A German Luftwaffe anti-aircraft team protecting the perimeter of an airfield full of Messerschmitt Bf-109s in the summer of 1939. A German Luftwaffe Obergefreiter (Corporal/airman) mans the 7.92mm MG-15, while a couple of privates hold the tripod and another scans the horizon with his binoculars.
_
The German MG-15 was an early World War ll machine gun that was ideal for an early anti aircraft gun because it could fire over 1000 rounds per minute through a 75 round double drum magazine as seen in the photo. It was used extensively in German Second World War aircraft.

___________________
This blue bolter—the Messerschmitt Me 209V1, piloted by chief test pilot Flugkapitän Fritz Wendel, achieved a new absolute world speed record for an aircraft on April 26, 1939, hitting 469.22mph (755.136kph). Remarkably, just 3 weeks earlier, Wendel had survived a crash in Me 209V2 while attempting a practice run for the record attempt.
.
The Me 209 was developed purely for speed. A modest airframe with stubby wings, it was powered by a modified Daimler-Benz 601ARJ twelve-cylinder inverted-vee liquid-cooled engine rated at 1,800hp, but capable of 2,300hp for brief periods. To minimise drag, traditional radiators were replaced by a fully internal evaporative cooling system; where water from engine cooling would travel to the wings and be cooled by partial evaporation via tiny holes in the wing surface, before flowing back into circulation. At only 7.24m (23’ 9”) in length with the cockpit set well back, the Me 209 was essentially a flying power plant, and by all accounts, very tricky to fly; being generally unstable in flight with heavy and unwieldy controls, and having a tendency to nose down suddenly without warning. Only four of these little brutes were built, prototypes V1 to V4. And while an attempt was made to convert V4 into a fighter, the same performance could not be maintained after modifications and it was shelved. Today only the fuselage of V1 remains, and is on display at the Polish Aviation Museum in Kraków, Poland.
.
The official world speed record for a piston-engine aircraft set that late spring day in 1939 by the Me 209V1 ‘D-INJR’ (pictured) would stand for 30 years. The engine that powered it; the Daimler-Benz 601 and the later DB 600-series engine models would go on to make their own mark in history in the World War that soon followed that historic flight.

The second Sherman to make it on this list is the Canadian Made "Skink". A very oddly custom made turret mounting quad 20mm Polsten Automatic cannons on a Grizzly Tank chassis (Canadians alternative name to the Sherman)

Originally intended to serve as a self propelled Anti-Air tank, it saw more action against infantry than any aircraft. Production of the vehicle started in 1943, but cancelled after 3 were built. It saw service from February through March of 1945 and never engaged Aircraft as the Luftwaffe was decimated by this point in world war 2. Instead it saw great use against stubborn infantry and forcing surrenders.
Unlike the previous Sherman Monstrosity "T53", this provided great usage. (Apologies if you cannot find Part 1, this is a revival of an old series I posted a couple years back. Ask to be tagged for first Part)

4:34 AM; Luftwaffe aircrafts began to drop bombs on sleeping habitants of Tczew. 4:40 AM; Another town, Wieluń has been bombed by German air units. 4:45 AM; Kriegsmarine warship Shlezwig-Holstein opened fire from its cannons on Polish garisson on Westerplatte, Gdańsk.
Polish soldiers on Westerplatte received an order to withdraw after 24 hours. Yet they fought for 7 days, inflicting heavy losses to invaders.
Radio stations across country broadcasted that country is under attack. Around 2 millions German soldiers poured into Poland from multiple directions, immediatly spreading terror and death. Polish Army fought with ultimate heroism, but no country in Europe was prepared for superior German military strategy called Blitzkrieg.
World War II has begun.

Valletta was built in 1566 by The Order of Saint John and has been invaded and attacked many times due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean Sea. But nothing compares to the Siege of Malta during the II World War, when the Axis attacked the Island which was severely bombed by the Luftwaffe and the Regia Aeronautica, the German and the Italian air forces, respectively. Nonetheless, Valletta stands and resists.

The airfield was originally constructed in 1934 and 1935 by the Luftwaffe as a staff and technical college, Luftkriegsschule 2 Berlin-Gatow, in imitation of the Royal Air Force College at RAF Cranwell. The initial personnel came partially from the Naval Academy Mürwik. Opened on 1 April 1936, the air force college was renamed Luftkriegsschule 2 on 15 January 1940. Its satellite airfields were Güterfelde and Reinsdorf. Airborne flying training ended in October 1944, due to fuel shortages. From 5 March 1945, aircrew officer cadets were retrained as paratroops, for ground operations which had very high casualties.
Clues to the airfield's original use survive in the barrack block accommodation, each block of which was named after a famous German airman of the First World War, with the airman's bust above the entrance door. The architect was Ernst Sagebiel, an architect who worked full-time for the Luftwaffe and also designed Tempelhof Airport. Other surviving features during the entire period of the airfield's use as RAF Gatow (1945–1994) included light bulbs in the main hangars, many of which dated from the 1930s.
