These are a few ways to know and ensure that your dog or cat is healthy:
1) Feed a species appropriate, balanced raw diet. If this can’t be done, incorporate some raw and fresh food into their dry or canned diet.
2) Provide your pet with adequate exercise. Walks, running, swimming, fetch, etc.
3) Get blood tests done at the vet.
4) Determine whether your dog or cat has healthy skin and coat (a soft coat, no dandruff, hot spots, redness, fur loss, and dry nose) .
5) Does your pet have clean teeth and gums? No tartar/plaque build up and no white gums.
6) Their stool is firm and not often discolored.
7) Regular veterinary check-ups to make sure there aren't any internal health problems.

In July of 2016 my life was turned on its side when I received the call from my doctor with the results of the biopsy of a nodule on my thyroid gland.

When the doctor said "you have cancer" I had an incredibly scary and uncomfortable feeling, my heart sank to my feet. It was like being hit by a freight train.

My doctor is awesome and explained to me that this form of cancer is not one that is typically deadly especially when detected at a somewhat early stage.
.
I was still uncomfortable, still afraid of all the "what if?" questions. I went mentally to a dark place where I even blamed myself and wondered if bad choices from my past were what gave me cancer.
.
I started to wonder if all of the work I had done to improve my life and my health was all for naught.
.
Being diagnosed with cancer was totally out of left field and could happen to anyone, I knew I had to shift my perspective!
.
I decided to treat the time between my diagnosis and surgery to remove the cancer like a competition prep and work on getting in to my best shape possible. I hired @bradbrowe to do my training and nutrition protocol. I worked hard every day and was committed to the process, my health markers all improved significantly and I got to the leanest I had ever been without losing muscle.

When I went in for surgery October 19th 2016 I went in strong and confident. As of then I have been 100% cancer free in all follow up tests and I am so thankful to everyone on my team.

Nutrition & health are SO super individualized so I’ve steered away from sharing much about my personal approach to food, but ever since I had food poisoning a little over a year ago I’ve had symptoms of what might be a food intolerance — for me it’s been acne/breakouts, but symptoms range from bloating, gas & constipation, to headaches, nausea, depression, anxiety, & fatigue. The hope is that once I get an idea about what I’m most intolerant to, I can make a few adjustments to my diet for a bit (by reducing the inflammatory foods) to allow my gut to heal so that eventually I can add back in whatever food is causing problems. The goal is to have the LEAST restrictive diet in the long run 😌 Health is not linear — I’m trying to do my own research, & urge you to do the same. We are alll different people with different gut microbiomes, so what works (or doesn’t work) for my gut, might not be the same for you. ****While at home tests may be a good starting point, I can’t stress enough the importance of following up with a functional medicine doc or dietitian to get more individualized guidance & oversight. My days have been filled with numerous doctor appointments and diagnostic tests at the hospital. In between appointments, sometimes in the hospital waiting room and lobbies, I’m trying to study for Step 1, which I take in March. In addition, trying to go to my physical and occupational therapy and meetings at school.

In all honesty, it has been a rough couple of weeks. Especially bc I’m barely getting any nutrition.

But we have answers. I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis. Basically my stomach is partially paralyzed and not able to digest my feeds, causing my feeds to sit in my stomach for hours. Eventually after so much pain, distension, and nausea I end up having to drain everything that is sitting in my stomach through my Gtube into the sink. My weight is steadily declining each day. And to top it off I was diagnosed with POTS, which is a malfunction of the automatic nervous system.

We’re going to try one medication for the Gastroparesis for a couple of days, but if I still can’t tolerate my feeds by Sunday, then I’ll have to have surgery to place another type of feeding tube. A J-tube will be placed into my small intestine so my feeds will be delivered there bypassing my stomach.

I just wanted to give a little update bc I’ve gotten so many messages asking if I’m ok. Tbh, I’m not ok and I just don’t have enough reserve to be as active on social media right now. I’m barely making it through the day. Our goal has been just to keep my sugar from falling until we finalize our plans.

God has given me more battles to face on top of my extensive medical history, but at the end of the day God is so Good. And I wouldn’t be where I am today without my incredible teams of physicians. Thank you guys for checking up on me. My journey has been incredibly difficult, but I will never stop fighting 💜

Alle Jahre wieder kommt nicht das Christkind sondern mein großes Blutbild. 
Seit über 23 Jahre ernähre ich mich vegan und mir wurde so oft ein ein kurzes Leben mit Mangelerscheinungen und großem Leid vorhergesagt. Erschreckend für mich ist, dass noch immer sehr viele Allgemeinärzte diese Meinung vertreten und somit Ihr völliges Unwissen zum Thema Ernährung beweisen.
Doch ich bin mir sicher es wird der Tag kommen an dem auch der letzte Arzt die gesundheitlichen Vorteile einer rein pflanzlichen Ernährung verstanden hat und diese empfiehlt. Bis dahin lasse ich meine Blutwerte checken um immer den Beweis für diese ausgewogene und gesunde Ernährungsweise bei mir zu haben.

My fitness journey has been a long confusing one. I started trying to focus on my health about 3 years ago. I changed my lifestyle completely. I used to drink a lot, eat fast food and junk food everyday. I would always drink soda, energy drinks and coffee. NEVER drink water. I would eat a lot of ... My fitness journey has been a long confusing one. I started trying to focus on my health about 3 years ago. I changed my lifestyle completely. I used to drink a lot, eat fast food and junk food everyday. I would always drink soda, energy drinks and coffee. NEVER drink water. I would eat a lot of frozen easy foods and lots of desserts and candy. I never exercised. I felt sluggish and had daily headaches.

I gained a bunch of weight, progressively just felt worse and worse and needed a change. So I started following people on IG and met someone who got me into daily workouts and better nutrition. I stopped eating fast food and junk. Stopped drinking. Stopped drinking sugary drinks and tried to focus more on drinking only water and eating fruits, veggies and lean protein. My daily headaches went away and i felt WAY better. Lost a little bit of weight.

Did this for about 2 years and wondered why I wasn't seeing the changes that other people were when we were doing all the same things. I thought maybe I needed to eat cleaner or workout harder. I thought maybe it could be my thyroid preventing me from making any progress. I went to my Dr. and he said birth control wouldn't prevent me from losing weight and lectured me on diet and exercise. I got my thyroid test(TSH) and it came back on the lower side of normal. So I kept working out and following my meal plan.

I was diagnosed with acid reflux, rosacea and periodontal disease (a type of gum disease). My doctor told me inflammation was causing the rosacea and was a major contributor to the gum disease.

I decided to take my birth control out and see if I can start making the progress I wanted. I ended up getting pretty bad cystic acne and gaining more weight. I noticed a bump in my throat and the dr told me it was a cyst on my thyroid which has ruptured and was bleeding. I had another TSH test done and although my levels had dropped even lower they were still in the normal range so they said nothing needed to be done.

Last week I took a big step and went to a naturopath. I'm going back today to start getting tests done and hopefully get down to what's causing all these problems 🤞🏻

Long post | Right before 2018, I was told I had high LDL, slightly hypertensive, my left eye would go completely blind when I would would be in the dark (flashlight to the eye, saw nothing), awful back and neck pain, coupled with severe migraines that Dr.s thought could have been being caused by tumors. After 7 months of tests, blood work, scans, I lost track of my training and caring for what God has entrusted to me... ME. My well intentioned Dr.s desired me to go on meds immediately (and I believe for some, this could be the best option if you were unable to control these things naturally). I asked my Dr.s for 3 months to change this naturally. I started the year off laser focused on my health. Currently, my LDL is within normal limits, zero migraines (thanks to healthy eating, decreased weight, and Dr. Mark Ashely @VitalHealth WPB), back and neck are feeling amazing thanks to (Dr. Ashley & Athletic OT Pedro Ferrer), my eye is going blind less and less each week, working on my hypertension, running again, training again for the #Spartan #Trifecta with the #WestPalmWarriors, and eating completely clean. I say all this to say, I realize this is the temple of the Holy Spirit and I want to honor it, keep it healthy, be able to have energy to play with my kids and be here a long time with my wife. This has been trying but very intentional for sure. My guys, @kevinbarrjr, @completeaudio, @jbent71, & Steve have challenged, prayed for, and kept me focused. My beautiful wife @kristen_k_lang challenges and believes in me. She loves me (30lbs heavier or lighter), and takes care of what I’m putting into this body. I want to be used by God for years to come and care for what’s been given to me. I don’t know your struggle, your pain, your situation but I am praying for you to start your process. Accountability, nutrition, working out, getting actual, proper help, and admitting (if it’s true) that you might be a part of the problem is difficult. #BeenThere. Hello everyone, thank you so much for all your messages of support, it means a great deal to me 🙏 I am on the mend, resting and taking advice from everyone who is kindly helping me. I'm sharing my story in the hope that it may help anyone else who has issues with their gut. I have been reading a great deal about the correlation between the gut and the brain and how eating the right kind of food for you (we are all different) has a direct effect on our mood and wellbeing. I am throwing everything at getting back on track taking a medical and also holistic approach working with a brilliant nutritionist. I have been diagnosed with Diverticultis and I am possibly Caeliac as well (more tests to come). The operation that I had was a result of complications from these conditions and leaving it far too long before seeking some answers. I am now looking to completely change my diet and I will start to share my journey here with you all.
It's also been a revelation to take a break from my Social Media channels. On reflection I think I got so wrapped up in wanting to share with you all my experiences that I fell into what can only be described as a #instafrenzy 😂 Giving into the feeling of urgency and importance to post something every day and checking my phone all of the time. It feels like this has been a distraction and possible avoidance as to what has been happening with my health. Truth is I love connecting with you all and I am always wanting to share some of my experiences of good people in this world doing good things but I have realised that it is not necessary to be thinking about engaging every day. There are already over 70 million photos uploaded on @instagram every day and it feels like the key now is quality over quantity.

It’s all about balance - no amount of likes and follows on Social Media will come close to a meeting in real life and forming a connection. Now more then ever I must remind myself of this and just continue on the path that I am walking as it feels like the right path. Thank you for listening and have a great day. A few months back I began to research deeper into nutrition after an article on nutrition preventing Alzheimer’s sparked my interest. What I found was that while I was healthy, while I had lost 80lbs and maintaining, while I felt good, I was doing things AND not doing thing to possibly hurt my health. I made a switch. I made a change really focusing on food for health and disease prevention. I tripled my daily veggie intake, doubled and added in more types of healthy fats, and improved the quality but cut back on protein. I’ve cut out all carbs/grains but sweet potato’s, fruits, and those found in veggies. I snack on a handful of nuts/berries daily. I drink bone broth daily. I have eliminated added sugars, poor quality oils, and processed foods my daily diet. Not that I ate a lot of any of those, but some even hidden in things like spices and I was using convenience food like bars/powders. And guess what? I’m down 10lbs, have less hunger, more energy, and my recent heart health lab tests came back on point. Safe to say, it’s working. I didn’t realize I could feel better until I realized I could be healthier. What’s your starting point? Doesn’t matter where you are, just start now. Today. You can be healthier, if you just start. I hate to break it to you... but they’re 110% correct. please internalize this. if you want to start feeling better, having more energy, & helping your body get healthy, having a good relationship with food is your first step & absolutely necessary!!!!
eating whatever you want, then doing an hour of ab exercises is not going to do anything for you (trust me, I’ve tried!). the best thing you can do for your body is to FUEL it. listen to what your body is telling you - sometimes this means heading to the doctors office & doing some tests. sometimes this just means cutting down your sugar intake. for me personally, this meant cutting out gluten (the only thing I cut out completely) & keeping my dairy & red meat to a minimum. I then centered my diet around managing my PCOS - things I could do to help rid me of my symptoms. these things include: cutting my sugar intake (15-20g per day, preferably natural sugars) & low carb (not to be confused with the keto diet). If you want to find exact numbers that work for you & your body type/goals, hop on to google & try a few calorie calculators or/& a macro calculator - but even better, hire a health/nutrition coach.
I don’t technically count my macros/weigh or record my food - ever. (I tend to have some OCD-like habits, so I stay clear of things that might make me become obsessive #mentalhealth). but these numbers help give me general idea of where I want to be. I just keep a mental note of what I am putting into my body. if I ever think I go over on carbs or under on protein one day, so what? No big deal. I’ll try to be better the next day. there is NO point in getting upset or obsessive about these numbers - life is to be ENJOYED. so eat the dang burger when you’re out with friends & stop worrying!!!

Four years ago I collapsed in the park because I was overworked, said yes to everything, was seriously miserable in my relationship and not sleeping properly. My diet went out the window because my work load was so intense and I neglected the things that were important. Eventually my body couldn’t handle anymore stress and I ended up bed bound for three years straight.

On the left I look really thin, tired and unhappy - a shadow of my former self. And on the right I look healthy, much happier and way more energised. .
I’m sharing this post to express the extent at which stress can affect you PHYSICALLY and MENTALLY and stop you from living and thriving.

This post also demonstrates my passion and dedication to helping individuals who are feeling overwhelmed and can’t get out of bed in the morning.

Whilst some of you may not see much of a visual change I can assure you that inside I’m a completely different person. For all of you out there struggling here are my top 3 how recovery tips:
1️⃣ Get enough sleep and start to dim down at night. I’m talking about putting your phone on airplane mode or out of reach so you are not distracted.
2️⃣ Slow the fuck down and say NO. You are burnt out because you have too much on your plate already.
3️⃣ Eat the right amount of food everyday and take targeted nutrients. Essentially this means eating around the clock and running key tests to identify nutrient deficiencies and supplement accordingly.

Dr. McHale is a medical doctor specializing in proactive health using the tools of Functional Medicine, Strength and Conditioning and Intravenous Nutritional Therapy.

So it’s been 5 weeks since being diagnosed with #hashimotos and only 8.5 weeks between these photos.. The first photo was after my very first appt with my specialist where we decided I would go on a low FODMAP diet to really get to the bottom of my bloating & tummy issues. I did this for 3 weeks before having some more tests which showed I had Hashimotos. From there I dove straight into the #AIP protocol to try and treat myself with nutrition before resorting to medication & I have been following it ever since. -
You can honestly just see from these photos the difference that it has made. For me this isn’t about a number on the scale, it’s 100% solely about my internal health. Before I started this journey I already ate a “clean diet” 80-90% of the time. I’m not a fan of junk food or sugars but I would treat myself every now and then because #balance BUT it goes to show that what we see as “healthy” was still not right for my body & my insides. (Not everyone is the same! This is just ME) -
I have about another 4 weeks before getting retested to see where my Hashimotos is at and I’m nervous but excited to know if what I have been doing and the changes I have made to my lifestyle have actually helped! I know it’s going to take longer than 3 months to get this under wrap but if I can see some improvement from my tests, I will know it’s all worth it! -

The NHANES surveys draw from a large sampling of the U.S. population, typically ages 1 to 90 years old. In this study, participants included adults ages 20-59 as well as 60 and over. Dr. Arab and co-researcher Dr. Alfonso Ang found that study participants with higher walnut consumption performed significantly better on a series of six cognitive tests.

Dr. Arab, "It is exciting to see the strength of the evidence from this analysis across the U.S. population supporting the previous results of animal studies, that have shown the neuroprotective benefit from eating walnuts; and it's a realistic amount - less than a handful per day (13 grams)." Sterling is one of our newest Special Needs pups. He is a cleftie with possible hydrocephalus and eye issues. He will be seeing the specialist.
We take in clefties and special needs puppies from whoever wants to surrender them. Often that is breeders. We have been criticized by others in rescue for this but I have no problem with trying to save a life. You can’t write off a whole group of people just because you may disagree with them. Not everyone who breeds is a puppy miller!
As always, I encourage you to adopt first. I encourage you to choose seniors, and adult dogs. They have just as much joy and love to give.
But if you do choose to buy a puppy - please do your due diligence!
Do not buy from someone just because they have a cute IG page, from CL, a pet store, or online portal.
Ask about health tests, nutrition etc and get off your arse and go see how the pups are raised and treated. Simple 😬🤘

I had this fatigue for a VERY long time and it was an extremely difficult time and one that took a while to deal with & accept ✋

Those of you who have been following me for a while, you will know that my anxiety has got SO much better and life is just SO much better in general 🤗 But recently my exhaustion has reached a new level and I am feeling very nauseous 🤢 My body didn't and doesn't feel right and I have a pretty good instinct about stuff like this ✋

Every doctor dismissed it as anxiety after running a few blood tests and said there was nothing else they could do 😢

So I carried on, trying not to make it obvious to everyone I was so exhausted! People asked me why I was so tired when I seemed to sleep well and didn't go out drinking much......I KNOW!! I DON'T KNOW EITHER 😩

But I HAD to find out WHY 😠 Because it was ruining my life 😓

About 2 weeks ago one of my friends introduced me to a wonderful woman who was a PNI/nutrition consultant and I figured I had nothing to lose by going to see her!! She said my symptoms didn't sound normal (THANKYOU!!!!) and that I should do a very in-depth stool test to see if it finds anything! And yes....TMI soz 💩

Turns out I have a very nasty parasite which is totally draining my body 🐜 I am actually quite pleased because there is FINALLY a reason I feel so terrible. I was starting to feel like I had to come to terms with living like this 😓

So now there is a plan in place to get this all sorted thank GOD and I cannot wait to feel better 🤗

The reason I am posting about this is because I was told by so many doctors that there was nothing wrong with me but I just KNEW something wasn't right 🚫 So listen to your body and listen to yourself ☝️

Then eventually their body hits that threshold of whatever markers it is that are being tested for that particular diagnosis and then it's positive. You have the power to intervene long before you get to this point a high majority of times..

Let's say you get the standard blood work done every year with your doctor, usually consisting of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) and a Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP). Most people think "this will tell me everything about my health", right? Well, not really. These tests are great, but are more aimed towards giving a general overview of major organ function and basic blood status but doesn’t give any insights to your vitamin and mineral status, which are essential for health! —
But how important are vitamins + minerals in the body, really?

I'll answer this one in 6 words: they are very...very VERY important! Some vitamins and amino acids are even categorized as "essential" meaning just that- they are essential to our survival and if not acquired through diet or supplementation we would die. —
For example, B vitamins help with energy production, making red blood cells, skin and nerve health, and the making of our DNA. Vitamin A helps to form and maintain healthy body tissues. Vitamin D is critical for the proper absorption of calcium, mood balance, and cognitive function.

Luckily, we live in a day and age where most of us have access to vitamins, supplements, and healthy foods that could provide us with a well-rounded diet, right? So why then would we even suspect that any of us could have a micronutrient deficiency? —
Well, the answer is pretty complex, but to summarize it’s because your diet, the way you live your life, the way your body absorbs, assimilates, and processes vitamins and minerals are all completely different than anyone else! This is called biochemical individuality and it explains why one diet or style of eating can work really wonderfully for one person, but not another! —

I was LEGIT freaking the f out. I skipped my period. By a month and a half 😳 I took so many pregnancy tests I coulda had a small vacation🤑🤣 All honesty, I don’t wanna be pregnant again. It’s beautiful, it’s amazing, Go you if you are trying and/or already are... but I’m done havin babies! 2 is my max! So yeah I been a little stressed. I’m sure that stress didn’t help. So why didn’t I go to the doc?

Growing up my cycle was super irregular. My first pregnancy came even after not having a period for 3 months. The last 3 years however have been regular AF! I track my temperature + ovulation and cycle to a T... so I was VERY shocked when July came and went with no Aunt Flo... could be stress on my body from surgery in June, new weight program 🏋🏻‍♀️ in July. Could be the stress of travel + life stuff. Could be a million things. But you know what’s cool? Our bodies are fuckin cool that’s what! I kept my nutrition continuous. Kept my shakes in the daily routine. Thank God for this health stuff! Kept my water up and rode it out. I had a crazy long high of energy and feel goods... even amidst the scare of prego... and my body did what it does. Today isn’t so bad. I’m not bloated like I used to be on day 1. I’m not grumpy or grouchy. I’m a bit fatigued, but that’s normal. I feel good. This bloody broad (pun intended!) will not get me down! I will take my self care time. I will chill a bit. But I will not let it be an excuse to be anything less than amazing. My biggest pet leave is when people blame their circumstance (period, pregnancy, lack of sleep, other people) for their actions, words or crappy behaviors. You won’t get that from me. ▫️
What helps? BE AWARE! Track your cycle ladies! Track how you feel, energy, mood. Write that shit down. Compare it for a few months. You’ll see patterns and can work with that to still be your best! I’ve actually been in a course with an amazing mentor helping/guiding me in this whole tracking and syncing process! I can connect y’all if you want. Either way, let this fire inside fuel you to learn + improve. Us Women are amazing creatures 🔥💃🏻♥️ #period
