Okay it’s time for the real.

Often times I hear people say illness run in their family or it’s genetic.
While this may be true to an extent.

Most people severely underestimate the impact of their diet has on their health.
For example a person will say heart disease runs in my family.
But then you look at what they eat and it consists of foods like cheeseburgers, hot wings pasta, ice cream and any other junk you can think of.

You see where I’m going with this. These are high fat, highly inflammatory foods that you already know cause heart disease.
Yes generics may play a role in your susceptibility to illness but I’m just gone keep it real with you.

It’s your diet.

If 80% of the foods you eat have been proven to cause an illness. The likely hood of you getting that illness increases genetics or not.

It’s the weirdest thing people really have food amnesia sometimes.
Person will eat everything piece of junk under the sun and then blame genetics for weight or illness.
Stop living in denial.
Wake up to the reality you can’t eat foods high in everything that has been proven to kill you and expect to have a healthy body.
For my people who want to live a healthy lifestyle the first step to making the change is becoming aware of the fact that what you eat actually affects your body.
And stop making excuses when you already know what you need to do.
You owe it yourself to recognize habits that are harming you and stop them.

Sooo much about my life changed in the last eight months. I decided to chase my dreams and change careers, moved to boonies to buy a house 🏡 and have been nursing a torn labrum in my hip. I may have been my leanest and felt confident physically but from a mental health standpoint I was miserable 😖 and dissatisfied trying to continue following competitive #crossfit training.
I soon realized that being happy 😃 and trying to meet those old expectations while working a sedentary but much more mentally and emotionally draining position was just not possible. I also found that my sedentary job made my hip pain incredibly more present. I made a tough choice to #surrender and make the switch to #olympiclifting 🏋🏽‍♀️
I have to be honest, even being an #etp nutrition advisor, I had that fear in the back of my mind that I’d gain back the weight I lost and be disappointed w/ myself. Once I fell in love with my programming, I decided to only track #macros when I needed to verify I was eating enough, only weigh myself occasionally and to solely focus on the outcome of my performance. Changing my mindset back to being performance based and away from needing to be that exact weight gave me such freedom and I’m truly enjoying #fitness again. Scrolling through a video the other day, this bad boy popped up and I realized that even though my body composition has changed significantly, SURPRISE, just being an #olympiclifter doesn’t make you #fat.
I say all this to say the battle is usually more mental than it ever is physical. Your mind will quit on you long before your body. Trust the process. Stay out of your head. Surround yourself w/ empowering people. Use your people to keep you centered. Always do your best. Work hard and pray harder.

Motivation is a fickle little emotional thing that comes and goes. Instead of solely relying on motivation, rely on your grit and perseverance. That will help you to put in the work when you’re not “motivated”.

Grit your teeth and GO. Don’t stop until you’ve achieved your goal.

Tell yourself you’re the kind of person that DOES and BELIEFS that which moves you towards your goals. Making that change in identity will do more for you than any motivational video ever will.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes short term bursts of motivation can be good. But long term, you need grit and perseverance. Not motivation.

Good – Eating Whole Foods
In its purest form, the paleo diet has adherents eating strictly whole, unprocessed foods. Pretty much any meats and veggies are fair game, as well as nuts, seeds and natural oils. These foods are the basis of any good diet! Eating this way, it’s hard NOT to get plenty of protein, healthy fats and vitamins and minerals.
Bad – Fear of Carbs
According to most Paleo experts, any and all grains should be avoided. Their rationale is that humans haven’t evolved much since the dawn of agriculture, and our bodies weren’t made to handle the starch and other nutrients present in wheat, oats, barley and other mass-produced crops. This idea isn’t just lacking scientific backing – it’s actually detrimental to athletic performance.
Grains serve as our main sources of carbohydrates, the fuel any lifter needs for intense, heavy workouts. Sweet potatoes and fruits are allowed on the Paleo diet, sure, but it’s tough to eat them in the quantities we really need for peak performance.
Making matters worse is many Paleo dieters’ fear of carbs, even those allowed on the diet. High-fat, low-carb diets are common in the Paleo community, and while they can help some people lose weight, they’re not going to fuel intense workouts. Bcuz I always believe when you work hard, the progression juz kicks in naturally. I remembered when I used to get questions on how I got myself lean & fit, it was a tough one to answer bcuz it did not felt difficult at all. I think consistency is key? It means I can't eat 🍟🥙🌮🌯🍲🍜🍝🥘🍪🍫🍰🍪🍭🎂 whenever I want and usually stuck eating 🥗. But I know it's worth it. I know although I don't enjoy it now...Imma enjoy the heck out of the fruits of discipline (GOOD BYE MOOBS AND 🎅🏻 BELLY). Can't escape the FatLands without a plan and the conviction to keep running away from 🍩, 🍦, and 🥓 (yes I know everything in moderation one day...but that day ain't today and I have a feeling it ain't tomorrow neither). For those that are on your own fitness journey, keep it up! Don't quit! Keep pushin! We have our tough days and the days we don't wanna go to the gym and just wanna shove our faces into some mint chocolate chip ice cream cake with extra cherries and chocolate syrup (OK...maybe that's just me...) but don't. Find yourself someone who can keep you accountable and get your 🍑 to the gym and eating healthy fuel for that scrumptious body of yours!

Let's stop these thoughts! 🙅🏼 Something that has helped me immensely is my fitness community. The fact that people are able to reach out and relate makes this battle feel a lot less lonely. I was trying so hard to get back into shape and a routine on my own until I realized what worked for me in the past isn't necessarily will work for me now. And despite my constant dismissing of Beachbody programs, I decided to give it a try with 80 Day Obsession. I have to say I feel completely ridiculous for neglecting what an amazing resource they are. The workouts are so much fun and the community is so encouraging! I am excited to start a 21 Day Fix group of my own with my girl @kfit_klife starting June 11th! If anyone would like to join us, let me know! I'm happy for the opportunity to talk and pay forward the strength that others gave me when I needed it. Anywho, happy Sunday friends ❤️

9 months ago today I moved from all that I knew to be “my normal.” I knew it would be tough, but I’ve done it before. 🤷🏽‍♀️ How hard could it be? 🙄 At times I felt like I was standing in a room filled with hundreds of people screaming at the top of my lungs for help yet no one could hear me. Who am I outside of Las Vegas, NV? Who am I if I’m not competing in fitness competitions? Who am I when my friends I once had don’t return my text and phone calls? Who am I when I’m short on rent this month and have to ask my Mom for a loan when I’m 35 years old (thank you, Mom 😘)? WHO AM I???

I am perfect with all my imperfections. I’m still Stephanie “Coco” Brewster whether I’m in Las Vegas, NV or Chandler, AZ. I’m still a Fitness and Figure Pro even when I’m not holding onto 10% body fat. I’m still a great friend to the new people who I’ve created space for in my life. I’m still human when I have to ask Mom and Dad for help.
I AM STILL ENOUGH! Something I constantly have to remind myself of and ironically someone I didn’t even know reminded me of that just about three short weeks ago and tonight I got to celebrate that awakening feeling with some new friends. Thank you for reminding me of something that I already knew!

Embarrassed with the left side of the picture, I sent it to a few friends and my mom completely disgusted with how out of hand it got on the left. But not one person I sent it to agreed that I was ever truly “fat” on the left. They all were so positive and uplifting. It made me realize that the only person being hard on myself was ME!
God made everyone different for a purpose and we should love ourselves no matter what we look like or what we are given. Our God makes no mistakes. It’s 100% okay to want to be healthier and feel better in your own skin. Which is why I am happier with where I’m at today. I only wish I wouldn’t have been so tough on myself during the stage of my life where I was in the left side.
Self love is so important and I hope y’all take the time today to notice and tell yourself a few things that you love about yourselves.

Just goofing around having some fun in the off-season. 💪🤪 I love this sport because it's mentally and physically tough and demanding on the body, but at the same time it's art, aesthetics and science. When i first started i was 128 lbs back in 2011. Since then i've gone up to 200lbs and now sitting pretty at 177lbs. It's a humbling experience to have been every level of whatever shape i've been in. Ive been skinny, skinnyfat,fat and shredded. But through it all I've learned to just enjoy the journey and to trust the process. Eat a lot of clean food, lift heavy weights. Train smart. Leave the ego at the door, Rest your body and drink a lot of water!

4) having a plan in place helps diet adherence for many. Whatever your plan is, simply having one so you're not winging should help

Nooooo problem, today is a new day. You enjoyed yourself? So what. You drank yourself to death? So what. You ate too much? SO WHAT. Start over. No excuses, just straight back to it. Straight back to achieving your goals. Re-centre yourself and remind yourself that you CAN reach your goals, you DO have the willpower to do this, this week WILL be different, no ‘ors’, ‘ifs’, ‘hows’, or ‘buts’ about it. You have to change your mindset and begin to believe in yourself because it all starts with YOU.

1️⃣Its Monday, I get it, you can’t be assed getting to the gym. Time for a bit of self-love and tough love - get your ass to the gym. No excuses, no whining, go. Get it done. I promise you will feel 10x better after you’ve sweated out that weekend of regret😂 don’t be doing endless hours of cardio to make up for it though, this just adds unnecessary stress onto the body, making you more likely to store fat.

2️⃣Back to your regular eating routine, DO NOT CUT YOUR CALORIES. I’ll repeat that for all the people in the back - DO NOT CUT YOUR CALORIES. You do not need to restrict yourself further from your already-established calorie goal (if you have one). There is no need, I feel like this just establishes an unhealthy relationship with food and does virtually nothing to rectify the surplus that you may be in as it is so short term anyway.

3️⃣Drink lots of water, cheat meals/days make us retain water due to the sodium/sugar content in the foods that we’ve consumed, so you have definitely not put on half a stone as the scale says. Refrain from weighing yourself for a couple of days, the sad step is gonna do just that - make you sad.

Haven’t really thought about competing this season, although it has been tempting. 💃🏼🧐 Life has just been moving in such a better place right now. I like focusing on more athletic-based workouts, doing crazy, new ish that excites me. And I think I’m on the right track as far as diet for me, at the moment. High fat has been going well, with carb refeed on the weekend. 👌🏼And, I love that I have found happiness again in being myself. 😜 I feel like I’m tightening up, losing weight at a slow pace 🐌 so I’m not shocking my body again this time around. Competing is a fun challenge, but I don’t want to put my body in that aggressive state to reach my goals. If my body ever naturally reaches and maintains a figure that is appropriate to compete with, then I’ll consider it. 😈

My goal has been, and is, always to maintain a lifestyle and a physique that I’m comfortable and happy in. Yo-yo’ing weight was tough on my body, and now I feel like it’s finally bouncing back. 🙏🏼 Just remember, weight loss takes time, patience, and no short cuts. Especially when you want to maintain that loss for life. It takes practice and consistency to incorporate healthy habits into your lifestyle. And then you need to make the a part of your lifestyle. Which means every day. Not just days you feel guilty, or times when you want to cut quickly for an occasion. If you want it to be lasting, it has to be habits you can live with, and execute, every day. You’ve got what it takes, you just have to find what works WITH you. 💪🏼✨❤️

Here’s the Stats 📈
I have increased my calories by 861 over the course of 17 weeks, I have had about 4 weeks where I wasn't actively trying to increase my targets as I was travelling, I knew I would be exercising less and out of routine so I stayed at maintenance. I also had 2 weeks where I probably messed up and ate in a calorie surplus of about 250 kcals per day, which lead to a rapid 2kg weight increase. This highlights the importance of being consistent with your targets, whether it’s fat loss your after or reverse dieting. If you exceed your calorie targets when you are sitting at your ‘metabolic threshold’, this is when you are most likely to gain weight. The same can be said when your metabolism is highly suppressed.

I estimate that over the 17 weeks I have probably gained about ~3.65 kg FM, and decreased my LBM by ~1.35kg. Who knows, I could be wrong and my LBM has remained unchanged 🤷🏼‍♀️ This would make more sense as I was able to get pretty strong while I was training for my powerlifting meet, and losing lean muscle doesn't quite align with my significant increase in strength. Perhaps I'm being to tough on myself ? What do you think looking at my images? As I say to my clients, we are out own worst critic.

Im so pleased I took the time to do this reverse diet as it has 100% set me up for a really successful diet phase as the WBFF Fitness Diva show in November approaches. I wont have to take my calorie as low, and if I do, Ill have made leaps and bounds on my 2016 contest physique form.

My goal was to get healthy, happy, light at my feet, full of energy, to lose all the excess body fat, so I could feel like me again, going from 103 kg (after giving birth to my three kids) to 65 kg. The biggest part of my goal was an inside job, finding light, fighting my way through depression hell, creating a life that felt good for me, no matter the tough circumstances of being in a foreign country, as a single mother to three. Proud of myself for not fucking up my diet over a week-long convention & still crushing my activity goals almost the whole week too. I've been focusing my gluteus medius more than maximus to help round out the top booty & get more of a bubble but - TURN AROUND SHAKE IT OUT SHOW THE WORLD YOU GOT A 🔮🍑😂 I workout 4-5x a week with the help of @smartgymapp & started training at @lafitness w/ @callends. I've changed my diet to almost full vegan (slowly cutting cheese out of my diet rip my one true love 🧀❤️😭), I follow my macros 30-30% protein and fats & 40% carbs with the help of @livestrong_com app My plate. I stay at or under 1,400 calories a day minus maybe one cheat meal a week. It gets easier once your body gets used to cutting out sweets/fried stuff/less calories and your stomach starts to shrink. I drink TONS of water or @lacroixwater 😋 and eat lots of high-protein, low-carb veggies to help fill me up and I never feel like getting overly stuffed like I did before!

So proud of this progress & addicted to the results. The road back down to 20% bodyfat will be tough (haven't been there since my yoga teaching/competitive swimming days), but with encouragement & will power, I know I can hit that goal. May the gains be with you & happy Friday! 💪🍑

Being accused of ‘did u get the fat cut off’ and ‘she had lipo’ along with ‘she had surgery, she cheated’ and my personal favourite ‘she was better when she was a hippo tbh’ was mentally really hard for me to sit there and read such negative comments especially while recovering from major surgery . I will always be an advocate for healthy eating and exercise and will never hide the fact that I had a gastric bypass (incisions on the left) which lead to such rapid weight loss that required a tummy tuck (incision on the right)".

I learned so much about myself these last 100 days. I learned what a hard worker/how dedicated I can be, and how much effort I can put into something if I REALLY try. When things get tough, I keep pushing and never give up. That is something I have learned to really love about myself. All of the workouts, meal preps, and daily busting my @$$ has been so worth it for how amazing I feel. Balancing school/studying + work + gym was a challenge at times, but if you REAALLLLLYY want something, nothing comes in your way. There is nothing like a dream to create the future, and I am so happy to be creating a future I can honestly say I’m proud of.

I couldn’t fit clothes and my definition of health and fitness was lost. I battled with depression as well from deaths on both sides of my family (4 deaths in 1 week). I was eating everything in sight and covered it up with big clothes until I couldn’t fit those big clothes .I became self conscious of my body,especially since I’m in the industry of fitness! I was the guy helping others get in shape while I deteriorated .I got back into it with the help of people like my wife who always loves me Unconditionally my daughter and @ssplevi who took me back to the basics spiritually and physically. Pray and lift was our ritual...I changed 70% of my eating habits while still enjoying @bravasfood with my family with no regrets and did stuff that was fun like clean and jerks. I honor God with my lifts and have fun doing it,It’s more meaningful for me that way. This is tough as often the after after is neglected (either with a coach or going solo) and severe methods are used during the diet stage without any sort of 'get out plan'⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I believe that you need to start coaching lifestyle and habits from the get-go and if more severe methods are used to drop fat rapidly then a supervised consolidation phase is essential. The issue with this is that it is perceived as extra cost and time for no 'gain' however it's far better to do it once and do it right then bounce around from shredded to overweight between diets⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Is that really me?! 🤗 Honestly, there's no secret workout. No "lose fat in 6-week program". No magic pill. No special diet. I'm just like you. I have a busy job/life and I love to eat! I still eat noodles, rice, pizza, burgers, donuts, ice cream and all that good stuff in moderation! I've had ... Is that really me?! 😱😱😱🤗 Honestly, there's no secret workout. No "lose fat in 6-week program". No magic pill. No special diet. I'm just like you. I have a busy job/life and I love to eat! I still eat noodles, rice, pizza, burgers, donuts, ice cream and all that good stuff in moderation! I've had multiple injuries this year, one of which I injured my back so bad, I had to use a walker for 3 full days. With injuries I had to miss workouts from anywhere between 2 weeks to a month. But I always got back into it as soon as I healed. My biggest advice is don't give up and keep moving!

Huge shoutout to @annephung for pushing me past my limits! I'm so blessed to have her as my trainer/friend. Can't wait for Tough Mudder together! 😙

My fitness journey isn’t perfect.

People don’t think I struggle just because I love health and fitness. I do struggle a lot especially since I have PCOS, Lynch syndrome, and endometriosis.

Some people will use it as a crutch or excuse as to why they gain weight but then, if you know you already have some conditions that make you do that - you can take control of what you eat and what you do. It’s not like you just get fat overnight. It’s your habits that will get you fat and overweight. This is why I need to make that conscious effort to take control on a daily basis.

Given that, I need to work harder than most to get results that I want or to even simply maintain. Sometimes I think it’s unfair that I don’t have it easy compared to most but then again, victory isn’t as sweet if it all came easy to me. I struggle because I’m not always emotionally “happy and perfect” and yes, I do get lazy. 🤮
There’s always room for improvement in my journey. I also tend to get extremely disgusted with myself that I’m not always 100% but then again, it reminds me that I need to show myself a bit more compassion.❤️ This health journey is all about learning and growing every single day. It’s not about being perfect but it’s more so about being better than you were yesterday. This journey will have setbacks but it’s up to us to rise above those setbacks. This journey isn’t about comparing ourselves to others because that’s just a waste of time and energy.

Yes, it’s tough but it’s so worth growing through it. Why? Because we are worth it. ❤️🙏🏻

To drink or not to drink. Let’s face the facts first:
- alcohol has calories
- alcohol is a toxin
- alcohol can make you hungry (science based fact, not just lowered inhibitions)
Now these are the reasons why it can be a slippery slope for weight gain and lack of weight loss. Obviously the drink calories can add up, toxins are tough on the body as your body will prioritize processing/metabolizing toxins over fat and well pizza when drunk is awesome BUT there are ways to drink more responsibly when it comes to your fitness goals:
- make smart alcohol choices! Stick to clear hard liquor (vodka and tequila are good options) and say no to mixed cocktails and sugary drinks. Mix with water or soda water, tonic has added sugar FYI - don’t drink too regularly aka plan an evening once every other week or so. I personally find it doesn’t affect my progress if it doesn’t slip it’s way into every dinner out or patio lunch
- track your drink calories. This one is tricky as alcohol is an empty calorie. I’d rather you eat your normal meals that have nutritional value than starve and drink all day. It’s obvious to see this isn’t the best choice for adding alcohol into your life lol
So to drink or not to drink alcohol? For me I’d rather have balance in my life than fully restrict something I enjoy. IF I was really serious about losing body fat I would likely drink very rarely and strategically. IF I was in contest prep I personally wouldn’t drink the last few months so I can have as healthy a prep as possible and not have to drastically lower my cals to get stage lean. IF you are in maintenance or a building stage you can be a bit more lenient. Long story short, you can still be fit and drink alcohol. It’s a personal choice and balance is key. Like anything else just be smart about it! 🍸🍾🍷🥂let me know your thoughts below & your poison of choice, I’m a vodka soda girl!

Fruits are filled with vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants to help the body function properly. Most fruits have a high water content to keep us hydrated and give us natural energy. Do yourself a favor and eat 2-3 fruits a day. My personal favorites are bananas, kiwis, pineapples and blueberries.

Leafy greens!! Ewww, but I hate greens. Well, you better blend them up in a smoothie and get to drinking. Hahaha, tough love! Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and chard are packed with tons of vitamin A, C, B-6 and Calcium. I like to drink one green smoothie a day for energy and to get rid of any sugar or junk food cravings. It works like a charm.

Nuts: I never was fan of nuts growing up until now. They are the healthy kind of fat your body needs to function. Most nuts are high in vitamin E, magnesium, protein and iron. Most American seem to be deficient in magnesium which helps with sleep and iron which gives you energy preventing fatigue. My favorite nuts are cashews because they are sweet and brazil nuts because they taste like cheese.

This before and after was 8 weeks on my TRUE Training System and Nutrition plan. Now before you think “oh I can do that plan and lose belly fat” let’s get something perfectly clear—-> you cannot target certain areas of fat on your body

The truth is that your genetics will determine your “trouble spots” when it comes to bodyfat. It’s annoying as hell, but it is what it is. It’s like zombies on the Walking Dead. They aint going nowhere

The best strategy is focusing on long term fat loss and slowly chipping away at the fat you’re carrying one day at a time. Eventually the tough spots will start to lean down. Or you may get lucky and find that your body loses fat fast in the areas you’re looking to trim up

A moderate calorie deficit, a huge focus on healthy food, improving your gut health, drinking plenty of water, and training smart will lead to a lean, chiseled, healthy AF body that looks, feels and performs like a savage in all areas of life

What I meant was that when I am not tracking my intake (I.e. eating intuitively) and get stressed, tired or anxious, I make poor food choices and eat more food. Food causes fat gain. Stress causes me to eat more of it.

Conversely, stress or cortisol don't stop you from losing fat if you are dieting. They just may make a diet more difficult to stick to. When I was competing I was the most stressed person in the world juggling a million and one things, not sleeping and working nights, days and all the hours in between and still got shredded. That's because I was controlling and tracking my intake and energy expenditure and the calorie deficit was maintained. It was really fucking hard but undeniably possible

I will repeat. Cortisol or stress do not stop fat loss or cause fat gain. Excess calories do

If you are trying to diet while stressed or lacking sleep then it can be tough... like hammering a square peg into a round hole.... you'll get it through with enough effort but it's not ideal
.
Having too much or too little of certain hormones like cortisol, insulin, thyroxine or whatever can make life more difficult for fat loss and it is always worth investigating and fixing the root cause (whether it is stress, PCOS, hypothyroidism or whatever) but they will not stop fat loss entirely and certainly often when the root cause is treated it’s back on you to hit that calorie deficit. Fat loss is only ever going to be a factor of energy balance albeit with certain conditions your calorie requirement may be significantly lower than you’d like 🤷🏽‍♂️

🏋️Strength training will build you some muscle if you're in a fat loss phase, not the most amount of muscle you can, and not in the most optimal way possible, but if you're just getting into this fitness thingy you will build some muscle. 🏃Cardio will help you create a bigger caloric deficit and it'll help you with your endurance. But in my opinion it should NOT be your main focus if you’re trying to lose fat.

I don’t have the willpower to say no to the big creamy pints of Guinness with friends and family. So now I just spend it Asia working on fitness and eating insanely good. The pressure to drink just isn’t there in your face. Im lucky I was able to make that choice. Most people can’t. Try remember loads are struggling and maybe don’t pressurize people into drinking or hand them Prosecco at 11 in the morning with breakfast or hound them into being more “Craic” by drinking. If ur off the drink well done you are through the worst of it and everybody will be feeling miserable and fat in about 4 days time 🤣🤣

Yesterday was my last session with this guy after a year and 2 months of working with each other, and let me just tell you all how extremely blessed I am to have created such an amazing relationship with this dude right here. 🏋🏻‍♀️ You had a really tough workout. This will cause a rise in stress hormone thus causing some water rentention to help with recovery.

😴 You didn’t sleep enough. Sleep is where we recover the most. It helps regulate our stress hormones. Lack of sleep leads to those stress hormones staying elevated thus leading to increased water retention.

🤤 You ate a bunch of salty foods. The increase sodium increase will lead to you holding on to a bit more water.

🍽 You ate most of your macros later in the day. This will mean that your body is still digesting most of the food thus you more food in your system. This is where the not eating after 8pm myth came into play 👎🏻

💩 You haven’t pooped! If you haven’t had some good poops lately, that means that you still have some poop in your system keeping your weight up! Lol sounds gross but it’s true 😂

😩 You are stressed. This will lead to an increase in those stress hormones leading to that retention in water that I mentioned earlier.

People don’t think I struggle just because I love health and fitness. I do struggle a lot especially since I have PCOS, Lynch syndrome, and endometriosis.

Some people will use it as a crutch or excuse as to why they gain weight but then, if you know you already have some conditions that make you do that - you can take control of what you eat and what you do. It’s not like you just get fat overnight. It’s your habits that will get you fat and overweight. This is why I need to make that conscious effort to take control on a daily basis.

Given that, I need to work harder than most to get results that I want or to even simply maintain. Sometimes I think it’s unfair that I don’t have it easy compared to most but then again, victory isn’t as sweet if it all came easy to me. I struggle because I’m not always emotionally “happy and perfect” and yes, I do get lazy. 🤮
There’s always room for improvement in my journey. I also tend to get extremely disgusted with myself that I’m not always 100% but then again, it reminds me that I need to show myself a bit more compassion.❤️ This health journey is all about learning and growing every single day. It’s not about being perfect but it’s more so about being better than you were yesterday. This journey will have setbacks but it’s up to us to rise above those setbacks. This journey isn’t about comparing ourselves to others because that’s just a waste of time and energy.

Yes, it’s tough but it’s so worth growing through it. Why? Because we are worth it. ❤️🙏🏻

Coach @suzq_fit addresses how to stay on track with your fitness goals while working night shift.
It’s no secret that shift work is tough on every aspect of our lives, including our health and fitness but it’s something that many of us will face at some point, especially if you are in the healthcare business. Here are some easy tips for how to take care of your body and health while working night shift:
Sleep: there are two ways people do this when working night shift. The first way is to keep a normal daytime schedule and then take a 30min-2hr nap prior to shift starting. The second way is to stay on the night schedule meaning even on your days off you stay up throughout the night and sleep during the day. The latter is likely better for your body to be able to have a consistent routine but it is not always possible for every individual.
Eat: Don’t eat a giant meal right before your shift and then try not to eat all night, that’s not realistic as you are up and moving and awake throughout the night and will inevitably get hungry. Instead eat small meals throughout the shift just as you would if you were awake. Also digestion is going to be much more sensitive to the change in routine so a large meal is likely to cause further GI upset.
Plan & Prep: You know the saying “failing to plan is planning to fail.” That heavily applies to shift work. Make sure to plan and prep all your meals to take to work with you and make sure they are healthy whole foods that are relatively easy to digest. If you don’t plan and wing it with eating whatever is at work you will likely end up making poor choices and eating what is laying around the break room which are usually high fat foods and treats.
Water & Caffeine: Stop slamming coffee all night and start slamming water. Overdoing it with caffeine has many negative health effects and won’t necessarily keep you anymore awake at night, especially with how quickly you build a tolerance to caffeine. Drinking water will not only allow you to feel more alert throughout the night but it will help you stay hydrated and encourage the ⬇️⬇️⬇️

#repost @blokfong After having a total thyroidectomy due to thyroid cancer and dealing with no thyroid, I gained lots of weight. I’m sure being 35 didn’t help either. 😂 My friend, Sara, told me about Omalza Fitness and their 6 week challenge. I decided to just talk to them and see if it was even possible for me. I met with Randy and Shannon and they both agreed it would be tough but maybe it would reset my body. The rest is history and @omalzafitness (Spider-Man pushups, are you for reals? 😉), @functionalfitness34 (booty gains! With 135 lb sled pushes and pulls), @dels9_ofit (wtf are kicksits?) and @seancantor (no chicken wings!) got me back to where I need to be. Lost 7.9% body fat and almost 10lbs in 6 weeks. I still have a long road ahead of me but I know I can do this. I had extra obstacles in my way but I gained some gains! Thanks Omalza and @ofitmeals for some yummy meals! Now it’s time for me to eat some carbs 😜 and get back on track tomorrow for my 27th day streak of working out. Back in August I started a new demanding job. I had come to terms with my decision to put competitive CrossFit aside. It quickly became apparent that I was not ready to let it go.
It was a tough adjustment.
Come November, I was a shell of a human. I was so stressed from my job, barely sleeping, mad most of the time, and struggling to get in and through training sessions without crying.
I was still managing to do everything. However, I was in denial about how much ‘doing everything’ was costing.
I hired Mike to help with my nutrition. After my first conversation with him, I knew he had more to offer than nutrition consulting.
Nutrition is an interesting field. There are so many interconnected factors; it cannot be addressed in a vacuum. Put simply, food is fuel and hunger is a physical response to tell you to eat. But it's not simple - food and hunger are affected by emotion, stress (mental and physical), sleep, schedule, social environment, etc…
Mike addressed ALL of these factors.
Reducing job stress was going to be tough, but getting more sleep, easing up on myself during training sessions and having someone to talk to about my struggles made a huge difference. Maybe being <13% body fat wasn't necessary. I had to give up a few things. 😒
Mike's approach is very health and performance driven. It was hard at first to increase my macros and not worry about my body composition, but I am realizing that if you eat to perform and strive for health, ideal body composition will be achieved. It’s hard not to value aesthetics as an athlete when you get attention because of your body on a daily basis.
I am still extremely stressed and anxious, but that's partly because I am generally an anxious person and I choose to live in high stress environments. Stress can be good, but too much can be debilitating.
I realized I can't have everything, but I can have most of it. Mike helped me recognize that.

Today I’m off to the UK and Thailand to catch up with some of the most inspiring females I know and leaving behind my awesome Sydney babes. I’ve got some amazing women in my squad across the globe, from mothers, to teachers, to abuse survivors, to dog mums, to lunatics on the dance floor and I am so proud of them all and love them dearly.

I checked my body fat % at the InBody at @katalystfit today. Weight on the machine shows a little high based on clothing, coffee, breakfast, and water, but I weighed in at home this morning at 118.6. Machine says 9% body fat, and I’ll continue to use the same machine to monitor progress.
Not going to lie, going from eating lots and training as a strength athlete to highly regimented eating and training for bodybuilding has been tough. Seeing progress in photos is making it worth it, though. I’m learning a lot about how my body works and getting mentally tougher as well. Excited to see how the next few weeks go! 😊

Between my writing and speaking request, our Jump Start challenges and Quest community for fitness and of course our non-profit. I just couldn’t justify the time it takes to train 1.1.

Two months ago I told Keith I wanted to do it again for one month and see how it felt. So two days ago we started with a small hand-full of people, virtually training them one on one.
I’m so happy I’m taking the time. It’s reigniting my passion for what I do, for fitness and for seeing other people succeed. It’s like getting back to basics. I love seeing people’s efforts on a personal level.
One of thee things I’m seeing that I already knew is that people really struggle with food. I think on a deep level, we all know what to eat to be healthier but until someone sits and dissects the food you eat, most people just get by with the same old stuff that’s not working.
Here are a few good tips.
#1 - You must eat ENOUGH. Eating too few calories is a recipe for weight gain and screwed up hormones that lead to your body holding onto fat. This is a common mistake I see many clients make.

#2 - You must eat well. Eating crap will give you a crappy outcome. Whole Foods are the way to go. Food is in their natural state without added preservatives and chemicals.
#3 - You must eat nutrient dense foods. This one is tough for people. Veggies are KEY to health and fitness. You need quality veggies too like dark green leafy veggies! Broccoli, asparagus, spinach, kale, Brussel sprouts are a personal favorite.
#4 - You must drink WATER. Not sparkling water, not coffee, not tea...but water. Don’t think the cup of water that goes into your coffee counts - it doesn’t. Have the coffee but drink the water too!

#5 - You must understand that food dictates your health. You are what you eat. Everything you put in makes up who you are at a cellular level. Put in the stuff that makes for a strong you.

It’s no secret that shift work is tough on every aspect of our lives, including our health and fitness but it’s something that many of us will face at some point, especially if you are in the healthcare business. Here are some easy tips for how to take care of your body and health while working night shift:
Sleep: there are two ways people do this when working night shift. The first way is to keep a normal daytime schedule and then take a 30min-2hr nap prior to shift starting. The second way is to stay on the night schedule meaning even on your days off you stay up throughout the night and sleep during the day. The latter is likely better for your body to be able to have a consistent routine but it is not always possible for every individual.
Eat: Don’t eat a giant meal right before your shift and then try not to eat all night, that’s not realistic as you are up and moving and awake throughout the night and will inevitably get hungry. Instead eat small meals throughout the shift just as you would if you were awake. Also digestion is going to be much more sensitive to the change in routine so a large meal is likely to cause further GI upset.
Plan & Prep: You know the saying “failing to plan is planning to fail.” That heavily applies to shift work. Make sure to plan and prep all your meals to take to work with you and make sure they are healthy whole foods that are relatively easy to digest. If you don’t plan and wing it with eating whatever is at work you will likely end up making poor choices and eating what is laying around the break room which are usually high fat foods and treats.
Water & Caffeine: Stop slamming coffee all night and start slamming water. Overdoing it with caffeine has many negative health effects and won’t necessarily keep you anymore awake at night, especially with how quickly you build a tolerance to caffeine. Drinking water will not only allow you to feel more alert throughout the night but it will help you stay 👇🏻

At checkins on the weekend - I was happy and felt good still - but to give some perspective- these pics are my pre-comp abs and this is where I’m sitting at currently. I won’t lie- I kinda feel soft right now.
I’d like to stay around here or better during my off season and here’s why -
1. Personally I find it tough to shift kg’s leading up to a comp
2. When there’s a lot of kg’s to lose - my mind gets a bit overwhelmed I think and I can get into negative thinking pretty easily.
3. My kind of negative thinking results in me kind of losing the plot when it comes to my nutrition and can lead to days of not following the plan.
4. That’s tough for me to write because I try to be tough and try to be ‘good’ all the time. I’ve learnt I am human - and I have the same weaknesses as everyone else
5. In summary - I am reverse dieting out of comp- trying to stick to the plan and limiting body fat gain in order counteract the consequences of getting into that negative space (overeating- which leads to weight gain and becomes a viscous cycle

Perfection shouldn’t be the name of this game. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Exercise because it feels good and because it’s something you enjoy, and the rest will fall into place.

Worry too much about what others think: When I first decided to “get healthy” in 2014, I didn’t tell a soul other than my boyfriend. Why? Because I was worried what others might say:
- “Why do YOU need to work out? You’re so skinny!”
- “Wow. You think you’re fat?! What does that make me?!”
- “You used to love cookies. What’s wrong? Do you have an eating disorder?”
At a time when I was less than confident, it was just easier to go it alone and avoid any comments that might throw me off track. Hopefully, you’re surrounded by people who will support you and cheer you on, but if not, who cares! Many times, these comments are a projection of people’s own insecurities and feelings. When I opened up about my goals where I was afraid, I actually found that it helped motivate and inspire others, which was great! You never know who you might inspire. Be a motivator and be confident in your goals.

Have unrealistic expectations: I think this is a pretty common issue with our “instant gratification” culture. Results can come in 12 weeks, but you are going to have to work really, really hard and you’re going to have to sacrifice quite a bit. The good news is that results can happen without having to give 500% of your time and effort — they just may take longer, like half a year, a year, etc. The cool part about this? You get to enjoy your life, too!

It's special because Teenasai and I finished one of the world's toughest workout programmes: Insanity. It's been a tough 60 days. When I first started I cried on most days because I was craving the junk I've been eating so much. I get hungry very quickly so I cried about my meals not keeping me satiated. I cried because I felt weak. I couldn't go through an entire session without gasping for breath. //60 days later, I'm stronger. The picture cannot even begin to say how healthy and good I FEEL. That is what health is about. FEELING and BEING healthy. The weight is a composition of a bunch of things in your body. Let that be. How you look is also something VERY VERY subjective. I look beautiful to the people I love before I started this, and I still look beautiful to them now.
But it's important for me to say this to everyone reading this, because fitness and health is about how healthy you are inside, how your system is all greased up (with oxygen everywhere, not fat) and ready to take on every single day. I've lost weight, but I'm not going to mention it because it doesn't matter. It took some time for me to learn that it doesn't but I'm getting there.
Lastly, working out and following fitness routines and a healthy diet is extremely difficult when you have depression and such annoying things in your head. But fitness helps, and a programme helped the both of us stay on track.

Excuse my fat head 😏 An early #throwback to a snap last week when there as an awkward tricep pump happening on a pull session 🧐 • I always get thrown the question “how you keep finding something to train for?” Or “what are you training for?” Or even “it’s easy cause you work in the gym”. Truth is that there is no end goal, it’s about making exercise and health a total lifestyle on every level from physically to mentally. Yeah some days are tough and your tired from early rises and late finishes, can’t find the energy to lift up that weight or do that cardio. It’s not easy cause you work in the fitness industry, we all have these days too TRUST ME! (Anyone who says they don’t are liars) What keeps me moving forward every session is working better than I did yesterday and learning from my failures. I’ve failed soo many times at things but I’m so grateful because if I never did fail, I would never have moved forward and over come those hurdles. Work hard, be open to feedback, learn from your mistakes and surround yourself with like minded people ✅✌️

Ladies, bloating is, for the most part, very common and we all experience it! These two photos are legit about 6-7 hours apart. 😳 I don't stress about it anymore though because I know it's temporary, and I know what I did to cause it (I ate out for both lunch and dinner = multiple slices of pizza + a massive burger 😅🍕🍔).

Fast food often causes bloating because it's usually sky-high in sodium, fat and sugar! 😵 Here are some reasons you might be bloating:

✖️SODIUM: too much causes water retention.
✖️FAT: takes longer to digest than carbs/protein, thus moves through the digestive system slower.
✖️SUGAR: fructose, present in many processed foods, is tough for many people to digest, as are artificial sweeteners, like sorbitol.
✖️DAIRY: many people experience bloat/discomfort because their body cannot digest lactose, the sugar found in dairy products.
✖️EATING TOO FAST: you might be swallowing a lot of air by scarfing down your food, causing gas to build up in your intestines and create discomfort/swelling.

Knowledge is power, so I hope this little bit of info can help other girls realize why they may be bloating, and that it doesn't mean you're "fat" or "gross" or whatever other words girls use to tear themselves down about their body. 🙅🏼 WE ARE NOT PHOTOS ❌ - we are humans with living, breathing bodies that continually adapt and change shape in order to keep up with whatever our lifestyles/diets might throw at us. Your body is pretty damn resilient - and personally I think that's cool AF. 😼🙌🏼️️

These types of self-hate or self shaming and negative internal dialogues are a type of body dysmorphia. And even if you don’t want to admit it. I am willing to bet that right now 99% of the population experiences this at some point , every time they look in the mirror. The more time you spend on social media the more likely it is.

To this I think, posting selfies and body shots is a type of self shame rebellion. A rebellion of your own brain and self doubt. To post that pic even when you almost didn’t. Shit , maybe even post it because you almost didn’t.

Why the holy fark wouldn’t you.

I hope no matter what you see when you look in the mirror, you know , when someone else looks at you they will see only beauty and not a single flaw.

When others judge you they are only judging themselves. .
.
We all have our own unique bodies with their own shape and proportions. We all have to learn how to appreciate our vessel more so than beat it into submission.

I only say this because to be honest I think my knees look fat here.. how does someone have such big knees? Wtf.
.
The next progression to this hold is to let go of my hands and just hold myself here by the neck. Yikes. It’s a tough one.

I had been coming to Fitness With Insight via ClassPass for about a year...then I decided to ditch ClassPass and join FWI because I liked the personalized instruction and the tough workouts that are always changing. I have been a full time member of FWI for about 6 months.

How many days a week do you train at Fitness With Insight?

I had a goal of getting fit for my wedding. I didn’t want to do a quick diet, I wanted to burn fat and gain muscle. So in July I told Char that come February, I would look different! So I started coming three days a week at first, then have been coming at least 4 times a week, sometimes 5 since September.

What’s a guilty pleasure you can’t live without?

I’ve learned that I can go without a lot of guilty pleasures that I once thought I could never give up. But, after a month of no booze, I’m dying for a mimosa. That’s happening soon!!! Do you have any morning rituals?

Drag myself out of bed, say my prayers, and drink coffee!!! What’s your favorite saying? “Give yourself a pat on the back” — it’s my favorite when Char says it at the end of class when we are stretching (and I always give a pat)... Favorite Fitness clothing brand?

My workout friend, Mel, and I love Athletha...for work, working out and running around.

Any other fun facts?

I’m obsessed with the juices next door at Angela’s...I have a “carrot top” after class every Saturday.

I work in advertising but I’m also a Certified Firearms Instructor and love teaching women how to shoot/think about self defense.

That was the most challenging workout of my life. I have nothing else of note to say, it was terrible. The tank is empty. The hunger is insane. Body fat melting off. Sleep is terrible.
