Angelika J. Trojnarski – The Rising @aj_trojnarski on view @galerietanjawagner until January 20 2018⠀

Trojnarski’s fascination for science and technology also determines the motifs in her recent works. Her paintings, collages and objects speak of human curiosity and explore the history of human knowledge and research in early shipping, aviation and astronautics.⠀

On this basis, Trojnarski juggles three thematic fields, all of which deal with the exploration of new spheres: ship journeys into the unknown, and flying within as well as outside the Earth’s atmosphere. The first theme concerns the historic maritime expeditions of James Cook, Edmond Halley, Fernando Magellan, and the Vikings who entered America before Columbus. The second motif is made up of images from the aviation sector such as bird wings and feathers, dash lines from the wind tunnel and zeppelins. The third part deals with modern space travel – Yuri Gagarin, the Monument to the Conquerors of Space in Moscow, rocket launches of probes and photo material from NASA can be found in the collages.⠀

In her work, Trojnarski links the objects, which in some cases date from different centuries, by pointing out the parallels and overlaps in the history of technology, for example the segment construction of boats and zeppelins or navigation systems in aviation and shipping technology. At the same time, she makes this history tangible on a different level than the immobile object in the museum – in her paintings, the dynamics can be experienced sensually, the movement, the curiosity, the urge to discover something new.⠀

The artist focuses on the means of transportation without which the exploration of new spaces would not have been possible. Travel, whether by ship, zeppelin or rocket, forms the basis for the discoveries of restless researchers. [...]⠀

(2/2)
Arbeit macht frei. Work sets you free.
Let that sink in.

The first time I visited the Auschwitz concentration camp, I didn’t notice the upside-down “B”.
I speak German but I didn’t notice this particular detail at first glance. And despite that, the phrase made my heart sink.
.
My friend drew my attention to the upside-down B.
I felt a lump in my throat.
It was so subtle & yet so powerful.
The sign was built by the prisoners at the camp.
They made their mark even in the state of their powerlessness.

My Austrian friend, who happens to be of Polish descent, is the grandson of a Holocaust survivor. His grandfather, a surgeon by profession, was among the prisoners who built the sign.
My friend is Christian... just like his late grandfather.
BUT...
Yes, it took my mind a while to register that, too.
.
Among the most heartbreaking things about visiting the Auschwitz memorial was knowing that one of the many groups that were targeted by the Nazis were the ethnic Poles.
Are you following?
The natives of Poland were persecuted IN Poland for being Polish!
At least 2 million were killed.
.
What a lot of people don’t know is that the Third Reich didn’t just target the Jews.
According to countlessess Holocaust survivors & historians, the number of the Soviet Slavs (~6 million) massacred by the Nazis is equal to (if not higher than) that of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
And it gets worse: the Third Reich didn’t even spare the disabled.

Like I said, the distance between Oświęcim & Kraków isn’t much. But travelling from Kraków to Oświęcim, knowing where you’re going, is like a journey towards an emotional iceberg. You think of the word “Holocaust” several times on your way. You try to imagine the town, & more specifically, the concentration camp. And before you know it, the iceberg hits you.
You’re in Oświęcim.

Today I felt incredibly proud to be a journalism studies graduate after witnessing the brave, heroic work carried out by war correspondents and photojournalists during the Vietnam War.
Putting their own lives at risk, they shed a much needed light on the truth behind the aggressive war so that the rest of the world could see it for themselves, albeit harrowing and sickening. Not only this, but newspapers were a key tool for American soldiers to express their views of anti war and corruption, encouraging others to break away.
The most shocking and sobering photographs for me were the aftermath accounts of Agent Orange, which was sprayed over the agricultural land. It caused illness and disability for three million people who were exposed, and even caused second and third generation affects, that are too graphic to detail. Can you tell I broke down into tears in the middle of the museum? #photojournalism #hcmc #vietnam #journalism #travel #history

I got to explore Seattle while my other 2 travel companions explored the ski slopes. Starting with the Goodwill Outlet (boy, was that an adventure!), then the Seattle Art Museum, where I got to see the amazing “Figuring History” exhibit, featuring the work of Robert Colescott, Kerry James Marshall, and my new favorite artist, Mickalene Thomas. Also on display was a beautiful piece by Obama’s portrait artist, Kehinde Wiley. Then I headed to Pike Place for a bit before meeting the worn out skiers at our hotel. I logged almost 7 miles and had a blast.

P.S. I have two pictures of Pike Place by accident. I have no idea how to delete one of a group of photos once I’ve gotten them set up.

An early morning view of the Hagia Shophia in Istanbul, Turkey.

Obsessed with taking pictures of monuments in the golden hour, I got a chance to see Hagia Sophia in the morning light as sun rose from across the Bosphorus.

If seen closely, one can very clearly make out how this building’s character evolved over the centuries.
As most of us know the history of this building that it transitioned from a Greek Church to a Mosque and later to a museum, this picture makes it all very evident from the external structure and outlook.
The paint, the tile work, the distinct features like minarets and their placing, all tell a story of what this structure is witness to in its lifetime.

Narayanhity Palace, once the seat of power of the Kingdom of Nepal, has now taken on a new role of museum. The building – its insides and the compound are in itself a lesson of history — from showcasing its regal past to the brutal memories of the massacre of 2001 that almost ended a dynasty. Today, the place reeks in nostalgia as the so called “commoners” walk in the corridors that once saw rulers and leaders. ...

What an amazing way to end our trip to Ohio than to stop by the @bucklandmuseum ! “Raymond Buckland started The Buckland Museum of Witchcraft and Magick in 1966. After visiting the late Gerald Gardner and his collection on the Isle of Man, Raymond was inspired to start a collection of his own. While working for British Airways, he was able to acquire many of the artifacts in this collection from all around the world. He initially displayed his museum on a few shelves in the basement of his Long Island, N.Y. home. However, over time, Raymond’s witchcraft collection rapidly grew to well over 500 artifacts, ranging from Ancient Egyptian ushabti’s to documented artifacts from the Salem Witch trials. This was the first museum of its kind in the United States with an anthropological approach to the world of folklore and the supernatural.”-Bucklandmuseum.org 🔮Thank you so much to Steven and Jillian the owners of @bucklandmuseum for preserving and sharing these amazing pieces of magical history + your great stories with us today. The smile of a Dominican-Black kid given something taken for granted by too many—-OPPORTUNITY. Days like this we hoped and prayed for. Last year, they said “No” to basic field days on their crusty, mishapen, grass forsaken field and instead tried to keep my baby inside with a purposeless, busy-work packet. They said “no” to in county field trips—- in 2017, not 1927!! I shared his journey here on IG of the cruel year filled with continuous, clear and what was, in 2017, a complete depiction of exclusion and refusal to expose little black boys to opportunities all the other kids got. I even had someone ignorantly comment how their non-black child had the best experience with these same teachers😏 But I knew my child and the crazy world we currently live in—-he’s gifted, athletic, smart and mannerable as hell!!! In retrospect, i think he had to go through that, to get to this...Now look at ya....new leaders, new school, great teachers, positive and an equal learning environment that’s willing to put you on a plane, take you and expose you to historical monuments like the White House, the Smithsonian, the Holocaust Museum, FDR, the MLK, Vietnam and the Jefferson Memorials. Let me take you beyond Dade County and travel back to visit the history, troubles and path taken by your ancestors exhibited at the Museum of African American History and Culture—-you had to go through that to get to this. For your 11th Bday, literally and figuratively, take off baby✈️ The sky’s the limit—-Happy Birthday Young King, your testimony is greater than you🙏🏼❤️ #DJturns11

Nothing better to do than have a cosy lie-in on a cool, rainy, achy day. When I did go outside, I was craving a low-key day. The last month has been a barrage of beauty, newness and adventure. And suddenly your mind and body need to play catch up. I walked towards the river and chose to sit out on a quiet patio, with my wine and tapas. In Granada they will give you free tapas with your drink in the afternoon. It’s a total surprise. Usually it’s delicious and I cut it open wondering what it is. One time it was liver pate
and the sweetheart of a server saw my face and brought me a yummy citrus salmon tapa instead. Bet you didn’t know that they make the most decadent hot chocolates here? I chased my red wine with a minty dark chocolate number. I swear when I took a sip, the sky parted and the sun came out.
2/2: I kept seeing signs for it but stumbled across the Palacio de los Olvidados. It’s a combo of exhibits on Sephardic Jewish culture, the Spanish Inquisition and Torture Museum all in one. It will clearly not win any museology awards but was interesting nonetheless. Spain has such a fascinating history with conflict, conquest, and devastation and it was a small window into this terrible and complex patch of time. The views from the top floor of the museum were pretty spectacular too. I ended up picking up souvenirs I’d gawk at in stores for the last week, hemming and hawing over whether or not to get them, including an illustrated book on Spanish and Islamic tile work. If you don’t know by now, I’m kind of obsessed with their pattern, colour and geometric motifs. I have a long day tomorrow which you’ll have to come back to find out about. Buenas noches! .

Russia and Europe.” Although being just a part of the fantastic exhibition on the October’17 revolution and its background, this picture is more to attract your attention.

Hugely thought provoking, with some of the items just turning your opinion upside down, and then the next one again; this exhibition was a big surprise to me and dragged my attention from the history of Deutschland, the original aim of the trip. While most of the pivotal exhibits are from Russian State Historical Museum (so I didn’t really have to travel that far to see it) the pieces from other countries, especially Britain, surprisingly, has made me feel I’ve drawn the complete picture.

Huge thanks to the staff of Deutsches Historisches Museum and the Swiss National Museum for amazing work! I blame you for a rather quick look on the German history )

Strongly recommend! Visit before 15.04.18 if you can.

P. S. Pity that some items are only a copy - surprising how documents easily lost even on these recent events.

We are spending over two weeks in England, which will include an all-day peaceful parenting / Radical Unschooling Workshop, time with friends and much-needed time with my Mom. I’ve traveled with Orion since he was born, but never just the two of us. One-on-one time with my children is becoming more possible since they are all getting older. Im so grateful for this.
This special trip with my youngest is going to be amazing. I am taking Orion places to nurture his passions and interests such as, the London Natural History Museum, for his love of dinosaurs. The Tower of London, to facilitate his learning about the history of England and interest in armor and weapons and Th e London Eye, because he loves Ferris wheels and well... this has to be one of the greatest in the world.

I’m profoundly grateful for the opportunities that my children have had to travel the world and experience so many amazing things because of my career and those who support my work. I hope that Orion and I connect with many families who want to learn more about unschooling and peaceful parenting while we are in England. Thank you to all who have supported and encouraged us on this unique and powerful path of freedom-based advocacy. We love you!

For me it was an eye opening to visit The Whitney Museum of American Art, and walk between a collection of selected artworks that goes back to the 20th- and 21st-century.

Here are some of my favourite:

Exhibition - 1:
“An Incomplete History of Protest, looks at how artists from the 1940s to the present have confronted the political and social issues of their day. Whether making art as a form of activism, criticism, instruction, or inspiration, the featured artists see their work as essential to challenging established thought and creating a more equitable culture.” Photo-1: Installation view of An Incomplete History of Protest.

Exhibition - 2: “Where We Are: Focusing on works made from 1900 to 1960, Where We Are traces how artists have approached the relationships, institutions, and activities that shape our lives. the exhibition is organized around five themes: family and community, work, home, the spiritual, and the nation.” Photo-4: John Steuart Curry (1897–1946), The Stockman, 1929.

From the #ChisenhaleArchive: 'Broken Hill' (2013), a new commission by Bangkok artist #PratchayaPhinthong for his first solo exhibition in the UK. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The exhibition at #ChisenhaleGallery explored the status of the replica ‘Broken Hill’ skull in the collection of the Lusaka National Museum, Zambia, and the displacement of the original to the Natural History Museum in London, examining how historical narratives are performed through objects. The ‘Broken Hill’ skull is the first early human fossil found in Africa and provided the primary evidence to support Darwin’s theory of evolution.
For his exhibition, Phinthong loaned the replica skull, replacing it with an identical model purchased online. He additionally invited the museum guide, #KamfwaChishala, to travel to London for the duration of the exhibition in order to relay the complex history of the skull to gallery visitors, as he does in Lusaka.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
See Phinthong's work in the group show, 'Absurdity in Paradise', @kasseler_kunstverein, Kassel, which opens today.⠀⠀⠀

View of the Central Stairwell, late afternoon light and shadow, Neues Museum, Berlin, April 2018.
.
I have so much love for this museum and the brilliant work David Chipperfield, Julian Harrap, and their team, did in rebuilding and restoring it. The lavish 19th century building was bombed in WW2 and left in disrepair during the GDR years. The contemporary structure reflects this complex history by preserving parts of the original construction and decorative scheme where possible, while adding new elements such as the concrete and marble stairwell - managing to both respect the past and create something new and innovative - this is architecture at its best.

The answer is easy and complicated at a time: It is a matter of passion, curiosity and permanent rehearsal.🤭.
.
Our tours are not like a cake which is done at one moment or another; they are more like an ambitious big building, work in progress to become the ideal replica of Paris’s unbelievable beauty. ❤️.
.
So what we do, all we guides together, is to inspire us mutually, to bring up new ideas, to verify them, find better ways to make come through information - and all that with one only aim: to make the experience of our guests more unique, more thrilling, more unforgettable...

Hokusai was inspired to create the Thirty-Six Views as a response to a dramatic increase in domestic travel in Japan around 1830, as well as by a personal interest in Mount Fuji.

Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Klimt, Manet and van Gogh, among others, were all greatly influenced by Hokusai's work, and without this influence movements like Impressionism, Art Nouveau and Modernism may not have happened.
