Check in day today - weight did not change again from last week. It feels very frustrating but I gotta keep pushing through. I ended up getting a really good amount of sleep last week, and I feel a lot leaner than I previously have, so I just gotta trust the process and keep going - my body does tend to be super stubborn at times during prep.
WEIGHT: 129.8 lbs - teeny bit up since last week
MEASUREMENTS: waist 27.25”, hips 38”, thighs 22.25” (no changes from last week)
MACROS HIGH (2 days): 160c/40f/130p
MACROS LOW(5 days): 115c/50f/135p
* dropped 5g carbs (low days), dropped 10g carbs high days, and 5g in fat.
CARDIO: 3 HIIT Days, 8 intervals
TRAINING: 1 General Upper Body, 1 Mass Shoulders, 2 hot yoga (at @thefoundry - free class code in bio), 2 MET [isolated lower body days are still out for now]

In summary I found the shift quite straight forward, shopping is simple... just avoid 2/3rds of the supermarket!
.
My diet is approximately:
* 60-65% Protein and Fat (animal sources)
* 35-40% Vegetable / Nuts
.
My observations so far:
* Increased strength, energy and endurance
* Reduced body fat / increased muscle mass (I actually weigh more) * Improved skin quality / reduced inflammation
* Improved digestion / gastrointestinal health
.
All in all a good move and I am enjoying the benefits, I'll definitely stick with my latest lifestyle adjustment!

Most of the time I can’t get to bed on time after Hunter goes to bed and can’t get enough sleep before I wake up in the morning to train. Sleep is so important for progress and weight loss, so I’m super irritated that it’s just not happening for me at this time in my life. It sucks, but it’s my life right now. Anyway, other than that, prep is alright - haven’t strayed from my macros but have missed some workouts. I have a smile on my face but I’m still tired AF.

Gaining muscle and shedding body fat are two ways of improving body composition. However, the steps to accomplish them are a little different. ⁣

In order to gain muscle, your resistance training will be top priority. You need that stressor in the gym to stimulate muscle growth. Of course, you should make sure you’re eating enough calories and protein to build lean body mass. How big of a calorie surplus you want to be in will depend on how fast you want to gain muscle vs. how much body fat you’re comfortable putting on. The greater the surplus, the faster the muscle gain, but that also comes with more body fat. Conversely, if you have a smaller surplus, you’ll be able to keep the body fat gain to a minimum, but that means the muscle growth will be slower as well. ⁣

Shedding body fat requires a consistent calorie deficit first and foremost - no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Make sure your nutrition is dialed in, or else you’re just spinning your wheels. Then, lift weights on a regular basis to help retain as much lean body mass as possible (so you’re not losing both fat and muscle when dieting down). ⁣

Both processes require a heavy dose of patience. Gaining muscle is actually a much slower process than shedding body fat, so try to set some performance goals in the gym and expect to see changes over the course of several months and even years rather than mere weeks. ⁣

So long as you’ve got enough size to play with, losing body fat will cause you to look more muscular. Just make sure you’ve gained enough muscle mass in a Calorie Surplus, before dropping into a Deficit. 👍🏻 Dropping into a calorie deficit prematurely, could result in you looking skinny not strong! ❌

This is why I often advise beginners (with relatively low body fat levels) to focus on building muscle before losing fat. 💪🏼

Anyway, the fat loss process is much easier than muscle building. Make sure to spend the majority of your year building muscle, and only worry about losing fat for something comes up. Example: wedding, holiday, photo-shoot, birthday, etc. 📆

Weight is up this week, however, I just took a look back at my Portland prep and I was .2lbs lighter than my current weight at 10 days out, and I still have over 5 weeks left of this prep; I can come in tighter. This past week/weekend was ROUGH! Hunter had a fever all weekend, and I went over on my fats over the weekend - a little bit of emotional eating. For some reason I just couldn’t say no to the pb, but I logged it and I know that’s why my weight is up. Do I feel guilty? Yeah. However, I just gotta reevaluate my mental mindset and kick it into gear again. Hunter has thrown me for a loop this past weekend, so I was not feeling 100% myself - and neither was he! Anyway, I’m obviously not perfect and I do mess up my macros here and there, but I know what it takes to get back on track and that’s what I’m going to do.

Through out all of intermediate and most of highschool I was bullied and teased because I was self conscious about my body and would hide it in a jacket EVERY DAY. In mid 2012 I had decided that I had enough and that it was time for a change! By the end of my senior year (2013) I had lost 50lbs and had gained a good amount of muscle mass! Come September I get into a severe accident and I believe i broke a rib or two (never went to the doctor). I couldn't workout or run because if my heart rate or breathing increased a little I would get some really bad pain where I believe I broke a rib or two. Within 5 months I had gained 30lbs and had lost most of my gains. In March of 2014 I had decided that it was time to get back in it so I joined @kauaiathletic ! After a couple of years of consistency I put on a good amoint of mass and strength. In 2016 I had a few buddies of mine that were entering @stingreyclassic808 and I was inspired and wanted to enter a competition for myself layer that year. (Not going to lie I had no idea what I was doing on my first prep and I was only suppose to do that one..little did I know that I'd be addicted to doing them!) After that first competition I could never go back to the way I use to eat, I had to track what I ate or I wouldn't feel right.. You can say that's when the REAL change started!!
What am I trying to say with all of this?
1) It's never too late to start
2) You will be knocked down but get back up!
3) You never know where life will take you but grind like your life depends on it and I promise it will be heard!

There are a lot of misconceptions about clean eating🍏 vs. flexible dieting🍕 out there, so I'd like to take a moment to clear the air.

Clean eating involves an all-or-nothing mindset. You think of foods are being either good or bad, permitted or forbidden. It makes sense, then, that consuming said "forbidden" foods would induce feelings of guilt and remorse. Indeed, the research shows that clean eating is associated with higher body mass, more yo-yo dieting, more binge eating episodes, plus greater anxiety and body images issues.

On the flipside, flexible dieting is far more moderate. No foods are off limits, and a heavy emphasis is placed on portion sizes.

Flexible dieting is correlated with the absence of overeating, lower body mass, and lower levels of depression and anxiety. Plus, it predicts better long-term weight loss - and isn't this what most people ultimately strive for?🤔

However you choose to eat, understand that trying to be stricter is not always going to work. Rather, get comfortable with moderation and become a master of portion control. I think we’ve become accustomed to eating and overeating because things tastes amazing or we crave the sneaky sugars they put in everything.
It’s food addiction.
