It has become apparent in the literature that although the primary focus in depression for example ... One of the big challenges I find with managing any psychiatric illness is identifying what neurotransmitter imbalance is ultimately to blame for that individuals emotional experience.
It has become apparent in the literature that although the primary focus in depression for example has been on serotonergic pathways, many patients with depression may not even have issues with serotonin which explains why administering a drug of this nature doesn’t work at all in almost 50% of cases and may make some patients worse.
I like to explain the web of neurochemical interconnections in the brain like a soup made by a chef. The chef may be highly renowned for his /her soup making skills but even still, not everyone will like the melange of flavors in front of them. Taste, remember is subjective.
Similarly, each persons neurochemical soup has a unique blend of flavors (determined by dosing of the same ingredients) that must be to that person’s “taste” if you will, for them to experience optimal mood/cognitive function, ultimately the best brain health to their taste.
Serotonin deficiency might be the cause of one persons depression but dopamine deficiency may the cause in another persons. If you give a serotonergic drug to the latter, they will be calmer for sure but they will often report “yes I feel a bit better, but I don’t feel “ME”, often they will experience a worsening of suicidal ideation/intent.
You’ll see in the instastory today where I posted snippets on the role of blood sugar management for brain health. It’s well worth a flick through!
It’s funny as I read the last few snaps I posted, I can’t help but recall all the times I would explain to people that I wasn’t looking for meat because I was on some diet for the gym; it was because everything in my body and brain was screaming at me to find MEAT! I needed to see the blood dripping out of it. I just needed MEAT!! Clearly it’s taken a good many decades for someone to be able to figure out why but maybe by posting these snippets, it might help someone out there identify a missing link for them so they get help sooner than I did 🙈

By eating a food that makes you “feel good”, feel good hormone levels, like serotonin and dopamine go up, temporarily distracting you a taking you out of the funk you’re in. The best way to avoid resorting to food as a feel good mechanism when you’re down, would be to replace the food with a healthier alternative.
Stop right now and make a list of the things in your life that give you long-term happiness. Try to list at least 5 things. When you’re done, come back.
When you’re feeling like you want to resort to emotional eating, pick an option from your list.
For a lot of people, the snacks, treats, and trigger foods only make them happy for a short period of time. After they’ve finished eating them, they look back and wish they never ate them in the first place.
Now put yourself in this scenario: You just got upset and resorted to emotional eating in order to feel better in the moment. How did you feel immediately after you stopped eating? How did you feel the next day? Next week?
Now, take a look at your long-term happiness list. After you did one of these things, how did you feel during, immediately after, the next day, and the next week? Now imagine yourself in 5 years. You’ve completely replaced your bad habit that gave you instant gratification, yet left you more unhappy, with something that gave you modest gratification, followed by long-term benefits.
Some great serotonin-boosting activities that provide long-term benefits to your mind and body include: visualization, motivational books and audiobooks, spiritual practices, meditation, journaling, painting, arts and other hobbies, social groups, community involvement, exercise, replacing trigger foods with tasty, health-conscious alternatives. When you give yourself a bigger purpose to focus on (ex: health, community, career and family goals), it’s easier to make smarter decisions under pressure, and focus on the bigger picture (long-term happiness), as opposed to short-term, impulsive satisfaction. #sunfitforlife #askcoachsavannah

Now don’t you want to always feel good and have control over your impulses.
Easiest way to balance yourself is through a proactive diet. Get away from vegetable oils because they aren’t giving you the healthiest fats for your brain. Stick with real butter , coconut, and olive oil ect!
Just eat as many different Whole Foods as you can. Learn to cook its fun!

Get it from Pu-erh Tea and fermented foods kimchi Kombucha ect.
Regulating sleep will help balance you out.

And of course my favorite. EXERCISE nothing better then learning to naturally release these hormones. I mean if your gunna be rewarded with all these feel good hormones it should be from a nice exercise not eating a cookie 😝. The gut is connected to the brain via the vagus nerve, the enteric nervous system, and the gut-brain axis. The vagus nerve extends from the brain stem down into the neck, thorax, and abdomen. The vagus nerve supplies motor parasympathetic fibers to all organs except adrenal glands, all the way down to the second segment of the transverse colon. It helps regulate heart rate, speech and sweating as well as various gastrointestinal functions.

The enteric nervous system connects with the central nervous system. It contains 200-600 million neurons. The enteric nervous system has been deems the “second brain” because of its ability to operate autonomously and communicate with the central nervous systems.
The gut brain axis consists of bidirectional communication between the central and the enteric nervous system, linking emotional and cognitive centers of the brain with peripheral intestinal functions.

Although I do love posing for photos for a quick serotonin and dopamine boost; and meditate at very least 20 mins a day because mental health is just as important as my physical being. More on that at a later time.......

I know it sounds silly to say that in 3 days I’m physically healthier, but it’s true.
The best markers of good health are digestion, skin quality, mood, sex drive, sleep and breathing.
If each of these are perfect then you’re going to experience awesome gains and just feel so much better!

What I find crazy is that so few people actually know how they should feel. Like literally 5% of people who I coach (who are already in the top 0.01% of society for health) do 3 bowel movements per day - the optimal number.
Most people also accept skin breakouts as a regular occurrence and nothing to think of - rather than a symptom of leaky gut, dysbiosis and an unhappy liver.
Hardly anyone recognised that only wanting sex 2-3 times a week isn’t normal. We are literally hard wired to bang (our only real biological purpose is to reproduce and spread our genetics) and I consider wanting to have a Ronnie Coote anything less than twice a day to be sub optimal and generally a sign of poor GABA, serotonin, adrenaline or dopamine.

And the last two, sleep and breathing, are huge. When you don’t sleep well or feel short of breath your body is really pissed at you. A really cool effect our nervous system has on us is it’s ability to keep us awake and functioning. If we are injured we are more vulnerable, which means we need to be more vigilant. The nervous system then stops us sleeping and makes us breathe in a more shallow manner.
So do you consider yourself healthy now?

Don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to be about to drop dead. But if you don’t tick all the boxes you’re far from optimal!

We don’t have to wake up everyday at 5 am. Stick to YOUR time. If anything is in the way of my workout I’ll do what’s needed. If this means getting my ass up at 5 ... I get up. For many of us that don’t have time later in the day with other responsibilities, getting it out of the way first thing in the morning is best.

We all have the same hours in the day. sometimes it seems impossible to get everything done. Focus on prioritizing. What’s really important to you right NOW? What’s going to make you start feeling better and have an amazing day?

Be obsessed about anything that makes you feel alive.


Exercise slows cell aging. Exercise doesn't just make you feel younger—it may actually turn off the aging process in your chromosomes. It has to do with telomeres, the caps at the end of chromosomes that control aging. Telomeres become shorter as you get older, and longer telomeres are associated with longevity.

Stressed ? Brain fog ? Overwhelmed? Depressed ? Angry ? Always tired ?

Most seasoned exercisers know how to get back on track, but for those of you either sedentary or looking to start a fitness and “weightloss” journey here are some tips 👇👇👇

1, Don’t beat yourself up about the past, hindsight is good for a moment to help make better decisions, but don’t dwell on it 🤯🤯

2, Make Small changes to start with, maybe look at doing a 20 minute brisk walk each day, which can eventually turn into some interval jogs (30 secs running 60 secs walking), which then turn into a 5km jog eventually 🏃🏃‍♂️

3, Pick activities you enjoy, then its doesn’t feel like a task, and the feel good hormones (serotonin, dopamine, endorphins) released will further help your wellbeing and even your results 💃💃

4, Look at making small nutritional changes week by week, eat less refined products (refined flour, refined sugar, refined fats) and eat more fiberous food and fresh produces (fruits/vegetables/meats etc etc) 🥝🍑🍉

5, Look for small wins, it’s not always about fatloss, are you feeling more energetic? Are you moving better? Are you more productive at work? Are you making better lifestyle choices? As a fitness professional myself I find we often get more satisfaction from these “wins” than just the fatloss 💆🏽‍♂️💆🏽‍♂️

6, Look at hiring a fitness professional (not me as I don’t want anymore clients, but I can point you in the right direction haha). They can analyze your background and current situation and create a manageable plan which will get you into the agreed (between you and the trainer) healthy person you want to be 🏅🏅

But one thing I have always been able to do is laugh at myself. My parents always told me that you can’t take yourself or all situations so seriously. In days I feel stressed, I sometimes take useless situations seriously, either placing the blame on myself or searching for the answer of “why me” ... but in most cases, I do my very best to just laugh at myself.

I remember learning in Positive Psychology that “forcing a smile and/or laugh spurs a chemical reaction in the brain, releasing certain hormones including dopamine and serotonin. ✨Dopamine increases our feelings of happiness. ✨Serotonin release is associated with reduced stress.

I’m a man of my word.⠀

This is me, with my shirt off on the cover of @menshealthau, and I’m the first plant-based person to do so in Australia. ⠀

Over ten weeks I lost 9kg of fat and gained 2.5kg of muscle by eating nothing but plants and training every day until I was a flat pancake on the gym floor. ⠀

I started this #MHtransformation as a way to help me manage life off of meds. ⠀
I hadn't been on antipsychotics for about 18 months before I started this.
I'd shifted to a different medication for the OCD, however as I got better and better, the side effects now became more prominent than the symptoms - so me and my Dr decided to try life without them.
Coming off meds in Dec meant that I needed to put management strategies in the place where they once were, I needed things to help me regulate my emotions and emotional responses - and resistance training was a large part of that. ⠀

I was grateful to train every day with @chiefbrabon and @emiliebrabonhames. ⠀

I pushed my body until it released those feel-good hormones: the 4 horsemen of endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. ⠀

Like a good mental health patient, I kept checking in with my psychiatrist - and as the months passed, our med-free experiment carried on.⠀

It’s now 7 months off meds, and I’m still under Dr's supervision because there’s a difference between not taking meds and not NEEDING to take meds. ⠀

To keep it that way, resistance training is something I do almost every single day. I ride my bike almost every single day. I eat with purpose and consideration every single day. ⠀

Sure it takes time, but that’s an investment in my health but more importantly in the quality of my relationships at home and at work. ⠀

You know that 30mins before you leave your apartment for a date? Deciding to do things that don’t really matter like watering your plants or talking to your cat? Or is it just me? Am I the only one that gets nervous when about to sit to a meal with a potential future holder of my heart? That nervousness in your gut, we call it butterflies; Your stomach reacts with flutters because just like your brain that is susceptible to neurotransmitters under stress, your belly is just the same.
The gut does more for us than just digest. It is often referred to as our second brain;Yes you heard me right, there is a brain in your belly. Most people are only aware of the cluster of nerve cells in our heads, but there is, “an often-overlooked network of neurons lining our guts that is so extensive some scientists have nicknamed it our ‘second brain’”; In fact, “the gut contains 100 million neurons - more than the spinal cord has”. This is important to note because just like the ones atop that make up our mind, these nerve cells below in our belly are susceptible to neurotransmitters - the chemicals that affect our functions, feelings and behavior;In fact, "it is estimated that 90 percent of the body's serotonin is made in the digestive tract". There is no thought or decision making being done in your gut; Your belly is not going to solve a calculus problem, it is just a system of neurons that like those in the brain are influenced by neurotransmitters. As a result, for good health and happiness, it is imperative to establish a healthy inner ecosystem.

I have posted some snippets from one of my absolute favorite general public books on the brain entitled Why Isn’t my Brain Working by Datis Kharrazian. I have sent many copies to clients of mine and highly recommend reading it, especially if you suffer from mood disturbances, brain fog, poor energy (remember energy and conversely fatigue is more of an emotional state than anything else).
I posted today on Dopamine deficiency/poor dopamine activity. As I’ve said many times before, the biochemical imbalance causing one persons mood disturbance like depression often differs from another person. So treating ALL patients who fulfill the DSM criteria for Depression with the same first line protocol (SSRI/psychotherapy) simply doesn’t make scientific sense (as is evidenced by the poor efficacy of SSRIs when compared with placebo in clinical trials).
As you’ll see in the instastory, there are subtle differences in symptoms and signs in one whose depression/mood disturbance is related to poor dopamine activity vs poor serotonin activity.
This is precisely why we, as clinicians or practitioners, must be skilled in thorough history taking (and allow sufficient TIME to listen and HEAR the client/patient).

The brain:
Our brains are made up of billions of neurons that are constantly communicating with each other via chemicals called neurotransmitters.
The limbic system is the part of the brain responsible for emotion and contains many different pathways- think of them like motorways.
One is called the reward pathway that makes a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine is needed to help us get up and get on with the day - it’s often high in go-getters and those that have good focus levels. Dopamine is also responsible for feelings of motivation and reward, and is stimulated by the perception of pleasure from things such as shopping, alcohol, social media likes, caffeine and sugar. These substances can have the same effect morphine and heroin do, and generate the feeling of pleasure or bliss.

Secondly is the contentment pathway. A part of the brain which contains neurons that produce serotonin- the neurotransmitter which is responsible for contentment and happiness. This hormone also helps us process experiences and decide whether they were positive or negative.
We need both, but issues arise when these neurotransmitters are out of balance. In the world that we live in we are so often trying to stimulate dopamine and a feeling of pleasure, which can lead to addictive behaviours and a lack of satisfaction and genuine happiness.
Interestingly around 70% of serotonin, which can help balance dopamine out is made in the gut. So one of the first things that we can do so support our brain health is to support our gut and reduce the stimulants. Fibre, pre and pro biotic foods, omega 3 and antioxidants are a few ways that we can start to support the body and mind.
Tryptophan is an amino acid needed as a building block to help make serotonin can be found in eggs, salmon, chicken, turkey, cashew nuts and pumpkin seeds.
This can be hard for many of us, but slowing down and getting enough rest is a really important way to help support these brain chemicals.
