Your UPPER TRAPS are WEAK and messing up your neck! We reviewed basic exercises for overactive UFTs, but in many circumstances this muscle can be weak or have poor motor control.

Many people assume that the overactivity of UFTs are due to compensation and the muscle being strong (true in many circumstances with poor posture). In my experience, UFTs can be weak or strong and present with very similar tension and trigger points in the neck and shoulder. Therefore don’t guess and make sure you have your muscles tested by a health care practitioner. Every person has unique causes to their dysfunction and should not be seen like a textbook 📚. UFTs weakness and poor motor control are common dysfunctional patterns. If your muscles are not responding well to stretches and decompensation exercises, try strengthening your UFTs!

These exercise will help build UFT strength/endurance and help your motor control.
🔹Overhead Shrugs - perform with dumbbells or a barbell (fairly light)
1️⃣Start with shoulder and elbows at 90/90 and press the weight up - stay at the top of your press
2️⃣Shrug you shoulders gently upwards like you are punching upwards to the sky (~1 inch of movement)
3️⃣After the upward shrug you will depress the scapula
4️⃣Repeat 10-15x of upward shrugging and scapular depression
🔹Rolling Shrugs - use a weight that will not cause you to shift your trunk or drop your shoulder
1️⃣Start by protracting your scapula and then shrugging upwards
2️⃣Slowly retract and depress your scapula until you are back at the starting position
3️⃣Repeat 5-10x

Shadow boxing is sparring with yourself. The term is not limited to only boxing, but also to sparring with yourself in general. It can be done using your shadow or your reflection. Another method is to use visualisation.

Using visualisation, you would visualise an opponent and go through the moves like you were in a real fight. In shadow boxing, however, there is no one to hit you back. You can get a good full-body cardio workout that mainly focuses on your arms but also works your legs and abs.

You do not need to be a fighter to benefit from shadow boxing training.

To get the most of your shadow boxing workout, try to include footwork and dodging. Boxers are constantly moving around. You should be too.

Since you are not going to be hitting anything, you need to stop yourself. You should also keep your guard up and block your fictional opponents' punches.

Since it is a full-body workout, most of your muscles are being worked. Your main focus is on your arms but you may be surprised at how many muscles are being used.

It works your abdominal muscles, shoulders, chest, back, calves, quadriceps etc. Punching power starts in the legs. Assuming you do a variety of punches, footwork, and dodging you are working your toes to your neck.
