Opening on 18 July 2018, the exhibition ‘Remembering Tomorrow: Artworks and Archives’ will mark the 25th anniversary of the gallery. The first group show to be held in the #WhiteCube #HongKong space, it includes 36 artworks contextualised by a selection of previously unseen material from the gallery's extensive archives. Featuring painting, sculpture, photography and drawing, ‘Remembering Tomorrow: Artworks and Archives’ draws attention to the broad scope of White Cube’s exhibition history, which has taken place in six locations across three continents. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀
.
Included in the show is ‘Thursday, January 7, 2016’ by #FredTomaselli. The artist’s interventions onto the front page of The New York Times highlight the reality, tragedy and absurdity of global politics through the addition of abstract, sardonic and cosmic imagery. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀

Opening September 16!
"Duane Michals: The Portraitist" presents the first comprehensive overview of inventive portraits by this influential photographer who, in the 1960s, broke away from established traditions of documentary and fine-art photography and is still creating original work today. Michals is widely recognized for his eye-catching portraits of actors, artists, musicians, writers, and other public figures. Striving to articulate his own distinct style and vision while distinguishing each subject’s individual personality, the artist empowers his sitters to express themselves in their own environments and through improvisation. He is perhaps best known for the sequences he assembles to convey personal visual narratives, often with handwritten messages and poems added to the photographic print surface. The exhibition spans nearly six decades, featuring more than 125 portraits collectively highlighting the artist’s expansive toolkit — sequenced images, multiple exposures, reflections, uncommon vantage points, collage, hand-painting, and other techniques.
On view at the Crocker Art Museum until January 6, 2019.
📷
"Duane Michals: The Portraitist" is curated by Linda Benedict-Jones, and the traveling exhibition is organized by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions, Pasadena, California.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
January 7, 2015. Rangers exhibit their riding skills as they return to base at Zakouma National Park, Chad, after weeks on elephant patrol. The park lost nearly three quarters of its elephants in the decade up to 2011, due to raids by Janjaweed rebels and poachers from Sudan. Since then - with the park under new management - Zakouma rangers, helped by intelligence from nomad groups, have eliminated poaching almost completely.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The trade in poached ivory is financing rebel armed militia across Africa. Various national armies actively trade with these groups, and centuries-old Sudanese poaching cartels participate in sending large bands of armed men across borders to kill elephants. Patrols of dedicated rangers around the continent are on the frontline of attempts to thwart the trade.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A selection of award-winning photography from the World Press Photo Contests 2016 - 2018 that portrays our natural world and human impact on the environment, will be showcased in a special exhibition at the Scheepvaartmuseum 24 July - 6 September 2018.

The annual World Press Photo Contest rewards photographers for the best pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism. Whether entered as singles or stories in one of the eight categories, an independent jury of professionals judges the photographs in terms of their accurate, fair, and visually compelling insights about our world.

Gallery Exhibit opening tonight at 7PM! NYC Parks is pleased to present the exhibition: The Birds of Richmond County. Artist Herb Smith’s interest in painting wildlife, especially birds, goes back to his youth. His ability and technique to capture the structural differences, colors and unique traits of birds by layering oil paint brings a satisfying depth to his work. Paying homage to masters of the Dutch Renaissance Age such as Van Eyck, Van Der Wyden, Rembrandt and Vermeer, his realistic approach creates an accurate quality that tantalizes the viewer’s perception in a way that is true to life. .Exhibit runs from January 14 – February 29, 2016 in The Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center, Conference House Park

298 Satterlee Street, Staten Island, NY 10307

Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Free admission

Our fully-illustrated and comprehensive catalogue raisonné on Lee Krasner’s “Umber Paintings,” (five of which were on view at the gallery between November 9, 2017, to January 13, 2018,) is now available through the link in our bio.

Painted between 1959 and 1962, Krasner’s “Umber Paintings” were realized during one of the artist’s most ambitious periods of creative production following the sudden and tragic loss of her husband, Jackson Pollock. During this time of newfound solitude, Krasner moved into Pollock’s studio at their home in the Springs, East Hampton, which enabled her to experiment on large canvases for the first time. In addition to the increase in scale, this period was also characterized by a further commitment to ‘allover’ compositions, an emphasis on gesturality and an engagement with the individual psyche.

These fiercely composed abstract forms, with their explosive brushwork and a refined, nuanced palette of umber, cream and white, convey a distinctive rawness and intensity that was unprecedented in her oeuvre. The paintings remain lauded as the artist’s most psychologically evocative works.

This ambitious publication includes two interviews with Lee Krasner and an essay by art historian Dr. David Anfam, Senior Consulting Curator of the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver and curator of the 2016-17 exhibition Abstract Expressionism at the Royal Academy, London.

ACT OR PERISH! (A RETROSPECTIVE) (2016)

The catalogue of Metzger's first extensive overview: divided into sections—each of which is accompanied by a critical text—corresponding to those presented in the exhibition, the publication provides systematic insight into an artistic oeuvre considered as one of the most important in the 20th century (with texts by Mathieu Copeland, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Yoko Ono, Hermann Nitsch…).

If the retrospective, which started at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Torun before travelling to Oslo, was presented in distinctively different formats—the former providing audiences with a wide overview of Metzger's career and works, including attention to his early years of political activism and engagement and concomitant radicalization, and the latter focusing upon deeper researched aspects of the artist's production,—the exhibition catalogue provides readers with a rich array of theoretical contributions, including a conversation between Dobrila Denegri and Yoko Ono, Ivor Davies, Hermann Nitsch and Jon Hendricks, as well as Metzger's own writings.

The contributors Pontus Kyander, Andrew Wilson, Mathieu Copeland, Dobrila Denegri, Leanne Dmyterko, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Manuel Olveira take up different aspects of Metzger's work, from the artist's early political activism, to his experimentation with painting to his drafting of the manifestoes for Auto-Destructive Art, providing us with an invaluable and much awaited document for consultation in contemporary art.
Published following the eponymous exhibition at Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun, Poland, from November 8, 2015, to January 17, 2016, and the joint exhibition “Gustav Metzger in Oslo – Extremes Touch and Liquid Crystal Environment” at Kunsthall Oslo and Stiftelsen Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, 2015/2016.

The artistic oeuvre of Gustav Metzger (1926-2017), in which the concept of Auto-Destructive Art and the Art Strike hold a central role, is considered as one of the most important in the 20th century.

NOMA presents “Past, Present, Future: Building Photography at the New Orleans Museum of Art”, on view September 7, 2018 through January 6, 2019. One hundred years after the museum’s important first photography exhibition, Past, Present, Future celebrates NOMA’s long-term commitment to photography.
_____________________
Seven years after the museum opened, NOMA held its first photography exhibition. The 1918 presentation, organized by renowned photographer Clarence H. White and the Pictorial Photographers of America, marked the beginning of NOMA’s long-sustained relationship with the medium. In the early 1970s, the museum decided to dedicate resources toward building what is now knows as one of the finest photography collections in the country.
_____________________
Organized as a three-part presentation, the first chapter in “Past, Present, Future” will recreate a portion of the 1918 show, presenting vintage prints of photographs included in the original exhibition while replicating a turn-of-the-century photography gallery. The second portion of the exhibition will include a number of recent acquisitions by NOMA, highlighting the museum’s present commitment to expand its representation of diverse cultural perspectives from around the globe. Finally, the third gallery will present a glimpse into the future by showcasing works that have been promised to the institution, signaling how the collection will continue to grow and evolve. #nomapastpresentfuture

Finally caught the exhibition at ICAS yesterday evening. It's been really exhausting in January because of inescapable work commitments and a whole bunch of other stuff, so it felt so nice to finally be able to catch the whole show.

This project has been many many years in the making; it is the brainchild of Gilles, Elizabeth, and Padmasana Foundation, an eventful collaborative effort that contemplated history, culture, and Buddhism. I felt very honoured then in 2016 to be part of this project and I feel just as honoured now to be part of this exhibition.
Our friends from Padmasana visited Singapore last week to collaborate and exhibit alongside with us in this exhibition. I regret being unable to spend more time with everyone during their stay in Singapore, and I really regret missing out on Padmasana's performance during the opening reception! However, looking around at the fantastic paintings, sculptures, and videos created by the Padmasana team brought back fond memories of my time spent in Muara Jambi. Their creative energy and seeking spirit is truly unparalleled and I am amazed once again.
Thank you Gilles, Ian and Gerald for organising the whole show! Thank you pak Heri for your words of encouragement and advice despite your tight schedule! Thank you Ms Yusnawati for your delicate and beautiful gifts of tikars! And last but not least, thank you Padmasana Foundation, Mr Borju, Mr Roy, Iman, Amen, Putra, Cholidin and Fitra for being inspiring as you always are! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
"To Leave Home is Already Half the Journey" runs until 21 Feb 2018, at Institute of Contemporary Art Singapore. Dr Imran bin Tajudeen from NUS will also be conducting a lecture on ancient Straits Melayu artefacts as well as the Hindu-Buddhist temple compounds that span Muara Jambi on 6 Feb 2018, 7-9pm, LASALLE Block F 201. Do come! ✨ #conjecturechicken

Sterling Ruby discusses the influence of Bruce Nauman in his approach to art. -
Ruby: “I like the idea that what I’m doing is an abstraction of something I am experiencing in real life, but in
all actuality, I think it’s my visual description of it.”
-
“(…) and then I saw that Bruce Nauman exhibit at MoMA and it just changed everything. I realized
there was something that was slightly past the 1970s that really made a lot of sense.” The exhibition seemed to put into perspective Ruby’s experiences from growing up in a farming community in Pennsylvania, where most men were very narrowminded and condescending: “I wanted to do what Bruce Nauman was doing, I wanted to work with materials that were already existing… but I also wanted to work with my hands, I wanted to make things and I wanted to push these things together.” In continuation of this, Ruby’s ambition
became to make work that dealt with the psychological experiences of his past as well as his future.
- “I think I’m an all-around artist.” Ruby chooses specific mediums because they “translate the
idea more than another medium would.” His work ethic, as well as his personality, has made him a highly productive artist, and he believes that he can identify how successful a work is by how manic it feels: “I’m a kind of manic, paranoid person, and working at a bunch of different mediums, and always having a place to go helps.” - Sterling Ruby was interviewed by Marc-Christoph Wagner at his studio in Los Angeles, California in January 2016.
-
New work from his series ‘WIDW’ and ‘DRFTRS’ will be on view at the gallery from
7 September—20 October 2018.

The above image is a detail from one of the artworks in the exhibition, "January 19th, 2015," an oil, pastel, acrylic and photo transfer on panel by Leslie Barlow.
Castile was an African-American man who grew up in Saint Paul. On July 6, 2016, he was fatally shot by a police officer in the nearby town of Falcon Heights after being pulled over for a traffic stop. He was 32 years old. In the months after Castile’s funeral, artists across the community were motivated to make art, some of which they gave to his family–-gifts intended to help the people closest to Castile process their grief and start to heal, while also bearing collective witness to the tragedy of his untimely death. The family, moved by this generosity, approached Mia with a desire to publicly share these artworks, which includes video, sculpture, posters, paintings, and quilts.

As a part of this exhibition, Mia is providing a Quiet Space for visitors who need a space to reflect after viewing the exhibition. This space is available daily during regular museum hours. In support of this exhibition, Mia is also co-hosting events intended to promote learning and healing on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings through the end of July. This exhibition closes on July 29, 2018. Learn more at artsmia.org.

Situated on the border between east and west, Yugoslavia became a melting pot of architectural ideas and styles during its time as a socialist republic. This beautifully brutal tripod is a detail from the Avala TV Tower near Belgrade, and features in a new exhibition, "Towards a Concrete Utopia: Architecture in Yugoslavia 1948-1980", running July 15 – January 13, at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Drawings, models, photographs and films celebrate Yugoslavia's futuristic ideals made solid by the grey stuff.
