A strategy consultant who has handled projects such as 'Half of a yellow sun' (the movie) based on Chimamanda Adichie's book, ALARA the luxury concept store and others. Launched in 2016, ART X Lagos is West Africa's 1st international art fair, which was designed to showcase the best and innovative contemporary art from the African continent and neighbouring countries around Africa, and to widen Nigeria's connection to the art scene across Africa and internationally. Through its contribution to the increased visibility of African artists, ART X Lagos aims to reinforce the visual arts as an important component of the creative industry in Nigeria and Africa and to position Lagos as an emergent cultural capital on the continent. The debut edition of ART X Lagos welcomed 5000 visitors to the civic center, to see the works of over 65 artists drawn from 10 countries around Africa. The fair featured specially curated projects, and a vibrant performance platform for artists and musicians. One of the highlights of the fair was a seven meter long colouring wall designed by Nigerian born artist, Karo Akpokiere. The 2017 edition of ART X Lagos will deliver a broader, dynamic program of exhibitions, talks and interactive projects. It will hold from Friday 3rd of November until Sunday 5th November 2017 at the Civic center in Victoria Island, Lagos.

He made three paintings of “Tutu”, the locations of all of which had been a mystery the past 40 years until a recent discovery.

The works became symbols of peace following the clash of ethnic groups in the Nigerian–Biafran conflict of the late 1960s. “The sitter is Yoruba and Ben Enwonwu was Ibo, so they were of different ethnic tribes,” said Eliza Sawyer, a specialist in Bonhams’ African Art department. “It was an important symbol of reconciliation.” Enwonwu was from a politically-connected Ibo family and his father was a traditional sculptor. The painter stumbled upon his most famous muse by accident. “He would go around local villages and sketch local scenes and figures, and he encountered this young woman whom he thought was just entrancing and requested to paint her, not knowing her stature,” explained Sawyer. “She was a little taken back by the request,” she added. “It is the peak of the artist’s career, there’s also the sitter’s status as a princess and thirdly the painting had been lost. That all creates an awful lot of mystery.” The rediscovered painting was last displayed at the Italian embassy in Lagos in 1975 and was bought by the father of the north London family, where it was found, during a business trip. “It was pretty much regarded as his prize work,” explained Peppiatt.” #WeAreRoyal #BHM #BlackHistoryMonth

.
As a leading pioneer of Nigeria’s modern art movement, Ben Enwonwu is regarded as one of the twentieth century’s most renowned visual artists. Cementing the importance of modern African art at the time of looming independence from colonial rule, Enwonwu articulated a language and vision for African art that was defined by its own rules rather than the limitations of Western art historical models. Educated at Ruskin College, Oxford, and the Slade School of Art, London, Enwonwu was influenced by European modernism and the bourgeoning philosophies of the Negritude movement, which placed emphasis on Africa’s cultural history and artistic traditions as a defense against colonial oppression. Enwonwu’s work reflects a sophistication and technical mastery of form while celebrating the richness of Nigerian culture.
In his Negritude series, which the artist undertook in various forms over many stages of his career, Enwonwu uses the female body as a metaphor to celebrate African culture. This watercolour depicts a central female figure in a monotone scheme, accentuated by the colorful foliage that surrounds her in hues of green, yellow and blue. Enwonwu focuses on the shapes and contours of the subject’s body, with crossed legs and elongated limbs. Her head leans on her left hand for support, as if caught in a moment of quiet contemplation. While Enwonwu often included several figures in his Negritude series, he chose a solitary figure for this particular work. The figure’s sculptural depth demands immediate presence in contrast to the flattened planes of the background that surrounds her.

Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye MFR, popularly known as King Sunny Adé, (born on the 22nd of September, 1946) is a Nigerian musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and important figure in the West African musical style jùjú. One of the first African pop musicians to gain international success, he has been classed as one of the most influential musicians of all time.Adé was born in Osogbo to a Nigerian royal family from Ondo, thus making him an Omoba of the Yoruba people. His father was a church organist, while his mother was a trader from Akure. Adé left grammar school in Ondo under the pretense of going to the University of Lagos. There, in Lagos, his mercurial musical career started.
Sunny Adé's musical sound has evolved from the early days. His career began with Moses Olaiya's Federal Rhythm Dandies, a highlife band. He left to form a new band, The Green Spots, in 1967. Over the years, for various reasons ranging from changes in his music to business concerns, Sunny Adé's band changed its name several times, first to African Beats and then to Golden Mercury.
King Sunny was influenced by the legendary Tunde Nightingale (early Juju pioneer extraordinary) and borrowed stylistic elements from Nightingale’s ‘So wa mbe’ style of juju.
He founded the King Sunny Ade Foundation, an organization that includes a performing arts center, a state of the art recording studio, and housing for young musicians.
He is a visiting lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile- Ife and recipient of the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.

Winnie Owens-Hart for #PIAbadasswomen. Here we see this great American artist and educator in Lagos, Nigeria in 1977, representing the American delegation at FESTAC 77 — also known as the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture — which at the time was the largest pan-African gathering to ever take place. More than 16,000 artists and performers took part in the month-long festival.
.
When recent #PIAbadasswomen featured artist @Simoneyvetteleigh reposted this image from the @Festac77archive, she wrote, “When I was 18 I visited Winnie Owens-Hart’s studio at Howard University and over the course of the afternoon she taught me techniques I still use today. Startling to see her here in Marilyn Nance’s amazing archive of photos documenting FESTAC77. If only I could go back in time that’s one event I wouldn’t miss.”
.
Photo 📷 © Marilyn Nance, photographer for the North American Zone of FESTAC 77, who writes:
“This picture shows the African American ceramic art genius Winnie Owens Hart learning hand built indigenous pottery methods from Iya Alamo in Ipetumodu, Oyo, Nigeria.”
.
Nance also includes a passage from Moyo Okedij’s book, ‘The Shattered Gourd: Yoruba Forms in Twentieth-Century American Art’ which explains the significance of this event in Winnie Owens-Hart’s life and work, which has influenced generations of ceramics students since then: "In 1977, Winnie Owens-Hart went as part of the American delegation to the Lagos based black jamboree FESTAC. For her it was a momentous journey back home to Africa, a returnee from the ‘land of no return.’ When she arrived in Lagos, she was fortunate to make the acquaintance of Agbo Folarin, an artist based in Ile Ifę who was part of the Nigerian host's contingent to FESTAC. Folarin took her to a village called Ipetumodu, near Ile Ifę, where a lively community of professional potters was thriving. There she saw several new techniques beyond everything she learned in America, and she decided to return to Nigeria to initiate herself into the Yoruba pottery tradition, by joining the apprenticeship system of the Yoruba potters."
