Visit grocery stores and playgrounds, we say. They’re two places to get a not-quite-as-touristy perspective. Today we added a third.

This morning Lo got a lesson on ropes course safety and then was trusted to go out and follow the rules. Take leaps but not be an idiot.

This afternoon we went back to the BMX course. She went hard. Then she wiped out hard. I got her home with piggyback rides and lollipop bribes. After an hour of not being able to put weight on her leg, we headed to the ER.
At home, this would’ve been agonizing. A hurt child is the worst. Our first job, we tell her, is to keep her safe. But our friend Paul also said you gotta let them do stuff, even if they break stuff. So we embrace hanging from high things and leaping from high things and doing things that make my mom knees buckle.

The agony at home would’ve been, also in a gross part, financial. What if she needed a cast? Or god, surgery? What would we do? Beyond having nearly a month left far from home, that would’ve been a burden at home that would’ve crippled us as self-employed people. We know the stats of medical financial hardships and we still fall in the lucky camp.

Tonight? We spent under two hours with incredibly friendly, smart people at the local ER. They were kind to Loie, patient with us, thoughtful and deliberate. X-rays and a check revealed a painful deep bruise but no break. All in all, it was around $200 dollars. That’s it. We stood there and asked about the future bills we’d surely get. No, no, take your daughter home. She’ll be fine and you’re all set.

There’s got to be an easy lesson here somewhere. That countries that embolden their young people to stretch and try and grow also support them when they fall and don’t bankrupt their parents. That surely builds resiliency in families and in kids. We’re so off in the US. We bubble wrap kids and then ruin the parents anyway when the kids do get a busted bone.

At the end of the day Lo said “Well, if I have to walk slow, at least I’ll see more at the art museum.” Here’s to a kid who can see the bright side. And to systems that help them (and their parents) take good care of what matters.

In a way, I assigned myself with the responsibility of looking after and playing with them when the rest were busy with other responsibilities. I even became a human rollercoaster - piggyback style, with the heaviest passenger being 33kg or so (and I slept with pain relief patches on my back for 2 nights straight 😶) It wasnt easy keeping eyes on so many young kids (5 to 9 of them at once), even if it was just for like 2-3 hours or so a day, but I guess it was an selfish act of mine - to choose to look after the kids instead of taking up other responsibilities. I chose to momentarily escape from the sad emotions by focusing on the kids - their innocence, happy laughter and pure joy just by climbing around.
-
But it was also the kids' innocence that led to questions like.. 'Tai Ma (great-grandma) is sleeping inside? When can she wake up?' 'Where will Tai Ma go?' 'No more see Tai Ma?' Or when a 4 year old kept asking me to carry her to see Tai Ma. Or when a 10 year old said, 'I was still thinking of visiting Tai Ma the next day but this happened. I am very sad.' Or my niece's absolute silence on the day when she knew about Tai Ma's departure..
-
I thought the kids would be impatient and bored during the long praying procedures when we had to walk continuous rounds, but they were all rather well-behaved and followed throughout. I thought that yesterday morning would have been tough for them since they woke up early despite sleeping late and that would made them cranky. Above all, I thought they wouldn't really feel the sadness - but I was entirely wrong. After we walked the final round and paid our very last respects, some of the kids cried very badly - they were really sad knowing that they would not see Tai Ma again, including my 5 year old nephew. Kids.. and their emotions. So real and raw.. #shinethoughtjourney

Working a boulder deep in RMNP.. I took a good fall and broke my ankle.
Luckily, Dr. @deej_ums was able to tape up my ankle and make me a gnarly splint The thought of navigating myself through a talus field and then somehow hiking four miles back to the car... seem to be impossible. Luckily both @deej_ums Deejay and @hunterdamianiart had a kneepad for climbing. With both kneepads on, I crawled a couple hundred yards up and down boulders to make it to the tree line. Hopping on 1 foot with walking sticks through dense woods was too difficult, Deejay gave me a piggyback ride back to the main trail. Luckily we ran into a park ranger relatively quick, she called to have some crutches hiked up to me.
4 miles and over 6 hours later, I make it to the car.
I can definitely say.. walking 4 miles downhill on a rocky trail, on crutches... was by far the most difficult thing Iv ever done. My crutch leg is shot.. my hands and wrist are bruised.. damn crutches gave me armpit burns from rubbing so much... No work for a while... no climbing for a long time. I’m going to lose my damn mind.
Thank you @biographyofbree for carrying all my stuff that whole way
Thank you Deejay and Hunter for all the help and moral support. I apologize for cutting such an awesome day so short.

Removed the foam from the rear seat and retained the plastic cover. This allows for a more ergonomic crouch. You can't whack the throttle open wide in the first two gears but you need to ease in the power unless you don't want the front wheel to hit the ground, in that case keep the throttle pinned and she'll point skywards until you hit the 4th gear.

Overtaking even at 150kmph+ is a breeze and you don't need to wait for the power build, the ECU map from Celtics tuning ensures there is power all through the rev range. I might cap the rev limiter at 14.5k though because I think the engine might just blow with a mistimed down shift.

Fuel consumption is something I haven't measured and honestly with this kind of power delivery, I don't really care. Top speed run vs the custom piggyback tune and the stock Powertronics tune is pending.

Today we ditched math and instead went on a hike. Because our math books will always be here, but this day won’t. The weather was perfect and the wildflowers are in bloom and it’s Indigo’s last day of being 10 years old. So we observed bugs and found walking sticks. We got a little lost. Hazel’s legs got tired and she hitched a piggyback ride when she could. Iris tucked a flower behind Hazel’s ear. @readaloudrevival calls these “just because we can days”. I won’t always have all six of my children together in my little nest, but when they go their separate ways I hope these will be the days they always remember. 🍃🌸
