On this #MemorialDay I remember Army Sgt. Tyler N. Holtz, a high school football teammate of mine and an American hero. Tyler was KIA in Afghanistan on September 24, 2011, while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom.
.
He wrote this note to a fellow soldier to pass on:
.
"Don't make the mistake of thinking I joined the Army out of some misguided, short lived sense of patriotism. My sense of duty and place in the Army was something I couldn't get rid of. I had and have a deep [seated] feeling of pride and joy in my heart and in my soul when I was/am protecting someone. What I was most proud of and died protecting was you, those I loved, my country, and my God."
.
I have the utmost respect for Tyler and those like him who gave their lives for the freedom we live in today. #gonebutneverforgotten #USA 🇺🇸 \|/

Spc. Montrel S. Mcarn, 21, of Raeford, died Monday (Feb 19th 2007) when his unit came under attack in Baghdad. Also killed in the attack was Sgt. Pedro J. Colon, 25, of Cicero, Ill, the Pentagon said in a statement.

Both men were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment based at Fort Hood, Texas. They deployed to Iraq in November.

A friend of the Mcarn family declined comment on behalf of the family when contacted Tuesday by The Fayetteville Observer, saying relatives were distraught over the death.

Mcarn joined the Army as an armor crewman in February 2005, Fort Hood officials said. His awards and decorations included the Iraq Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon
