Helen Maroulis is a Greek-American freestyle wrestler who competes in the women's 55-kg and 53-kg categories. She was a gold medalist at the 2015 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada and a gold medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil she became the first ever American to win a gold medal in women's freestyle wrestling at the Olympic Games!!! 🌟🌟🌟 “For younger athletes - women, especially, if it's a male-dominated sport - I'd say be very careful to just be true to yourself. I spent a lot of time trying to emulate how a male wrestler was. They're tough, they're very confident, they don't show a lot of emotion, and they push through everything. That's not me at all. I'm a wrestler but I have emotions, I'm sensitive. When I stopped trying to be something that I wasn't, I felt like I was freeing myself up to find ways to make it work for myself.” 🌟🌟🌟 She wrote a beautiful personal essay on fear and her experience becoming a female wrestler. Link in bio. We love you @helen_maroulis - thank you for being you. #wcw
