Arm balance expert @alexandriacrowyoga will teach you how to push past your physical and mental limits to boost your strength, improve your stability, and build up towards some challenging arm balances. 💪

Day 27: Split Handstand Pose
(Hanuman Adho Mukha Vrksasana)

1) From Downward Facing Dog pose, walk feet forwards until shoulders align directly over wrists. Firm shoulder blades onto ribcage. Rotate upper arms outward to keep shoulder blades broad, and hug outer arms inward. Spread palms and fingers, and press knuckles firmly into floor.

2) Extend one leg as high as possible. Keep pressing down through hands and extending through arms. On exhale, hop off the grounded foot and engage deep abdominal muscles to help lifting hips over shoulders. Hop up and down like this several times, each time pushing off the floor a little higher.

3) Fundamental body alignment:
•Hands placed shoulder-­width apart, fingers spread wide, arms straight, actively pressing away from the ground.
•Head tucked as if standing upright, or slightly tilted back for a gaze point on the ground.
•Ribs drawn in, active core (hollow)
•Hips in posterior tilt, tailbone lengthen toward heels.
•Legs straight in splits, toes pointed or flexed to continue the strong energetic line of the legs.

4) Work towards finding balance by shifting body weight towards the fingers or the heel of the hand. The top leg will reach overhead and the other leg reaches in the opposite direction. Stay energized through the entire body and trust the process. Dare to take a leap of faith and see what happens! Stay calm and breathe deeply.

2) Press arms down into the earth. Option to keep legs on floor or bend knees as hips float up. Keep your feet activated and attention on overall lightness, stability, and balance while your heels still touch the ground.

3) Send energy from core through the spine and legs. Keep lengthening arms and squeezing core and leg muscles. Eventually, the heels and sitting bones float up and hips swing back behind the wrists. Alternatively, place hands on blocks to ease the lift into the posture.

Wow! Already halfway through this challenge! Tomorrow (Day 5), let’s open up the spine a little with Tiger Pose and Chinstand.

Here are some fun ways I combine them. I’ve also provided a more accessible video using props since Chinstand is a hard pose and it’s better to set it up correctly and work on endurance than to just wildly flail into this arm balance.
.
Making it more accessible may include using a strap for Tiger Pose and/or blocks under the shoulders for Chinstand. As you can see in the second video, you don’t even have to lift the second leg up! It’s plenty hard without floating that foot off and you’re still getting the benefit!
.
Things to keep in mind for both of these poses are a strong core and trying to lengthen the low back so we don’t crunch into it too much. And in Chinstand, only a tiny smidge bit of weight is in that chin and you should feel NO pressure in the neck.

Other fun mods include using a chair or wall to help step up into Chinstand, but always remember to keep the legs engaged and the idea of lifting up, not sagging down.
.
Trying to make it more challenging? Flip Grip same-side Tiger Pose is a big balance challenge and lowering to Chinstand from handy (or pushing up) is always a good time.
.
Get weird, but stay safe. These challenges are to help you tap into your creative side, not compare yourself to others or push your body too far just for a quick post!

Yes #pinchamayurasana is primarily associated with the inversions family of postures which makes perfect sense but....let’s focus on the foundation of the variations: arms! I learned to handstand before forearmstand so we have a more complicated history. I despised dolphin pose (top) because my shoulders were weak and tight. Fast forward a bazillion yoga classes later and there is love! I still respect it fiercely as a formidable pose so getting one leg up is a major milestone before both stack above your shoulders. I also added the fun half sayanasana variation with one hand to my face (love how it’s the look of boredom yet the struggle is real.). In homage to our rooster day and also because hollowbacks are on the pose continuum I chose a lotus version 🐓. A private student of mine asked me recently if I ever have days where I can’t balance and the answer is most assuredly yes so please give yourself some love if that happens.....it’s normal!!!! Today I am offering up different #sirsana variations since this is “the king of all poses”💫I have learned from Dharma that you must copy the teacher! It is fun to watch Dharma demonstrate the various poses then try to copy them because he has so many tricks! I have observed that when he explains headstand in all of the variations he points out you must have the weight on your head not the finger tips! If the weight is on your fingertips they bend. If you are balancing on the correct spot on your head you barley need to use your fingers. I have seen him show how you can balance on even your pinky finger if you are doing it correctly! I still am working on not bending my pointer fingers and relying on them to keep me up! Also when balancing on one arm, it’s important to bend the legs and have an equal amount bend in the front leg and the back leg, that you must lean to the side you are balancing on to stay up, keep practicing, have fierce determination and imagine yourself in the pose!!! Also, if you have a lotus to do it, and don’t waste time! If you fall out get back up try again! And once in the pose close your eyes, bring all the attention between the eyebrows and focus on 💫💫💫💫🙏🏻 Please join in the first day challenge: choose a yoga pose that you learned from Sri Dharma Mittra. FLYER: From Floating Mermaid, bend knees and energize legs. Once base firms hands on shins, reach for ankles and press hips forward into Camel pose. Hold shape and stay firm as base lifts and balances you on hands.

SPOTTER: Place one knee on ground, one hand on flyer's back and the other on front body. Check for alignment, be the voice of communication, and bring flyer and base back into balance when necessary.

Extend arms, bend knees and take feet from flyer's armpits to upper back for support. When stable, balancing flyer on hands, take feet away.

FLYER: From Floating Mermaid, bend knees and energize legs. Once base firms hands on shins, reach for ankles and press hips forward into Camel pose. Hold shape and stay firm as base lifts and balances you on hands.

SPOTTER: Place one knee on ground, one hand on flyer's back and the other on front body. Check for alignment, be the voice of communication, and bring flyer and base back into balance when necessary.

Day 1: Mountain Pose (Tadasana/Samasthiti)

1) Samasthiti (Equal Standing) is the practice of standing with equal, steady, and still attention. Stand with base of big toes touching, heels slightly apart. Lift and spread toes, broaden balls of feet, laying softly back down to ground. Rock back and forth and side to side. Gradually reduce this swaying to a standstill, with weight balanced evenly on both feet.

2) Firm thigh muscles by lifting knee caps up. Lift inner ankles to strengthen inner arches. Imagine a line of energy all the way up along inner thighs and from there through the core, neck, and out through the crown of head. Rotate upper thighs slightly inward. Lengthen tailbone toward the floor and lift pubis toward navel.

3) Firm shoulder blades onto back, widen and slide them down the back. Without flaring ribs, lift the top of sternum skyward and broaden collarbones. Relax arms beside torso. Keep throat soft, tongue wide and soften eyes. Finally, lift toes up and explore the balance in heels and sides of feet. Stay calm and breathe deeply.

One of my favourite exercises to work on legs, glutes and core are #PistolSquats.
It could be balance challenging pose and it also requires certain level of ankle flexibility, so sturdy yoga blocks, like the ones I use from @lotuscrafts_meditation, can come very handy! . .

Growing up in the 80’s everything for me was about martial arts and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And this posture is the perfect combination ... This is day 3 of our #AshtangaFavorites challenge. Now it’s time for our favorite hip opener and I went with Supta-Kūrmāsana from Primary Series.
Growing up in the 80’s everything for me was about martial arts and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And this posture is the perfect combination of those two concepts. It has the zen feeling of practicing kata, and the fun aspect of trying to morph into a turtle without breaking your back.
It’s just a cool pose all around and a definite staple of my #practice all year round.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Lotta selected Dvi-Pāda Śīrṣāsana from Intermediate Series which is basically a harder version of what I’m doing. (Go check what an amazing practitioner she is @lottasebzdayoga).

Use your breath to help you through this and every challenge in life and you'll get through it before you knew it even started. 🌜Know that you don't need to be scared of something like standing on your hands, if you're a beginner or have any injuries, just getting upside down will do the trick :) You can modify with a wall, a tree or even headstand or forearm stand if that's more comfortable. 🌱 Warm up - wrist stretching, plank, forearm plank, side plank and believe it or not, splits, lunges and shoulder opening in dauphin pose. 🦄 All of the planks will get you warmed up and ready to get upside down. Since this is all about balance and stacking the bones, remember, shoulders over wrists, hips over shoulders and then the feet if you decide to go straight legs you can stag them as well to help keep balance. 🤗 So here is where the splits, lunges and shoulder opening helps. Stretching the legs makes it easier for you to stack hips over shoulders, because you'll be able to lift one leg up higher and not use so much energy kicking up with the other leg. Once you get up it helps if your shoulders are nice and open so you can extend and keep your arms straight so you don't loose energy bending and straightening your elbows. Push the earth away from you, pull the belly in and up 💕
All that being said. Plant your hands. If your up against a tree or wall make sure you're not farther than a foot away, if you're smaller move a little closer. Make sure your fingers are spread wide so you have more surface area to grip. And really grip, use the tips of your fingers to help you balance, and use your toes as well! ✨ place shoulders over wrists, keep the eyes on the ground, try to find one spot to focus on. Lift one leg, tighten the core and exhale all the way, with a big inhale kick up with the other leg. Make sure you keep breathing, don't get frustrated and listen to your body. I love you, your body loves you, so give it some love by having fun!

This is the first time in a very long time that I’ve posted everyday on social media and it hasn’t been the easiest. On the other side of the pretty pictures there are failed attempts of getting into poses, sore muscles from repeated attempts, the challenging balance of work, motherhood, time for loved ones, personal time and at times frustration when I just don’t feel like posting #mood. We give people a lot of heat for showing us the attractive parts of their lives on here, but it goes without saying that we all go trough things, we all have to dig deep to find strength and support of our roots to stand steady. I picked this pose not only because it represents the culmination of Second Series, but also because the arm placement is very unique and once you’re able to press up and balance this #inversion, it feels really good.
Lotta chose some very challenging headstands also from 2nd Series. (Check out how easy she makes them look @lottasebzdayoga).

Today we’re sharing our favorite #armbalance and I selected Pincha Mayūrāsana from the #Ashtanga Second Series because let’s face it, Pincha is the father of all arm balances.
Also, Lotta picked Karāndāvāsana which is the pose that comes right after Pincha in Intermediate Series (go check her beautiful execution @lottasebzdayoga), so Pincha is perfect for showing what you need to be working on before you think of adding the lotus legs and try lowering to the arms.
In my case I’m trying to focus on longer holds with a straighter line and a more controlled descent, something I’m emphasizing in almost every #inversion so I can get my core stronger by working hard on the negative portion of the movement.
