ASMSA is a free public boarding high school for gifted math and science kids of all income levels. It relies heavily on charitable donations to fund its programs.  ASMSA was the turning point for Dan, and it allowed a boy from a small town farm in Arkansas to see a bigger future for himself and to dream bigger dreams.
ASMSA offers girls and boys an opportunity to exemplify the classic American story… if you are smart and if you work hard at your education and career, you can achieve anything.  ASMSA teachers have at least a master's degree in their field, and 45% have a Ph.D.  All courses are taught at the Honors level or above.  ASMSA also offers a number of AP-level courses and courses that go beyond the AP level, especially in mathematics.  We hope to help a future Dan Fredinburg, or a future Katherine Johnson (Hidden Figures). We see a gift to ASMSA as an investment in the brain trust of our country. #ASMSA #LiveDan #adventureawaits

This question usually doesn't need to be asked. Science, as a social institution, didn't exist until the XIXth century, when we identify its first attempts to establish itself as something worth a space in society. Obviously, attempts at what the "core" of science is dedicated to, which is the pursuit of provisional truthful models about reality, date way back to Ancient times. But the folks who study science didn't find an institutionalized form and, therefore, an organized manner to carve itself a space in society until quite recently. As you can see, the boundaries between the many expressions of RESEARCH are not that clear-cut. We could say mathematics and formal logic are fields of theoretical inquiry. But what about some sub-areas of physics? They are not entirely empirical, but certainly not absolutely abstract. The same can be said for the Natural X Social continuum. Around that "core" that produces provisional models about reality, we have the meta-sciences: philosophy, history, sociology, anthropology, economics, etc OF SCIENCE. Empirical and theoretical research, here, are the "first level objects" for these meta-fields.
Around all that, we have the mediators between this "hard core" and everybody else: science journalism, science education, science popularization, science policy, etc.
The result of all this, which, believe me, is a complicated network of interacting organizations and people, is the PUBLIC PERCEPTION of science and PUBLIC DECISION-MAKING about science.

That, as you know, can go well and not so well.

Here is the very first look at the project and exhibition “Wall of Humanity”, which I invented some weeks ago and, with the help of talented and well-meaning people along the way, we made something worth sharing.

My idea with this project was, to whatever extent possible, educating people, which is the reason why the project has been hanged at my school walls; I believe schools are a place to learn and not only sciences nor mathematics, but humanity. To learn about respect and diversity, but to also raise awareness about the pain you can make others feel with a hateful attitude. To raise empathy and, to any extent, bringing people together. To make my school a place where people feel a little safer and happier. I wanted to celebrate diversity in an artistic attempt so that everyone would feel welcome and let their light shine bright. I wanted to spread awareness on homophobia, the importance of women empowerment, race, sexual abuses, and mental health issues.

Although some extracts of the project – as my latest post – will be shared on social media, the original exhibition as I said has been hanged at my school walls, so that perhaps its message helps someone feel a little stronger, happier or safer when passing by those corridors full of ignorance and hatred.
I hope you will like it as much as I do; I’ll be truly happy if any of the conveyed topics of the project mean for you just a tenth part of what it has meant to me putting it together.
Thank you so much to those whom contributed to any extent to give life to my vision.
Here is to a new beginning.

Part of the problem is that before seeing the beautiful but more importantly speculative results/predictions that the mathematics supposedly entail one finds themselves overwhelmed by the lustre of the theory. Overwhelmed by the champions of the field. And before we know it we have created a generation who grew up believing the hypothesis of the theory as being determined laws of nature. But there's a problem in all this you see. The landscape of ideas that populate the theory make it impossible to falsify. And if one assumes the position on the other side of the table, by the board, one has to be over cautious of not letting the ideas seduce the minds any further. (Have been reading up on comparisons between Anthropic vs Mediocrity vs Fine tuned Universe in regards to the Pioneering theories of sciences.)

Poster for Neolithic Childhood. Art in a False Present, c. 1930 @hkw_berlin #nodeberlinoslo
Curated by Anselm Franke and Tom Holert. “The stock market crash and mass unemployment, political polarization, the industrialization of perception, the violence of colonialism: “c. 1930” was a time of crisis in modernity. For the artistic avantgardes in Europe, the contemporary condition also became problematic; the impositions of the present led artists to break out into an imaginary realm of the archaic and the exotic— seeking out alternative origins and points of departure for humanity. New sciences and the fields already undergoing profound changes— such as ethnology, archaeology, psychology, and mathematics—served as resources. “World art” became a key concept for revising history and modernity. Taking its cue from texts by the extraacademic art historian Carl Einstein, an exhibition and conference will thematize the upheavals, openings, and contradictions that became manifest in art and the humanities from the 1920s into the 1940s. The “Neolithic Childhood”—a concept used by Carl Einstein to characterize his understanding of Hans Arp—seemed to be a helpful fiction through which to critique the present.“

He served as Chair of the Department of Mathematics from 1969-72. Jogi was an active member of the math faculty until his sudden passing, having delivered his last lecture the previous day. Jogi’s name will be recalled by countless USF students from the past decade as a co-author of the textbook used for courses in college algebra and precalculus. He will be remembered for his tireless work ethic and his desire to be an effective educator. He was acknowledged for the latter with an Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1997. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lata, and his three sons.

As I said earlier, “In a world of vanity, knowledge is the best form of mutiny. While everyone else is focused on their looks, rebel and hide your face behind a fucking book.” Here’s the deal: At some point, you’re probably going to get ugly — not everyone is destined to age gracefully — but your knowledge will always stay with you. Like an incurable STD, knowledge can be passed around, but never truly passed off. And, when you share it, you can do some incredibly cool shit with it. Like French mathematician, author, physicist, philosopher, AND gambler, Émilie du Châtelet. Born in 1706, Émilie was a bit of a daddy’s girl, which proved to be beneficial since her father was quite influential. Early on, he supported Émilie’s academic ambitions by arranging one-on-one tutoring sessions with the best minds and mentors he could find. By the age of 12, Émilie was fluent in five languages and exceptionally efficient in math and science. So much so that her mother feared she was becoming too smart and tried to have Émilie sent to a convent — didn’t happen. (“Mom, my brain is nun of your fucking business.”) Like a true rebel, Émilie used her math skills to pay the bills, mastering card games and using her winnings to further her learning. In 1737, Émilie wrote a paper regarding heat and light, explaining what we now know as infrared radiation. In 1738, this paper was published, making her the first woman ever to have a scientific article featured by the Paris Academy of Sciences. In 1740, she released her first book entitled, “Lessons in Physics.” In 1747, she wrote a book on mathematics that contradicted the equations previously set forth by French astronomers (fun fact: she was right). In 1749, thanks to her language skills, she completed a full translation of Newton’s “Principia,” eventually, spurring a scientific revolution in France. Sadly, the same year, she died of complications from childbirth. (Ugh, kids ruin everything.) Well, you just learned some fucking history. You’re welcome. Now, go hone your own math skills with today’s happy hour drink specials. (Don’t forget to carry more than one and also factor “time remaining” into your overall total.) #SUNDAYSCHOOL

--
Tanahat (Tanadeh) Monastery is an early 8th century monastery and was one of medieval Armenia's most important religious and cultural centers.
-
Its main church, Surb Stepanos (St. Stephen), was built between the years 1273 to 1279 under the patronage of the Proshian family. The church has a cruciform interior with annexes in its four corners; those flanking the main altar on the east are two-story. The exterior is rectangular with a slender 12-facet drum and a dome with a tent-roof spire. The Proshian emblem, an eagle clutching a lamb in its talons, is carved on the southern wall of the church.
-
The single nave 13th century Surb N'shan (Holy Sign) Church adjoining the monument from the north has a highly expressive bas-relief carving on the lintel over its entry, depicting a remarkable hunt scene. In 1970 excavators found a single nave church with two annexes southwest of the Monastery, a number of secular buildings and numerous tombstones, dating back to the 13th–14th centuries. Also found was a gavit (enclosed area) with a square plan, to the west of the church.
-
Some scholars believe that the Monastery housed Gladzor University (founded in 1282), the most prominent educational institution of its day in Medieval Armenia, where Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Theology, Geometry, Astronomy, Chronology, Miniature Painting and other subjects were taught. Others insist that Gladzor University's location is still unknown (sources make a reference to Aghberts monastery).
-
Famous medieval students of the university included the historian Stepanos Orbelian, the philosophers Yesayi Nchetsi and Hovhan Vorotnetsi, the architect Momik and the miniature painters Toros Taronatsi and Avag.

Feat: @bludhavens.darkknight ⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Dick Grayson met May Parker when he was on a trip to NYC and decided to go on patrol for himself, May thought he was a criminal and got into a brawl with him.
⠀⠀
2. May and Dick surprise visit each other, they both strive to one-up each other on surprise visits. It's gotten to the point where Dick pulled her out of school, and May tackled him by jumping off a rooftop onto the sidewalk below and landed on him.
⠀⠀
3. Due to the only two-year age difference between Dick and May, they have definitely tutored each other in their classes. May teaches Dick Foreign Languages, Sciences and Robotics, while Dick helps May out in Mathematics and U.S. History.
⠀⠀
4. May is a natural acrobat due to her own powers, and Dick is a perfectly raised acrobat in his own right. And both of them are still learning and developing new skills from each other, but neither one of them will admit it when the other points it out.
⠀⠀
5. May has always wanted to meet the Batman, and see the Bat-Cave, just to make her father jealous. Dick doesn't understand her obsession, and when May starts asking, he stares her down until she shuts up.

April 25, 2017, marks the two-year anniversary since our son, Dan Fredinburg, lost his life on Mt. Everest. In Dan’s memory, we (Paul & Cathy Fredinburg) have decided to personally fund the “Dan Fredinburg Innovation Lab”, will contain a Maker’s Space/Robotics Lab as well as a Computer Science Lab, at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA). These two Labs will be located in the new 21,000 square foot building called the Creativity and Innovation Complex (CIC), which should break ground later this year.

As some may recall, last year the Dan Fredinburg Foundation donated $50,000 to ASMSA. The momentum from this gift, followed by further donations from family, friends, and other supporters, allowed ASMSA to raise $100,000, and ASMSA was able to name an entire floor in the new CIC in Dan’s honor, as the “Dan Fredinburg Technology Center”. Our new Innovation Lab will be located within that Dan Fredinburg Technology Center.
It was important to us to show our personal gratitude and support for ASMSA, since ASMSA changed the direction of Dan’s life. In those years, we would not have afforded a private school which would have been equal to Dan’s talents. ASMSA provided a free top quality education for gifted math and science students. ASMSA enabled Dan to go on to better colleges, and as a result to better jobs and to a challenging career at Google. Dan achieved personal and financial success, and he was able to fulfill his dreams of traveling and exploring the world. His success allowed him to reach out and help others. Dan had a great life, and he packed the most he could into every minute. For this, as parents, we will always be grateful. Born to parents who did not believe in education for daughters, Somerville was principally self-taught. Her first husband, Samuel Greig, was hostile to her intellectualism, and it was only until after his death she pursued the study of mathematics. Thankfully, her studies were encouraged further by her second husband, surgeon William Somerville, whom she married in 1812. Somerville's success in a male-dominated world of science and mathematics was consolidated by her paper on the violet rays of the solar spectrum (1826) and her edition of Laplace's La mécanique céleste. The latter in particular brought her much acclaim and she was elected as an honorary member of the Royal Astronomical Society. Major works in the fields of mathematics and science followed including, the immensely successful On the Connection of the Physical Sciences (1834). ⠀

Holistic mathematics—it has a ring to it, don’t it? Hopefully it’s a ring to wake you up.
The uninitiated will look at this pic and won’t comprehend how a bunch of lines & shapes encompasses within a circle represents the cosmos—and most of us, having been in public schooling in math class trying to pass geometry, had no instruction on how geometric shapes symbolize esoteric metaphysical principles.
But what do I always say?
“Form encodes meaning.”
Geometry is one of the Seven Liberal Arts & Sciences—more specifically, one of the sciences of the Quadrivium (Latin for “four-way path”). The metaphysical science of geometry, as a practical study of “form encodes meaning”, is a bridge to psycho-spiritual studies.
In the top half of the circle, you can count three lines—the number 3/trinity has many symbolic meanings on its own, but the meaning I would pay most attention to is the three fundamental forces of existence: A yin force, a yang force, and a middle balancing force.
Notice how the amount of dimensions, lines & shapes increase in the bottom half of the circle—this symbolizes the material world, fraught with parameters, limits, enclosures, and details. The simplistic threefold nature of spirit is grossly reflected into a complex emanation of physicality—a demonstration of fracture or fragmentation/fragmentality that occurs during the “fall of man.” So, in moving from the bottom half to the top half of the circle’s diameter, you reduce division and move towards holism—another word for singularity. Also, if you understand emanation, then the Kabbalah & its demonstration of spirit-to-matter process will be clear to you.
If masonry is your birthright, then this is the science behind all those shapes & tools the architect uses to build the temple. Do you do you math? ⚫️

* "I’ve spent much of the past eight years pursuing my passion for mock trial, where I’ve argued close to 100 cases. I’ve also worked with the Georgia Innocence Project helping to exonerate those who have been victims of the legal system and wrongfully convicted of crimes they didn’t commit.

I spent this past summer on campus researching theoretical problems in graph theory with the Mathematics Department. I’m currently working on writing a theoretical treatment of First Amendment Constitutional law and the American public sphere. After graduation, I hope to spend a year in Budapest, Hungary studying theoretical mathematics at the Alfréd Rényi Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences before possibly heading to further graduate school and law school."

This is the largest college at MSU, with almost 50 majors, 25 minors, and over 25 graduate degrees. The college covers the humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and social sciences. Finally graduated from International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) with Bachelor Degree of Economics (Honours) and honoured to be in the Rector's list top 22 students in the class. .

It was never easy. 5 years full with ups and downs. Almost gave up at one point. Had to pick up myself everytime. But alhamdulillah, I did it. .
It all started when I initially wanted to do political science, the dream to work in United Nation. The love-hate relationship with Mathematics. Also the realization that I am stronger in my arts subjects. .

However, I was offered to do foundation in Economics and Management Sciences. So I enrolled for the foundation with the hope of being able to change course later on. Time passed by and I guess the intention went away. Haha. .

I did really good during my first semester in my Degree. Obtain 3.724 cgpa for my first semester. But it all went down hill after that. Hahaha. But managed to be on the dot to obtain the Rector's list. Hehe. .
Economics was never my first choice, nor second or third. It was never crossed my mind to do Economics in my life. Never. But Allah has plans for me. He granted me the bless to obtain my Degree in Economics. Alhamdulillah. .

The memories I made was just amazingly beautiful. I miss the freedom to discuss intellectually. I miss the Islamic environment of IIUM. I miss the people. I miss the late night discussion. I miss the assignments. I miss the lectures. I miss the craziness during lunch break. I miss consultation. I miss presentation. I miss becoming a student. I just miss everything about University. .

Life after University has been challenging for me. Maybe in another post. But this post is to celebrate another milestone in my life. .

Dear Self, we did it! I am so proud of us. Thank you for staying strong for the entire 5 years of tertiary education journey. .

Sincerely,

Fadhli Bin Hj Ahmad

I really liked the logic and thinking behind modeling problems, but I also liked learning about financial markets and how they worked. There’s a term in economics called hedging, which essentially means protecting yourself against downside risk – when you buy two assets, for example, and one asset goes down, the other one should go up so that you’re still protected. I guess you could say I wanted to hedge some vocational risk by completing degrees in both economics and mathematics. Now, I’m what you would call a financial engineer, if you want to think about it that way.
.
My current research focuses on how to use machine learning to understand financial asset pricing. We want to evaluate the right sources of risk and we want to use data and technology to manage it even better. It may not sound as glamourous as building something you can use, but it’s just as important, especially when it comes to making important financial decisions or avoiding a financial crisis. When I was younger I liked math, and I think the biggest reason I liked it was because I liked the challenge. I wanted to study something I had to work at, and you need to work hard to solve these problems.
.
Our department is very interdisciplinary, and I like that because we look at challenges from all sides. I work with people from a variety of fields – business, computer science, the social sciences – and I think that’s important in managing risk. You need all of those things when designing policies or solutions to bigger social problems. I always tell students to adopt an interdisciplinary mindset when you approach anything. Take some classes in the stats department or the computer science department and try to understand the field where you want your questions answered.
.
I think risk management is relevant for everyone – the better you manage risks, the better your decisions are.
.

Ali Bontrager, Gamma Upsilon-Wichita State: A Kansan through and through, this is Ali’s second year traveling as a CDC! Though she studied biological sciences, her time as a CDC has impacted her greatly, and she’s decided to pursue a career as an academic adviser in higher education. ✨
Sarah Gornik, Tau-Iowa: Sarah is from Illinois, but can’t wait to get back to Des Moines to help out that community after working as a CDC. She studied communications studies and has fond memories of collegiate gift exchanges/hot cocoa events and working with the National Federation of the Blind in Iowa. ✨
Tori Tinman, Eta Mu-Lake Forest: While at Lake Forest University, Tori majored in Spanish. She is the first Eta Mu-Lake Forest initiate to become a CDC, and she’s particularly excited to learn the history behind each chapter that she visits. ✨
Anna Long, Tau-Iowa: Anna is originally from North Oaks, Minnesota, and studied graphic design while at Iowa. In the future, she hopes to use her graphic design education and skills to work in the music/entertainment industry.

Alexis Thuston, Gamma Upsilon-Wichita State: Alexis studied secondary education in mathematics and is from Wichita as well. Her ultimate dream is to become a dean of a university after pursuing a degree in higher education, but during her time as a CDC, she hopes to help other sisters realize their potential and how to reach that through Delta Gamma. .
