Liu Shiyuan’s video work 'Isolated Above, Connected Down,' which was featured in her first major solo presentation in the United States at the gallery, will be included at the FRONT International Cleveland Triennial, opening on July 14 and on view through September 30, 2018.
.
The work will be shown over Opening Weekend, on Sunday July 15 at 4:30 pm. And hree more screenings at 1 pm on August 1, August 22, and September 12.
.
'Isolated Above, Connected Down' exemplifies one of the core concepts in Liu’s work, which explores knowledge, information and significance as fluid, fluxing fragments. The video shows how, in our world made up of myriad heterogenous cultures and social collectives, meaning and context are constantly fluctuating, therefore destabilizing history as primarily a narrative onto itself.
.
Born in 1985 in Beijing, Liu Shiyuan is based in both Beijing and Copenhagen. Liu’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibition globally, including: Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; K11, Hong Kong; Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf; Vermillion Sands, Copenhagen; Pino Pascali Foundation Museum, Polignano; Foundation Louis Vuitton, Paris; Aurora Museum, Yuz Museum, Long Museum, Qiao Space, Shanghai; Central Academy of Fine Art Museum, Beijing; OCT-Contemporary Art Terminal, Shenzhen; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, among others. @shiyuanliu

This poster was produced in 2013 on the occasion of “Anselm Kiefer: Morgenthau Plan” at Gagosian Gallery in Paris and New York.⠀

Throughout his life, Kiefer has been exploring the complex events of history reflecting upon his early life at the end of World War II in post-war Germany. Themes of identity, life, death pave the endless repertoire of imagery the artist built with a wide range of media.⠀

In 1944, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau, Jr. proposed a plan to transform post-war Germany into a pre-modern, agricultural land in order to limit the nation’s ability to engage in war. Although the Morgenthau plan was never realized in its original form, it represented a post-war Germany of farmland and nature rather than one of factory and industry. Kiefer’s exploration of the rural landscapes questions the contradiction of blooming flora on a devastated land.⠀

Anselm Kiefer (b.1945, Donaueschingen, Germany) is a mixed-media artist. He began his art education under Joseph Beuys in Düsseldorf. His work has been shown and collected by major museums throughout the world. Recent retrospectives include “Anselm Kiefer: Heaven and Earth,” the Modern Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas and “Anselm Kiefer,” Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (2007). In 2009, Kiefer directed and designed the sets for Ann Anfang (In the Beginning) at the Opéra National de Paris. Kiefer lives and works in France.⠀

Agnieszka Kurant's 'End of Signature,’ 2018, is on view at the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the FRONT Triennial through September 30th!
.
For the inaugural edition of the FRONT Triennial which opened this week across Cleveland, Ohio, Kurant was commissioned to create a large-scale work from her ‘End of Signature’ series, currently featured on the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Marcel Breuer facade. The unique neon signature form was created by combing the signatures of all Cleveland Museum employees, from administrative to maintenance, curatorial to members of the board of trustees into a single 'collective signature’.
.
The work is an important part of Kurant's ongoing exploration of hybrid authorship and collective intelligence, this unique body of work engages technology’s role in the obfuscation of individual authorship, the decline of handwriting in our civilization, and its gradual replacement by keystrokes on technological devices. ‘End of Signature’ compiles the handwritten signatures of hundreds of participants that are morphed into a single inscription form via software Kurant developed with a professional programmer. Addressing editing as both a political and creative process, this piece analyzes ideas of value, ownership and production as they shift from the individual to the collective, reorienting our own understanding of the signature and what it represents.
.
Preceding versions of this series have also been exhibited on the facade of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Hoog Catharijne, Utrecht, Netherlands; Lucie Fontaine Foundation, Bali and Java, Indonesia, and in her solo exhibitions at CCA Tel Aviv, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, NY and T Space, Rhinebeck, NY.

Soon after leaving The Trisha Brown Dance Company, Palacios Whitman developed a unique performance style of her own in which she used surreal stage props and giant drawings to create a visual theater that combined a rich Latin-American pictorial sensibility with the minimalism of the New York dance scene. She performed these works at various venues in downtown Manhattan such as artists’ lofts, The Kitchen, Sonnabend Gallery, and the Whitney Museum of American Art Downtown Branch as well as the Guggenheim Museum. / Photographer: Babette Mangolte. #SylviaPalaciosWhitman #BabetteMangolte #SonnabendGallery #broadway1602 #radicalwomen

We are pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition of American artist Elizabeth #Peyton. The artist’s new paintings and works on paper will be unveiled at 'Eventyr', a title taken from an old Norse word meaning fairytale and/or adventure, to be shown at Ropac’s #Salzburg gallery in July/ August 2018. To mark the occasion, a preview is presented at our #ArtBasel18 booth (Halle 2.0, Stand B1) with her painting ‘Hanyu (Yuzuru Hanyu)’.
Peyton's works, though figurative, also use the language of abstract paintings - they are as sweeping, open and gestural as they are delicate and fragile. Mostly portraits, they also include still life, landscape and self-portraits, depicted in various mediums (oil painting, watercolour, drawing and print). Her subjects range from King Ludwig II of Bavaria to her dog Isolde, from friends, artists (writers, musicians etc), particular royalty, characters from literature, to historical figures and athletes.
Her works are represented in distinguished international collections including at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Kunstmuseum, Wolfsburg; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Tate Modern, London and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

About Stephen Shore
Stephen Shore's work has been widely published and exhibited for the past forty-five years. He was the first living photographer to have a one-man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since Alfred Stieglitz, forty years earlier. He has also had one-man shows at George Eastman House, Rochester; Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Jeu de Paume, Paris; and Art Institute of Chicago. In 2017, the Museum of Modern Art opened a major retrospective spanning Stephen Shore's entire career. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His series of exhibitions at Light Gallery in New York in the early 1970s sparked new interest in color photography and in the use of the view camera for documentary work.

"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see"— #EdgarDegas born on this day in 1834. Like many Impressionist artists, Degas cast his gaze upon Paris’s electrifying society of spectacle, painting scenes of the café-concert, the opera, and the races. He also looked to those living on the fringes of this world: alienated people drinking absinthe, laundresses, milliners, and prostitutes. Perhaps, most recognizable are his ballerinas, seen in dance classes, at rest, rehearsing, and performing. His 1903 pastel and charcoal drawing "Dancers in Green and Yellow," is currently on view in our Thannhauser Gallery. Learn more at guggenheim.org/collection. #GuggenheimCollection #Guggenheim #Degas

Esther Ferrer’s solo exhibition at the iconic Gehry-designed museum consists of eleven installations, two of which will be specially activated in performances. This piece is part of the artist’s ‘Suspended Chairs’ series. Through the use of string and tension, Ferrer creates a surreal effect, as the chair appears to float in the gallery. The juxtaposition between the simplicity of the object and the sublime display makes this a memorable work. Ferrer is among Spain’s most important living artists, having pioneered the country’s performance art scene. Catch the exhibition before it closes on June 10th! #UnlockArt #TheCultivist #EstherFerrer #Bilbao #GuggenheimBilbao @museoguggenheim © Esther Ferrer, VEGAP, Bilbao, 2018

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, and located in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. The New Yorker, characterized it as "a fantastic dream ship of undulating form in a cloak of titanium.” Built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Cantabrian Sea, it is one of the most admired works of contemporary architecture, the building has been hailed as a "signal moment in the architectural culture.” The curves on the exterior of the building were intended to appear random; the architect said that "the randomness of the curves are designed to catch the light.” The museum is seamlessly integrated into the urban context, unfolding its interconnecting shapes of stone, glass and titanium on a 32,500-square-meter (350,000 sq ft) site along the Nervión River in the ancient industrial heart of the city. #bilbao #museoguggenheim #basquecountry #españa🇪🇸 #españa #spain #spaintravel #spain_gallery #spain_greatshots #spainlandscapes

The Thannhauser Gallery was one of the most significant art dealerships in Germany in the opening decades of the twentieth century. First and foremost, Thannhauser naturally wanted to sell Van Gogh’s work, but in doing so, he indirectly steadily increased Van Gogh’s reputation as an esteemed and recognized artist. "Photography helps people to see". Born on this day the American photographer Berenice Abbott. From our collection her portrait of Peggy Guggenheim, commissioned by the collector while Berenice was working as a darkroom assistant for the photographer Man Ray. As a portrait photographer Abbott wished to develop a style that was different from that of her teacher, Man Ray, avoiding anything contrived or fanciful. Abbott wanted to allow the strength of the female sitter to shine through and felt that a portrait should be much more than a likeness. It should reveal the subject’s character. Facial expression, dress and surroundings, gesture or mannerism – all of these were to work toward some idea of the person’s inner life. Consequently, Abbott’s portrait of Peggy expertly captures the essence of the future art collector (who also had a lifelong love of dogs). #BereniceAbbott #PeggyGuggenheimCollection

When I was in Spain, I used to go to all galleries and museums I could, and every time, I was inspired by the artists. I have seen amazing talent.

나는이 적포도주를 정말로 사랑한다~

Chateau Mouton Rothschild the First Growth Bordeaux wine is famous for not only producing one of the worlds great wines, they are also well-known for their continuing support of the arts. Since 1945, when the Baron Phillipe Rothschild asked Philippe Jullian to design a unique label for their 1945 wine, Chateau Mouton Rothschild has continued that tradition by asking a different artist each year to design a new label.
Some of the most celebrated artists of our time have created artworks for the labels of Chateau Mouton Rothschild including: Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Jean Cocteau, Georges Braque, Henry Moore, Marc Chagall, Keith Haring and Pablo Picasso, to name a few.
For their 2013 Mouton Rothschild label, the chateau chose Lee Ufan.
Lee Ufan is the Korean artist who founded the avant-garde group Mono-ha (School of Things), Japan’s first internationally acknowledged movement in contemporary art.
Lee Ufan is considered a minimalist artist, which can clearly be seen in the design for the 2013 Mouton Rothschild label.
Lee Ufan used shades of deepening purple that evokes the colors of the wine in their vat room.
Lee Ufan is as you would expect, a highly regarded artist with works on display in some of the most important museums in the world including: MoMA, New York, The Guggenheim Museum, New York, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, The Tate Gallery, London; and the National Museums of Modern Art in Tokyo Japan.

Exhibition - Peter Fischli David Weiss - Matthew Marks Gallery

Peter Fischli David Weiss Since 1979 Peter Fischli (b. 1952) and David Weiss (1946-2012) have been collaborating on a body of work that combines, rearranges, or otherwise manipulates their daily experiences into something new and unexpected. Executed in a variety of media, including unfired clay, polyurethane, photography, and video, their work playfully ignores the distinction between high and low art. The duo is perhaps best known for the 1987 film The Way Things Go, in which an improbable, Rube Goldberg-esque chain of events unfolds involving household objects and detritus in their studio. The work of Fischli and Weiss has been exhibited at major museums and biennials around the world. The artists represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale in 1995 and were awarded the 2003 Golden Lion for Questions (1981-2002), an installation of more than a thousand existential queries collected over several years. Fischli and Weiss also took part in Documenta 8 (1987) and 10 (1997). Their retrospective In A Restless World was organized by the Walker Art Center in 1996 and traveled to San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Boston. In 2006 Tate Modern presented another retrospective, Flowers and Questions, which traveled to the Kunsthaus Zürich and the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. They participated in Venice’s 2012 Architectural Biennale and 2013 Art Biennale and have had exhibitions at the Art institute of Chicago (2011) and the Serpentine Gallery, London (2013). In 2016 the Guggenheim presented Peter Fischli David Weiss: How to Work Better, their third career retrospective, which traveled to Museo Jumex in Mexico City. Peter Fischli lives and works in Zurich.

Nicholas Pope b.1949 in Sydney, Australia. Lives and Works in Ledbury and London, UK.
Pope makes abstract works that reference complex themes of belief, religion, and their role in society. His work is held in public collections around the world, including Tate, the Guggenheim and the Rijksmuseum, and he represented Britain at the 1980 Venice Biennale. Well known in the 1970's and 1980's for his large-scale sculptures in wood, metal, stone and chalk, Pope was a contemporary of David Nash, Bill Woodrow and Richard Deacon, along with other sculptors rising to prominence in that period who worked against the formalism of the Caro school of sculpture, dominant at the time. Illness contracted in the early 1980's precipitated a hiatus in Pope’s career and a change in direction in his interests. His exhibition ‘Nicholas Pope: The Apostles Speaking in Tongues’ (Tate Britain, 1996) marked his return to the public eye. Richard Deacon has said of Pope’s unusual career trajectory: “It is true that reputation can rest on exposure and that Nick has been underexposed but, to me, he has never gone away, a wonderful talent that is always around when I am thinking about making sculpture." Selected past exhibitions include:
Sticky Intimacy, Chapter, Cardiff, UK, 2016, Baldock Pope Zahle, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, UK , 2016, Richard Saltoun Gallery, London, 2014, New Art Centre, Roche Court Sculpture Park, Salisbury, UK, 2013, The Ten Commandments in Flowing Light, Art & Project, Slootdorp, The Netherlands, 2001, Art Now: Nicholas Pope: The Apostles Speaking in Tongues, Tate Gallery, London, UK, 1996,  Art & Project, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 1992; Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterlo, The Netherlands, 1981; British Pavilion, Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy, 1980; Summer Show 3, Serpentine Gallery, London, UK, 1976; Arts Council Collection, Hayward Gallery, London, UK, 1976; The Condition of Sculpture, Hayward Gallery, London, UK, 1975.

Her family emigrated to the US in 1936 – she was to live there until 1955. Her short life was brilliant, creative and troubled. She took painting lessons from George Grosz, was close to Erika and Klauss Mann, befriended André Breton (whose flat she lived in for a while) and hung out with Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Isabelle Waldberg, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock and others. She was influenced by automatic writing and abstract expressionism and designed costumes for Merce Cunningham. Unusually for the time, she was also open about being gay. Her work was included in the 1943 show, 31 Women Artists at Art of this Century (Peggy Guggenheim's gallery in New York); she then showed in Betty Parsons gallery. After visiting Mexico, she became friends with Frida Kahlo, who visited her in New York; John Cage dedicated one of the 'Seven Haiku' to her; she lived for a while in Paris in the same hotel as Natica Waterbury and Jane Bowles; she also met Pierre Boulez, Alice Toklas and Léopold Sedar Senghor. Towards the end of her life, due to her fragile heath and lack of finances, she moved back with her parents in Switzerland. She committed suicide aged 45. In 1996, ‘Sonja Sekula (1918–1963): A Retrospective’, was held at @swissinstitute, New York and since then, her work has gradually been rediscovered. This portait shows her painting in Long Island in 1946. #soniasekula #bowdown #borntoday

Cecily Brown’s work has emerged as some of the most influential of her generation. Brown’s work takes cues from historical movements in painting as well as from pop culture. This work, included in our current exhibition “SEED,” references a classic American song title. By freeing her subjects and inspirations from their original contexts, Brown gracefully maneuvers past the role of any explicit narrative in the composition of her pictures, and points to the expurgation or re-contextualization inherent in quoting from sources again in a different moment in time. Angular forms partially bound with swathes of color, reduced to complexions or expressions, dissolve into kaleidoscopic compositions.

Brown’s work is exhibited in the world’s leading cultural institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London; Guggenheim, New York; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. “SEED” is on view at 293 Tenth Ave through August 17. •

“At first there was only that one picture, a self-portrait. It was a modest canvas by present-day standards. But it filled my New York studio, the apartment’s back room, as if it had always been there. For one thing, it was the room; I had been struck, one day, by a fascinating array of doors — hall, kitchen, bathroom, studio — crowded together, soliciting my attention with their antic planes, light, shadows, imminent openings and shuttings. From there it was an easy leap to a dream of countless doors. Perhaps in a way it was a talisman for the things that were happening, an iteration of quiet event, line densities wrought in a crystal paperweight of time where nothing was expected to appear except the finished canvas and, later, a few snowflakes, for the season was Christmas, 1942, and Max was my Christmas present. -
-
It was snowing hard when he rang the doorbell. Choosing pictures for a show at Peggy Guggenheim’s gallery to be called ‘Thirty-One Women’, he was a willing emissary to the studios of a bouquet of pretty young painters who, besides being pretty, which they couldn’t help, were also very serious about being artists. - -
“Please come in,” I smiled, trying to say it as if to just anyone. We moved to the studio, and there on an easel was the portrait, not quite finished. He looked while I tried not to. At last, “What do you call it?” he asked. “I really haven’t a title.” “Then you can call it Birthday.” Just like that.” -

One of the central figures of the New York School, Mark Rothko is best known for his mature idiom, first seen in his paintings of 1949—large-scale compositions comprising stacked, hovering rectangular fields of luminous color. Rothko emphatically rejected the reading of his work in merely formal, aesthetic terms, insisting that he was "not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else." Rather, he used abstract means to express "basic human emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on," earnestly striving to create an art of awe-inspiring intensity for a secular world. Those viewers who broke down and wept before his paintings, he stated, had "the same religious experience I had when I painted them." The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao's Untitled was featured prominently in a 1954 exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, the first solo exhibition of Rothko's mature work in a major American museum. The show comprised eight paintings carefully arranged in a relatively compact and low-ceilinged gallery. Hanging freely from the ceiling near the entrance, Untitled established the prevailing tone, receiving visitors with an inescapable frontality that allowed them no refuge in distance. Scale was an enormously important factor for Rothko: as he explained in a 1951 symposium, he painted on such a large scale not in order to produce something "grandious and pompous," but rather "precisely because I want to be intimate and human. To paint a small picture is to place yourself outside your experience, to look upon an experience as a stereopticon view or with a reducing glass. However you paint the larger picture, you are in it. It isn't something you command." @museoguggenheim

The acquittal caused an uproar among feminists in the art world, and continues to remain controversial to this day. In 2010, a symposium called Where Is Ana Mendieta was held at New York University to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her death. In May 2014, the feminist protest group No Wave Performance Task Force staged a protest in front of the Dia Art Foundation's retrospective on Carl Andre. The group deposited piles of animal blood and guts in front of the establishment, with protesters donning transparent tracksuits with "I Wish Ana Mendieta Was Still Alive" written on them. In March 2015, the No Wave Performance Task Force and a group of feminist poets from New York City traveled to Beacon, New York to protest the Andre retrospective at Dia:Beacon, where they cried loudly in the main gallery, made "siluetas" in the snow on museum grounds, and stained the snow with paprika, sprinkles, and fake blood. In April 2017, protesters at an Andre retrospective handed out cards at the Geffen Contemporary with the statement Carl Andre is at MOCA Geffen. ¿Dónde está Ana Mendieta?” (Where is Ana Mendieta?). This was followed by an open letter to MOCA Director Philippe Vergne protesting the exhibit from the group the Association of Hysteric Curators.
There have been several major retrospectives of Mendieta's artwork since her death. Today, her art features in many important public collections, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, all New York, Art Institute of Chicago, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva, and Tate Collection, London. #destroytheday

A huge congratulations to Kate Gilmore for receiving the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship award!! Her solo show "Morning Rage" is up at Aspect/Ratio until this Saturday April 7! ✨✨✨
"Through the use of repetition and performance, much of Gilmore’s practice demonstrates a resolute transformative pro- cess that comes out of destruction. Destruction and dexterity are arsenal for the artist who consistently goes well beyond the limitations of what material is generally prepared to endure. It is with this prowess and fervor that fuel her latest sculp- tural works. Highly lacquered metal cubes are hammered continuously, creating scars and dismantling their otherwise polished appearance.
Kate Gilmore is a New York multi-media based artist and Associate Professor of Art and Design at Purchase College at SUNY Purchase. Gilmore received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts and Bachelors from Bates College. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions including: Museum of Modern Art, MCA Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, ICA Philadelphia and The Rose Art Museum. Notable exhibitions and awards include: The Art Prize 2015; the Whitney Biennial 2010; The Moscow Biennial, Moscow; and PS1 Greater New York 2005 & 2010. Gilmore’s work is included in many public institutional collections: Museum of Modern Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, California; Rose Art Museum, Waltham, Massachusetts; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana, Indianapolis; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Illinois.”

The artist produced his first painted cut out in 1959. Since that time, the figures depicted in this ongoing series have portrayed the ever-changing artistic milieu of New York’s painters, poets and critics, as well as friends and acquaintances of the artist himself. As in much of Katz’ oeuvre, the figures exist not as characters in a narrative but rather as manifestations of his ongoing exploration into formal arrangement, interrogating the particularities of perception and optics.

From 1951, Katz (b. 1927) has been the subject of over 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group shows internationally. He has had retrospectives at institutions such as The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; The Jewish Museum, New York; The Saatchi Gallery, London; Tate St. Ives, UK; Turner Contemporary, UK; Albertina Museum, Vienna; and The Guggenheim, Bilbao, and The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.

Our summer show, “SEED” is now officially open to the public at our 293 10th Ave space. This exhibition, curated and envisioned by @YvonneForce (co-founder of the Art Production Fund and Culture Corps), brings together a group of contemporary artists who explore the complexity and resonance of a long association between the natural world, sexuality and fertility, and spirituality and mysticism. Force’s understanding of the artistic practice as akin to witchcraft—resonant with ideas of creation in both the divine and horticultural senses—informs the curation of works that span landscape, figuration, symbolism and abstraction.
About our curator: Yvonne Force Villareal began her public career in the arts in 1995 as the President and Curator of Yvonne Force Inc. (YFI), a company backed in part by the late Mr. Laurance S. Rockefeller and established to support young contemporary artists by acquiring/lending their work. In 1998 YFI produced their first public art project, a performance by Vanessa Beecroft, titled “SHOW” at the Guggenheim Museum. The success of this work inspired Ms. Force to be the co-founder of Art Production Fund. Prior to establishing YFI she worked as Assistant Director at A/D gallery in Manhattan. Force graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design in 1988 with a degree in Fine Arts and has served on the Board of that Department since. She has served as a Board member for White Columns, the alternative gallery in Chelsea, since 1995 as well. Currently, Force is earning an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies at New York University, and is currently finishing her thesis. Ms. Force has been a guest lecturer at many institutions including: Frieze Art Fair, Yale University, SVA, FIT, and Art Center in Pasadena.

SEED is now on view through August 10, 2018.

My curatorial practice has always been driven by the relationships that I have built with contemporary living artists, who have shaped & informed my thinking as an academic, curator & writer. I am beyond grateful to have worked with such an esteemed group of critical voices to fulfill the final chapter of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, a unique project that aimed to disrupt the Euro-American centric art historical canon, through a rigorous process of self reflection of what it meant to be a museum in the 21st century. At the same time, this introduced new pathways for rethinking curatorial scholarship that reflected upon a rhizomatic global existence & incorporated that spirit into building a bold collection. This project has finally arrived at its conclusion after 3.5 phenomenal years & I am ever so grateful to all of the artists whose works & concerns served as the basis for my curatorial project “But a Storm Is Blowing from Paradise,” & “Una Tempesta dal Paradiso,” two distinctive site responsive exhibitions, whose legacy is now cemented permanently within the remarkable Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s collection in NYC, where it was first presented to the public in 2016, before traveling to Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Milan, this spring. I am absolutely delighted to have worked with the finest curatorial, conservation, communications, development, publications, registrar, design, education, installation & visitor service teams @guggenheim @ubsglobalart @gam_milano @_aoumm_ @altofragile_studio as well as extremely gracious external educational affiliates & public program colleagues, gallery partners, press & independent journalists across the globe who took the time & care to cover both shows, thank you all!
