Hearing Edna Chavez of South Central LA saying she learned to duck from gunshots before she learned how to read got to me.
If you live in any hood you know about gang life. Your hometown, your neighbor”HOOD” is actually just a place where gang members are literally born and raised. You’re aware of who those people are. You might even be friends with some of them because you grew up with them and see the good side of their hearts. I grew up with so many friends and neighbors who were involved. We all knew who they were, we knew their parents, brothers and sisters— We knew who they were affiliated with, what they sold, what they did and we went on with our lives. This still happens. We were raised thinking it IS NORMAL.
We were brought up in reverse. We’re blessed to revert out of that life and see how it should be, but so many of us aren’t and the cycle continues. I remember doing my eyeliner on prom day in my room, excited, listening to music... (The picture above is that day in my room) and than “KA-KA-KA-KAA—KAAAA” followed by tires screeching around the corner of my block. It startled me and I poked my eye. Turns out, my neighbor, Mrs. Dodd had a grandson who was visiting from college. He was shot dead on her front yard from a drive by. I knew it was gunshots right away. Remembering that day, of course I was shocked but I shrugged it off, and kept getting ready for my prom! What a monster!! I didn’t even cry. I still went to prom with a red eye from the eyeliner poke. Can you believe, I still had the audacity to smile and be happy, dance the night away and have fun with my friends as if nothing traumatic even happened on the block that I lived. Man, that’s sad. I’m glad God allowed me to remember that memory, even if it is as ugly as it was.

A kid doesn’t get to choose where they live, or where they are raised. We all grow up wishing the absolute best for our kids. We all want more for our children than what we had. I know that’s always been the case for my family. Some may wonder, “Why would you raise a family in an unsafe neighborhood?” Running out of space, swipe thru to read more

Today @michelleobama has been sharing some more photos and memories from her upcoming memoir, #Becoming.
. . .
This is me at Princeton in the early 1980s. I know that being a first-generation college student can be scary, because it was scary for me. I was black and from a working-class neighborhood in Chicago, while Princeton’s student body was generally white and well-to-do. I’d never stood out in a crowd or a classroom because of the color of my skin before. But I found close friends and a mentor who gave me the confidence to be myself. Going to college is hard work, but every day I meet people whose lives have been profoundly changed by education, just as mine was. My advice to students is to be brave and stay with it. Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

You can’t tell it from this photo, but Barack woke up on our wedding day in October, 1992 with a nasty head cold. Somehow, by the time I met him at the altar, it had miraculously disappeared and we ended up dancing almost all night. Twenty five years later, we’re still having fun, while also doing the hard work to build our partnership and support each other as individuals. I can’t imagine going on this wild ride with anybody else.

#
While I know it's supposed to be funny and tongue in cheek I think that at some point in my life I thought this was true. And from the outside... this looks like my life.
#
So let me break this down into some real world shizz, shall I?
#
Went to college and racked up a significant amount of student loans that seemed to take forever to pay off. Living in California most of my money went to paying rent and student loans when I graduated. And going out money. It sucked. Being broke sucks. Awesome. And while I value education and getting a degree I don't use my degree in International Relations for shizzz. But I will make my children go through that same hell.
#
Dropping my kids off at practice in my Range Rover.. sounds like a fun afternoon off but you're racing around town trying to drop one off while figuring out how to pick the other up from THIER practice. And some days, one's practice is at the same exact time as your other kids game. So who do you pick? Which kid do you like most? I dunno... I then proceed to text three friends to see if they can help. Oh yeah. Shi*^%, their game goes until 6 and they still have to go home and do homework, bathe and I need to make dinner. Crap.
#
Oh, and how the hell are ALL SUVs so expensive? Not even a Range Rover but a mid-level SUV still isn't cheap. Have fun with that Range Rover payment.
#
And great, most of the classes I like to take don't have on-site daycare. So I have a small window of kid-free time in the morning I get to work out. But oh wait. I have work too. I get to pick whether I get work done or work out. That's a fun choice to make every day.
#
So sometimes I hit up hot yoga at 5 when Brad gets home from work (IF he's home yet) and thank God it's 90 minutes because who wants to be home around that time... remember games, bathing, homework etc.?
#
And crap! I forgot... I told my friends I'd meet them for girls night but I am EXHAUSTED. Will they be mad if I bail? Do THEY even want to anymore? Probably not.
#
Ok, that's my dose of real life meme. I’m off to hot yoga! ✌🏼

In the spirit of never say never, I present Sawyer and Ozzy, 8 and 2, both well-mannered Labradors of different colors who get along just fine and always have.

Enough time has passed since we made this photograph that I am reminded of what a jerk I can I be.
For the record, in the years 1980 - 1984, it was very wrong of me to make fun of my classmates who toiled in various studio lighting classes at our college.

I never took any of these courses, Sawyer and Ozzy, who certainly deserved better, certainly wished I had and you can see the disappointment on their faces.

As a young photographer, the studio was the one place on campus you would never find me.

The class assignment that drove my colleagues to tears was something about a dark object and a light object in the same picture. This was made exponentially more difficult back in the day because they used film, old-school lighting equipment and medium-format cameras.

Again, I want to take this time to apologize for my lack of empathy and short sightedness.
I will admit that I rarely agree to include more than one of anything in a photograph, yet my wife and faithful assistant Callie often reminds that in business the customer is always right and so here we are.

I wish I had some valuable piece of wisdom to share here, some Spartan of judgment but the truth is I’m just damn lucky, lucky that we made this photograph and lucky that my friends from college are still speaking to me, as well as Sawyer, Ozzy and Callie.

Have a great day and keep dry, I’ll be in the studio if you are looking for me.

I can’t believe it’s been 13 years on this day since proudly walking across that stage finishing my undergrad at MSU Eli Broad College of Business. To be able to have my grandmother I was so close to there to see me graduate before passing meant so much to me, as well as my family that could make it. The memories running wild in the streets of East Lansing with so many influential people and some of my closest friends to this day will last a lifetime!! Forever a Spartan! 💚💚

Looking back I had no idea what was in store for me. At this point last year, I was dreaming about the great big adult world I was about to be a part of.
But this year has been one of the toughest of my whole life. No one can really adequately prepare you for what your first year out of college feels like. You’re expecting greatness, adult responsibilities, your own place to call home, no more being dependent on anyone else, entering into the job world and being a badass. That's what I was expecting anyhow.
Instead, I got slapped in the face very hard with a good dose of reality. Living off campus was fun for about 5 minutes until I realized none of my friends were around anymore. We’d all dispersed and gone our separate ways due to job availability. I moved to a big city where I knew NO ONE except for my fiance and my dog. I started a brand new job the week after college in this big new city and immediately felt like I didn’t have any clue what I was doing or how to be an adult. That feeling has yet to go away, and honestly I’m not sure if it ever will. I felt completely lost.

Suddenly real life responsibilities were knocking at my door. I felt so unprepared for adulthood. I found myself having almost no time to do the things I enjoyed. I just worked all day, came home, ate dinner and repeat. This certainly wasn’t the bright and shiny world I was expecting.
A year ago, I was a different person. My family even remarks on how much I’ve changed this year. At this time last year, I didn’t have this yoga account, in fact I wasn’t even consistently practicing at this point yet. I didn’t understand how to manage my stress, and what I thought I wanted to do with my life then has drastically shifted since.
I have changed and I have grown more this year than I’ve ever seen myself grow. I am starting to find myself, and trust that what I want is real, and okay and validated, even if it’s scary because it’s not what i had planned.

I’m so thankful for my yoga practice that continues to help me discover myself, and for Cory who is a little older than me and has gently guided me through this year of incredible change. ❤️

Happy 18th birthday to my two best friends!
Jack, you're the chillest guy and you are genuinely the nicest dude i know. You're also one of the funniest people whether you said something funny or spelled something wrong you're always making me laugh. You're the best dive partner I could ask for and it's crazy to think it's been 4 years of us diving together. It's insane that 4 years ago we were struggling to hit 30ft and now we're at 80ft. I can always count on you to push me to dive deeper and harder and spear bigger fish, While also I never fail to get a laugh out of scaring you with a horn shark while your underwater. I'm so stoked to surf with you more this year, as well as dive deeper, spear bigger fish, grab some big bugs, protect you from eels and send it on some waves :)
Tony, it's been 15 years since we met In preschool and it's crazy to say we're still so close. When we met in preschool you were the weirdest and funniest kid I knew and we were instant friends. You've always been there for me and I trust you with everything. Whether we're at your house playing Nintendo for 5 hours or beach hopping laguna we always have fun together and I am always laughing either at you or with you. We've have so many fun memories together and I can't wait to make more during our senior year and throughout college. There's no doubt in my mind we'll be friends till we're old and can barely hold a GameCube controller.
Happy birthday to both my bros ❤️❤️ hope you guys have a great day. @jack_arm_strong @tony.manta

Period💜!!! @aprildivahstyles #UtmostRespectForAQueen #aDon #anInspiration #aVET My phone has been dead majority of the morning, but when I got back to it I had some of the best DMs! Sum from people telling me how proud they are of me, just when I feel like IM NOT DOING ENOUGH, people see the most in me. An especially special 'proud of you'DM came from my great college friend Brit! I always cry when she writes me because I just feel her SPIRIT! It’s so genuine! & you don’t get that enough these days. My DM from April, which I felt through my soul, because THIS is what I KNEW already. But I just love being myself so much, I don’t wanna lose ME while doing what I gotta do to get THERE! (But I know JUST what I gotta do, & funny things is, I’ve known it for a long time now.) a DM from a girl I met just ONCE during a fun not out, & she still kept in touch, & that just showed me that it’s OKAY to still meet people at an older age. We grow older and sometimes get stuck in the mindset of “IM NOT MEETING ANYMORE PEOPLE, IM TOO OLD TO BE MEETING NEW FRIENDS.” I’m here to tell you, I’m NOT! You have different friends for different things! That’s the beauty of LIVING. We’re not here on Earth to just meet friends as KIDS, just to grow old with those same people! & LADIES! Let’s stop being afraid of letting our spouse hang out sometimes! Even if they do have a lady friend, y’all have to build that trust with one another so that when both of y’all go out, (NOT with each other) y’all are secure enough in your relationship that y’all not worrying about the BAD that could be happening with them hanging out. Come on, do y’all really expect for somebody to come into your life, and completely drop every girl “FRIEND” that they have?? At some point we have to grow up. This took me a while to grasp, but I’m here now! 😝 because at the end of the day, who’s for you will be for you. And God will show you that, EASILY! But, I’m having such a great day y’all. We just got home from my baby Seven program, and listened to the kids sing, dance and collect their awards! Hope y’all day be as good as mine & I’m starting hair back tomorrow too y’all🤪💜

Autumn 🍂- I love you and sore you so much, from the 14 years I’ve know you have been fun and rough, from boyfriend exchanging, to fighting over bean bags to sit next to a boy we like, minstead, school, ghost hunting, school, college etc, being friends to not talking to being pretty much a new creation of sister to me, I love you for that, for the last 3 year of being super close I’m so glad to call you part of my family in a weird way! People say ‘you have to be friends for a long time to be the best’ although we technically have been, I’m glad we had a fresh start and have become closer, having a female best friend like you in my life had changed me so much, you are literally my inspiration on how to live with it, we have our days, we have days where we literally don’t want any communication but I don’t think we’ve ever had days where I actually want to kill you which I love! I think you’re a very strong person, and I just love you to bits your my Ginger babe, beautiful and amazing in so many way your personality makes you you and so in some way makes me, me! You’ve your just a joy to have you and I wouldn’t change it so thank you for everything you’ve done and love you Ginger snake 🐍 💕

Aaron- 18 years of friendship, wow. I love you so much and as the same as autumn I wouldn’t change my life without you, you’ve done [email protected] for me and we’ve had so many memories like, flying, the SEA GULAS, the skanning things in the woods with sticks, sharing boys again, what hoes we are 😂 school, college, everything. You make me happy everyday even when you piss me off and I don’t even want you to be around me I still want you there you make every day life more livible like work, stress, all that.. you also mean the world to me you both do, weird how far 18 years has taken us, even in the bad. You are also amazing, you make me laugh and cry, but overal I love you. So so much never think I don’t. Okay?
Overal I just wanted I be soppy and say I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am without these two in my life, I love them both equally and in different ways. Love you 💕💕

Mighty Men and women of Yahweh, Men and brethren Victory

On your marks, get set, go!

You just began the race of your life. Every time you achieve a goal, you’ll be onto the next; first adulthood, then relationships, career, family, college savings, adventures and vacations, mortgage, fancy material objects, and so on.

Do you realize that most people spend their lives racing towards one goal, only to get there and feel a moment (or few) of fulfillment, and move on?

It’s pretty wild. If you don’t stop and think about it, you may forget to notice it’s about the journey, rather than the end-point. It’s about ‘playing’ the game, not winning it. Sure, it feels great every time you’re on top in life, achieve a goal, and fulfill part of a dream you’ve created for yourself.

Yet, along the way, how many moments did you forget to pay attention? How many times were there opportunities to make your day just a bit more fun? When you look back a decade, which moments do you remember and which look like a blur? How about when you look back two decades?

If you’re anything like me, you want to have fun with your life. You want to enjoy yourself. You want to spend time with family and friends, and you want to make an impact.

It’s the fun you’ll remember, or you’ll remember the other extreme in sadness/trauma. When you add more fun to your life, you’ll shift the ratio of fun: sadness in favor of fun, and you’ll begin to remember more of your life in a positive way.

Plus, you’ll always be winning. You won’t have to wait for a moment of triumph — defined by a goal based upon human consumption and societal values, rather than inherent purpose and your own core values — in order to enjoy your life. The celebration never ends, and the low moments become a small fraction of time; seemingly unimportant.

Today’s thought exercise:

Write down 3 ways to make your life more fun within the next 24 hours, and from here on out.

Now, go on. Make them happen!

I double dog dare you
Sent to you with love, honor, and in service... Yours sincerely the heroes wanted aka fireman Sam #Revelation From The Throne Of Grace

Yesterday was my 31st day exactly since I began my 5 miles daily challenge until the Olympia.
I started on July 13.
Yesterday was also the 5th day that I missed.
I hate missing any days when I set my mind to try to set out to achieve something!! 😤🙄🤦🏽‍♀️
3 Days missed the weekend of our NPC show, 2 days missed the weekend I took my daughter back to college, and yesterday, well.... I slept in, went to church, then ended up spending the day with my Chinese Trini family that were town only for one day!
Now, all these days missed, I sure could have gone to bed earlier and got up earlier to do my 5 miles. But, I simply keep it moving the next day. 🏃🏾‍♀️💦🔥💪🏽 I am so thankful for my family! I am thankful for all my blessings. 🙏🏽Thankful we had a successful show thanks to @chrisminnes and his crew and @mrolympia08 and @dexterthebladeproductions and my people. @iamprettyk @elitetan407 @4luvoffitness And @mrmetrx! Also the awesome athletes that came out. I am thankful that @celine_elie20 is starting her sophomore year in school. That she had a great fun summer thanks to @deanna_raikes @draikes54 @deanamardini @elijah_is_the_man (thanks for always being their for her) and also for all her awesome friends that came out to celebrate my baby’s 19 year here on earth!
I’m so thankful to God!
And my beautiful crazily mixed up culturally fun loving excited and caring family!
I’m so blessed! We do not control what we are born into, but I’m so lucky! My father’s 1/2 Chinese side (his father is full Chinese (my grandfather)), are such a huge/diverse group of family members every where, from the D. R. to England, to California to Texas to Australia to Canada and still some back in China and Trinidad of course.... The smiles and the warmth and the love....it’s everything!
So. I count my blessings.
EVERYDAY! And unlike missing a few days of my 5 miles challenge, counting my blessings everyday, I do not skip a day! Life is short! Strive for your best, be your best, but most important,

LOVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN! COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS (however Big or Small). OH...AND
KEEP IT MOVING!
PS. (My older sister is the one that got the chinky eyes like my dad 🤣🤷🏽‍♀❤

Welcome you're here, from now on you will fall asleep with business proposals on your mind and wake up with Old Testament exam study guides filling your sight. Okay, not the common blog post about college you were expecting. Let's be completely raw and honest here. College is rough. The workload of 16 hours isn't fun. Having 8am class makes you miss your bed like you would never think. But even so, I am blessed. I have been blessed abundantly with a roommate who loves the Lord and chases after him each day. I have been blessed with the ability to attend a university that's core curriculum is focused on incorporating Christ into our everyday lives. I have been blessed with a cheer team that prays on the side lines when one of our boys is hurt. God has done great things. I am getting the opportunity here to work in, wait for it, a coffee shop. If you know me, it's been my dream to become a Barista! Blessed by the Lord. Hard times are here believe me. But the one thing that is prevalent is just how blessed and thankful I am. My school has daily bible studies, prayer sessions, and discipleship opportunities. My friends believe in the power of Christ and strive to focus their eyes on him.
My point for this entire thing is at times, I want to break down and cry from the overwhelming feeling I continually experience (and believe me I have). But the one thing that I find comfort in is my thanksgiving for what I have been provided. God is opening new ways of studying his scripture that I've never experienced. So for now I'm a Bison just trying to follow God's plan for her life. The Lord has been incredibly great to me and I am blessed. So today where ever you are whatever you are doing I'm going to ask you to do the cheesy typical thing. Find 8 reasons you believe you are blessed. Trust me once you find 8 you end up finding 9 then 10 then so on. Follow Gods calling on your heart and in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.
Psalm 136:1

🌸 I've started to do sports basicly the day I learned to walk 😅 Okay but for real I think I was in my first track&field comp at the age of 4-5 and the same with cross-country skiing. I've always wanted to compete & trying to be the best me in everything. We did a lot of different kind of outdoor sports with my family and also competed against to my 2 brothers😁 But back then it was (mostly) all about just having fun with family and friends
🌸 My mom took me to gymnastics practise when I was 8-9 y/o and we had to drive for an hour to get there every week because we lived in such a small village in Eastern Finland
🌸 When we moved to Southern Finland I got to the real (artistic) gymnastics training group and soon I was already competing (this was when I was 10 y/o)
🌸 Gymnastics was my main sport until I was 17, then we didn't have coaching anymore in my city. I wanted to move to Helsinki and continue with gymnastics/Team Gym but it was too much with the travelling, college and some work
🌸 I also competed in cross-country skiing every now and then until I was 15 y/o
🌸 I loved to do snowboarding in the winter time but haven't done it that much last few years
🌸 In the high school and college I was at the sports focused class so we had sports 3 x 2hrs a week at school (urheilupainotteinen luokka🤔🙆🏼‍♀️😅)
🌸 I started to go to the gym first time when I was 18 but started to train serious when I was 20🏋🏼‍♀️
🌸 Competed first time in IFBB Womens Fitness 2012 (won the Finnish Championships😇🏆) and have competed 12 times since that

What else?! Maybe there's quite a lot already 😁 I've also done bachelor of sports education in Vierumäki Sports Center of Finland so we did almost every sports in our first year at the studies (2011-2012). 😅 That was super fun though. I think the study program has changed now but that year was one of the best with aaaaalll the sports. Back then I decided I still want to do this in my life. Sports. Competing. A lot of sports. 🤸🏼‍♀️🏋🏼‍♀️🧘🏼‍♀️ Some coaching and helping others too. Related to sports. 😅👋🏻😍💕 #didisaysports 🏆

It's been a long, long time since I actually *introduced* myself to y'all.
1. I turned 31 today. And I can honestly say my 30s are WAY more fun so far than my 20s were. I always thought growing up that it would be the other way around.
2. I'm a night owl and can frequently stay up until 1:00-2:00 am without a problem (trying to break that bad habit but it's when the best ideas come to me). 3. I'm naturally an introvert and have to force myself out of my shell on a daily basis. Talking on IG Stories legit terrifies me, but I still try.
4. Roller coasters are my JAM! And I'm kind of sad I won't be able to ride one this summer now that I'm expecting.
5. I met Robert (my hubs) when I was waiting tables in college. Meeting my soulmate, was definitely the best tip I could have ever gotten.
6. I could listen to Broadway musical soundtracks on repeat all day long.
7. I was a dance choreographer / colorguard instructor in college and into my high school teaching career, so I have this unstoppable little dancer in my head every time I hear music.
8. I rushed home every day from junior high / high school to watch Trading Spaces... which explains a lot to me now in hindsight.
9. Since Day 1 of our marriage, Robert and I have held hands and prayed together every night before going to sleep. That one small tradition has helped us through thick and thin.
10. I'm so thankful for you all every day. And I hope I can give back to you even a tiny bit of what you give to me every day. Lots of love, friends!

We started working out together after school when we were 14 year old freshman, and we would never skip a single day. We discovered our passion for fitness at exactly the same time, which made it all the more fun to train together every day. Our friends used to laugh at us because we brought rolled up meat and cheese to eat for lunch and a gallon jug of water. We loved it though, because it was something we had that no one else in our school had: A true, homegrown, uninfluenced obsession for health and fitness. .
In college, nothing changed. When all our friends were going out partying, we were at the gym, even late into the weekend nights. Not because we were trying to “better ourselves” by working out instead of partying and drinking, we just loved it. We wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else.
.
After college once we both had separate lives, we still found time to train together whenever possible. We never dreamed of being pro bodybuilders or anything of that sort. We would be training even if there wasn’t “a goal” at the end of it. Passion doesn’t need a goal, it just loves to enjoy itself.
.
Fast forward to last weekend. I did my first bodybuilding show last July, and ever since I had been asking Kalvin to do a show with me. Long story short, he decided to go for it, and to compete in Classic Physique instead of Men’s Physique. Even though I enjoyed winning my class and taking home gold for the first time, what I enjoyed far more was competing alongside my best friend and lifelong training partner, and watch him blow those other 8 dudes off the stage. Not only did he win his class too, but he won the overall. I’ve never been so proud in my life. To have both of us take home Gold after 14 years of training together was a surreal experience I’ll never forget.
.
These two pictures are 10 years apart. 18 years old and 28 years old. Life has a lot of ups and downs, but nothing makes them easier to deal with than having a friend who sticks closer than a brother. On to Nationals, my dude! #IRONSHARPENSIRON

.
.
I am a Barista and a coffee enthusiast. Anyone who knows me well would tell you that I live and breathe coffee, to the extent that my nickname among some is “Irene Caffeine”. I started drinking caffeine consistently probably in middle school and when I got to college Monsters turned into Red Bull turned into Espresso. .
.
The day before Lent, I sarcastically joked about giving up caffeine for Lent. Then my friends encouraged me to do it, so I did. The two days leading up to Ash Wednesday I had 16 shots of espresso. 400mg is the maximum amount of caffeine that is safe for an adult to consume in one day, in two days I had 1,424mg of caffeine. This was a normal thing for me.
.
.
Some lessons I’ve learned the past six weeks:
1. There is a strong correlation between caffeine and insomnia. (Who knew?)
2. Sleep is necessary after all. (I slept through 2 classes, meetings, 2 shifts, and more my first week without caffeine)
3. Coffee really does help you focus.
4. Espresso doesn’t necessarily wake me up it just makes my heart beat faster.
5. I am a lot calmer of a person without caffeine.
6. My professors worry more about my mental health when I am not caffeinated.
7. Coffee is considered a drug for a reason and withdrawal is NOT fun.
8. Not drinking coffee saves a lot of money.
9. If you can’t go six weeks without something, then your dependency on said thing is something you need to seek help for.
.
.
I am drinking coffee again, but in moderation. The most important lesson I learned was the extent to which coffee helped me focus and as a college student heading towards the end of another semester I am using coffee as a tool for concentration. I am so thankful for the friends that kept me accountable when I wanted to give up and the much needed rest this provided.
.
.
I challenge any of you fellow coffee lovers to just go a week without coffee and see how your body reacts. It is possible to survive without it, but only if you want to.

I share a lot of my day-to-day with you around here (and in my stories) but today I thought it would be fun to share some random things about myself. Here we go!
1️⃣ I’ve lived in Toronto my whole life, minus 2 years when my family lived in Belleville, ON. I’m a big city girl at heart!
2️⃣ I went to college for musical theatre after high school. It was a big dream of mine and I still love performing onstage when I can, and infuse much of what I do with some extra jazz hands.
3️⃣ In my early 20s I was diagnosed with #crohns disease. After being given the options of medication, hardcore medication or surgery, I decided to take a different path! I started seeing a naturopath and changed my diet, and within 2 weeks I was pain-free. I’m still #glutenfree and #dairyfree, and symptom free about 97% of the time.
4️⃣ I haven’t always loved fitness. I dropped gym after grade nine because it was bringing down my average and was put in pre-beginner dance classes in college. I was a bit of a klutz and didn’t love being sweaty!!
5️⃣ I’m growing out my pixie after 2 years of short hair life! My hair was the shortest it’s been since I was a baby, but it’s been super fun. I’m happily surprised at how easy the transition to grow it out has felt.
6️⃣ Before the age of 21 I had only ever been on a plane twice. 🌎 ✈️ Since then I’ve expanded my horizons throughout Canada, the US, St. Lucia, Barbados, Jamaica, England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany and Hong Kong.
7️⃣ As an adult, I’ve gone back and forth about whether or not I want kids. In my 20s I was into it, and then in my 30s I was a pretty strong no. In the last year I’ve changed my mind again - perhaps it’s being surrounded by adorable littles! Being a mom is pretty scary to me, but I think it’s something I’d like to brave someday.
Your turn: what’s one random fact about you?!

This past year, what a year which started in deep sorrow & ended in joy. This has been the most rollercoaster, change-filled, wonderful year of my life, and although it had deep lows and incredible highs, I thank the Lord for it. 2017 started off with my Poppi meeting the Lord after a long & difficult battle with liver cancer, and the grief was almost unbearable. He was my favorite person, and I miss making him laugh, hearing his wisdom, and being around his joyful presence with all my heart. Without the support of my dear friends, roommates, family, & Todd's love, I wouldn't be where I am today. This year I started going to counseling which was one of the greatest gifts, God truly has a heart for the broken-hearted, and He loves to see us rise up from the things that hold us down. I found community & celebrated with friends, and I graduated from college! A feat I am so thankful to have gone through & come out victoriously. I moved out to a cottage on my own for the first time, and then Todd asked me to be his best-friend for life, which with tears of sweet joy I sobbed yes. :) I planned a wedding for the first time which was more challenging, stressful, and wonderful than I could've imagined because it all meant I got to spend precious time with my Mom, who helped me make my dream wedding into a reality. On October 14th, surrounded by our friends & people we love, I married my favorite person and we made a covenant to love & lift each other before Christ every day of our lives. This is my favorite day of my life, and every day after has been more joyful, to be one & living life with Todd. A week later we flew to Paris and walked along the Seine each day, finding new foods and parks to enjoy together. I had the BEST hot coco of my life at Angelina's, and then we took a train through the Alps to see Florence in the Fall. It was a wonderful honeymoon full of doing what we love-traveling & experiencing life together, & we were ready to be back home. We finished the year out with thanksgiving on the beach in Florida with my family, a white Christmas in Illinois, & a fun new years with friends. My heart has been stretched & filled, & I pray 2018 be peace-filled.

I almost started the letter with "Dear..." but then pictured you rolling your eyes, so decided against it.
It's amazing how sometimes you meet a person for the first time and know that you both will click, be great friends forever. Well, I didn't get those vibes from you. I was a timid freshman in college when your then-girlfriend told me about you, "Oh dear, how can you not know him? He's that guy with long hair and always in a metal band tee and black leather jacket!" Thereafter, it wasn't difficult to spot you, or at least your gang of guy friends in college (all with long hair and death-metal shirts). I think it took a while for my brain to completely process your identity, but we eventually started speaking about Java and data structures.
Then one fine day, we hit common ground. It started with replying to each other's messages with our self-composed poetry and you enlightening me about head bangs and mosh pits.
A couple of years later, you became my 3 am buddy. Thanks to my new roommate who spoke the same native language as you and talked in her sleep. Well, I just wanted to make sure the sleep-talk wasn't anything scary. But soon enough, on sleepless nights, we were talking about serious things in life - chocolate, cars, and of course, your new haircut.
I wouldn't say I am breaking the stereotype that a boy and a girl can't be 'just friends'. I'd lost my heart to guy friends before. 'Cause after knowing you closely for 4 years, I know it's different between us. We don't need to text each other everyday to ensure we'll be there to answer any urgent 3 a.m. call. We don't share details about every heartbreak or trouble, but we definitely keep each other updated about the latest crush or fling. I am glad we still give each other life saving tips and talk about our dreams of travelling, saving money for a startup. It's been a fun journey with you, 3 a.m. or otherwise. And while I do believe now, that this friendship is here to stay, I would also like to believe that you wouldn't be the guy I would marry if I am still single after 50. You rock, bro.

Are.
Everything.

We need each other.
We crave connection.
We want to feel like we belong...somewhere.

For my entire life, all 35 years of it
I've never felt like I 'fit in'
Anywhere.

Growing up I had my handful of friends
(You know who you are)
And I was always on some kind of team
Or a member of a club
I even joined a sorority in college
(PS: Best decision ever)
And as an adult, I've been constantly surrounded
By women in the world of coaching.

I remember my senior year of high school
Winning the award for 'Most Popular'
Wondering how the hell that was even possible
I seriously could count my close friends on one hand.

In college...I was social chair of my sorority
AKA: party planner
When my friends needed a wing woman
Count me in for a night out at the bars
Even still, I've never felt like I truly belonged.

Have you ever felt that way?

Something I've craved for a long time
Is to be surrounded by a group of women
Who love each other
Support one another
Lift each other up
Play on the same team
Link arms together
Do life together
Collaborate instead of hate
Where there's no eye rolling
No talking behind each other's backs
No leaving someone behind
No separation
No individual agenda
Just coming togetherness.

And that's tough for all of us
If we're honest, right?

I'm so grateful a group of women
People I now call friends
Found me, opened the door
And said come sit here
Because you do belong.

We get to do life together
Grow together
Learn together
Overcome obstacles together
Travel together
Give back together
Do life together
Earn money togther
Lead together
Empower other women together
And have so much fun doing it all together
Little did I know {Shampoo} would bring us together.

So today, on International Women's Day
I celebrate YOU, I celebrate all women
It's time we link arms in the most powerful of ways
In a way where we show others you DO belong
In a way where we show others ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
In a way where we show we ARE BETTER TOGETHER
No matter where we've been or where we came from.

xoxo

I actually grew up spending every weekend skiing and downhill racing competitively (fun fact, I used to race against @mikaelashiffrin many moons ago)

When I moved to America when I was in high school, the mountain was further away and I decided to convince my parents to let me stay home on the weekends so I had more time to “focus on homework” but really, so that I could have more of a normal life and go to parties. I really hated missing out on birthdays and fun winter weekend activities with my school friends up until that point. I was always the one who couldn’t hang out outside of school because the minute I got home on Friday, it was off to the mountain until Monday

In college, I considered going to a school around the mountains, but I dunno. Honestly I don’t even know how I ended up at my uni, to this day

I don’t regret a MINUTE of it. I’ve loved my journey. But here I am, years later, and that life feels like a distant memory... realizing my parents had the right idea all along. I met my all time best friends on that mountain. (My soul sisters that I don’t get to see or talk to enough but when we do, it’s like nothing ever changed @leahamaclean @natquesnel @emkalacis )
I had the opportunity to grow along side some kickass people. And when I’m clicked into those flat planks of mine, going as fast as I can through the bumps, it’s the only place I really feel at home. It’s not all of me, but it’s definitely a big piece of my base layer.

I didn’t get to ski much this year but who knows what the future may bring! I’m open to whatever the universe throws me next 💛🍭🌝🌸✨ (lol I’m reading this back and it feels so dramatic but it’s how my heart feels!)

Ryan and I went through college together, pretty much from start to finish. Goofy tall kid who could out ball anyone. 🏀 We met when we started pledging this fraternity Sammy’s and Little did we know it was the best and the worst of times. I always randomly recall memories with Ryan. One time Ryan and I were going to Toronto to see @dondiablo on Halloween. Ryan said he got a deal on the hotel and it’s going to be 100 dollars a night. When we arrived at the hotel, it was amazing. Huge gym the over looked the city, two huge hotel beds with a view that over looked the city. We went out and had an amazing Halloween, 🎃 even though we weren’t able to get into the concert Ryan made the best of it. Later that night Ryan snd I were sitting in the hot tube (which was also inside this hotel). I’m telling Ryan “man Ryan, how did you get us such a nice hotel so cheap?” he goes, “Pays to know people.” so we are at check out the next day waiting for the bill. Ryan gets handed the bill and opens it. The bill wasn’t what he thought it would. The look on Ryan’s face was priceless. We ended up paying the bill and Ryan being the guy he is threw way more then he should have. Ryan is man. Another memory I have of Ryan is during one of our drunken college nights. We wanted to play xbox all night and just hangout. We ended up somehow drinking an entire bottle of fire ball. (relax everyone we were in college) some how stole the lounge room couch, just so we could have a couch to sit on to play Xbox. Ryan was one my best friends, we did so much together. I like to look back at all the fun reckless memories and laugh. That’s what he would want me to do. Ryan had a tattoo of a turtle with a tree growing off his back. So Ryan I’m tweaking your idea for a tattoo in memory of you. Ryan you were my brother I’ll never forget you. Tattooed by my buddy @jrutskiart

In my post-college years I remember going through (what felt like) mourning brought on by the recession, living far away from my family & friends, but most importantly the realization that nobody truly cares.
I know I know how ~dramatic~. What I mean is that for a long time we rely on the structures around us to define our meaning and tell us how to be happy simply because that’s all we know. The big ones are school and (if we’re lucky) family.
Then all of the sudden school, one of our life’s biggest infrastructures, gets ripped away, you’re thrown into a space without clear direction followed by the burning question “What do I do now?” and the realization (this one messed with me) that nobody actually knows what they’re doing, what will happen in the future and nobody can tell us how to be happy — including our parents!!!! (Except for you Mom. You know everything.) So I guess maybe it’s not that people don’t care. It’s that they even if they do care they can’t actually do anything about it.
We are each responsible for our ALL our actions, those actions have the ability to create the environment around us, and NOBODY can live your life for you — even if they wanted to!!!! This truth crippled me for months. I remember grasping for answers, talking to people I respected and wanted to be when I grew up, but after each conversation the story was always the same: now it’s up to you.
I became sad and scared. What if I messed up? Disappointed my family? Generally failed at literally everything?
When I stopped self-depreciating long enough to look up, I saw that I had let my circumstances run away from me and had become someone I wasn’t proud of.
I was constantly fearful, not taking care of myself, at home all the time, not trusting of anyone and just generally not fun to be around.
Who was this person?
So I got up, forgave myself, and started moving towards the person I wanted to be.
That was 8 years ago.
(Continued in comments.)

Everyone tells me that the miata is a shitty car and that I should just get rid of it just so I can have a couple of extra bucks in my wallet. The miata is probably a car I will own for the rest of my life. I know it's not the fastest car nor the most practical, but it's fun. The way how this car handles is just perfect, no other car can compete with it. The miata will always have a special place in my heart because I loved that specific miata that I own. I remember being at my uncle's when he owned it and I remember telling him that one day I will own that car. Ever since I was a kid I loved the miata that I now own. And yeah my dad bought it for me for Christmas/Graduation but I plan on spending more money on it than what my dad paid for. There came a time when my dad almost took the car away from me when I got the Focus cause he thought I didn't need it anymore but I fought hard and I ended up keeping the car. It's not in the best condition but what can you expect from a miata? I'm actually happy about it so I can put on the work to rebuild it and make it better. Now the Focus is my first car that I ever bought on my own. It's not the Focus st or even the se model. It's the bare basic s model. But that car is a symbol of my hard working and dedication. I'm a full time college student plus I'm a full time worker who's suppose to be working part time. It's tough juggling school, work, and extra responsibilities while hanging out with friends. But I manage and this is my proof. Always paid my insurance and car note in full never late. But I'm not here trying to brag off to everyone saying that I have two cars and shit. I'm here to show that if you put hard work and dedication into something it will show. And this is my proof. I'm 19 years old and got 2 cars. Got a good job while going to college. You can do ANYTHING as long as you can put your mind to it. All you got to do is keep working hard and eventually you'll get there. #miata #mazda #ford #focus #motivation #nevergiveup #hardworkpaysoff

I had no idea how to take care cats and what it entailed to adopt 3 of them. 9 years later I can't imagine my life without my cats. Even tho pixies demise is fresh in my head I always tell people I have 3 fat cats.
So this is my version of #36daysoftypeforfun. This allows me to draw whatever I want and can in the given time frame without the pressure of continuity or creating some super detailed magnum opus of illustrations. I think everyone should be able to participate in this series if you have the idea of just having fun.

So I urge anyone who wants to but is too scared to just give it a try. For fun.

To my stepmom auntie, Thankyou for embracing us like your own. For the undying support and help, for the love. My siblings, you guys are my first bestfriends thank you for love and comfort. And ofcourse to the man above, I couldn’t be where I am today if wasn’t your plan. Ya allah, thank you for the gift of life, your guidance is my weapon why I’ve came this far, and I know you still have a lot of good things for me. In honor of being just SIX DAYS away from the #MissUniversityofFloridaScholarshipPageant, I’ll be sharing my love for the Gator Nation every day in a new way. These posts will vary from ways I’ve been preparing for the pageant, moments and memories that have shaped me throughout my college experience, and even my favorite local spots around town! ••• #6 Some of my fondest memories in college so far are attending the UF Baseball games with my closest friends. Fun fact: I dreamt up my “Camp C.R.O.W.N.ing” initiative in the stands a couple of years ago.😂It really doesn’t get any better than sportsmanship, the Swamp, and singing our Alma Mater arm and arm with the rest of the stadium. Hope to hit a “home run” with my performance at Miss UF next Wednesday! ⚾️ Message me for tickets!

Someone asked me what I was into, I thought about it and said that I read health books for fun. Soon after I booked into the bachelor of health science degree in nutritional medicine at @endeavourcollege for the next 5 years their Melbourne campus was my home. I learnt so much throughout my degree. I thought I knew a lot about health before my course, but the more I learnt the more I realised I had to learn. My career has taken different paths in health since, from consulting, to talks and cooking demonstrations to radio, none in which I envisioned while doing my study. This is me on the radio interviewing gorgeous super naturopath @herbnerdreece who also studied at @endeavourcollege . I am deeply passionate about nutrition and holistic health. The foundation of my love and my knowledge came from Endeavour College. Not only did I learn how to help others, I learnt so much about myself and how important my own health mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually is. This foundation is a big reason why I’m now so passionate about creating events that celebrate holistic health through my business Soul Star @soulstarweare . Endeavour College has their open Day on this Saturday 21 January and running at all six Endeavour campuses in Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, from 10am to 1:30 pm. Speak with lecturers, students andgraduates, learn about our Bachelor degrees, explore the campuses, and find out about educational pathways and study options. Friends and families welcome - there will be interactive activities and natural goodies for everyone to enjoy https://www.naturalhealthopenday.com.au/ #sponsored #health #nutritionist #study 😊

I have a lot to tell you about my life if you're bored and want to read. 1. coming home from college is both really nice and really not. I got so used to freedom 100% of the time that this kinda sucks... the whole "tell mom and dad where you're going and when you'll be home" thing. plus all of my friends aren't next door to me and we can't hang out every minute of every day and it makes me so sad... 2. moana is the best thing that has EVER happened to me. okay that's a little bit of a stretch but I LOVE MOANA. I love all of the songs and Lin Manuel Miranda holds my heart.. it is seriously so beautiful 3. you should watch the video in my bio. it's google's "what the world searched for in 2016" video and it is absolutely beautiful. 4. I'm going to be a little bit blunt and rude but I'm glad Instagram isn't what it used to be... sure it was fun in it's prime but there are much bigger and better things out there. i got so used to this "world" of girls bragging about accomplishments and what they've gotten that I started expecting the world to be handed to me too... but that's not how it works. Instagram isn't real life! shocker huh? and now I know that and I'm actually working towards my goals and it feels really, really good. weird rant but I had to say it. 5. do yourself a favor and when you get older and "cooler", do not replace the people that care about you with partying. don't put alcohol before people. EVER. you will loose those who love you. 6. please know how to do your own laundry and cook a little bit before going to college. I've had to teach people how to do laundry. it's a little bit crazy. 7. I still love each and every one of you and hope you're doing fantastically and I miss you. please still talk to me if you're bored or need any help with anything. ❤️ I am still here.

Sean and I have been friends since my junior year of high school. Like Kathy, he's been there for me through the good and the bad. Both friends were in my wedding, visited when we had kids, when we lost Shaundi and they always call on my birthday, even though I'm terrible at this. These are the two people I call when things are really good AND when things are bad.
I had a lot of fun this weekend, reminiscing about crazy Mexico trips and more.

This one gives me heart palpitations because this incredible woman grew up blocks away from me. When you work in the wedding industry, no matter how much you want to go against the grain, I still believe that we all believe in fate. My friendship with Krissy is just that. Yes, we went to the same jr.high. So you might point to that as to why we bonded. But, the truth is, we got split during high school and we had a much more fascinating story than that post-college in San Francisco. I was living in Pac Heights (that’s a SF neighborhood for those of you who don’t know) at the time and I had read rave reviews about this incredible brunch spot called the Red Door Cafe. You guys! This place was EPIC and sadly is now closed. But, the owner was this fabulous gay man who danced to Britney as you waited (who cares when he’s this fab!) a long while to get into one of his 5ish tables. He fed you drinks and apps to make the long line more bearable. He was magic and I actually thought of him a lot when starting LOHO. His spirit was fire! His dedication to make you have fun no matter what was infectious. Anyway, it was here that I ran into Krissy and her bestie Sam as we both hoped to land a table at this San Francisco staple. We laughed, caught up, and vowed we should hang since we hadn’t seen each other for at least 7ish years. Ok, that’s normal. But it’s not as easy to run into a childhood friend and just know you’re going to become friends again. So, what made me know this was fate? Same day, I also decided to see a film that night at Kabuki (which was my fav fav theatre in SF and I had no problem going solo)...and who is there at the same screening? Krissy and Sam. This, my friends is truly FATE. Moral of this long story is — If you end up at the same place twice in the same day with 2 badass chicks, you befriend them immediately. No questions asked. And so I did, and here we are! Major full circle moment. Love you @kofoto! Congrats to you and Matt! X 📷: @megmessina // Planner: @ruby.and.rose // Gown: @odylynetheceremony

I thought I’d do a little intro for my new friends and a recap intro for my old friends...BUT I really want to know something fun about you so even if you do read all of this, will you tell me one fun fact about you that not many people know?
.
.
Here’s the basics of me:
.
.
I’m Courtney. I write small town contemporary stories (some romance some women’s fiction). My 8th novel releases in June.
.
.
I drink too much coffee. I want my husband to buy me a dog (a Bernedoodle would be super great, thanks.) I love the Midwest. I’m healing naturally from severe #adrenalfatigue and #hashimotos. I can’t go a day without washing my hair. I carry deodorant with me everywhere. I think nerds are cool. I love stories. I’ve got degrees in theatre and journalism. My husband and I own @thestudiorockford, a performing arts studio and youth theatre. We work with kids and direct big shows and fall in love with stories (and each other) over and over again. .
.
I spent a summer at a Broadway Theatre in NY during college where Al Pacino was doing a show. It was hands-down one of the best experiences of my whole life. I’m scared to fly over water. I wish I could dance (and sing!). My three kids are super awesome. And did i mention I want my husband to buy me a dog? (Scroll to see the one I want...) .
.
Ok, your turn!

Are you shy?

Do you barely have any friends?

Do you absolutely have zero sales experience?
AWESOME...you are just like our #CaughtInTheAdventure story today....Double Diamond, Rachel Lea!! Rachel, wow your story is so inspiring and we are all so excited for you and your family. Keep going. Keep believing in yourself and most importantly have the most #fun you have ever had.

Here's Rachel... “💓MY STORY💓 Full time Nurse Practitioner to Part time Mompreneur in 1 1/2 years:

My name is Rachel Flanagan, and this is my story!! I am a #Nurse Practitioner, wife to Dan, and a mommy to a beautiful little girl named Ruby who is my whole world. Here's the thing: I’m nobody special! I work hard but the fact is, most people do!! I went to high school, went to college. I got a degree in nursing and a great job as a Nurse Practitioner. In fact I put myself over $150,000 in debt just to HAVE that career. I was never really happy but, it's easy to get comfortable. I had a great job but even still we were just scraping by. There was never any extra money around. I saw my friends going on vacations and honeymoons....we had become a "just enough family." It felt so unfair. I choose medicine because I truly wanted to help people, but I found a field that made it so hard to add value to people, due to rules, red tape, deadlines and bottom lines. In the midst of it all...we found out we were pregnant. I had never planned to be a mom.... The moment they placed my baby girl on my belly, I fell more in love than I had ever been and it wasn’t about me anymore. I took 4 blissful months off of work. It was HEAVEN!!! I loved being a mom and being home with Ruby!! I dreaded going back. Then when I did, I was MISERABLE. I had to leave her at #daycare every day and I'd have no idea if she had been happy or cried and missed mommy every day.
Right then and there, I decided I had been living a life that someone else had chosen for me, my #vision became crystal clear. I knew I wanted to be a work from home #mom!! I didn’t want to be drowning in loan debt anymore. I wanted to be able to take #vacations without having to beg for time

(Go to school, Get good grades, Come out, Find a good job, and work for someone else for the rest of your life.) Fortunately for me this plan didn’t last too long 😂😂😭
I was never really a “straight A” student, but it doesn’t take a perfect gpa to understand and realize that what use to work 5-10+ years ago isn’t working today. I’ve watched friends, family, and complete strangers do everything they were told to do and still come out struggling in the game called life. And if it weren’t for a decision to do something different back then I honestly have no idea what the hell life would look like for me today. 😳

But here’s what I can say... Because of my choice to make a decision for change, and my ability to block out all of the naysayers, and MLM haters/non believers 4 years later I have went from being a kid with a fear of public speaking to speaking in front of hundreds of people, I have traveled more in 4 years then most do in a lifetime, I have met some amazing people, connected with 7-8 figure mentors, have had a shit ton of fun and lastly I have been given the opportunity and ability to impacted more lives here then I ever would have with any other career choice.

My point is this. Live the the life that you want for yourself and make the choices that you think are right for you. Don’t live in fear of the opinions of friends and family, and stop trying to make everyone around you happy. Noone has ever done anything worth doing by “just going with the flow,” and if there’s one thing that I’ve learned is that most of the people in your life won’t support you until strangers begin to celebrate you💯💯🙏🏼 It’s 2018 people! Let’s start to Live like it 😎🤘🏽

I wasn’t ever very good but I had a lot of fun hanging out with my friends at the skatepark. By college I basically had totally stopped doing it. Since I barely get any time for exercise these days, I’ve started to pick it back up recently. Trying to skate 30 minutes a day just to get some exercise and blow off steam after working all day. I still suck but it’s fun and it makes me feel slightly younger.

I started babysitting when I was twelve. In college, I was the Arts and Crafts leader for a summer camp. I was goofy and fun. Then onto teaching elementary school.
.

As a mom, I find that I spend more time correcting my kids and trying to teach them how to listen, be respectful, do their chores, be kind, and the list goes on, that I forget how to have fun with them.
.

I gave up yelling at them for Lent. I’ve done this for several years but after Lent I fall back into my old habits of yelling. This year feels different. I feel that my stress level has gone down since I’ve stopped yelling at them.
.

I’m trying to remember I don’t always have to be the “fun sponge” as one of my friends calls it. I can be part of the fun instead of the one trying to keep everything in control.
While at a kids museum today, I let the kids paint my face. They loved it. It really is the small things that bring them joy and I needed to be reminded of that today. .

I don’t write all of this to cause anymore Mom guilt than we already put on ourselves. I just want to remind you that we are all struggling with this parenting thing.
.
And day 3 of the #march10x10 challenge.

I’ve gained some followers over the weekend and I make the assumption that people know me since many of you do - but not everyone does. Here’s a little about me: I used to work for a law firm in Athens, Ga after I graduated from Sweet Briar College. It was there I took my first yoga class at Rubber Soul Yoga with Nick Ryanerson. I loved yoga immediately but it wasn’t until I moved to Austin in 2009 that yoga became an every day facet of my life thanks to my friends @cormarhan and @texas_climber A few more years down the road and a Crossfit CFL1 later, I decided I was in the wrong line of movement and decided to get my RYT-200 from @blackswanyoga back in ATX - at the time I was living in Lynchburg, Va. Upon graduating I opened up my own yoga space (pictured above) in what was the @keepclny (RIP). Even after that space was sold, I taught in Lynchburg for about a year. In fact, it was about 4 years ago to the day that this picture was taken of me in my original Congruence Yoga studio. In 2015 Matt and I moved to Atlanta and I began a 3 year stint of teaching there. Fun fact, I was pregnant when I auditioned for all of the studios where I eventually got hired. I went on to run a studio in Buckhead but realized that it just wasn’t for me. I don’t know if I will ever teach full-time for someone else ever again. You see, when you boil it down most studios are exclusive places (most not all). Its really unfortunate and its just not for me. I loved teaching out of a co-op that my friends and I built with our own blood sweat and tears. That was MY offering, pure, simple and accessible to anyone. If I could give you all a space like the one I had at the Keep I would in a heart beat. But until that time comes again, I’ll teach you private lessons and make videos and take pictures and moonlight at studios where I know people ARE inclusive. I might end up being poor my whole life or I might end up finding a way to make this work for me. Who knows. This insta is about sharing my practice, teaching tips from and ERYT and announcements about my life. Thanks for following!

Burning brighter than the sun refusing to be taken lightly. She was driven by all things that caused her pain. And what failed to weaken her flames became fuel.” ——————————————It’s funny how this close to show we all start to feel so many physical and mental changes from day to day (no forget that -hour to hour lol). I LOVE this part the most!! Even though it can also be stressful as we may be tired, weak, or getting sick of some of the same foods. We are also at a point where we are so in tune with our bodies and mind and I think that’s what keeps bringing me back to competing. I crave this mental clarity like nothing else. Even though I do get this from my yoga or meditation practices it’s never quite as strong as when you’re nearing the finish line of a larger goal (no matter what that goal may be -you gotta admit it’s fun to put a ✔️ right!) In the past week I have had a few very meaningful talks with friends, my sisters and my coach. I received the kindest message from someone I hadn’t spoken to since college letting me know how I had inspired their own fitness journey. When I never even expected be on this persons radar. Completely honoured 🙏🏼😉 ...and so proud of you! You just never know who’s watching right! Then this morning found my usual 20 min meditation turning into an hour (easily becoming my new addiction lol) These moments to reflect, talks with great friends and moments of clarity and focus has me so excited for what’s to come😊. ———————————————Photographer: @dangalicphotography

I have been up all night trying to process the loss of a very close family friend.... @dickyt1954 Dicky Trotter passed yesterday afternoon. I new Dicky my whole life, he was my fathers very good friend, hunting buddy, fishing buddy and running buddy for years and years. I bought my very first hunting rifle from Dicky with my own money, it was a Browning .243, I still own it and think of him everyday when I see it. Dicky was a hero, mentor & someone I looked up to growing up.

Dicky loved hunting and fishing, he started The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston some 30 plus years ago and it is still thriving today, he was a huge part of Ducks Unlimited in SC with its growth and success. One of the best memories anyone can carry about Dicky was his legendary fall dove hunts on Saturday's at his farm in the feeder lot field.
He and my father were the best of friends and their exploits and nights out in Columbia are the stuff of legends, they had more fun hunting, fishing, cooking & partying than anyone. One of the best stories ever will always be the night Dicky and my dad returned from a DU event and upon pulling into our driveway at the farm and getting dad out the car he promptly proceeded to run over him... no harm no foul but a story that lasted the test of time.
Dicky was a humanitarian, he opened up his barn at Trotter Farms for years for the Eastover Ruitan to hold their semi annual oyster roast that raised scholarship money for rural country kids to go to college.
Most recently Dicky spent his time on Tybee Island GA bringing his wit, humor and love to his friends there. Dicky we will miss your daily FB post as many of us looked forward to that morning smile you would provide with a post.
In your memory I will borrow and keep alive 2 sayings you posted frequently that I looked forward to and made me have a lil better outlook on each & every day... (1) Today Is A Good Day To Do Good Things (2) Thoughts Become Things, Choose The Good Ones

Thoughts, prayers & love to his beautiful daughters, he loved you girls so much.
RIP my friend I will always love you and miss you, so many great memories of you.

•I am definitely both! 😂 My dad is a huge comic fan, so I grew up with them all around the house! I go to San Diego Comic Con every year with my dad and friends, so comics are a huge part of my life! I'm also a huge cosplayer! My friends and I always do Disney Bounds, and always cosplay at Comic Con! It is so much fun! Recently my good friend @tashapolis and I dressed as KYLO REN AND REY!!! We Disney bounded as #REYLO! If you want to see the photos you can check out her Instagram @tashapolis or my personal Instagram @caden_sage !! It was so much fun! Because of that love for cosplaying and comics, I was so drawn to the two books above by @cecilseaskull !!! They look right up my alley, and I cannot wait to read them! ❤️❤️❤️ •

Woke up feeling extra grateful for the opportunities that I have been given and the place that I am in right now that I didn’t know were fathomable this time last year. Last spring, I was filled with fear and was afraid of just about everything I was about to face as my time in school was about to end. I was afraid of... picking up everything I own and moving to a new city, what life after college would bring, finding a job - not only a job but one that would be flexible with Arie and I’s current season of life, not being successful, succeeding, making new friends, leaving old friends, not going back home to AZ to my family after college, and let’s be honest, afraid Fredrick wouldn’t make the trip to VA (half kidding). Writing this now, I chuckle because I love Ashburn, VA/ DC with all of my heart. With the help of Arie’s closest friends (Go Stags) and families, they have become my second family in such a short period of time. Not only do I have a job but I have a job that is flexible, fun, and is EXACTLY what I went to school for. Even though I may not talk or see my friends everyday, I know that our bond is so special and unique that something more than miles, oceans and mountains will have to get between us. As for my family, there is not a day that I don’t wish I could be in Arizona to give them a big squeeze. And last but not least, Fredrick is alive, doing well, and celebrated 1 year of being @mialandegren’s and I’s fish-baby. With all of that said, THANK YOU to @akouandjio74 for being so supportive of me and making this transition in my life so smooth. Thank you to @natefromgam for taking a chance on a girl who’s only knowledge of the printing industry was the Office. And thank you my family @norrist45 for encouraging me to follow my dreams, for being my rock, voice of reason and everything in between. I learned that nothing is ever as bad and scary as it seems and that with a little encouraging kick in the tush for the people that are closest to you, you can achieve more than you could ever imagine.

I had NO idea what I was going to do with my life when I graduated from UCLA.
.
Go to law school?
Get a masters?
Get a job?
I HAD NO CLUE.
.
I knew one thing, I was OVER softball.
I needed a break.
I wanted to define myself as something else; someone else.
.
In my stubbornness,
that’s where my journey began.
.
To be honest, I was scared.
Scared of picking the wrong career.
Scared of being unhappy.
Scared of not being able to support myself.
Scared.
.
On top of all those things, the day I graduated from college my Mom said “give me _______ & here you go.”
In what felt like an instant, my gas cards were gone & my bills were left.
Car.
Insurance (car + health).
Everything.
.
I think this was my parent’s trick to combat my stubbornness (I probably should have had a job lined up by now), but, it didn’t work.
.
You see, NOTHING FELT RIGHT.
.
Sure, I didn’t know what I wanted to do,
but, I knew how I wanted to feel.
And,
a corporate,
9-5,
wear real clothes every day,
happy hour with friends
after you’ve been trapped in a cubicle for 8 hours,
SOUNDED LIKE HELL.
.
Here’s where stubbornness & fate collided.
.
In the corner of the Firecrackers’ warehouse I found my voice; I felt my passion.
Girl after girl,
family after family,
I learned my life’s purpose.
.
And then, I was asked to coached this team.
.
This 12u team filled with the sweetest girls on the planet.
Girls who LOVED softball.
Who wanted to learn.
Who were so full of love.
Girls who soaked up every word you said.
Who had fun every day they stepped on the field.
Girls who had HUGE dreams and who let me convince them that the WOULD accomplish them all.
.
These were the girls who changed me.
.
Now, they’re seniors in college.
They’re some of your favorite players.
They’re still the sweetest girls.
.
And now, they’re almost at the place I started.
.
You blink and 9 years go by.
Those 12u girls are about to hit the real world and all I can wish is that they’re as stubborn as I was.
I hope they get to feel their passion.
I hope they know the impact they can have on this world.
I hope someone or something rocks their world as they did mine.
.
I love you all.
I am so damn proud of you girls.

(Go to school, Get good grades, Come out, Find a good job, and work for someone else for the rest of your life.) Fortunately for me this plan didn’t last too long 😂😂😭 I was never really a “straight A” student, but it doesn’t take a perfect gpa to understand and realize that what use to work 5-10+ years ago isn’t working today.

I will not sugarcoat that I am happy about the performance today. I am upset about a lack of competitiveness and excitement I was missing during the race. Not all “good races” are enjoyable and I am frustrated that today I was not having “fun” in the race (except when seeing friends and family on the course). A friend said to me after “you can’t always hit a home run but triples and doubles are good too”. This was true and I am glad I cannot be labeled as a “one hit wonder” and instead a consistent marathon runner. Now with CIM being over I am ready to hit the trails/mountains and start planning for a big spring and summer

Other exciting news that cannot be over looked was the dominant performance by @runinrabbit. Three men in the top 10, Four men under the Olympic A-Standard (2:15), and the over all winner of the USATF Championship @brogan.austin

It was a special day today having all my college roommates from @thee_track_shack run the marathon (we averaged 2:27 no big deal!) @fox030 @adrianlsherrod @dbreezyy. Along with at least 13+ Chico State X-C alumni running the full 26.2 •
Thanks to all the family and friends that drove all around Sacramento this morning or watched on TV in Salt Lake City. @runsra_cim is home to me and I will be back at in the future.

Hit me with one or two facts (serious or funny because I like both) about yourself?
••
We have hundreds of you badass ladies on board the challenge and I’d love to know more about each of you.
••
What makes you tick? What excites you? What’s do you do for a living? What are your fears? What’s your favorite food? What’s your favorite exercise? What’s something no one would assume about you?
••
Even if you didn’t join the challenge - I encourage connection on this platform. Read through - comment back to someone. I swear I’ve met some of my best friends right here on instagram just from choosing to be OPEN to connection. And it’s required a level of vulnerability at times, but that’s such a beautiful trait especially when going through any health/fitness/mindset transformation.
••
This game wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t share something.....so here goes😬
••
I used to smoke. Like not on occasion but regularly/daily for about 5-6 years. High school and college. It was something I was highly embarrassed of so I would often try to hide it - but I was good at hiding it. From my mom, from my friends, from my teammates. (Or maybe I wasn’t 😂😂can’t wait to see the comments on this). It’s weird to even put it out here right now but I finally kicked the habit when I became a distance runner after college. Because..... well..... couldn’t breathe. And because... well.... terrible/gross habit.
••
Every time I tell someone this they obviously find it wildly surprising given my current life! Which is totally valid. But I’ve been pretty open about the fact that I used to live an unhealthy life.
••
And so when people talk about transformation photos - I always say - maybe my transformation photo doesn’t speak volumes - but my story does. The person I was 10 years ago is so polar opposite from who I am now.
••
Fitness and actually giving a F*** about my health has changed my life in so many ways. And it wasn’t until I started to APPRECIATE life a little more - and the gift it is - that I stopped treating myself like an asshole (in more than 1 way).
••
24 more hours to hop on board the 30 day #STRONGINFALL challenge. Link in bio!

It’s not fair how mature he’s already becoming! How grown up. Tonight was the first time I’ve taken him to a friends and just dropped him off and left. I was nervous all day long of how it would go. I pumped him up for it all day and prepped him. He kept saying “but you won’t be gone too long right?” I let him pack his back pack with snacks and toys and off we went.
Well he may as well just go off to college now because he gave me a kiss, said bye and walked right up those stairs with confidence.
At first I was kind of sad because wait a second! Don’t you need me anymore? But as I lay here thinking more about it... I realize how darn proud I am of him. How confident he is in who he is. How brave he has become. Hudson is seriously my idol. I want to learn to be as confident and brave as he is. I want to be as loving and kind as he is. And I definitely want to be as fun as he is!

Three or four miles at the same pace every day plus a few minutes of “abs.” Stuck to a low cal diet (except on the weekends 🍻🍫🍕). Consistency was not my issue; it was my method. I was consistently doing the wrong things. I saw strength training as difficult. I was intimidated by the male-dominated weight room. And of course, I didn’t want to get “bulky!”
.
I had the opportunity to train a female college student this summer (unusual because our club is 21+). I was so excited to train someone at such a pivotal point in her life — a time when many experience adulthood and independence for the first time, have to cook their own meals, etc. I saw this as an awesome chance to help a young adult reframe her perspective toward exercise, to see cardio as only one piece of the puzzle, to encourage her to use exercise as a fun way to live a healthy life.
.
Over the summer, we addressed her pain points, focused on her coordination and balance, and learned some basic strength training exercises. I tried to keep it all as simple and straightforward as possible. Macros, BMR, meal timing, optimal hypertrophy — none of these things were a part of our plan. It was so cool to see her grow stronger and more confident with the equipment and exercises as the summer progressed, and she’s excited to share what she’s learned with her friends back at school.
.
Sometimes, no matter our age, I think it’s easy to overcomplicate this fitness stuff. Training this client over the summer was a reminder to me that there is a time and place for data tracking and complex explanations and program design, but there are also many times and many places where this is not the most important part.
.
If you are feeling overwhelmed by how complicated all of this seems, take a step back. Take a breath. Prioritize strength training. Eat according to your goals. Be patient, and have fun!

My roommate, Gummy Bear, and sister Maggie has stuck by me through so much these past couple years. I cant believe it's been so long! It feels like just yesterday we were moving in together, and soon we're gonna be moving into our third dorm room! I'll never know how she puts up with me, but I'm grateful for it every day. I'm so proud of all she's accomplished this year and can't wait to see what the future has in store for her and us! There's no one else I'd rather go with through this crazy college journey... As for Chris, well, it's been a crazy nine months. From meeting, dating, being engaged, taking a break, and being engaged again, it's definitely been a rollercoaster, but it's been one of those fun ones that turns upside down and loops around. I'm so grateful to have him as another best friend and a life partner. Although we have a lot of stress in our lives, it's okay because we've always got each other's backs. .
As an athlete in high school and college, I thought that in order to have success, be happy and reach my goals, everything in my schedule had to have a “perfect” plan & purpose. I felt that if anything altered that plan, it would also alter the long term big goal that I was working so hard toward.
.
Every minute of every day of my college athlete life had a precise purpose- down to writing in my schedule the “perfect” time I would take a shower. (Literally.... @jamilo2 knows - she would make fun of me)
.
If anything altered my daily, “perfect” plan, I would feel major anxiety start to set in because to me, it felt like I lost the control of my day and like I was getting further away, not closer, to my “perfect” goals and results. I felt like I was unable to roll with the punches and go with the flow. As a college athlete, you REALLY lose sight of balance, and the minute by minute schedule is an over exaggeration of what it’s like in the “real world” once your college career is over.
.
Post-college, I learned I didn’t like that person I had become with little to no flexibility in making last minute decisions or schedule changes. It was engrained inside of me from before. It would not only make ME feel emotional, and at times rude and shut down, but it would effect others around me. I decided that I didn’t want a lack of “perfect” plans or a change in plans to ruin my mood or ruin the way in which I approached someone or a situation. I learned that changing my outlook, even just a tiny bit at first, made the situation feel so much better.
.
It started with small little changes in plans like changing up the restaurant we had picked to go to dinner, and then it grew to taking last minute vacations, like going to Cabo last week w/ @jen_schro. Some of my most favorite moments with friends and family have come from a last minute change in plans.
.
I’ve learned being spontaneous has so many perks to being perfectly structured. There is freedom and unrestraint in making changes to set plans to follow where your heart is at in that moment.
.
I used to think the only way things would work out is if they were planned & perfect. So not true.

A memory we would like to erase but its impermeability is absorbed into our essence, leaving a veritable scar. An experience, like many infamous American tragedies, that changes one’s perspective forever. DON’TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED. EVER
I was working and living in NYC at the time. I was an editor at a magazine located in midtown, my husband worked in 2 World Trade Center, 54th floor. We were still pretty fresh out of college—living to work, working to live—but mostly, just having fun. The morning of 9/11/01 I was called to jury duty in the court houses downtown across from the WTC. When cell phones began to ring in unison, I remember a sinking feeling and ran to the window. WT2 was on fire. Frantic, I immediately yelled to the proctor that I had to go, my husband and friends work in there. I ran through a sea of chaos to our apartment in the west village. I recall with total clarity, looking back at the Twin Towers from Washington Square Park and seeing a huge gaping hole in one of the towers, spewing smoke and fire, like an open wound. And then the other plane hit. It was at least an hour before any of us heard from my husband—he had left early that morning from Newark for work in Chicago but had been planning on coming home that night. 🙏🏻 There was only a moment of relief; I looked up at the television and witnessed both towers tumble to the ground.
We all have our stories from that day, some with happier endings than others. My favorite one being the sister of our editor in chief’s assistant. She worked in the World Trade Center and was taking a cigarette break outside on the sidewalk when the first plane hit. Almost everybody in her office perished (probably the only time a cigarette saved someone’s life).
We moved to London after the tragedy but 3 years later decided to put roots down in Princeton, New Jersey. One of the first people I met, who is now one of my closest friends, lost her husband in 9/11. Her scars, much deeper than mine. A reminder to NEVER forget. 🇺🇸 ❤️ When they began to allow onlookers to roam... cont’d captions 👇🏼

Since 4th grade we've been the best of friends. We grew up together, went through elementary, middle, high school and college together. Whether it was riding our bikes to each others houses as kids or driving to your dorm the hang out in college it was always fun being with him. I wish I knew this past Thursday would be the last time I saw him. I would've made him laugh one more time, hugged him one more time and told him I loved him one more time. He's made an impact on me, my friends, and my family. To this day they'd ask when sheu would come over to get more roti. Intentional or not he'd put a smile on anyone's face around him and he had the best energy. Eric Sheu was the brother I always asked my parents for and now I don't know what I'll do without him. I hope you don't have to deal with your demons anymore. Rest in peace Sheu, I'll see you on the other side.

Had a blast off trail in DC! Such a fun city, but I always seem to walk several miles on my zero days... My friends have been so supportive during this hike and that’s such a great feeling to have. They have been sending baked goods in care packages my parents have sent but now they sent a box on their own and it was so great! Thank you Amanda, Rodney, Megan, Savanah and Devin!

After finishing the 4 state challenge a hiking buddy who I hadn’t seen since the White Mountains picked me up and I crashed at his place for the night. That was some of the best tasting food and best sleep I’ve had after banging out a 40+ mile day. Forager, thanks again for everything.

Spent the day walking around DC going to the Smithsonian’s and other museums. Thanks for letting me sleep on your couch for two days and taking me to all the cool food places Jen. She took me out to eat and to an awesome museum my last night there, Artechouse; highly recommend to anyone going to DC!
Thank you Stephen for getting me back out to the trail after many trials and tribulations with the Metro and Amtrak. It was really good to see ya.

Coming out of DC I played the catch up game with MG as he was planning on going into Charlottesville to see college friends at UVA. Obviously wanting to stay in a college town I tried to catch him ASAP. Spent a day and a half in the city and it was great! He attempted Benny’s challenge; a 28 inch, 8lb pizza, in a hour! He’s been practicing for awhile and gave it hell but fell one piece and 10 minutes short.

Hiking through the Shenandoah’s has been nice. I forgot what mountains were after spending so much time in flatish states but they made themselves known again. There have been some really incredible views when the clouds have not been out. We just entered the Blue Ridge Parkway and the views have been just as spectacular.

Camping at Devils Backbone Brewery tonight. I can’t think of better mix of two things; beer and camping.

Crossing 1300 total miles, we finally have triple digits left to Georgia and that is a fantastic feeling! Crazy to think we’ve gone this far and only have 900 miles left.

We ran together @ucumberlands and had many other adventures together. Including going on bike rides at UC, staying with her in Cali a few days and surfing together, her coming with me to @alternate_routes back in 2013 when I was first getting into Ninja, me running the last mile or two with her in the #columbusmarathon and being amazed at her pace, helping her take down wallpaper (for her painting job), and so many more. So many awesome times together, and so excited this day has come!! 💞

I’ve gotten a lot of new followers recently and with my inclusive nature I’d like you to know me past the “Social Media Highlight Reel”. 10 things you didn’t know about me that will probably surprise you✌🏼
.
1️⃣ I graduated from UGA but have never gone to a football game as a student. It just was never a priority to me and all my friends are entrepreneurs who never went to college (or dropped out).
.
2️⃣ I spend my money on fun experiences and travel, not watches and belts. I believe real wealth is in the freedom to go and do whatever you want, not the brands I wear.
.
3️⃣ Halloween is close to my birthday, and every year since I was a kid I’ve had a big costume party. And I go ALL OUT. It’s probably my favorite day of the year 😈
.
4️⃣ My first 3 semesters of college I going down the “Pre-Dental” track. Then I read a booked titled Rich Dad Poor Dad. The next morning, I changed my major to online marketing and I never looked back.
.
5️⃣ When I was a kid my mom bartended in Atlanta. While she worked, I would play under the pool tables because smoke rises 🤣 There’s a joke in the family that “I’m the experiment that went right”.
.
6️⃣ I crave new adventures. Taking risks. Being spontaneous. Whether it to move to Silicon Valley to raise funding or booking a last minute trip to Africa, I’m always pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone.
.
7️⃣ The REAL reason I started my first company at 12 years old was to buy more Lava Lamps and Bean Bags from Spencer’s Gifts… But what kept me going was the independence to do what I wanted. (Btw, you shoulda seen that Lava Lamp collection…it was epic).
.
8️⃣ My biggest fear is to “make it big” and have no one to enjoy it with. Friendship is one of my most important values. My ultimate dream is to endlessly travel the world with all my closest friends.
.
9️⃣ My life is pretty polar. I work really hard (like working 12 hourdays everyday for weeks straight) then go on wild adventures & totally unplug.
.
🔟 Finally, I love advertising so much I fast forward through the Super Bowl game & only watch the commercials 😂
.
It’s important to me that I know YOU as well! So tell me one fun fact about yourself in the comments below 👇🏼

It’s probably going to feel like summer here in Dallas through October, and while I haven’t started indulging in any fall drinks/food/clothes yet - I know I will be soon!

September is shaping up to be such a fun month both for business and our personal life. I’m starting off this work week with something I’ve been eagerly anticipating: the first video call with the new artist’s mastermind I joined led by one of my all time favorite artists, @emily_jeffords (y’all can bet I freaked out when I got that acceptance email!!). I can’t wait to meet all of the other artists in our group!
.
I’ll also be traveling to Waco next week to teach a watercolor floral workshop at my friend @laylee_emadi_photography’s Next Level Retreat (so excited to visit @linenandcake for the first time when I’m there!!). And I have a handful of amazing new custom painting clients I’m working with this month, too - from a custom venue painting to a couple of calligraphy vows commissions, a few custom pet portraits, and a custom wedding crest & map! Aka, all of my favorite things to paint 👩🏻‍🎨
.
Then on the personal side, two of my very favorite people @kgiffear & @cantal45 are getting married next weekend, which is something I’ve been waiting for since basically my freshman year of college 😉 And, Zack and I are seeing @florenceandthemachine in concert at the end of the month - which has been one of our big bucket list items for a while!
.
So friends, what are you up to this month? What are you most looking forward to in September? Let me know in a comment below!

I've been needing to post some pictures from graduation for a while.
🎓
Finally graduated this past semester on December 15th! 👌 If you know me personally, you know how long it took me to finally finish school! Needless to say - better late than never. I definitely took my time, but got through it eventually. For as long as I can remember now its been school during the week and gigs on the weekend. Now its time to eventually switch gears to work during the week and gigs on the weekend. Haha. Between school and gigs I missed out on a lot of things including family events, birthdays, doing fun things with friends etc. However, I have always thanked God for allowing me to stay busy with work throughout college to help fund it entirely and allowing me to still have fun throughout the journey. College is a stressful thing for many, but the accomplishment of setting yourself up for a brighter future through the means of an education has been a great reward. Now continues the stress of finding a job! Shout-out to my friends and family for continuously pushing me to finish my education with all of their "Damn, you're still not done yet?!"
🙈
Another shout-out to also graduating DEBT-FREE. Graduating debt-free had always been my main goal since DAY 1.
💰
Fulfilling that goal has been one of my biggest accomplishments thus far which I'm super proud of!

If you follow me, you know I’m a fan of big thinking but breaking it all down into 2 year increments.

Anything longer is hard on the brain to be productive.

The world changes too much.
I run 3 successful small businesses with various product lines. There isn’t a single thing in college or MBA school that taught me to do what I do now. Why college when all information is free and accessible in an instant?

One answer: To learn how to think.
Choose teachers, not classes.
Choose interests, not majors.

Choose to do personal projects that have nothing to do with a grade, but make a difference to others.

I graduated college in Dec. 2004.
FB was released to the public in Feb.
2004.

Youtube came out Feb. 2005.

Twitter came out July 2006.

Instagram came out publicly about 2010.

There was no way to communicate with tens of thousands of people at one time, every day, like I do now.

There was no way to reach freelancers globally.

There was no way to work from home or on the road effectively.

There was no way to talk to anyone, anywhere, effectively with a text or FaceTime.

Guys…this era is the dream of generations!

Don’t get lost on the fun toys of Tech…look for ways to make it be productive AND fun. 😉

A time when the work (any work) is ushered with the speed of light practically compared to even 100 years ago.

Can you imagine life in your country in 1918?

A recent article reads, “Facebook admits that social media can be bad for you.” Why would Facebook publish that?
They didn’t.
It’s a lie by media looking for clicks.
Want to know it actually says?

FB newsroom: “The bad: In general, when people spend a lot of time passively consuming information — reading but not interacting with people — they report feeling worse afterward.”
“The good: On the other hand, actively interacting with people — especially sharing messages, posts and comments with close friends and reminiscing about past interactions — is linked to improvements in well-being.” Isn’t this true to life?
Social media is a mirror.

You’re in the game, sidelines, stands or not in the stadium. #nortonsdostuff #ruckuslist #entrepreneur

The guy on my back is Carlos. Carlos is one of my best friends in the world. I have been with this kid for about 9-10 years of my life. There hasn't been a day we didn't have fun when we go out on adventures or experience something new.We always plan on the next opportunity or adventure we want to experience. Even in college, I do not really feel like he's away. We always tell each other activities or events each of our school offers and share those moments together. Some of my friends from college get to know him and vice versa with his college friends knowing me. The people I have got to know at DC are maybe the coolest, funniest, chilliest, and maybe the toughest smash brawl people I have got to know. We can all thank Carlos for introducing me to these amazing people. Not going to lie he's pretty bad at telling jokes and sometimes I might refuse him to stop. But guess what,...... he's tells them anyway. 😃🔫. But I just wish the best for him and his future. This is one of your big steps in becoming 20. I know you are gonna use "TeamWork" and be successful in wherever you are going into. So Carlito Burrito Happy Birthday!

Spring 2014, in Hamilton Hall, I sought to have a private conversation with one of UNC’s most renowned professors about Christianity. His response, however, was less than private. He thought it would be fun to make it a public mockery instead. He never let me express my thoughts; rather, he taunted loudly, basking in the laughter of other undergraduates. I wasn’t offended or humiliated, as he probably hoped. But I was mad that he didn’t hear me out, disappointed that he didn’t care, & burdened that that would be the last word for many of the students there.

I left class that day, pledging that the conversation hadn’t finished. Not just the conversation between him and me, but the larger conversation between Christians and the college institution at large. Since that day, I’ve wanted the chance to finally speak into that conversation. So, this is my statement to him, to other skeptics, & most importantly, to all Christians in college. On that spring day in 2014, what the professor intended for evil, God used for good.

This book is my humble attempt to provide a resource that discusses the most relevant issues every Christian will likely face on campus—everything from wading through skepticism to understanding professorial claims; from dealing with doubt to discovering confidence; from finding community to cultivating a gospel identity.

As I look at the book, I have a lot of thanks to give. While I may have penned it, it was 100% a group effort.

First, thank you, God, for leading me to the school I never thought I’d attend, but to the one I needed to attend. This book is yours. Thank you, mom and dad, for your constant love & encouragement. Thank you, @notthepuritan & @bothpapasreturn, for your talent & wisdom in the editing process. Thank you, @bloomersooner, my stellar (& v patient) designer for an awesome cover. Thank you, @nnohling, @miles_oneill, & @pastorjdgreear for being incredible influences in my life throughout college. Finally, thank you to my friends & acquaintances in college. My shared experiences with you have been the grounds for this book.

My Dear COLLEGE you taught me many lessons which actually made me a person like nobody is.
You have given me what not but then may be i haven't used enough or may be i misused it. But then I guarantee that i'm not the same person as I was after my 12th standard. It is the place where i found my love , interest, passion i.e (PHOTOGRAPHY),nothing else. And when it comes to friends , I've got enough of good souls who may make fun of me, who may critisize me, who may argue with me , who may support me all the time but then finally everybody is unique and happy to have you guys in my life. May be i would have missed you guys if I haven't got admitted in this college. Some of the faculty were really helpful and friendly who understood my true potential. Further, there were lot of fests conducted all the way along 4years are truely amazing even though i haven't participated in much of the events. And then when it comes to college canteen, the food was honestly ok ok but not the best. Those moments when we used to spend lunch time in canteen was memorable but sometimes whole day or partial day. So finally to conclude those 1460 days were amazing because of GCTC.

Ps: I'm really thankful to what you have given me.
Hope my college reaches heights with the quality of study you provide and make sure every year some fests will be conducted. I wish very all the best to future aspirants who get admitted into gctc.

I will miss being surrounded by such amazing friends, classmates and teachers who made every single day at school enjoyable and fun. I have become a more grateful person as I have realised what a special school this was. I have grown to be a more mature and hardworking person. I have been inspired by my peers because they are such hardworking and dedicated people who have taught me so much and by my teachers who have not once stopped supporting and helping me. This school means so much to me as it has been my second home where I have grown up. I will cherish how well the school treated me personally and the opportunities I was given." - Emma

I had my Friday night all planned out. I was going to watch Ang Huling El Bimbo with my best friends since college. A perfect night to have fun and reminisce kasi yun daw ang effect ng play sabi sa mga review — nostalgia. Meanwhile, Kadayawan festival at super long weekend sa Davao and C told me he would climb that weekend. I didn’t know he was going to Manila that day. Surprise! His flight was delayed for 9 hours and they were rerouted to Iloilo and then Bacolod before reaching Manila kaya gabi na siya nakarating. Nasira ang plano ko to watch El Bimbo but my best friend totally understood why I had to leave them. “Kung ibang lalaki iyan, tatalakan talaga kita,” she said. “But it’s C. He is supposed to be your fairy tale come true so be the disney princess you’ve always wanted to be.”

Not just for me for my birthday, but also for my son last night celebrating a senior tradition at his school. So many feels, I think I have an emotional hangover today! And can we talk about these flowers? Gah, GORGEOUS! Birthdays for me are always a time of reflection. This past year has been huge in many ways. So much has changed and continues to change in my world, I am constantly reminding myself to go with the flow and to be open. Lessons keep coming. The first four months of 2018 have provided a lot of shake ups and challenges and changes. Also a lot of joy and love. From caring for my mother through a health crisis to watching my son in his final months of high school getting ready to go off to college, 2018 so far has been BIG. Throw in there my entry into the online dating world (love you, @bumble), running 3 businesses, and my daily struggle to manage my RA, and you’ve got one humdinger of a year so far. Can I get a vacation already? 😂 Life is never dull, it’s always changing and growing and flowing. Ups and downs, good times and bad, I’ve learned to welcome it all and to look for the blessings in every little thing. So here goes the final year of my forties my friends, let’s see what’s in store. I’m already planning the party for my 50th next year, and you are all invited! Cheers! #birthday #thisis49 #canwetalkabouttheseflowers

In a past life, I worked for the NFL + a PR company, but now I’m a full time writer (you might recognize some of my work in @coastal_living @frommers or @people!) From now until January, my Saturdays will be consumed with college football (the best season) and eating all the game day snacks I’ve pinned on Pinterest for the last 9 months. I am married to my best friend, @dmhanso, and our favorite thing to do is explore the world together (We are heading to Iceland, Germany + Africa this fall ✈️ ), go for sunset walks with our chocolate Labs Judy + Bill and tag each in funny dog memes on social media. I’m a firm believer that you can never have too many Sour Patch Kids, laughs, tequila-based cocktails or friends, but if I can hear you chewing just leave now 🗣So whether you’re new around here or have been around since day 1, say hello + tell me something about yourself 👋🏼

I haven’t shown myself here in a while - hope I don’t scare anyone away 😂 It always feels a little vulnerable to jump on here but I think it’s important. This feed is in no way real life. Loooots of styled finished design projects! But there’s a lot of real life happening behind these squares and every now and then a bit of it cracks through ☺️ Anyway, I’m Chelsea! I married my college sweetheart when we were 21/22. My wedding day felt like a quinceanera LOL! But marriage with him has been the grandest adventure and I legit get excited to see him at the end of every day. When we thought it would be fun to try out a kid, we got twins. And before they learned how to crawl we were pregnant again. After all the babies were born I felt like I was reborn myself! I had a useless degree in Kinesiology and had worked a lackluster job as a personal trainer. Suddenly I felt like I could do anything I wanted! (Something about those incredible little tots we had made me feel incredibly brave 🤷🏼‍♀️) And I wanted to design! I started refinishing furniture and working on our own home, then shifted focus to design work and learning the ins and outs of the necessary programs in my spare time. It’s taken years for me to build up the confidence to call myself a designer when asked my occupation, and it still sometimes makes me uncomfortable, like I haven’t earned the right. But I never shy away from a big job, no matter how much I’ll need to teach myself; learning and growing make me SO excited. And I never could have planned this - there’s no other path that could have brought me here other than the Lord, (I mean, you should have seen our apartment 10 years ago - yikes 😬Aesthetics was NOT a priority) I still pinch myself over the opportunities to do this work and am beyond humbled to get to share it here with you. All that to say, I just wanted to introduce myself to anyone new and tell you all I’m so grateful to share this part of life together with you. ❤️

.
On the real though, I’ve been thinking a lot about school lately. Specifically, dropping out of school. Totally kidding hahaha
.
What I’ve really been thinking about is how I balance school with the rest of my life. In high school, I can certifiably say I was obsessed with grades. I graduated with like a 105.6 GPA. That obsessed mindset carried over into my first 2 semesters of college, but I started to have conflicts about it. I wasn’t having a great time, I didn’t feel able to make time to work out, and I saw so many other college students having the time of their lives. The more time I spent staring at the pages of a textbook, the more I realized I wasn’t balancing anything... I was just studying and taking tests.
.
Finally my sophomore year something clicked. I spent half as much time studying, and I still got good grades. All because of the “marginal rate of return of time spent studying”. Essentially I found that after ~3 hours, the amount of benefit gained from continuing to study was so minimal that it was pointless to continue. So I didn’t.
.
The other side of the equation is something I’ve embraced called reverse prioritization. It’s the concept that studying should come last because you will study eventually. The reverse is not also true; if you push off working out until the end of the day, 9/10 times you will not work out. So work out first. Spend time on your passion. THEN study.
.
What I’ve just described may or may not sound like justified procrastination. Well, that’s exactly what it is. With one difference: rather than “avoiding” responsibilities, I intentionally push them off. I PLAN to procrastinate rather than allowing procrastination to take control. When you give yourself 3 hours to get something done, you will get it done in 3 hours. Is it stressful? Yes. But it’s a heck of a lot better to be stressed 3 hours than for 3 days.
.
And that’s how I balance fitness, friends, free-time, food, and fun as a 4th year mechanical engineering major. All that said, how do you personally balance everything? Comment below! I really do want to know and learn from you! #HeartOfALyon
