 1977, Terry Fox was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer which led to the amputation of his right leg above the knee. He was so overwhelmed by the suffering of other cancer patients of which, the majority are young children that he decided to raise funds for Cancer Research by running across Canada.  He named his cross-country initiative as “The Marathon of Hope”.Despite his conditions, he continued to run every day for a total of 143 days, over 42KM everyday across Canada. He was forced to stop running when the cancer had spread to his lungs.  Terry passed away at the age of 22. Although the Heroic Canadian had left us, his legacy and dream lives on as an inspiration to all who share the same dream of having a Cancer-Free World Alive.
.
Al-fatihah to my beloved Ayah who also struggled for his cancer and passed away in 2011. ❤

She is about 1 year old and she's looking for a forever home. You can now meet her at Meow Parlour and email [email protected] if you have any questions about the adoption process.

it’s time to share a little BTS of all the ‘essential oil-talk’ that’s been happening around here.
.
but first… quick…
if you’ve been thinking about joining me on this journey…
i have a special gift for ONE special someone TODAY….
the first lovely to open a new doTERRA account with me…gets this gorgeous marble-look diffuser….(from me to you). a little incentive to take the leap….
cause truly… if i could…..I’d send oils to you all.
.
(message me with your oil questions. i am here.)
.
now the story of ….
‘what-the-what is with these oils?’
.
if you’ve been around for a bit… you know we’ve been on a cancer journey since 2013.
my husband was first diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2013…chemo, radiation, a stem-cell transplant…
8 months later…we were home…
cancer free.
2 1/2 years ….recovery…then he was back to work.
a year later… he developed GVHD…(a risk of stem cell transplants.)
this developed into ulcers on his leg…that grew out of control… the only alternative was amputation.
.
since 2013….. we’ve been doing a lot of ‘reacting’….
we didn’t have a lot of options…
when you’re told… it’s life or death… you do what you are told to do.
.
.
but oh my word… the amputation… that was a tough one.
it was then I declared….
once we are out of the woods….
we must try everything we can to BE well in this world.
(emotionally, physically, spiritually)
.
i’ve been on a seeking/growing journey for-like-ever…
but this last year…
pushed me to a whole new level.
and that’s when the oils found me.
these oils ground me…calm me….empower me… .
for john…. his work…you might think is mostly physical….
but truly…
it’s so much more about his mindset…
.
these oils…
boost his immunity, cheer him up and boost him on.
.

and so….after seeing multiple shifts, changes and some pretty crazy amazing results…
I’ve gone ALL IN.
I’m on a mission…to share our story….and invite anyone searching for a more proactive/pure/healthy life…to join me.
.
.
im still here…making photos… creating classes….
but…this to me…
aligns perfectly…with this one FULL and BEAUTIFUL creative life….
first photography, then writing…. now sharing the power of these oils…
(Continued in the comments.)

I realized today I didn't celebrate ( and honestly) kinda forgot my "being-alive day" or my "ampuversary" on the 15th March. This is my 5th being alive day. 🎂🎈 And what a yourney it has been so far! Not an easy one but sure as hell an adventure with a loads of "unexpectedness".. A friend said that maybe it is a good thing that I am forgetting? I thought about that.
IT should not be forgotten but celebrated! Your "be alive day/ ampuversary should not be a memorial service about what you have lost but a celebration of the rest of you and being alive!

Celebrating all the beautiful and unexpected luck, unexpected happiness, unexpected new friends, unexpected challenges, unexpected love, unexpected inner self acceptance and the amazing people I have met so far and the amazing people who has been part of my life.

People do not get amputated for a cool new accessory or a party trick. (even thou it is!) 😉 Amputation is last resort, it is when you come to a decision to live, to be more mobile, to save the rest of you. TO BE ALIVE and actively be part of your life.
This year I was blessed and humbled by getting the amazing oppertunity of being part of the Össur family. The Company that has been part of my life after Amputation and made many unexpected possibilities possible with technology. New challenges set. New goals to meet.
This year I feel more positive and more comfortable. They never said this was going to be easy but it does get better.
Lucky to have Jaco Deist as my orthotists who has his work cut out for him. 😉
Starting new socket and leg Thursday. Then some more dancing!! Again.. Thank you my dearly LOVED and appreciated people/ friends/family/earthly angels for holding my hand in your own unique way in my life.

Be open and see the "unexpectedness" in your own life. It is there and it is beautiful.

Always lots of love.

Part of me is sorry for such a graphic image but the other isn't. This picture portrays one of the many obstacles my Buttercup has overcame. From being hit by a brush hog and having a skin rotation over his back left knee and loosing two toes (back right) to later on finding out he had a cancer of the skin tissue that lead to the amputation of the back left leg. He's truly a fighter. I'm so proud to have such a loving and healthy cat who is back to running and playing like normal. Since his amputation he follows me EVERYWHERE, but of course I don't mind. Thank you to the big man upstairs for giving me more time with my sweet baby. I know I'm definitely an obsessive cat mom but, how could you not have such a big heart for such an amazing and strong cat?? I mean come on we practically grew up together. Regardless of what people might say, I love you to the moon and back Buttercup.

During my surgery rotation, each intern was assigned a topic to deliver a 30 min lecture on. I was given ‘Necrotizing Fasciitis;’ flesh eating bacteria. It was interesting researching this very rare infection, less than 20,000 cases/yr. Few weeks later, I presented my research w/ a PowerPoint slide show & 30 min of Chitter Chatter on everything under the sun regarding NF. The surgical attendings were pleased, & I was off to my next rotation,
the intensive care unit.
〰️〰️〰️
ICU was extremely challenging; central lines, intubations, codes, precise monitoring of meds, EKGs, IVs, chart keeping; juggling the demands of 10 different specialists w/ varying treatment views for each patient. Catching a couple hrs of sleep during 36 hr on call shifts felt like a luxury.
〰️〰️〰️
One morning I came in to see an unexpected diagnosis on my patient list. A 33 yr old female was presenting w/ Necrotizing Fasciitis in her lower extremity. I couldn’t believe it. I went to introduce myself as her ICU intern, & performed a physical exam; there’s no words to describe what her leg looked & smelled like. It was an advanced case, face to face with recent research, that was now in human form. A single mom, young boy, w/ parents by her side, gut wrenching reality.
〰️〰️〰️
The infection was spreading aggressively, consults were flying in. Surgery was prepping for a potential amputation, infectious disease was ordering every antibiotic known to man. She was scared, her parents were in shock, I heard them praying for her leg to be saved.
The tone of the specialists grew heavier in the coming days, as they explained the infection had started deep in her tissues & spread into her bloodstream; septic shock was threatening, her prognosis was grim, even with an amputation...
〰️〰️〰️
I thought of this experience during my morning walk, I’m not sure why. I don’t reflect often on my medical days, though the memories remain vivid. Although I left the System, I hold dear those years of my life; they are an integral piece of my evolving mosaic.
〰️〰️〰️
Somewhere, her parents are raising her boy...& I just want to take a moment to say, ‘these first blooms of spring, are for you.’

Did you know amputations were the most common major operation performed during the Civil War?
.
Military advances before and during the Civil War created more powerful weapons that caused more devastating injuries, including shattered bones. One such example of a weapon that caused tremendous damage were Minié balls
.
These conical bullets cut a straight path and usually went all the way through the injured part; the ball seldom remained lodged in the body. If a Minié ball struck a bone, it usually caused the bone to shatter. The damage to bones and resulting compound fractures were often severe enough to necessitate amputation. The entire point of the minie ball was to damage the bones. A hit on a major blood vessel could also have serious and often lethal consequences
.
This image is the painting Hospital Gangrene of an Arm Stump by Edward Staunch in 1863. It depicts Private Milton E. Wallen of Company C, 1st Kentucky Cavalry who was wounded by a Minié ball while in prison at Richmond, July 4, 1863. The second image shows Minié balls

As we get ready to welcome another dog who requires double amputation, I can't help but think of how far Cora has come. In the beginning she has two badly broken legs and a bone infection. The double amputation was hard on her because her pelvis was also broken, making it very hard for her to wiggle and manipulate as she needs. She began her life with us very unsure and damages, what she has developed into is the opposite. She has become a staple in our home; she's a leader, a lover-dog and the primary protector of our daughter, next to my wife and I, obviously. We love this dog for who she has become and what she has taught us along the way. I'm excited to meet this new dog and help him reach the point Cora has.

Several portraits by this as-yet-unidentified artist are known, all painted in a precise manner on small wood panels. The young physician portrayed in this example holds a Tenon-type amputation saw. Although some Americans could afford to study surgery abroad, the vast majority of local physicians also practiced surgery without the benefit of foreign study in major medical centers. In the period before anesthesia, surgery was an ordeal whose most important element was speed. In 1792, a young man in Mansfield, Connecticut, wrote, “Yesterday I attended upon the amputation of a thigh which opperation was performed by the famous Doct. Tudor and I will say sir between you and I had you been present I believe your bowels would have yearn’d through anxiety & pitty for the opperation was protracted to the unreasonable length of forty minutes or more.” To relieve the pain and anxiety of waking surgery, practitioners tried mesmerism and other experimental techniques, but it was not until the mid-nineteenth century that inhalation anesthesia was devised.

And then as if it couldn't get any worse, the doctors told me amputation was pretty much mandatory if I wanted her to have any chance of living beyond 4-6 months. I truly couldn't imagine how we would move forward bc all I could think about was my beautiful best friend was about to be mutilated, destroyed and crippled. I even thought for a while, why even amputate and go through chemo, If she's never going to be able to walk, let alone run or hike again? Should I just put her down to prevent her from having a miserable life?

I know that might seem extreme to some, but to say Nadia is my shadow is an understatement. On average we were running 3-5 miles 3-4 times a week, with 8-16 mile hikes about every other weekend. She is the #1 reason I started getting healthy again and I simply couldn't imagine her life without all 4 legs.

However, the vets, my parents and amazing little sister @sabrinamichellexo kept telling me to not lose hope, and that our lives as we knew it, were not over. Sabrina kept saying Trevor, she WILL be able to walk and run again, you're hiking partner is not dead.

And sure enough, they were all right 😁. As you can see in the 2nd video (taken day 28 after amputation), Nadia is already back to sprinting. While shes not back to 100% just yet, she's getting stronger and faster day by day. And the fact that she has a little sister to help encourage her to get up and keep going, is speeding up the recovery that much more.

However, the #ProudDadMoment isn't just for Nadia. The little troublemaking pipsqueak Arya, who could barely walk without tripping over her own feet in the 3rd video, is now almost fully capable of keeping up on runs, at just 12 weeks.
So yea, stay tuned guys, bc the epic hikes and pictures will be coming back within the near future 💪🏕🌄🌲 #Husky #WhiteHusky #Sisters #CancerSurvivor #NadiaTheTripawd #Tripawd #AryaTheHuskyJindo #LosAngeles #WattlesMansion #RunyonCanyon #Hollywood #California #CharmleeWildernessPark #malibu

In 2014, Jim Ewing fell 50 feet while climbing in the Cayman Islands. His injuries, which included multiple broken bones and nerve damage that caused extreme chronic pain, eventually led to the amputation of his lower left leg.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hugh Herr, who knew Jim through the New England climbing community, leads the Center for Extreme Bionics at the MIT Media Lab and the Lab’s Biomechatronics group. He introduced Jim to Dr. Matthew Carty, a visiting scientist at the Lab and staff surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital. Dr. Carty performed the surgery using a new procedure developed at the Center for Extreme Bionics at the MIT Media Lab and first performed on a human patient (Jim Ewing) at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston. The amputation was part of a new neural interface and communication paradigm known as the agonist-antagonist myoneural interface (AMI)—an expression of a NeuroEmbodied Design paradigm.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In 2018, Jim returned to the Cayman Islands with Hugh to climb the same cliffs he fell from three years earlier, wearing a bionic prosthesis that communicates directly with his nervous system.

Being an amputee I asked myself one question about all the differences in my life before amputation and my life after.. My amputation was a defining moment in my life. Many different things comes to mind. What is peace to me now and what was it before. What I felt love was before and after. The need to be loved before and after, the love I felt for myself before and after. My love for my life before and after. What my dreams was and what they are now. It is like two different people. I think most things intensives and a lot of things just doesn't seem important anymore. I am a lot kinder to myself and sometimes a bit harder to push harder. Find a balance that YOU want and that you feel comfortable with. Use the defining moment to make miracles, change in a better way, don't waste time on people, situations that Doesn't make you feel loved and doesn't bring you peace. You have been through enough. Be kind to yourself and let that be your first love.
Twinkle twinkle little Star how brave and wonderful you are.
Love

4 weeks ago little Chloe M forced open a window (suspect in pursuit of a bird) & fell 5 floors to concrete. The time between that & getting her to hospital was very traumatic for her & for me & I really can't talk about that bit tbh.
The bad news: broken everywhere. Compound fractures on her hind left leg. 3 broken fingers in her front 🐾 . Fractured jaw. Fractured pelvis.
I think my heart splintered as many times. Amputation or even gulp, goodbye, were both possible. But after 4 hrs orthopedic surgery she came out intact but very battered & distressed.
4 days later I was able to bring her home for her very long & slow recovery.
Just when I thought I knew her fiery & haughty little personality intimately, I discovered a whole different side to her & oddly to myself.
Her bravery & willingness to submit while I had to perform the most basic of tasks for her - washing her, helping her to toilet, syringing her water because she couldn't drink herself, holding meals in tiny bowls to her sore little mouth, & then the medications: antibiotics, lactulose, metacan, gabopentin (I can administer them all) was quite beautiful.
What surprised me was how much she let me do for her even though her pride must have been horrified at the indignity.
The first 2 weeks were the hardest. Many a night I think we cried together when she refused to eat & I worried she might be slipping into depression with her bandaged leg, shaved tail, wrecked little paw & the horrendous pain she was in. Multiple meds 3 x a day on an empty stomach were making her nauseous.
Finally after 4 days she began to eat, shreds of her favourite - fresh 🦐 - from my fingers.
I cried with happiness & again when she was able to get into a tray for the first time on her own. Weirdly, for a clean freak, none of the intensive care she needed repulsed me, in fact quite the opposite as I rejoiced when she was able to do things on her own.
She is far from out of the woods. X-rays on Sept 21 to determine if she needs more surgery but so far recovering better than expected. 🙏🏽😿🤞🏽
