I’m reading Patti Smith’s ‘Just Kids’ and it’s had a profoundly moving effect on me. I can’t stop researching the Chelsea Hotel, where so many infamous artists wandered through; the home of Kerouac’s ‘On The Road’; the place where ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ was created; where Edie Sedgwick had a fire, Hendrix and Dalí strolled about; Nancy died and Warhol filmed a movie. I’m obsessed with this place because it mirrors my feelings during the Icelandic residency, of being surrounded by artists trembling on the edge of notoriety, of being part of a community and a commune where being an artist truly feels exhilarating.

To when you roll the dice and you swear your love's for me”
-Finley Quaye “Wait, they don't love you like I love you”
-The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Soft hair and a velvet tongue

And I know that everything's gonna be fine”

And I know that if you love me, too,
What a wonderful world this would be”
-Sam Cooke “I'll never try to change you
As if I could, and if I were to, what's the part that I'd miss most?
When you're smiling and astride me
I can hardly believe I've found you and I'm terrified by that”

That your kiss might kill me.
So won't you kill me,
So I die happy.”
-Dashboard Confessional “I woke up at the moment when the miracle occurred
Heard a song that made some sense out of the world
Everything I ever lost, now has been returned
The most beautiful sound I'd ever heard”

A perfect day.
I didn’t leave my house for 35 hours because it’s been winter for almost 7 months now and to be honest I feel a bit haggard. @kristoffer_mpls somehow managed to snag anonymous choir tickets at Lakewood cemetery before they sold out in a snap so I put on a dress (gasp) and some heels (double gasp) to go out and brave the world. We had mimosas and french fries and cake (and salad, we try to stay balanced) at the little French bistro down the street and watched these ethereal humans in this magical space in the middle of the cemetery (ask me about the cemetery sometime. Tiny Tim is interred there and there’s a section for ex circus performers). I, like everyone else, am barely holding it together at this point in the endless winter but moments like these, surrounded by beautiful, immaculately executed mosaics and the voices of angels singing Leonard Cohen and Patti Smith and Solange and stax covers...it’s a good reminder of what makes humaning such a glorious experience. The music finished. We congregated together for a bit, as people do in sacred spaces. As we left, snow had begun to fall. And even though I’m ready for the spring. It’s lovely. #anonymouschoir #lakewoodcemetery

(For the background story on the shield pendants please read the two previous posts)
.
A shield today feels better than an armor to me.
The armor is all around you. Stuck, in a way.
The shield is mobile. You can choose when to raise it and when to lower it.
.
I want to grow strong and fierce.
I want to keep speaking up.
I want to be my own saviour. No knight in shining armor for me...I am done waiting for him.
.
I want to be "too much". I want to be all of me.
Everything I was subtly taught it's not proper to be.
(Is it considered subtle if it shaped me in all the wrong ways and had me grow up in fear, though?)
.
I kinda want to raise the hair on their necks when they see me coming.
And laugh.
.
I want to surrender to life and let it shape me, transform me into my best version, in a stronger and more powerful one.
I am tired of being terrorized.
I want to keep my heart tender and open.
I don't want to grow bitter.
That's why a shield looks like a good amulet to me, to protect the tender parts but not cut everything out.
.
This shield carries a bind rune of protection, and a Snake teacher.
Three golden dots just because it felt right.
.
Copper, sterling silver and brass on leather string with silk details, long and adjustable.
It's for you, beautiful warrior.
Price is 110$ free shipping, send a message to claim it.
One of a kind.

"When New York City had a strong working class, people built and sustained community connection. Competition was always part of the city's ethos, but it wasn't the winner-take-all, destroy-your-neighbor, Ayn Randian brand of today. Many of the people attracted to the luxury city subscribe to the Enron Society's values. Riddled with status anxiety, they've come not to be citizens, but consumers, making as much money as possible while they stomp out the "losers." I try to tell myself it's not their fault. They've been brainwashed in the digital glow of Kardashian-Trump pseudoreality, baptized by brands that tell them to "Be Stupid" and "Just Do It" "Because You're Worth It." Unfortunately, we all suffer for it.
Entitlement, cutthroat competition, disregard - this meanness contaminates everyday social interactions. It's the shopper who pays for her goods while talking on her cell phone, never acknowledging the cashier. It's the Citi Bike rider who dings his bell at a slow-moving old lady as he blows through a red light. It's all the people who knock into you on the sidewalk while they type a text. Haughty hostility has become the city's atmosphere.
To escape, I go into faded coffee shops, dive bars, and bookstores, the refuges of New Yorkers who have not been brainwashed by the ethos of the New Gilded Age. In these places, you can feel the old city, the brash, opinionated, neurotic, human city that once was. In these places, I can breathe, rejuvenated by the presence of strangers who are actually present. But every time I get attached, the blessed place is ripped out by rising rents. Its people scatter. Where can we go? Patti Smith told us to "find a new city," but what city is safe? The Enron Society is everywhere. So we stay, those of us who won't let go, who hold out hope that New York always cycles and its egalitarian spirit will prevail. The Gilded Age of the 1800s gave way to the Progressive era. Maybe it will happen again. Even as we complain, we remain eternal optimists. We wait, ears pressed to the asphalt, listening for a sign that the hot-blooded heart of New York will beat again."
-Jeremiah Moss, Vanishing New York: How a Great City Lost Its Soul.

What a beautiful read 💖 As I was reading it, the book reminded me of my uni years and final year, working on final project. My friend Sarune @00instant00noodles00 loved Patti Smith. We worked in her flat on finishing touches of our projects, running on 4h sleep, tons of 🚬, coffee and sometimes 🍻 as we were drawing and sleeping in turns in between we were blasting Patti Smith Because The Night (belongs to looovers, because the night belongs to lust 🎶 because the niiiiight belongs to lovers because the night belongs to us). And as I was finishing the book, thinking about drawing, process, reflection, connection with people, friends, life, what’s important, where inspiration comes from, how things are so unpredictable and intertwined, this song just became so right and perfect for my life in this moment :) 🎵 📚 ✏️ Just Kids.

Meltin' in a pot of thieves
Wild card up my sleeve
Thick heart of stone
My sins my own
They belong to me, me

(Read previous post, please, for a general introduction)
A shield. Because you are your own hero.
.
Because you are the one to stand up for yourself and defend your heart and what you believe in.
Because you can do it.
You can learn to be that person.
You can activate that side of yourself.
Even if it sounds impossible and you feel so weak and helpless and incapable.
I know how it is. I have been there and I still am so often.
But I am also experiencing this new side - this new dimension where I stand up and say no. Or I say yes to challenges.
And it wasn't smooth or easy. It isn't smooth or easy.
.
When I made this piece I planned to make one for sale and one for myself.
I asked my dear @sticksandstonessf for a rune that would express this sense of protection for someone who is going through such change and challenge and learning her own strength. And she found this perfect bind rune for me.
It speaks of inevitable needed change. Of death and its necessity in order to be reborn. Of acceptance of what is and acceptance of stillness. Of forward movement.
.
As I was working on these shields I realized I don't need them.
What I needed was the catharsis.
It was the alchemy that happens when I mix emotion and metal, and the way it allows the life lesson to sink into my bones.
That strength is now mine. I don't need reminders. It is now me.
.
So this is for you, whoever you are.
This was made in the pure mad electric energy of the aftermath of my break through, so I see them as extra charged amulets.
It's copper and sterling silver, with molten layers, carved rune in the back and a perfect quartz that plays with the molten silver background.
A Snake, great teacher of change.
Hangs from a long, adjustable knotted cotton string.
It is one of a kind.
.
Price is 130$ and shipping is free.
Send a message to claim it, you beautiful warrior 💙

On Easter 1978, Patti Smith and her group released their third album ‘Easter’’, with the monster hit ‘Because the Night’, created from the ashes of an unwanted, forgotten and abandoned Bruce Springsteen outtake. The song and the album, which deliberately showed her unshaven armpit hair and which her record company deliberately photoshopped out, cemented her punk rock career fame. Always liked that story and always liked her. Patti Smith is past 70 now and just announced a documentary film. Still creating, still writing, still giving no fcks. That rare unicorn of the female punk rock singer-songwriter whom also writes supremely well. ‘Just Kids’ was a volatile and lyrical book, a song within pages, and so is this sound advice. I admire her insatiable spunk. #buildagoodname

Those who already follow Melissa know that she not only makes badass work, but is also vocal about the issues that matter for our country, planet, and people everywhere. A full time studio potter and mom, Melissa lives and works in Asheville, NC. Her work feels like her — warm, inviting, bold, and grounded. – @tessmattern
.
Melissa writes, “I first found feminism in punk as a young teen. The lyrics, the ideals, the people (for the most part) rebelled against the norms of society, including the traditional female persona. It was the first time I felt free from that trap. This is not to say in any way that the subculture of punk was devoid of sexism. It certainly wasn’t. It was just easier to find an alternative to the norm because the path was brighter. It was like a big neon sign that said ‘It’s different here — easier to navigate and feel safe.’ It gave me the confidence to speak up and speak out.
. .
“Being a feminist in clay should be no different from being a feminist in all the other aspects of our lives. I continually adhere to the notion that our work is us and we are our work. If we are making authentic work that’s true to who and what we are, the two can’t be seperate. There are important conversations about white feminism happening in the mainstream now that I find essential. It is impossible to fight for one oppressed group of people while simultaneously silencing another. Feminism is nothing (worse than nothing, it’s hypocritical) if it is fighting for a specified group of women. Feminism is about equality, respect, and inclusivity. Sojourner Truth asked ‘Ain’t I A Woman?’ in her well-known and powerful 1851 speech. In it, she stated boldly and clearly that feminism and women’s rights extend to all women not just the privileged ones on center stage. I also love this Patti Smith quote, because it embodies feminism without trying to speak to that subject directly: ‘If we keep our little flame alive, our first feeling of enthusiasm of who we are, without the influence or intervention of others, we will prevail.’ – @melissaweisspottery #PIAguesthostmelissaweiss #potteryispolitical

The Smiths were an English rock band consisting of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. Their origins trace back to 1978, when Morrissey and Marr met through mutual acquaintances at a Patti Smith gig at the Apollo Theatre. In 1982 Marr told Morrissey that he wanted to establish a new band, and the two became instant friends, holding their first rehearsal in Marr's rented attic room. By the end of the summer they had chosen the name The Smiths because it was the most ordinary name at the time. Morrissey decided he would only be known by his surname, and Marr began referring to him as "Mozzer" or "Moz". The two picked up bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce, and The Smiths was born. The band signed onto Rough Trade Records and performed songs written by Morrissey and Marr, which usually detailed struggles with the outside world and relationships. Their fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk made them an instant 80s hit on the music scene, and many critics have called them the most important alternative rock band to emerge from the British independent music scene of the 1980s. They released the studio albums The Smiths, Meat is Murder, The Queen Is Dead, and Strangeways, Here We Come before their breakup in 1987. Morrissey has continued in his solo career, meanwhile, releasing his new album Low In High School last November. #thesmiths #morrissey #johnnymarr #meatismurder #howsoonisnow #thischarmingman #smiths #history

Friends, ... Because the night belongs to us...|| Before finding fame between the exposed brick walls of downtown punk mecca CBGB, singer-songwriter Patti Smith would find the rarer fortune of a lifelong companion in fellow artist Robert Mapplethorpe on her very first day in the city in 1967. Friends, lovers, soulmates and collaborators, the moments and years which passed between the star-crossed duo would prove formative to the artistic development of each, Smith going on to become something of the punk poet laureate and Mapplethorpe one of the most prolific fine art photographers and figures of the 20th century. Over the years, the fruits of their collaborative relationship would flourish from Mapplethorpe's lensing of the definitive cover of Smith's 'Horses' (1975) to his capturing of a more tranquil, arcadian essence with the covers of 'Waves' (1979) and 'Dream of Life' (1988) as the singer-songwriter looks on at motherhood and the prospect of new horizons which would perhaps rely less on the role and vision of Mapplethorpe which she would detail in her 2010 New York Times bestselling memoir, 'Just Kids', noting "I didn't write it to be cathartic. I wrote it because Robert asked me to...Our relationship was such that I knew what he would want and the quality of what he deserved. So what what was my agenda for writing that book. I wrote it to fulfill my vow to him, which was on his deathbed. In finishing, I did feel that I'd fulfilled by promise." And we couldn't agree more; A love story of two avant-garde outsiders grounded more so in glass houses than glass slippers, the unholy union of Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe serves as a non-fiction testament to the manifolded poetics of metaphysical love in the physical world.

"Il futuro Boss aveva dato a Iovine una cassetta con lo scheletro di una canzone. Springsteen sussurrava la melodia, non aveva ancora il testo. Tranne quello all'inizio del ritornello: "Because the night belongs to lover".
