For years I’ve been obsessed with this country and it’s unique culture. Not only did I conquer just visiting this beautiful place but did it solo.
More importantly I wanted to spread awareness about Myanmar’s Muslim populations current state. ‼️Ultra-nationalists monks led by firebrand preacher Wirathu have forced nearly 700,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh. Buddhist extremists are forcing these people out of their towns by burning their mosques and entire villages. They are using religion to justify their violence. Although Muslims only make up 4% of Myanmar’s population, extreme measures are being taken to ensure these individuals are displaced out of the county.
The drive behind these horrible acts is the fear that Buddhist traditions will be lost as well as Islamophobia and just pure ignorance.
These individuals already have very little and now are forced to surrender their lives or suffer the fatal consequences.
Here are some links and info to donate and help! 🙏

That's why I have always wanted to travel far from home, away from my comfort zone and into a completely new environment. One where slurping your soup is appropriate, where religion is a lifestyle and where no traffic rules lead to the safest driving skills. I remember my first trip to Southeast Asia where spotting monks walking on the side of the road, in temples or anywhere really was the highlight of my day. From Myanmar to Cambodia they just fascinated me, just like pointy straw hats in Vietnam and saris in India. Each culture is unique, different and beautiful, and what they have to teach you about life is more than anything found in a text book. This is simply something everyone has to experience in their own way. The travels I share are mainly for inspiration. You are the only one who can take these and turn them into reality. @heritagesuites & @secretretreats

There’s a legacy of love, a red thread, that hasn’t been written about before now. Or it has, it’s just scattered, with pages missing, and parts buried. There’s a legacy of love, a red thread, that hasn’t been written about before now. Or it has, it’s just scattered, with pages missing, and parts buried. It isn’t codified in any one singular sacred text, it isn’t institutionalized within any one religion or sect. It isn’t handed to every little one born to this world as a secret personal bible, as a promise sealed already inside the heart, that love is where we have all come from, no matter who we are.
:::
There’s a legacy of love that women throughout time and in every culture and tradition have been devoting their preciously brief lives to realize. Like, Enheduanna, the first known author in all of recorded history, the woman whose love-drenched poetry to the ancient Sumerian goddess Inanna written in roughly 2285 BC would later inspire the cadence and stanzas of the prayers and psalms in the Old Testament.
:::
Or like, Marguerite Porete, the 13th century French mystic whose book on divine love was considered such a masterpiece, such a profound contribution to theology, that it achieved near scripture status even long after her name was removed from it, even long after she was burned at the stake for having written it, for having dared to suggest that god is love, and that she, Marguerite, is nothing except love.
:::
History has allowed us to easily inherit the stories of God, a divine He, and the holy men, monks, priests, and male mystics whose lives sought to translate that love. But what we’re still learning to see, and to hear, what we are still piecing together and unearthing the buried pages of, (like the pages to Mary Magdalene’s gospel,) are the stories of the Goddess, a divine She, and the human women that sought to live that love in their female bodies so that the world might remember that the feminine is just as sacred.
:::
We can only know who we really are by remembering the love we have always been. It’s time for us to remember how holy wise and powerfully present the divine feminine is. This to me is the red thread. This to me is the legacy of love we can remember now, together.

Since it’s Holy Week, I would love to post a picture of the beautiful book binding of the Lindau Gospels!✨😍💎🔸♦️💠📕📜 A couple of months ago, the Morgan Library and Museum had an incredible exhibit on Illuminated manuscripts.📚 What amazes me even more than the beauty of these treasures is the amount of work that was put into each of these illuminated manuscripts! During the early medieval period, some of these manuscripts were made by monks in monasteries where some dedicated HOURS and HOURS under candlelight in order to make these incredible works of art!😱✨💎🎨 The attention to detail is astounding, that my eyes filled up with tears as I took in the profundity of it all.😩❤️😭✨ These books were made to inspire such a deep faith among Christians! #books #gold #gems #rubies #emeralds #Jesus #LindauGospels #art #treasure #artwork #museum #exhibit #Christianity #history #religion #fancy #elaborate #binding #TBT #picoftheday

S-21 was once a high school that turned into 1 of 150+ secret execution centers during the Cambodian Genocide. Scholars, doctors, engineers, artists, monks... basically anyone who showed signs of intelligence or religion (and their families) suffered very dark times under the Khmer Rouge regime.
From 1975-1979, innocent people were deceptively led into torture prisons or enslaved in harsh agriculture fields. Two million people in four years lost their lives.
The horror of what extreme ideology can drive people to do. I hope that we can learn from our human history to help us move past the malfunction of the mind that creates the illusion of separation and feel more deeply into our true interconnection to everyone & everything. My heart is heavy for the suffering this beautiful country had underwent. ❤️🇰🇭

Have you ever heard of bloodletting?
Bloodletting is one of the oldest medical practices. It originated in ancient Egypt, spread to Greece, and then the rest of the world. Physicians would open a vein with a lancet (pictured here) or a sharpened piece of wood to drain blood from the body. If you were lucky, leeches would be used instead. During this time, doctors were commonly monks or priests but the Church despised the procedure because of the contradiction between religion and science. For this reason, barbers took on the responsibility and began performing cupping, tooth extractions, and sometimes amputations. If I were you, I’d be careful what barber you go to. You never know what he or she will be cutting!
.
One notable example of bloodletting was George Washington who had this procedure done when he developed a fever and respiratory distress. His three physicians drew about 40% of his blood. He died on December 14, 1799 by what today is called epiglottitis and shock. His medical treatment helped the future of medicine significantly by showing that bloodletting could be dangerous and potentially fatal.

Ironically the origin of this dresses is owing to capuchin monks who designed and spread them among the indians who were used to be half-naked.

Hi there! My name is Álvaro Laiz (@alvarolaiz), I am a Spanish documentary photographer and visual artist. My work deals with narratives where traditional culture, nature and industrial development converge. Since 2014 I have committed myself to exploring the links between our distant past and our near future through a multidisciplinary study of hunter-gatherers populations, revealing the profound connection between natural world and ourselves.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These days I´m taking over the @worldpressphoto Instagram feed and I will be sharing my series “Wonderland” (2012-2014), made in San Francisco de Guayo. Delta Amacuro. Venezuela.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Delta Amacuro, eastern Venezuela, is one of the most inhospitable places in the world. Since 8.500 years ago Warao indians have turned its 20.000 km² of water canals and swamps into their home. Despite the strong acculturation they have suffered because of colonialism Warao people have managed to keep their culture and way of life deeply rooted into this environment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Before the late 20th century, the term berdache was widely used by anthropologists as a generic term to indicate “two-spirit” or transgender individuals. In Native American societies, berdaches played an important role both religiously and economically. They were given specific roles in their religion and were not expected to support their family like a male would, but rather they were required to do some of the women’s work and portray the behaviors and clothing of a woman.

This week, the 6 selected European talents of the third edition of the 6x6 Global Talent Program are taking over our feed! The program aims to connect visual storytellers around the world, particularly those that might not be well known outside of their own region, to a global audience.
:::
:::
:::
:::
We can only know who we really are by remembering the love we have always been. It’s time for us to remember how holy wise and powerfully present the divine feminine is. This to me is the red thread. This to me is the legacy of love we can remember now, together.
:::
Join me and the mystical @shewhois on May 29th (the full moon) at 3p

Found peace up high in the hills at temples made of pure gold, being blessed by monks, and even being able to sit and talk with them. We spent a whole hour sitting with a monk & a few other students so they could practice their English — all while being able to ask the monk everything about his life. His do’s, his dont’s, and learning more about the teachings of Buddha. Insanely humbled and an entirely different outlook on life. Ready to come home & share my experiences in person!
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
In previous posts, I mentioned some crazy changes in my life added. We added @frenchienamedmilton to the family, and another crazy change is that sometime last year, I found peace with the teachings of Buddha. Not to say I don’t believe in any other religion, including my former, but the teachings of finding Buddha has drawn me close — to find the true meaning of life, to accept life for what is, and to not live in fear of the latter. What is, will be. To come to peace with that, is liberating. Again, can’t wait to come home. A lot of myself was found on this trip. And I’m ready for another expansion for our agency/business back home. My soul has been rejuvenated. Who’s ready?

The religion of Islam is a religion of moderation between excessiveness and negligence, it is the straight path. And within the book (the Quran) and the Sunnah (the prophetic narrations), there are many religious texts that command adherence to this middle path and forbid extremism.
-
These texts either mention extremism explicitly, or often with wordings that indicate its impermissibility such as prohibiting aggression, oppression, extravagance, delving too deep into matters, or harshness. The following are just some examples of such texts.
-
1. Allah Azzawajal says in the Qur'an:

Oh people of the scripture, do not go to extremes in your religion and do not speak anything except for the truth. [Sūrah al-Nisa, 4:171]

2. Allah Subhanahu WaTala also says in the Qur'an:

Oh people of the scripture, do not go to extremes in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before you - verily they misled many and themselves strayed from the correctness of the way. [Surah al-Mā’idah, 5:77]

In both of these verses there is a forbiddance for the “people of the scripture” – the Jews and Christians – from going to extremes in their religion. And every statement in the noble Quran directed towards the people of the scripture also includes this nation (the Muslims) because it is this nation that is the primary recipient and addressed of this book. So when Allah forbids them from going to extremes, we are even more so forbidden to go to extremes.

The people of the scripture had many forms of extremism. From them is going to extremes regarding some of the creation like the Christians did with ‘Īsá (Jesus) and his mother when they fell into extremism (by worshipping them) and like the Jews did with Uzayr and the calf (when they worshipped them). Also, they went to extremes in matters of self-professing piety like what the Christians did when they invented their priesthood and positions of monks for which Allah never sent down any authority to do so. And there are other forms of extremism they committed.

One of them is ornamented with an abstract fleur-de-lis pattern and his face is overlaid with a leafy limb. The other is made of polygons and wears a loosely painted childish smile and eyes. These two monks represent variations on religious symbolism and belief systems. The whole painting is filled with mystical symbolism and icons of superstition and magic as well as shapes and animals that resonate with personal meaning for me. The piece is a meditation on my own beliefs about these subjects. I’ve always had a rocky relationship with religion and spirituality. I was raised Presbyterian and indoctrinated with the belief in heaven and hell. I thought there was someone watching me who was prepared to send me to hell if I did not follow these specific rules. It was terrifying. The witch in the lower right is connected to this fear. I was afraid of the dark and obsessed with death and very creative and sensitive so my imagination and my dreams were vivid and overwhelming horror filled experiences. As I’ve made my way through life since childhood I’ve reckoned with these fears and the tendency toward morbid thinking. I’ve learned about meditation and what it means to direct your spirit to meditate on positivity rather than negativity. I’ve created my own ideas about this life and what it means and how to make it beautiful and joyful. Joseph Campbell say “Follow your bliss” and that pretty much sums it up for me. In recent years my art has become a meditation on joyful creation. I have made a point to tap into my playful nature and make what fills me with joy. This painting was integral to my process of understanding how my beliefs drive me. I think it’s beautiful and making something beautiful from imagery that is loaded with mixed feelings is a metaphor for how I try to lead my life. Thanks for reading this if you got this far. .

Saint Robert of Molesme (1028-1111, feast day on April 29) was born as the son of a nobleman in the Champagne region of northern France, and entered the Benedictine abbey of Montier-la-Celle near the city of Troyes at age fifteen. After studying theology and philosophy there, he rose to the office of prior of the abbey. Two hermits from a group of monks that had settled at Collan went to Rome and asked Pope Gregory VII to grant them St. Robert as their superior, which His Holiness did in 1074 and St. Robert started serving as their spiritual leader. Shortly after, he moved the small community to Molesme, in the valley of Langres in Burgundy.
Although only consisting of huts made by branches in the middle of the woods, the Molesme monks quickly became known for their piety and sanctity, and St. Robert's reputation as a holy man grew. In 1082 St. Bruno of Cologne came to Robert seeking advice to found the first Carthusian monastery.Towards the end of the 11th century, the community had grown tremendously, with dozens of priories for both monks and nuns, funded by various donors and benefactors in the region, who also sent their children to the Abbey for education.
In 1098, St Robert left the Abbey together with 21 of his fellow monks, among them Saints Stephen Harding and Alberic of Cîteaux, to settle in a desolate valley in a deep forest south of Dijon, where they founded the Cîteaux Abbey, in order to follow the Rule of Saint Benedict more strictly. They formed a new branch eventually known as the Cistercians, and the Abbey of Cîteaux is the mother house of the order, today belonging to the Trappists (the Cistercians of the Strict Observance). St. Robert died in the year 1111 and was canonized by Pope Honorius III in 1222.
The painting, the Mystical Espousal of Saint Robert of Molesme to the Virgin Mary, by Giovanni Odazzi (1663-1731), depicts a rare scene in art where Our Lady is placing a wedding ring on the finger of Saint Robert.

Most of them start their journey in monkhood to get an education (the wats offer monks free education which is often the only way people who are lesser off can go and study) and it is fascinating knowing what they plan to do in the years to come. A lot stay on and live the life of a monk, and a lot leave after a few years to pursue further education.

Before Islam came to Baltistan in the 14th Century, it was the land of Buddhism which had arrived here in the 4th Century through the monks from Northern India. Many monasteries were built during the era and the religion continued to flourish after the Tibetan conquest of the region in the second quarter of the 8th Century.
I visited the famous 9th Century Manthal Buddha Rock today which resides in a small village near Skardu and was deeply fascinated by the rich history of the region.
After Islam, Buddhism gradually started vanishing and the places of worship fell into despair. By the 15th Century, no Buddhist was left in Baltistan and the Muslim population wreaked havoc on the Buddhist legacy, destroying religious buildings and monuments. More recently, in 2007 the Taliban in Swat defaced the biggest Buddha sculpture in the world. Though this site has been relatively untouched, there needs to be more awareness about the abundant history we are surrounded by in order to preserve it for the future generations.

I can almost hear the bells from Santiago. Feel anxious today as I set off towards one of the Highest points of Camino. Im hoping my ear ache will be ok. It will be as challenging as first day two years ago in French Pyrenees. #cruzdeferro at over 1500 m high and Snow is on the mountains ahead. Starting to think my Penney's leggings won't be warm enough. As I leave Rabanal del Camino, the beautiful horse follows me along by the wall. Reminds me of the horse Tír na nÓg from film into the west. So peaceful and still. Rabanal was a very special place. Met an old German man who was able to heal back pain from peregrinos by placing hands over shoulders. The kindness on the road is infectious. It doesn't matter what religion or race. Everyone is supporting each other. I also got invited to an Easter fiesta with the monks from this remote village. I met Paul Murray , a kind English host from albergue. He features in bbc2 documentary with the celebrities . I won't be taking any busses , once health allows it. Thanks for all the well wishes and messages. I promise to reply later. But now I turn off internet and enjoy the nature. Misconception 4: Islam permits Terrorism

This is perhaps the biggest misconception about Islam, especially given the constant stereotyping by the media. The media portrays as a terrorist any Muslim who fights regardless of whether they fight justly or unjustly, or whether they are oppressing others or being oppressed. So the question that comes to mind is: Does Islam encourage terrorism? Certainly not! Islam totally forbids and condemns the misguided acts of vigilantes that target innocent civilians.

Of course, Islam does not remain silent in the face of oppression, injustice and humiliation. Any religion or civilisation that does, would never survive — but it certainly does not condone attacks against defenseless men, women and children.

Allah says: “Fight in thecause of Allah against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. Allah does not love transgressors:’ Qur'an 2:190

Even during times of war, Islam lays down strict rules. For example, a Muslim is not allowed to harm or kill those in a peace treaty with Muslims, non-combatants, women, minors, servants, the blind, monks, the elderly, those physically incapable of fighting, and the mentally ill. In fact, Muslims are not even allowed to damage crops and vegetation during times of war! These noble ethics were, and still remain, unheard of in any army.

The Qur’an clearly demonstrates the seriousness of killing an innocent person, and emphasises the value of human life. At the same time it also instructs Muslims to treat people of other faiths with kindness. “If anyone murders an (innocent) person, it will be as if he has murdered the whole of humanity. And if anyone saves a person it will be as if he has saved the whole of humanity.” Qur’an 5:32 “Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion, nor drove you out of your homes. Indeed, Allah loves those who deal with equity.” Qur'an 60:8

A “dzong” is the word they use in Bhutan for a fortress/monastery. These beautiful structures with giant walls reveal a lot about Bhutan’s unique culture. First, it is a defensible fortress--a holdover from days when wars were still happening. You can’t see from the picture I took here, but the walls descend further, so there’s no way for attackers to climb up or get inside. There’s tiny slits around the Dzong where people inside can shoot arrows at attackers on the outside! 🏹I’ve seen 10 fortresses like this in throughout Bhutan, and they’re usually built on a hillside with a strategic view of the valley, and, if the view isn’t so great, there’s a secondary watchtower in a better position. But what are they defending? I am just learning, but there’s a unique confluence of activity inside each Dzong: besides a military fortress, today, Dzong’s are homes for monks, and a spiritual center, but they also house all kinds of offices—think of it like the combination church, DMV, a civil court, an architecture planning office, and anything else related to the city’s administration. It shows how there is a lack of separation between “church and state”… In Bhutan, their philosophical and “religious” beliefs (some say Buddhism is not a religion, but a philosophical perspective), are integrated with the government, not separated. 🎊More Bhutanese are beginning to dress like Westerners, but when you visit the Dzong, you are required to where the traditional dress of the Bhutanese people. To foreign eyes, it makes for a colorful and exciting experience—you feel like you’re in the 16th century watching the activity inside, even though people might be there to get architectural plans approved, or to get a divorce, or something else that seems very “modern” to us. Ah yes, and the chilis… I had to include the chilis drying in the sun. Bhutanese add chilis to almost every dish (even in their rice); certainly there will be chilis in every meal! The chilis are dried outside, typically on the roof of homes. 🏠 Drying can take a month! ☀️I think I’ll be adding chilis to dishes when i get back home! 😀

To me, there is nothing more peaceful than waiphra (ไหว้/wai- a prayer gesture, pictured in the first photo. ไหว้ผระ/waiphra - to pay respect to Buddha/monks) & setting intentions... We did this multiple times throughout the temple & inside the big Buddha... I find myself to be a spiritual person, I don't follow any religion but I do love to send good vibes out in to the universe 🌌& despite all the tourists I love visiting these sacred places, especially when the monks gather for prayer🌙

To anyone who is visiting sacred spaces of any kind, please be respectful... for places like Buddhist temples you are not allowed to enter unless your shoulders & knees are covered... please be respectful & follow these rules. SACRED. SPACE. 📿

On another note, tomorrow is our last day of holidays! I'm a little sad, but mostly excited to get settled in to a year of dedication 🌻

Question: Are you religious, spiritual or neither? 🔮(We should all learn, no matter what we believe in, to be kind and accepting of others beliefs. Unless it harms others)

Much love 💕

Like a crystal drop
Light is often found in corners hidden in plain sight

Many a times wanderers are lost, rarely ever found
The ones forever lost are the happiest of the bunch

On trails high above the ridges of mountains
Trails carved in the air by mystics,
Are found clues and signages leading to treasures of miracles
That are often in abundance with these lost wanderers.

Directionless by choice, floating in the air like white pearl feathers
These musers are filling the world with a freedom so pure
That dares to teach you utter abandon.

But the highest and the finest of the lot
Are the ones that don't get noticed at all
Here's to the gods of light in human form
Pretending to be stuck in duties and laws
Running after religion or away from it
Claiming discipline is the highest way
Making rules and staring ahead
Yet drinking the wine of utter surrender, forever intoxicated by their own internal bliss.

The brightest things in the universe, are often hidden in plain sight, but choosing to stay forever in front of our eyes. .

This one is for Lahari Mahasaya, and the countless, nameless, monks and nuns I've had the honor of meeting in the past year.

Here's to McLeodganj, the city that lead me to 'Autobiography of A Yogi' (by Paramhamsa Yogananda), among other magical things.

Facebook notification; 3 years ago today. This photo is taken on the road between #Pai and #MaeHongSon in the north of #Thailand. I wrote a letter in Thai with help of the hostel staff saying take me wherever you are going, standing on the road trying to hitchhike. A local man stopped the car and took me in. With extremely poor English we managed to have several hours of conversations and laughter with help of body language. Whenever we stoped to hydrate or have a bite on this amazing road in the mountains, He insisted to invite me even tho He was the one who took me in his car for free, and he wouldn’t allow me to pay a penny. Arriving late in the evening to beautiful Mae Hong Son, he took me into his family house where they served me a huge dinner cooked on the floor, saying explaining with the few words in English he knew; this is friendship. No favour. I ended up staying for a week in the temple on top of the mountain in Mae Hong Son, with the monks who practiced their philosophies and religion, paying the housing and food with favours like teaching the young monks English, cleaning before their morning sessions and cooking.
What I want to explain is that without any plans, while taking some risks; I had the most real time of my life. Never could I imagine that people that (in our eyes) had so little in their pockets, would be the most generous on earth. This trip is one of the parts that changed my way of travel, but mainly, that changed my mind of life.

Just before the sun peeked over the top of the temple, everyone was still awaiting the famous red ball over the temple photo we took our chances to see Angkor Wat almost empty. Wow was it worth it! I have to say it wasn’t my favourite temple, I preferred Ta Prohm (tomb raider & Indiana Jones temple) , Banteay Kdei & Ta Som - maybe because they were more in ruins and a lot less people at them.
Really wish we could do more exploring of them, but with a day ticket costing $37 it’s not in budget & why we done 10 in one day lol.
🔻
Fun Facts
🔺 Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world but didn’t make the new ‘7 Wonders of the World’ list
🔺 The Angkor ruins stretch over more than 248 square miles (400 square kilometers)
🔺 Angkor Wat was built without any help from machinery. The site was constructed between 802 and 1220 AD using 1000 elephants and 300,000 labours.
🔺 Originally built for the Hindu religion, Angkor Wat became Buddhist in the late 13th century. The temple is still used for worship today - you’ll still see Monks walking around!
🔺 Paramount Pictures paid $10,000 a day to film in the temple Ta Prohm for the 2001 film Tomb Raider
🔺 Angkor Wat was during the 12th century the largest city on Earth with an estimated population of nearly 1,000,000.
