Meet Cesia (89) and Abram (94), Grandparents of Nastassja, the bride at a wedding I photographed a couple of years ago. I fell in love with them instantly, and no doubt you will too, for they're the cutest, kindest, most adorable people you could ever meet.⠀

I want to share their story with you, over a series of images. It's a story that will break your heart, but it's one that has to be told...⠀

Part 1. ⠀

“All we had when we came to Australia was each other.”⠀

Neither had a home. Both had lost their parents. Cesia had lost her mother and father in August 1944. She was 14. Abe’s mother died the same month. His father had perished in 1942. Both knew their parents had been taken from them to die among a shivering herd of concentration camp inmates forced to stand naked in a shower block until the taps were turned on and the gas came out.⠀

Abe had grown up in Lodz, Poland, three blocks from Cesia. She was four years his junior, a shy, quiet girl. He was an athlete, small but strong, with a fierce sense of social justice that, in anti-Semitic prewar Poland, often landed him with a black eye. The two never met as children, not even when their families were forced to leave their homes for the Lodz ghetto, where they lived streets apart, sporting the same Jewish Star of David; both hungry, both scared.⠀

They saw death for the first time in the ghetto. He saw children thrown from second-floor hospital windows. She saw guards shoot grandmothers. Having only known love, hatred came as a shock to them.⠀

As a young girl Mother Teresa was fascinated by stories she heard of missionaries serving in #India. By age 12 she discerned a vocation to the religious life, and at the age of 18 joined the Sisters of Loreto as a missionary to India. She arrived in India in 1929 and taught at a schoolhouse in Darjeeling for wealthy children. She chose her religious name after St. Therese of Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries. She served at the school for 20 years and became head mistress. She enjoyed her work, but became increasingly disturbed by the extreme poverty and societal unrest she observed around her. She answered the "call within a call" and began her own religious order in #Calcutta dedicated to ministering to, in her words, "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." This order was established in 1950 with 12 sisters and named the #MissionariesofCharity. By the time of her death on September 5, 1997, the Missionaries of Charity had grown to 4,000 sisters operating 610 missions in 123 countries. She received the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize and the Nobel Peace Prize for her inspiring work with social outcasts. Mother Teresa was canonized by #PopeFrancis on September 4, 2016. Her feast day is September 5th. #MorningOffering #MotherTeresa #SaintOfTheDay #Prayer #Love #Peace #Repost @morningoffering ・・・ - #regrann

If you have one - you may have experienced some of the many emotions I’m about to describe. Curiosity as a young girl - asking yourself where your pee comes from and why this hole even exists. I remember up until I was 9 years old, I thought I peed from my clitoris.
_
Middle school followed and that meant swim class and shared locker rooms. The shapes, sizes, and colors of the vulvas that surrounded me all seemed so different than my own. Confronting the parts of me that held the most insecurity brought feelings of shame and embarrassment at my most vulnerable times.
_
Shame stayed (sometimes still) into my thirties. I look in the mirror at my naked body and wonder why it’s not different or what it’d be like to change it. To lay down on my bed with a partner and feel ok with my legs open and the lights on. I’m not even sure if I ever truly relaxed enough throughout my relationships to enjoy oral sex without me apologizing for myself.
_
I’m comparative by nature - I think it stems from always falling short of expectations set by my mother and myself - irregardless I looked at my vulva and hated myself. It surfaces still, sometimes. But the difference now, is I know the origin of this conditioned response and I’m quick to remind myself that everything about me is perfect - exactly the way that it is.
_
My vulva is mine, it’s unique and it’s allowed my four children to pass through and into my arms. It’s withstood assault and it bleeds every month. I’ve put tampons, menstrual cups, and ahem... 🤭inside of it and it always bears the brunt of my bad days as I curse it and wish for something different between my legs.
_
@the.vulva.gallery highlights the incredible diversity in the land of vulvas and I wanted to share a few of her beautiful paintings.
