Ironically enough it wasn’t really my newborn keeping me up but instead anxiety, specifically around sleep. I was limping through but realized something needed to change Sunday after waking up at 2am and staying awake! So I’m committing to changing a few things and sharing to keep myself accountable.
Here’s the plan:

1. Yoga every day! I’ve been walking almost daily but realized it’s time to incorporate yoga back into my regular routine. I’m only a month postpartum so it will remain gentle but today I did a postnatal class online then 30 extra min of stretching on my own, it felt wonderful (also thanks Leo for sleeping like a champ in your crib). 2. Meditate daily. We’ve already established a bedtime routine with Leo, so I decided during his bed time feed I will do a guided meditation focused on sleep and relaxation for myself.
3. Breath work. Last night during each wake up to feed I did at least 2 min of guided breath work with my Apple Watch. This was so easy and just kept me calm and relaxed while I was feeding him.
4. No checking my sleep tracker during the night!!! When my sleep was bad this became an obsession and didn’t help at all. So it’s off limits until morning going forward.
5. Protect my afternoon naps. I was really good at this the first few weeks then got lazy and started skipping my naps. No more!! Even if I’ve slept well I’m still going to lie down for a nap.

I love napping, I nap everyday, for probably a little longer then prescribed but eeeep maybe I should try and tidy that up.
Avoiding #stimulants such as caffeine for a few hours before bedtime. Im going to say avoid drinking liquids all together within 1.5-2hrs of getting ready for sleep. Be careful with consumption of green tea, especially if you are sensitive to caffeine.

I also like to take a warm shower before bed which really helps my body relax. I’ll then read a few pages of which ever book Im flicking through followed by a couple of light stretches.
Mattress and pillows should be comfortable, so invest in NEW BEDDING IF YOU HAVENT ALREADY. The bedroom should be nice and cool, so if you need to have a soft fan blowing whilst living under 200 blankets in the winter time - do that. haha I say this from a place of experience.

Sometimes he just needed a couple minutes of snuggles and then he would lay in his bed. But there have been many times we’ve had to listen to him cry and fuss for naps and bedtime. It’s not my favorite, but I also could hear the change in his cries. And if things escalated, we went in. He’s so tries to go from three naps to one. That was not happening. Somehow he wasn’t realizing he could just drop one nap. So, today Momma desperately needed a few minutes. I grabbed a few of his toys and made his crib more fun. Do I spend $150? Do I spend $5? Do I spend $60? Is more expensive better? Maybe it’s not! I found this pillow (along with its twin) at @tjmaxx for only $16.99 for BOTH 🙌🏼 I’ve been using them for about a month now (which is why this post has been a long time coming, I wanted to make sure it was something I could really recommend) and I do, highly recommend it!

I LOVE this pillow it’s kept its fluff, is not too fluffy, not too dead/soft and ALSO has the #essenceofcopper which is an essential mineral amazing for our hormones and overall healthy function.

it won’t be long before our nap time dance slows and becomes less frequent and moments like this one will be but a memory. it will be something that we did rather than something that we’re doing, and that simple fact alone makes me teary. they are only so small and then you blink. ~~ people often ... it won’t be long before our nap time dance slows and becomes less frequent and moments like this one will be but a memory. it will be something that we did rather than something that we’re doing, and that simple fact alone makes me teary. they are only so small and then you blink. ~~ people often ask if i rock/hold her until she falls asleep—something i document often in stories—and the answer is yes. yes i do. and if it’s not me, it’s her dad or her nana. we’ve done it this way with all three girls. call us crazy. or weak or tell us that we’re not teaching them a basic skill. we’ve heard it all. we may have even questioned each other along the way, but are always brought right back to them being the ones guiding us along. this way works for us. it’s slows us down, allowing us to breathe in everything that is little. sleep training wasn’t ever our thing. in fact, i felt envious from time to time of the parents/caregivers out there that have successfully completed those programs because we failed so miserably. but that’s okay. “it’s going to be okay”, i’d say as i rocked them to sleep praying i wasn’t cuddling them too much and screwing sleep up for them to the point that they could never do it alone. some days she needs me and some days she doesn’t and some days we skip naps all together and ride the wave until bedtime. as for my older two, they snuggle up with their special blankets and fall asleep at night telling stories while listening to their bedtime music. or sometimes we hop into one big bed until everyone falls into a sleepy slumber before carrying them to their beds. one by one. it’s a beautiful mess (and crazy at times) perfectly imperfect dance, but it’s ours. and it’s what works for us. ~~
so to any new parents out there… i say, do what works and what fits your family. it all falls into place eventually. or as motherhood has shown me, in a blink!

Nutrition plays a role in how well you sleep. Food relates directly to serotonin, a key hormone that — along with Vitamin B6, B12, & folic acid — helps promote healthy sleep. Try to consume foods that calm the body, increase serotonin levels & get you ready for restful sleep. These include complex carbohydrates such as whole grain breads & pasta; lean proteins such as chicken or turkey; heart-healthy fats such as walnuts, cashews & pistachios; & beverages such as warm milks or chamomile tea.
If you like to take a nap every day, try limiting them to 10 or 15 minutes. That makes it easier to hit the ground running when you wake up. Napping too long or too often can have a negative effect on sleep patterns & cause sleep inertia, which is the feeling of grogginess or disorientation we experience after waking from a deep sleep.
Working non-traditional shifts interferes with your body’s internal clock & can result in sleep trouble. Attack the problem by following a regular bedtime routine & making your environment conducive to sleep by keeping your bedroom dark, cool & quiet. Go to bed immediately after work & let people know what hours you work & when you will be sleeping, so they know when to leave you alone.

That nightcap before bed may help you fall asleep easily. But it can end up robbing youof a good night’s rest. As the alcohol is metabolized during the second half of the night, it creates more fragmented sleep. This can mean vivid dreams, sleepwalking, nightmares & even breathing problems because alcohol relaxes your muscles. It’s best to limit drinks in the late evening or eliminate them entirely.

My room is pretty fabulous too. ‍♀️ I love taking long naps, and fall asleep on my own after Mom has given me a bath ... Hi 👋 My name is Jasmine and I’m a little over 5 months old. With a full time job, a business and a baby : I knew there had to be a better way. This is how her daily routine looks like:

9:30am - WAKE UP
11:15am - feed on boob
11:30am-1pm - nap
2:30pm - feed on boob
3-5pm - nap
6:15pm - bottle-feed 120ml expressed milk
7-8:30pm - nap
8:30-9pm bath
9pm - bottle-feed 150ml expressed breastmilk
9:30-9:45pm - GOODNIGHT

Note: you should alter the wake-up & bedtimes to your lifestyle, my partner works late, so this later bedtime gives him a chance to kiss our girl goodnight. The feeding & awake intervals should still be followed. ————————————————————————
It’s been 3 weeks since we sleep trained Keia and we can successfully say that she sleeps 7-8 hours every night (hooray!! Her record is 8.5 hours so far) before she wakes up for a night-feed and goes back to sleep till 8+/9:30am and she calls for another feed. We decided not to wean her off night feeds yet as she’s only turning 5 months next weekend and feel that it’s only better to wean her off night feeds when she successfully starts on solids which is when she is around 6 months.
I still do need to wake up 5 hours after going to bed to pump my milk, but this uninterrupted 7-8 hours really helps my partner & I have some time to ourselves at night, and a better sleep for him as well.
In addition, having a fixed schedule for Keia really helps me with caring for Keia on my own entirely - our Mothers have returned back to Singapore & I’ve been flying solo without help for a week so far, taking care of our 2 fur-kids and Keia. 🙆🏻‍♀️. Lastly, the book that I took reference to is called The Sleep Sense Program by Dana Obleman @sleepsense. Loads of people have been PMing me about the book we read. No loyalties for me in promoting this book but just a parent sharing with other parents to help gain back your sanity!

So we had to find a new bedtime/nap time routine. It was surprisingly much easier than we thought. Paul now asks Jag “Do you want to go to sleep?” Or “Bedtime Jag?” Or “Time for a Nap Jag?” And Jag will run to his bedroom and wait for Paul to pick him up and rock him in the rocking chair until he’s asleep. It’s beautiful. It’s magical and it frees up so much of our evening now that he’s not putting up a fight to go to bed.

When you’re short on sleep, you’re more likely to injure yourself, get sick, and forget things. And it doesn’t exactly make you pleasant company either.

COMMON REASON WHY YOU MAY SUCK AT SLEEPING: 🔸YOU POUND COFFEE (AND BOOZE!)
Turning to caffeine when you need a boost can be tempting, but it’s also counterproductive: The wake-promoting effects disappear after just three days of sleep deprivation.
Restrict caffeine consumption to early in the day—drinking coffee as much as six hours before bed can still affect sleep quality, research has shown.

Try this: Go outside. Exposure to sunlight can help suppress sleep-promoting hormones, waking you up
Or try this: Keep some coffee beans on you and take a whiff whenever you need a pick-me-up—the aroma alone may help perk you up and won’t interfere with your sleep the way drinking coffee would. 🔸YOU WORK CRAZY HOURS:
TAKE NAPS
Try to find a quiet place without a lot of ambient noise-even if that means your car. Use A sleep mask and earplugs.
Nap for 20 minutes. Any longer and you risk waking up in the middle of the deep-sleep phase of your sleep cycle, making you groggy.
Try napping at the same time each day—you’ll train your body to expect it. Make it a recurring event on your calendar. 🔸YOURE AFRAID TO UNPLUG
Put the phone away 1hr before bed but pick it up first thing in the morning. The blue light will help rouse you, jumpstarting your internal clock so you’ll sleep better the following night. If you have emails etc to type up, do that in the morning too. 🔸YOU THINK YOU’RE SUPERHUMAN
Bottom line: If you feel tired throughout the day, it’s a good sign you may need more or better-quality sleep.
Prioritize sleep. Establish a bedtime routine-take a hot shower, have a snack, dynamic stretching, have sex. Anything to signal to your brain that it’s time for sleep. If all else fails, take a low dose of melatonin.
