The food was excellent, we started with, Mushroom and Asparagus Ravioli for my wife and I had Trinchado, which is a fillet steak sliced and fried in the most amazing creamy chilli sauce. For mains I had the Baby Chicken and my wife had Line Fish with Prawns both perfect. We couldn’t manage a desert but did have a brandy and port before hitting the dance floor!

The resident band were really good, during the meal they played cool Jazz, mixed with some nice easy listening. When later hours approached there was a much more party feel with a bit of Four Seasons, ABBA, all the classic dance floor fillers.

I especially liked the papaya one... Yes, folks, papaya in soup is a real thing. 😆 I tried the Korean Army Stew Soup, which was a little too sourish for my liking (I guess if you’re a fan of kimchi, you’d like this muchly. Don’t get me wrong, I like kimchi — I just don’t enjoy sour soups much).

Mum: “Okay. I’ve cooked glass noodles (冬粉), veggies with prawns, chap chye (stir-fry mix veggies 什菜), and roast pork belly. I just need to steam the fish. And the watercress soup is done. I boiled for 6 hours. If you want to buy, maybe can buy a roast half chicken.
Me: “What?! Wait... that’s about 6 dishes including soup?! Then no need to buy chicken lah! That’s a lot of food already!!! I just asked in case you haven’t cooked and can save you some effort.”
Mum: “Then don’t buy. Just come.”

Lesson learnt. Don’t text mum about tabaoing food (buying food back) 30-60mins before dinner.

The menu draws inspiration from the traditional “Haftsin” table and the foods, fruits and nuts displayed on it.
I start with the Farcha bites. Small pieces of spiced chicken fried in egg, with a Sumac Hummus dipping sauce. Tender and savoury. I wish I could have had them straight off the frier and a tad spicier. But that’s me.
The Patra ni Machchi appears as a filling in a puff pastry pie. It works magically. The girls have been kind enough to replace the Ghol fish, which I’m not too fond of, with prawns.
Seer ni marghi. Seer is garlic and the eat is chicken in a creamy gravy. BBK are especially good at creamy gravies.
Now this is a tough one to win over my palate, because I like my palao spicy. They’ve combined the mild, cashew and coconut sauced. Kid Ghosh, and layered it with fragrant rice to make a pulao. It’s served with a sweetened onion kachumbar and Kheema Kababs. And it works on many levels. The mild pulao compliments the sharply spicy Kheema kababs and the generous helping of dry fruit and fried onion garnish just makes it go.
End with an Apple cake with sultanas and tonnes of cinnamon.

So as with all buffet, there’s there’s always the question of what to pick out of the many well laid out meals staring at you. If you’re a foodie like me, you’ll usually want to try everything new and then some (although this hardly ever happens cos I don’t want to get wheeled out in a wheel barrow 😀). But here’s a tip; take very small quantities of each item so you don’t get filled up too quickly.

So I tried everything I could and here goes;

Starter:
I had a couple of mismatched items. A bit of potato salad, that was cold but nice. Some pasta salad, prawns and the very salty Salmon Quiche. (If you’re concerned about your blood pressure/sugar you should completely stay away from that)

The mains included a couple of proteins served with spaghettini. There was the crispy fried Croaker fish with some chili pepper sauce that actually should have been renamed “sweet sauce”. I know they said “crispy” but it’s not really an excuse for the extent of dry hardness the fish had 🙄.
The chicken skewer was bland and smoky. Also had pork marmalade but the duck in garlic sauce was the absolute star of the show. Tender and tasty, I wanted more 😋

A variety of cakes; fondant, brownies, baked cheese cake, coconut and pineapple cake. Oh, there was also the darling cake which was the exact opposite of its name, probably a healthier choice if you’re watching your sugar tho.
And then there was the strawberry and chocolate ice cream... these are not fit to speak in a gathering of ice cream. Really if you’re a fan of ice cream, just save yourself the disappointment and ignore this.

Basic Guide;
The lunch Buffet is open from 12 noon to 4pm and costs #10,000 per head.
This doesnt include extras like water, Chapman or wine, except on sundays when you have it all inclusive for an extra #2,000.

Water: 1,000 ( This would buy almost 2 dozens of table water from shoprite, just saying 🤷‍♀️)

Central Vietnam's must-try noodle dish, Mi Quang is part noodle and part salad, as the dense rice noodles (sometimes colored with tumeric) are not a lot as you can see in the bowl on the bottom with only a scant ladleful of concentrated chicken broth. However, once you add all the condiments and greens which includes banana blossoms, Vietnamese coriander(rau ram) and perilla(tia to), laksa leaves, and lettuce, it becomes a meal that's substantial, balanced and complex.
The broth uses turmeric to balance out the rich chicken taste and gives a nice golden hue to it. It's also flavored with black pepper, fish sauce, nutty peanut oil and cu nen, a strong garlic-like vegetable resembling little bulbs from spring onions.
Complete it with condiments such as freshly squeezed lime, green chili, chili jam and break in some sesame rice cracker for some interesting texture.

The salt and pepper starters were super flavourful and quite peppery; our favourite were the wings which were perfect! Definitely one to try if you like pepper and crunch. The soup wasn't very flavourful but different to any Tom Yum I've had. - Mains: > Pad Bai Gapao (Prawn Stir Fry - Spicy) > Pla Lad Prik (Crispy Fried Seabass with Chilli) > Gaeng Penang (Penang curry with chicken) > Pad See-Ew Jae (Stir Fried Rice Noodles with Veg) >Egg Fried Rice

The mains were all very flavourful. The level is spiciness was quite reasonable, even for those dishes marked with two chillies on the menu. If you can take the heat then ask them to notch up the spice a little or dig into a little chilli oil! The dishes were all quite light on the oil and although we felt full after eating, it wasn't overwhelming or heavy. Perks of light food! The dish that stood out for us was the Crispy Fried Seabass which was cooked to perfection. Perfectly crispy batter which was not oily and flakey fish. The sauce was medium spicy and complimented the fish very well.
All the main dishes were served on heated dishes which kept them piping hot. This was a lovely touch as us food bloggers often end up with cold food after the photography session, and anyone who knows me, knows I don't like cold food 🙈 Dilemmas!!! - Desserts > Thai Pandan Pancakes > Thai Mango with Sticky Rice > Fresh Fruit Platter
Desserts have their own compartment and when sharing, they always go down well. Thai mango and coconut sticky rice is one of my favourites and it was sheeeeeer perfection. The mango was ripe and sweet but not at all mushy, and the rice were just the right level of sweetness. The pandas pancakes were something I've never tried and I was surprised by the taste and texture combination!!! Continued 👇🏼

They're very affordable and take the guesswork out of temperature – the most important part of deep-frying. If you don't have a deep-fryer, make sure to use a thermometer to get to the correct temperature and keep it there. Don't overload the fryer or you'll have a soggy outcome. I love these two dishes together with a plate of kimchi and boiled rice. The sauce is also really tasty with fried fish or chicken.

Vietnamese #pho #soup 🍲👌 My baby bump had me sick for months now, my appetite and the variety of foods I’m able to eat are very limited. So here is one of our favourite soups, that guarantees to solve it all🙌 Loaded with nutrients, fresh herbs and beautiful vegetables.

Pho Recipe:
(4-6 servings)
For the broth:
•2 onions, cut in half
•Garlic, large chunks (I’ve used @drummondhousegarlic )
•1 (4-inch) fresh ginger, sliced
•1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick
•2 whole star anise
•3 whole cloves
•2 teaspoons coriander seeds
•6 cups vegetable stock
•2 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
•1 tablespoon fish sauce (optional)
•3 medium carrots, peeled and coarsely chopped
Vegetables:
•Mushrooms, sliced (I’ve used wood mushrooms from @breffnimushrooms )
•Bok Choy, chopped
For serving:
•Cooked Chicken, prawns, tofu or thinly slice steak.
•Cooked Brown rice noodles •3 medium scallions, finely sliced
•1 fresh red chilli or chilli flakes
•fresh limes
•1 cup bean sprouts
•1 cup fresh herbs, such as coriander, basil, Thai basil, mint, or a mix
•Hot sauce or Sriracha
Method:
1.- Made my stock from scratch. Add ginger, onion, garlic, chicken, cinnamon, star anise & coriander seeds to a dry deep saucepan, salt and pepper, I blackened vegetables and chicken for that iconic smoky and sweet flavour of Pho. Add stock or boiling water to sauce pan and cook until chicken is tender and falling apart.
2.-Remove Chicken from the pot. Put stock though a sieve to remove spices and skim fat off the stock. Have all your finely sliced vegetables, cooked noodles and toppings ready.
3.- Bring stock to a boil, add soy & fish sauce, noddles and vegetables, cook for only 5 minutes and serve immediately (do not over cook your vegetables or noddles).
• Serve with your gorgeous toppings on top! Scallions, fresh coriander & herbs, fresh chilli or sriracha sauce. I’ve used Korean chilli flakes & spice bag powder from @chanchansauce

Of course you can opt to use plain white rice for this recipe! But adding red cargo rice and brown rice might not be all bad! Since the rice is so flavourful, they will be enjoying it too much to notice the healthy difference!
I like to use fresh sweet pineapples for this. Canned pineapples are way too sweet IMO. But if you want to rid the hassle of peeling that spiky fruit, just buy ready cut fresh ones.

Pineapple Fried Multigrain Rice

3 cups cooked multigrain rice, cooled or overnight
2 large eggs, cooked into omelette and sliced
5 shallots, peeled & sliced, fried till golden brown
3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
8-10 large prawns
120g chicken breast, cubed & seasoned with soy sauce & sesame oil
1 fresh squid, cleaned & sliced
(I used fish cake instead because the family ain’t big on squid)
1/2 of small sweet pineapple, cubed
Note: I omitted cashew and shrimp paste, but feel free to add them

Seasoning
1 tbsp fish sauce
1 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp fresh pineapple juice
1/2 tsp chicken powder
1/2 tsp white pepper

Garnish
Chicken floss & green onion
Thinly sliced cucumber
Method
1) In a large wok, add some cooking oil over medium heat. Add in garlic and sauté till fragrant.
2) Add in chicken and cook till opaque and then add in cooked rice.
3) Add all the seasoning and pineapple juice. Toss till all the grains are well combined. Add in pineapple, fishcake and prawns, toss a couple minute and cover to cook through.
6) Dish up once prawns are cooked through. Garnish with chicken floss, crispy shallots and green onion. Service! ———————————————-

The kakis enjoyed the fish maw soup which is made from fresh fish maw and a very thick old mother hen soup which was rich and hearty. The drunken flambé prawns, hae zhor and white bee Hoon were also worth recommending. The flaming chicken was more of a novelty. Tastes alright, but it’s the fireworks that get the oohs and ahhs. Prices in between a Zi char and Chinese restaurant. Good place to chill with some local Chinese dishes. 81 Lorong Chencharu, Orto Park. Open for dinner.

On the recommendation of the server, we ordered Red snapper fish and multi layered puttu named Ezhusundhara Rathrikal.

The multi layered puttu had prawns, chicken and pork in it. The snapper was first deep fried and then a layer of onion masala was spread over it.

The blend of flavours, and the plethora of tastes, made the meal absolutely mesmerising. A joy to behold!

Watching a humongous portion of malay cai fan arranged beautifully on a platter meant for sharing sends my appetite to an overdrive. All the spices and flavours together with the bowl of curry gravy drenching over fragrant white rice never fails to give me a serious food coma. This nasi ambeng at Mamanda came with the full works of beef rendang, french beans with tempeh, crispy fried salted fish (seriously addictive), fried dessicated coconut, bergedil, sambal prawns, sambal fish, beef lungs and chicken served in a rich coconut milk curry broth. I love the heat in the spicy dishes and I especially enjoyed the curry chicken. Mamanda also serves up other rice platters but most of the rest require advance orders. All that was lacking was a glass of bundung!

I first went to Kuala Lumpur about 10 years ago and went straight to sky bar to see the city from 34 floors up, drank cocktails and shots. We then roamed round the city and accidentally fell into #jalanalor street food market. Having spent a lot of my teens in Bangkok, I’m pretty used to south east Asia and it’s food markets, but this one is really something special. Stalls and hawkers spill out into the streets each serving something equally as fresh, fast and delicious. Cooks fanning smoke, both into and away from satay or chicken wings grilling tightly over coals. Boards with wild and wonderful foods; frogs leg porridge and chicken fish and Cantonese pork offal soup with locals wolfing them down. I’ve now been here about 5 times and always come back, because it serves one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. Black pepper crab, which is exceptionally better than its more famous counter part, Singapore crab. This, a few icy beers, some stir fried prawns with noodles made entirely of fresh egg and cooked in garlic butter, curry leaves and chilli, a whole barbecue “chicken” fish with a hot and sour dipping paste, a plate of clams and all the sauces of all of these things dripping from your hands to your elbows and more napkins than you know what to do with, in the buzziest place, in town is up there as one of the best things you can eat and do in life. Because it’s more Salt flavors vs Flying Fish, Seafood or other base soup tastes in sophistication.. but it’s light soothing enough for early Autumn albeit still so Summery in feel. You can catch me cooking this in my IG stories and also sharing this recipe here. Just use any laksa paste you like, need not be the same as mine as those off the shelves are generally good.
You might have caught me making some Pandan lemongrass ginger water in my stories. It’s so yummy and refreshing 😍 Shall share the recipe in another post...no space now 😂.

Dry Fried Laksa Noodles (serves 3-4pax)

500g thick bee hoon, blanched
2 garlic cloves, peeled & minced
2 tbsp dried shrimp soaked & chopped
80-100g laksa paste
120g-150g bean sprouts, ends trimmed
1 fishcake sliced
5-6 small tau pok, sliced
8-10 large prawns, peeled & deveined
200ml coconut milk

Seasoning
2 tsp fish sauce
1/2 tsp chicken powder
1 tbsp sugar
2 hard boiled eggs
Laksa leaves finely chopped (optional)

Method
1) In a pan, add 1 tbsp cooking oil and minced garlic over medium Low fire. Stir fried awhile then add in minced dried shrimp and cook till aromatic.
2) Add in sliced fishcake & Tau pok and cook for awhile, add in laksa paste and mix well.
3) Add in coconut milk and bring to a simmer. Add seasoning follow by the prawns.
4) When the prawns are almost cooked through, add in the blanched noodles and toss well.
5) Finally add in the bean sprouts and off the fire. Cook a couple minutes and dish up. Serve while still hot, with chopped laksa leaves and Sambal chilli.

Generally speaking, the chicken broth is added as their preliminary soup base, with a blended of herb and spice paste as well as a small amount of coconut milk and laksa paste too. As a result, the aromatic soup is incredibly rich, creamy and thick, last, but not the least, a very interesting contrast of how they put different textures of egg noodles and vermicelli together.

There’s a reason why this Izakaya Seafood Ramen is designated a signature dish.

The depth of flavour of the broth in this large, vibrant-looking bowl was quite something. Infused with a rich fishy taste, with just enough heat from the chilli to make things interesting, the noodles had a good bite to them, the prawns were perfectly cooked, albeit inconveniently unshelled, and the few scallops decent.

But it was the combination of flavours and textures that made this chicken ramen such an enjoyable dish.

One of the highlights of the review, and a dish worth visiting Izakaya for!

Wasn’t sure what to cook in the morning so decided to make Siew Yok (roast pork belly) tonight. 不知道要煮什么菜,就煮烧肉吧!The meat is juicy and the skin turned out really crunchy! Sharing the recipe below since so many of you are asking for it!

Using air-fried method again this time, so much easier and faster then oven! Less mess to clean too!
Stir fried Long beans with prawns in XO sauce. XO酱长豆炒虾仁. A simple but great dish any day. Wanted to use up all that XO sauce I have in my fridge too! Love how it brings out the sweetness of the prawns 😋 新鲜虾仁很鲜甜!

Fish balls with Cai Xin in chicken soup. Boiled my own chicken stock, added fresh fishballs and 菜心。Simple soup but love how flavourful it is, especially after I added some fried shallots in it too! 鱼丸菜心鸡汤。

Serve with multigrain rice. #要记得回家吃饭🐝 ——————————————-
Air-fried roast pork belly

500-600g pork belly, clean and pat dry
Seasoning
1 tsp salt
1 tsp white pepper
2 tsp Chinese wine 绍兴酒
1/2 tsp quality five spice powder

Method
1) Score the skin of the pork belly. Make sure your knife is sharp, else it’ll be quite tedious and dangerous!
2) Place pork belly skin side down, rub all the seasoning on the meat.
3) Flip the meat over and again pat dry the skin. Let it air dry for a few hours...else do like what I did ...use hair dryer🤣 it must feel very dry to get that crispy skin!
4) Air fry for 24-26 mins at 200°C. Leave meat to cool completely before slicing! Enjoy 😉 ——————————————

Pleasantly surprised by these bad boys from Happy Tree House BBQ in @visitrichmondbc 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 The prawns are decently sized for $2.95 per pop and the inner chilli monster in me was very happy about the added chilli sauce 🤤✨ HAVING SAID THAT 🔥 If you can’t take heat, you may wanna tell them to hold off the chilli powder cause most skewers are seasoned with cumin and chilli 🌶 The “premium beef” skewers were so juicy and delicious but my mom wasn’t able to enjoy them cause they were too spicy for her ... (though low key that meant there were more for me 😌😏😉🤫👌🏼)

Just thinking about this Udang Karang Cili Galam (spicy slipper lobster with black balsamic vinegar and truffle oil) from the Peranakan Buffet menu at Oscar's Conrad Centennial Singapore (@conradsingapore), which ends this week on 31 August 2018. While my heart would always remain with the muchly underrated and uber-nourishing Fish Soup from the oft-neglected noodle station outside, this slipper lobster is the dish I went back to repeatedly from the Peranakan side of things. I stacked my plate with them spicy shelled babies higher than the Chinese guy with his twenty-nine har gaus whom I spied at breakfast during my recent stay at InterContinental Hua Hin. (Those must have been some whoop-ass prawns.) I must say, the slipper lobsters certainly did not need the truffle oil to be empowered, strong and confident crustaceans.

Other Peranakan dishes include their Buah Keluak Beef Burger, Stewed Ginger Garlic Pork Belly with Steamed Buns as well as Nonya Chicken Curry Pie Tie.

Of course, the best part of the meal has got to be how I only paid 50% of the original price for two pax, courtesy of the American Express Love Dining programme.
