🔹Are you targeting more the upper back or the lower (lat thickness) depends on how much you bend over and also where you’re positioning your elbows.
🔹If elbows are constantly close to your body, you’ll hit lats, if you pull them outside, you’ll hit upper-mid back more.
🔹Take a strong position, bend over depend on your goal, stay stiff, pull with the elbows, contract hard and control the negatives.
🔹T-bar rows is amazing exercise if done properly. 🙂💪🏻

As some of you guys know, I struggled with having that connection with my back but one thing among others things that worked was pre-exhausting before hand. Dumbbell Pull Overs is one of those movements I use on my Horizontal Focus Pull days. I try to go as heavy as I can while really controlling the stretch and contraction part of the exercise. This really helps me activate my Lats so that when it’s time to do my heavy rows, I feel it exactly where I should. Give this technique a try if you struggle with establishing a good muscle to mind connection with your back!!! 💪🏽😎💯

Regardless, you’ll be incorporating many muscles in the upper back. Despite most experts saying either deadlifts or bent-over-rows are the kings of back development, I consider these the staple of any back workout. Feel free to disagree.

The vertical pull and the horizontal pull are two main exercises that you need to include into your workout routine to develop a powerful back. But what are the differences between the two in terms of muscles worked and activated? Although both exercises work your back, core and biceps they target the muscles of your back differently. Pulling exercises overall are great in preventing shoulder, neck and back pain. Improve posture and balance out your push movements.

VERTICAL PULL (Lat)

Exercises such as the chin-up/pull-up are great examples of a vertical pull. It works your lats, rhomboids, mid and lower trap. But unlike the horizontal row it is more lat focus due to the angle of the pull.

HORIZONTAL PULL (Rhomboid/Trap)
.
Inverted rows, bent over rows are all good examples of horizontal pull. Horizontal pull exercises are a true antagonistic (opposite) movement to the bench press. Although the chin-up and other vertical pulls are important, horizontal rows targets specifically the muscles and movement patterns that oppose the bench press. The horizontal row targets the lower and middle trapezius, rhomboids, middle deltoid and posterior deltoid. It targets the lats as well but to a lesser degree.

Often times I see people make the mistake of only including the chin-up/pull-up (vertical pull) as the only exercise that they need to build a healthy powerful back and that is far from the truth. Lacking horizontal pull in the program can cause muscular imbalances and shoulder issues later on down the road. Moral of the story: include horizontal rows into your program, do it right and your shoulders will thank you later.

Here’s a look into this mornings training. While a few exercises didn’t make the cut, here’s my top 3... Those who know me well know in the past I’ve spent on average 2.5 hours in the gym each sesh... And would wonder why I plateaued so much.. Overtraining? Definitely!! Now that I’m focused again on making my fitness a top priority that’s changed as I’ve gained knowledge. I shoot to make every workout 20-40 minutes and ensure to never surpass an hr. So many times on cheat and back day I’ll have to go back a second time to work my tri’s and bi’s since they don’t fit that time frame.. welp, it seems to be working! 💪🏽 -

That twist in the body is only increasing your risk of injury and certainly not increasing the opportunity for growth in your Back Muscles.

✅ Go for a full stretch on every rep and finish with your elbows up by the side of your body. This will ensure you are using your Lats (Large Back Muscles) to pull the weight, along with engaging your Rear Deltoids (Back Of Shoulder) at the top of this movement. This can be a great exercise to undo any muscle imbalances you have as it is performed one arm at a time. 💪🏼

One thing I tried to focus on is to not grip the bar too tight so that my forearms and biceps don’t take over which in turn will cause my lats to fatigue first. I keep my fingers firm so that the bar doesn’t slip out while keeping my forearms turned off then driving my elbows down below my chest while keep my chest up. We all done exercises in the past that we never felt. Trust me I’ve been there. But through research and finding new ways of training, I’ve found this is the best way for me to feel every reps of this exercise as well as other back movements. If you’ve struggled in the past with this particular exercise, give the tips I’ve provide a try. It definitely worked for me and it may work for you. 💪🏽😎🙏🏽

The Lats (broad back muscle) are a big powerful muscle that attaches to your pelvis, connecting to the thoracolumbar fascia then reaching up and spanning across the T-Spine and eventually grabbing the inferior angle of your scapula and humerus.

It function to medially rotate, extend and adduct the arm. When restricted can decrease ROM in flexion, abduction and external rotation. All movements that are required to allow you to reach overhead or to perform and overhead press. Regaining mobility in your Lats will improve overhead position.

It can also refer pain in the inferior angle of the shoulder blade, cause mid back pain and lower back pain near the abdomen. If it is highly restricted with trigger points it can also cause pain along the inner arm all the way down to the pinky side of the hand and the 4th and 5th fingers.
.
To release this muscle follow the video. Make sure you treat the entire length of the muscle from top(close to the arm pit) to bottom. Find tender points and work on it for 30 secs to a min. You may need to visit this muscle twice a day for a few weeks for it to fully release.

Off season no matter how clean it is. Simply because every show I do is up in the air prior to doing it. I never know when or if I’ll be doing a show again. And in my personal opinion, I want to look good year around for every day life. Not for when I’ll be getting back on stage next and stressing about are my delts big enough? Did I add enough width to my lats. Competing isn’t everything to me. And one of the main reasons I do it is simply to promote my suit business. Don’t get me wrong. I love the challenges that come with prepping for a show. But I’ve always said how it’s probably one of the most expensive hobbies I’ve ever done!

It has been a long road of Physical Therapy but I’m finally getting back to the training that I fell in love with. My passion is to teach people and share every bit of knowledge I have to equip people to better them selves- not only physically, but mentally as well. These are just a few snippets from my back workout yesterday. I like to utilize these exercise to add width and size to the back. -
The first exercise shown is a pull variation that I use to target the lats. I like to have a slower than normal eccentric (muscle lengthening) action so I can feel the individual muscles I’m trying to work stretch. Then for the concentric (muscle shortening) phase of the exercise I like to squeeze and hold for a second or two at the peak for good measure.

The second exercise shown is another pull variation called a row. This exercise is meant to target the Lats and the lower Traps, while also getting a little Rear Delt action. As with the previous exercise, I like to execute this one the same when it comes to the eccentric and concentric phases of the lift- slow and controlled with a squeeze at the peek. .

These are the large “V Shape” muscles on the sides of your back that attach to your arms. As you raise your arm is raised (like in catching a clean or pushing the barbell overhead) this muscle needs a certain amount of stretch.🏋🏼‍♀️

The classic prayer stretch (like the yoga “child’s pose”) is a great way to hit the lats. You can also reach your hands to the right and left and drop your body down at a diagonal. This will increase the stretch felt to one side of your back and can be an efficient alternative to improve the flexibility of these muscles.👍🏼

As with any mobility tool you use, always recheck your barbell positions after to see if this is an efficient mobility tool for your body. Not everyone needs this stretch, so using a check/re-check method can be an easy way to see if this is right for your body to help you with achieving better technical positions with your barbell lifts!🏋🏼‍♀️

Calorie surplus & adequate protein - standard. If you aren’t eating to grow then you aren’t going to build any muscle.
Progressive overload - also standard. Lift more & more over time, make your body work harder. Lift in a manner that disengages your forearms; learn to pull form your elbows & use your fingers as hooks.

Time under tension, squeezes & controlled movements for maximum muscle damage.
Other exercises which will help strengthen your back :-
Chin ups. Lots of chin ups (engage your glutes & abs while you do these). Belt-less squats; learning how to maintain tension & activating your lats during a squat will be a game-changer. Engage your core to better activate your lats. Train your back or incorporate exercises that target muscles in your back at least 2-3 times per week. Rest - best gains I’ve ever made were when I wasn’t training 7 days per week. You grow, get stronger & recover on days you don’t train too.

Do your shoulders hurt when doing pull ups? No matter how hard you try, your shoulders always tend to internally rotate, and cause you chronic-pinching-shoulder pain. -
Ever thought about distributing the load differently on your hands? -
Depending on how you’ll distribute the load on your hands while doing pull ups (or any pulling movement) the results will vary. -
✅✅✅Giving an external rotation cue to your hands, therefore pulling with the external part of it, will ultimately give an external rotation cue to your shoulders, helping you perform the exercises well - also engaging your lats more.

❌❌❌As opposed to this, placing the weight internally will give your shoulders an internal rotation cue, which could cause you to not be able to keep them locked back, and potentially pinch at the top. No locked shoulders = no lat engagement, so besides hurting yourself, you could also end up not making back gains.

❌ A common mistake I see people making when using the Lat Pull-Down is going too heavy and using too much momentum to move the weight. Not only is this likely to give you an injury, but you are putting little to zero stress on your Lats (intended back muscles for this exercise).

✅ My suggestion is you going slightly lighter than usual and focusing on keeping your torso still, whilst only moving your arms. This will put more stress on your Lats and increase the likelihood for hypertrophy (enlargement of muscle tissue).

1.Club Cast
Clubbell double head cast or pull-overs work your upper back/lats, shoulders, rotator cuff, abs, and forearms.  Bring both clubbells behind your head with your elbows pointed to the ceiling.  Pull them over and in front of you at chest height.  You should feel your scapula depressing.  Keep your core braced.  Exhale as you pull-over and inhale bring the clubs behind you.  2. Double Club Rotations
This exercise is great for rotator cuff and forearm strength.  It is also a mobility exercise that can be performed before a workout.  For these you want to use lighter clubs – no heavier than 10-15lbs.  Keep the head of the clubbell down.  Rotate behind opposite shoulder and finish with the clubbell in front with your elbow tucked in.  3. Iron Cross
The clubbell iron cross is an exercise that targets the middle shoulders, forearms and abs.  Bring two clubbells overhead with their heads pointing down behind your back.  Then bring them out to your sides with arms parallel to the floor.  Keep your core/abs engaged.  Inhale as you bring them behind your head and exhale as you complete the cross.

When you feel that you can no longer hold the static position at the bottom go right into normal tempo Pull Downs for as many reps as you can till you feel that burning sensation in your Lats. I’d recommend at least 2 Sets to develop that muscle the mind connection if you perform this technique in the beginning of your session. If you perform this towards the end, do as many sets that your body can take to completely fatigue till your next pulling session!!! The stronger the muscle to mind connection, the better results you will achieve!!!💪🏽😎🙏🏽
