The hard exterior of your horse’s hoof is made of keratin, which is the same substance that our fingernails are made out of. The horse cannot feel this part of the hoof, but the keratin is hard and provides an excellent barrier to protect the inner hoof structures. This is the reason that farriers can nail horseshoes to the hooves – a horse doesn’t feel the nails go into the keratin.
Even though the keratin of your horse’s hoof is hard, did you know that the hoof, itself, flexes as your horse moves? This flexion helps to absorb shock, especially at the faster gaits. When we put shoes on a horse, the shoes actually restrict the hoof’s natural flexion. This can lead to reduced blood flow and increases the amount of shock that travels up the horse’s legs. However, some horses which are ridden on rough terrain need shoes to help protect their hooves.
Did you know that the hoof actually does a lot more than serve as a surface for your horse to stand on? The hoof gives your horse traction, supports his weight, absorbs the shock of each step, and pumps blood up through your horse’s legs.

This is such a journey 💜🦄 Lots of people asked how I started with ‘liberty’ work. It wasn’t so much with an exercise or technique but with a change of intention. The hardest thing was letting go of what I wanted. Asking myself constantly ‘Is this for me or is this for him?’. Cantering hurts him, I am sure of it. He canters in the field so people often say he must not want to canter while ridden because he’s lazy. For a while, I believed that because it was what I wanted to hear - I wanted to be given permission in a way, to push him more so that I could get what I wanted. I love cantering! For a long time I did that. I told myself ‘It’s good for weight loss and muscle building’. He did it, of course, because I asked. I am ashamed that he had to say NO for me to listen. After all we’ve been through and all the times I’ve learnt to listen to my intuition, I still listened to other people because it was the answer I wanted to hear. When he was lame last year, it was the wake up call I needed. I started giving him the option to trot and canter and he would say ‘no’. I’ve accepted it. He isn’t lazy - he’s very forward going and often his trot can keep up with another horse’s canter but cantering hurts him, so we don’t do that anymore. For me, that is liberty work. Listening and responding and accepting ‘no’. That’s why I stopped natural horsemanship - because the horse is not allowed to say ‘no’. No room for the horse to have a bad day, a sore back or sore joints. There is always a reason for a ‘no’ and I really try and find out why - not just with Tao, but with my clients horses too. Truly listening is what builds a bond. It cannot be forced but it can be faked on social media (!) - something to bear in mind 🦄💜 PC: @laurencresser

Sometimes I still can't believe I get to call this beautiful girl mine. She has so much heart and try, and surprises me with her patience and intelligence every day. She's the best confidence booster when you let her do her job, and she loves to humble you when you get ahead of yourself, for myself and my students. She is a challenge, yet one of the most sensitive and easy horses I've ever ridden. She's always ready to forgive and be a team... all you have to do is ask. And if you forget to ask first, be ready to be up there awhile until you remember to ask because she'll go toe to toe with you anytime (whether you're 5 years old or 55 years old.) She's all of the best qualities you could ever ask to have in a mare, and whenever I get frustrated (which is rare with her), I'm reminded it's only because of how alike we are, and we both want to do good at the job ahead. It makes our bond that much more special❤ #quarterhorse #aqha #scarletreys #horse #equine #love #bond #cowhorse #tailspin #tailspinbracelets #peppysanbadger #reyjay #docbar #peppysolanson #reininghorse #reningcowhorse

I'm pretty sure I have some long paragraph caption rant somewhere on this account about how I'll never outgrow horses & stuff, but you know, you change. Your passions change, things that used to make you the happiest girl on earth are now just tasks, not unpleasant but not anything like before. It's in the little stuff really. You start smiling more about all of the memories you have than what's right in front of you. You'll start envying the little girl who can't sleep on a Friday night cause she's too excited about Saturday morning lessons. Or the middle schooler begging to stay a little extra longer just to hang with the horses or sweep up. Don't get me wrong, my heart still melts when I leave the pasture and my horse follows me all the way to the gate. Or when she's cantering around me in the roundpen, and don't even get me started on how much I love riding. But I haven't ridden now in months and the little girl who used to stand up on a crazy ponys back is now the teenager who's finally been listening to her father about all of the dangers this sport comes with. I wish I rode more, I wish I could still jump and compete and wake up to teach little kid lessons, I really wish I could but sometimes doors get shut and you have to get out of the hallway and go open the one that's unlocked- even if you do so while dragging your feet.

Aaand down from a weird elevator jump 🙈😜👆🏻

I didn’t have enough space to tell you what happend after the vet had visited Irish yesterday, so this update is also going to be long 🙊

Yesterday after the vet had visited Irish and she had woken up from being drugged, we spend some time together in the pasture 🙌🏻 Irish and I were so much in sync and it felt just as if we were in a Disney movie 🌱
The rain was pouring down, but the connection between Irish and I was unaffected if not better... it’s impossible to explain how we felt💜

Today we rode a trip(the vet told us to do so) in the morning and again around 2PM ☀️ First with my mom and Perle and then with another horse and rider from the stable👍🏻 We all had a nice time, but Irish was a little slow compared to normally 😋 She’s still on painkillers, but still not eating 100% of her normal intake...
But she has a fresh and happy mind, so there’s still hope!💪🏻

After our second trip I was asked if I wanted to ride a big tricky dressage horse 🙈 I’ve known him for a long time, ridden him before(before he got tricky) and I’m so in love with him!!! And the fact that he’s even harder to ride now didn’t make me fall less in love with him - I may maybe have a little weakness for horses I can help 😜
Of course I said yes, and it was so much fun!😍 His problem is that he freaks out as soon as you want to trot, but after some crazy bucks and some nice words he quickly became a dream to sit on🙏🏻 He responded so great when I asked for trot, so I decided to try out some extended and slowed down trot... He LOVED the extended trot and when we ended our session, he searched for the trot and wanted to do more of it❤️
I’m sure it’s going to be fun helping him in the future👌🏻

Btw it’s my birthday tomorrow! I’ve thought of everything else than that the last months, because of my exams and now when Irish suddenly became sick, so it’s quite weird to think about... also I’m not going to do anything special at all except from visiting the ponies and preparing for my exam on Thursday 🙈

As I Often say , a picture speaks to a general mood or theme in ones Riding
To me this picture lacks what I call a feeling of Dynamic . George Morris use to call if “ implosion “ I’ve heard it called “ volume “ and a million other things. I simply call it “Life “. For me I always try to remember that “ collection “ requires more energy than lengthening. As “ collection “ as opposed to just “ going slow “requires a deeper step from behind which drips the croup and elevates the shoulders. Extreme examples of the degree of redistribution of weight can be seen in movements such as pirouette, passage and of course Piaf.
But it all starts with the basics. ie demanding the horse carry you forward with enthusiasm ( not MPH / or running thru the bridle ) and at the same time remain light to your rein aids. This is the heartbeat of any form of Riding.
On other noted
You seem to be leaning in to the right , with your left shoulder higher . This translates to an uneven distribution of weight across your horses’ dorsal muscles . It’s certainly nothing to lose sleep over , but it is worth working on
Lastly there are two straight lines from elbow to bit
You’ve got the one we all look at Down Cold
That’s the
Side view.
The second and often overlooked is what
I call the 🎯aerial “ view. Looking down from above your arm and rein should create a tangent line that could be seen if , for example
A drone ‘s camera was directly above your horse Your elbows seem to be a bit pulled out away from your upper body
This breaks the line and tends to stiffen your forearm and wrist , which can prevent you from having a truly feeling , following arm. But all in all your basic position is quite strong which will make these adjustments quite easy.
Just remember ( especially in Dressage ) which can
Slip into loads of repetition that your horse gets to be ridden
Out far away from the Dressage Court. Many of my
Dressage training friend love trail rides. And don’t shy away from hopping over a tiny log etc. Everybody
Needs a change of page once and again. !! Good Luck"

Here’s a video from one of our first shows this year. I love looking back at old videos and seeing what I did well on and what I can improve on. This video is from a english pleasure class that we took first in. I’m so proud of what Whisky and I have accomplished. Two years ago, I would have never thought that Whisky and I would be showing, and I would have never thought that we would be placing first in an english pleasure class. When I look back to moments like this, I feel so proud of all of the hard work I put into training Whisky. When my Nana bought Whisky, I wasn’t a very good rider and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with horses in the future. Whisky was a very green horse when we first got him so riding him was very different from riding all of the lesson horses and lease horses I had ridden before. Whisky and I together made our goals happen and we pushed through all of the struggles. I never thought that I would ever be able to train a horse like Whisky, and I’m so glad that I put in all the time and effort to train him. After two and a half years of training Whisky, I finally feel so proud of how far we have come. We still have a long way to go, but I’m very proud of how far we’ve come. Thank you to everyone who’s helped me throughout my journey with Whisky. I especially want to thank my Nana @jeannieberrall for making this all possible. I’m so excited to see what happens in the future with Whisky. But for now, we have a lot more to work on.

He was the first horse of my own and the first horse I ever had a ‘bond’ with. Before I started riding BB, I would be petrified of a cross pole let alone a straight jump, but he taught me to trust horses again and built up my confidence enough for us to jump 3ft and any log or gorse bush we could find on the forest! He is so so talented and he taught me how to get him and other horses into an outline which I could never get my head around before. He brought out the best in me and filled my life full of so much joy, happiness and laughter. It is safe to say we have put in blood sweat and tears to get us to where we are today and I am devastated to be saying goodbye to him so soon but it gives me comfort knowing that he is going to be having a long, healthy and happy retirement in the beautiful Cornwall countryside. I am so grateful to have been given such an amazing opportunity to have ridden such an amazing horse with my own ménage and direct access to the New Forest- it has been one of the most wonderful and surreal experiences of my life! I will miss his whinny when he sees me coming to his field, his quirky character, our amazing adventures and his endless amounts of love but I am looking forward to what the future holds ❤️

After Melbourne 3DE Callum always has time to reflect on the season that’s been. They’ve had some great high’s in 2018 with some solid 3* results on Bentley and achieving their goal for the first half of the year in qualifying for 4*. At only 9yo he continues to improve across the board and we’re hoping for an exciting second half of the year together.

This season hasn’t been without its heartbreak though. His best horse Joie du Lys suffered a serious tendon injury that at this point looks to have ended his competitive career. Devastated with the news that his beautiful imported mare Victoria also died at the vets’ during a routine procedure after just starting her ridden career so promisingly. His other FEI level horse Apollo has been sold to a fantastic home but leaves a big shoes to fill.

Unfortunately while Callum have some big gaps in his team that will take some filling he will be working hard over the winter months to bring on his young horses. He aims to hit the ground running next season with Spider, Blue, Ralph & Socks.

There are some big NSW events coming up in the second half of the year including the 3*’s at Tamworth, Canberra, Goulburn & Albury for which he has Bentley aiming towards. All going well Callum may have a shot at the Adelaide 4* in November otherwise the big CCI3* at Wallaby Hill in December.

POSTING TO SPREAD AWARNESS AND TO HELP OTHERS! You might encounter this rare disorder in your equestrian career, so help spread awareness and tag your friends ❤
My horse Bambi, my love and my life ❤ who I have had for 6 years has Equine Headshaking Syndrome,
This condition is extremely painfull and a horse with symptoms should not be ridden!! I only rode for the lengt of the video because my vets NEEDED IT, to HELP HIM! I have done everything in my power to figure this out, countless medications, treatments, CT scan, therapists.. The vets suggested to put him down...EHS is a condition where a horse will flip his head in reaction to sunlight, wind, movement, stress, etc. It has many different causes, some are allergies. Bambi is a trigeminal shaker, which means that the nerve is "infected" and is sending pain signals down his nose. The horse can display mild annoyance to the sensations, or he may exhibit sheer panic and extreme pain. Some horses will strike at their noses with their forelegs, others may simply scratch their noses on everything they can find.
He got this condition very suddenly and severely two summers ago, I knew what it was the second it started because I had already seen it in a horse at my old riding school. I was devastated, I cried my eyes out for days 💔 I called the vet immediately, but this is a rare condition and vets don't know much about it.. there are a billion reasons of why horses get it, and almost all cases are different. Long story short-
We FINALLY seem to have found help, the last 8 months he has been given IRAP treatment, 10ml of concentrated bloodplasma once a week, in addition to omega 3 and turmeric! And he has been completely shake free for a while! ♥️This is a condition that can come and go.. first sign of it was in 2014, then it went away untill feb 2016 and we’ve been fighting it since... Bambi is a horse who loves to work, and when it came back it was really violent, and he would shake after 20m walking.. Praying that this treatment continues to work ♥️♥️ Slowly bringing him back to work now, maby he will show again? 😍 More about Bambis case just search #findacureforbambi

Thank you Egypt, the great pyramids of Giza, all the beautiful people who helped me when I needed help, my sister and BFF @bokhara 👼, yoga, meditation, mantras, cacao ceremonies every day🍫, the 2 Mohammad’s who were there for me, Moses the camel🐪, Moses the albino horse🦄, the hot leo sun and vast mysterious desert that teaches so much, the powerful eclipse portal, 8/8 lions gate🦁, the Meridien spa💦, thank God and the entire universe for teaching me so much about letting go, trusting, over coming fears, deepening my heart for compassion💛, expanding my understanding of the ancient and infinite wisdom of the universe💫, empowering my soul and confirming my purpose and mission in life infinitely. Beyond words. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. 🙏 PS. For anyone asking and/ or wondering, the camels and horse that i have ridden were not abused (to my knowledge). Not all the animals are mistreated. The post I shared was after a very extreme situation I witnessed. I did also see some horses dead in the desert, but some are well and wonderful. It’s like anything in life, there are always some who need help and others doing well, whether it’s orphans, elephants or horses or people... this world is so beautiful and it also needs a lot of love and healing. 🙏❤️🌎🙌🏼 #ciao #amor #siempre #theflowstate

Pumpkin: a 23-year-old Thoroughbred, an absolute sweetheart, and the first horse who I've felt confident enough to trot and canter on. (We also had an impromptu jump, good thing I stayed on. xD ) He was head shy at first, but as I was grooming him and tacking him up, he shoved his face near my chest and closed his eyes as I pet him for a few minutes. A dream to lead around, such a good boy, love of my life. ❤️
2. Louise: a wonderfully calm 17-year-old Arabian who is the first one I've met in person or ridden. (By the way, Arabians give me life and I freaked out and texted pictures of her to everyone I know with random strings of letters, with, "ARABIAN" somewhere in there.) She's a gem. Cx (She also put up with my shoddy cues and mix-ups, as it had been a few months since I'd ridden, bless her heart. I forgot to sQUEEZE with the outside leg when turning, and the people watching me ride told me to "kick" her harder when telling her to go, but she's naturally skinny so I was like, "Nope." And she responded just fine. ^~^)
3. Magic: a wonderful 15-year old Haflinger who loves it when you play with his nose, and gets very excited to canter.
4. Obsidian: an Arabian-Friesian cross who has BIG gaits and can get hyper. Lives with Magic. Cx
5. Pride: a Kentucky Mountain Horse who likes the pets but wasn't having the rides the day after everybody had been ridden except for her and she was not happy about it.
6. Remi: a Shegya Arabian who likes to trot more than he likes to walk, lives with Louise and Pride. (Louise loves to follow him, cutie.)
7. Kristy: an American Quarter Horse-Leopard Appaloosa cross who needs a bath from her saddle. She was head shy, but a good girl nonetheless. ❤️💕✨ I met all of these horses-except for Pumpkin-at an event this month, and have known Magic and Remi since last year from the same event. I had to post about these sweethearts, I miss them terribly. (They all received nose kisses before I left, not to worry. I'll see Louise, Remi, Pride, and Pumpkin again soon, though, and I can't wait. Cx)

I rode when I was a little one, would spend my school holidays at horse-riding camps, and every chance I got, you’d find me saddling up and riding for hours. I have so many memories of riding horses all over the world.. on the snow in Switzerland, at a ranch in Colorado, waist deep in water in New Zealand on a horse that was ridden by Viggo Mortensen in Lord of the Rings. They’re the most incredible, regal & elegant creatures, with such a sincere personality. Just look at these beautiful, scruffy, little things 🐎

//-🇬🇧 Good evening❤️ One more Day in School done😛 It’s a little hard to start again and I’m tired when I come home😴 But I have ridden all the ponies today, and it was just a succes!🤗 Because of a lot of rain the last days, there is a little “sea” on riding ground, so I rode dressage without saddle on borg ponies in the water, because it is harder for Them and good training😛 I rode Carrera without saddle on the field and She was so sweet! Did a great job when We practised the “stop signals”🤩
