When @asha.bhosle became my first abiding love. Could have been the time I was a baby when I saw the first ever TV programme of hers. Yeh Hai Asha had me hooked. Or maybe it was that one rainy evening in Prabhu Kunj when she read pages from her autobiography which is yet to be published. She's so honest, so candid I fear for her. And this is the same candour I look for in other showbiz people. Just no one like her.
On her 85th birthday I can pick no one particular favourite Asha song of mine. Remember she was part of my childhood when she husked Sapna mera toot gaya (Khel Khel mein). The voice in front of me which has beguiled me forever is now plying me with food, pallu firmly tucked into her saree. The voice in my heart will never say no to a generous helping of Ashaaai. Now and forever.

His visceral performance had left us stumped. But he was so unassuming and bashful. We had some good times. Hanging out with our mutual friend #tabu on the sets of films like #ghaat and #dilpematleyaar. Watching his craft. There were many ups and downs in his career. In due course he also married the lovely #shabana who had made her debut in #Kareeb.
Whatever the fate of his films you could not fault his performance. Be it in #rajneeti. #shool and more recently the beautifully heartbreaking performance in #Aligarh. @bajpayee.manoj is to the manner born and recently the #masterclass for Filmfare with him proved just that. He’s articulate and his years of heartache, hardships have given his performance a beautiful seamlessness. You can see that in #gangsofwasseypur. I wish him continued success and hope this is the beginning of yet another successful stint at the movies. Such wonderful actors are rare, they should be cherished

Every once in a while comes a film that makes you believe in popular movie again. @dirrajivmenon does that with #sarvathaalamayam. A beautiful confluence of popular music and classical. I’d hate to give out the story. But it’s relevant and said with a lot of compassion and kindness. A quality I greatly miss in the movies. A sublime score by @arrahman. Rajiv tells the tale straight from his heart, and despite its simplicity, there is a range of emotions and subtext the film carries. It’s an important film and cannot wait for it to release soon. It would be a cliche to call the frames a wet painting on a canvas. It’s visually fecund with some enormously moving moments. Mesmerised by the raag and the taals and the robust quality of the #mridangam. How simply a complex tale is told. Life itself is simple and veteran actor #nedumudivenu tells us that truth yet again with his performance. The surprise package is ofcourse @gvprakash who pitches his career best. Absolutely loved @aparna.balamurali and hope she goes from strength to stength. Some movies tell a great story. Some movies remind you about life itself. And some movies tell you that art comes from a pure space in the heart. #sarvathaalamayam (Tamil) is that movie.

P.s. rajiv please make a film a year. No more long gaps.

So amazing to see @mickeycontractor working with faces spanning and straddling several generations. And yet there is no generation gap. He can quite simply dab make up on to octogenarian singer @asha.bhosle as he can add finishing touches to @madhuridixitnene as he can sit his pet protege @kajol down. Mickey has been a vanguard of an industry and watched women of all assortments and achievements come to him to get their faces done. Through his compassion and innate understanding of the Indian visage, he has honed and chiselled some of the most celebrated faces in this country.
Not one to suffer fools gladly, I’ve seen Mickey patiently handle divas and starling with equal warmth and compassion. His humane quality and his empathy is what sets him apart. He understands the needs of the camera, as much as he understands the medium. The need to “engage”. You could truly say he’s launched a thousand faces. Starting off in the late seventies in films like #kranti working alongside stalwarts like #hemamalini, Mickey cake into his own in the world of advertising and Bollywood. From Nutan to Madhuri dixit to kajol and more lately Alia Bhatt, his brush strokes have embellished many generations and added gloss to many movies.
Magazine shoots have been so much fun watching him, learning from him and like I said his ability to diffuse tension not add to it. Watching him on films like #kuchkuchhotahai to more recently #studentoftheyear.
May his success-streaks with divas and starlings and femme fatales always be as inspired as his journey has been. Mr Contractor it’s been a pleasure knowing you. Go burn!

At the risk of sounding dramatic, It was a life transforming moment. It was a sneak preview for me. @iamsrk made me hear #ayeajnabee. The quintessential heartbreak song. I remember the visual. He had just wrapped up the patchwork of #kuchkuchhotahai. We were deep into the night in the bylanes of film city. And then the strains or #Arrahman’s music oozed out of the sound system. I was hooked. It was a magical moment for me.
The film came and went as the same year as kuch kuch I think. Some memorable vignettes, some magical montages with srk and the beautiful #manishakoirala.
We were very excited when srk had signed the film. As mani ratnam bhakts we were too happy that srk was on board. I think he wanted kajol too. But kajol being kajol couldn’t do the film for whatever reasons. Something tells me, no I’m convinced that the film with srk and kajol would have been #alaypayuthe. That was not to be. So ratnam reportedly wrote another story for which Manisha was the perfect choice. It was also @realpz’s perky debut for which she won the Filmfare. Rahman, Gulzar saab, Farah khan all went on to win Filmfares for #dilse.
The critics dissed it, mani ratnam was soundly criticised but something of the film was impactful. You wanted to dislike it but you couldn’t. You didn’t agree with the politics, the plot was askew. But it wrenched your heart and this was one #goodbad film you wanted to revisit. Manisha was heartbreaking, you wanted her to return to srk. Srk with his sadness and whimsy was lovely as always and brightened up an otherwise morbid film.
The music broke records and #ChaiyyanChaiyyan became something of an anthem as did Lataji’s #jiyajaale.
Whatever be the box office fate of #dilse. It still seemed so right! Twenty years later it still seems so. Just like that magical humid night when Ae Ajnabi pierced the darkness and made a place in our hearts forever.
#20yearsofdilse #manishakoirala #shahrukhkhan #arrahman #gulzar #dilse #maniratnam

She looked bored and disinterested. But she came into the room and we started chatting away like two school girls. Something about @m_koirala that made me want to go back again and again. It was her vulnerability on screen and off it, her warm performances in #khamoshi #bombay #agnisaakshi #1942alovestory #yugpurush that made me warm up to her. I recall the fun photo shoots we would do in between shots while the shooting of #Gupt #akelehumakeletum and #dushman would go on endlessly. Can you imagine doing a full fledged photo shoot between an actual film shoot? Yup, those were fun zany times. I’ve also gone outfit sourcing for her and she gamely wore the stuff that we magazine reporters gave her thinking it was high fashion:) Those days there were no filters, no silly managers and prs to dictate the extent of our associations. When manisha spoke she spoke from the gut. She was raw, uncensored and really warm. Her ability to get into wrong relationships has made me give her many lectures and she would good naturedly ruffle my hair after every dressing down. Manisha made racy copy off and on record. And I would have to edit so much of it. Suffice to say I’ve seen her at her most vulnerable and most strongest. More than anything sometimes it’s the shared history and passage of time and memories that keeps people together.
We had more ups than downs. I look back at her with a lot of fondness and affection. On her birthday today I wish her many more years of good health, joy and happiness. As a reporter she was one of the important milestones in my life. She showed me kindness and compassion when she could have dismissed me as just another face among the swarm of journos. She didn’t. Thank you for being you Manisha. Happy birthday:)

Just a fortnight before we met, he had a runaway marriage to Amrita singh. Understandably his parents were upset. Saif Ali khan was 22 or thereabouts. So I met him as rookie reporter he was shooting for a awful film at an even more awful place which stank to high heavens of fish. Me being younger than him must have asked him some unthinking off colour questions not realising the implications of a hurried marriage or its repercussions. He sized me up made a couple of snarky comments and then chatted away happily. It was a good interview I remember.
Saif always appeared susegaad to me. Not for him the crazy swirl of hectic movie business. He chose to be far from the madding crowd shining deliciously in films like #dilchahtahai #ekhasinathi #kalhonaho #beingcyrus #omkara. His most recent turns in #sacredgames have won him hosannas. He plays the weary, anxious somewhat defeated police officer to plenary perfection.
I suspect marriage to #kareena has made him easier and more amenable to people. Saif’s a good guy, everyone will tell you that. And can talk about everything under the sun. And he’s happy not playing the quintessential movie star when he drops his guard.
There is art and technique. When he’s good he’s terrific. The artlessness that you see on screen has hours of understanding, processing. And he travels light so it’s easy for him not to make heavy weather about the process of acting. And he’s also deliciously ironic. Every encounter with saif leaves me hysterical, his off the cuff remarks are a hoot! I think he would be perfect making up memes. If sarcasm and easy wit had a soulmate, that would be mr khan.
Happy birthday saif. Walk on the sometimes mild sometimes wild side always. And kick up some more dust.

They can feel each other, touch each other and come to each other’s help in the most implausible circumstances. At some points #sense8 does seem like you’re watching #karanarjun where one character’s physical pain is felt by the other sensate...but probe much deeper it’s sci-fi with a heart and international diabolical plot and villain called whisper.
In the first season, You have eight characters from diametrically different space thrown together at the most alarming moments. So the bus driver who’s also a van Damme fan from Kenya can meet the DJ from london. Connected by heartlines, sensory experiences and zero logic. Parts of it is so well written that you’re willing to suspend disbelief.
Especially moving are the stories of the gay Mexican actor Lito, the transgender Nomi and her lover Amanita, the DJ Riley. Interesting sub plots emphasise the need the reach out to one another and empower in the face of international conspiracies and espionage. The story of female boxer sun and petty thief wolfgang will move you immensely and so will some cheesy though self deprecating dialogue.
And underlying all this far out action, are some witty lines and great humour. The spectacular locales shot over 9 different countries add to charm and snazz. The choreographed action sequences In a bar in Chicago where the police officer can’t barely breathe, the super sexy orgy-ish scene where all the sensates meet, the spiffily choreographed fight sequence in a film within film and an African gangwar shoot out contribute to the thrills. Also check out the thrilling finale shot in Iceland in the end of season 1.
In comparison the Indian sensate portions seem quite wishy washy. The Indian accents also seem a bit off.
Why this series was yanked off the air and then hurriedly concluded with a two hour conclusion instead of a third season is one of those mind numbing corporate decisions via a vis #Netflix, we will never be fathom.
Over all #sense8 is a great visual and aural treat. You can’t help feeling exhilarated and overwhelmed simultaneously.

Two women discover that their respective spouses are gay. And in love with each other. Their world comes crashing down . But what starts off as a contentious combative war of the Roses, ends on a conciliatory note of understanding compassion and kindness in #graceandfrankie.
The incredible lily Tomlin and the never say die and feisty jane Fonda give u their heartbreaking bickering and bonding just as they did years ago plotting to bump off their evil boss in #9to5. They are excellent.
You also get a very accurate and informed understanding of alternate sexuality and gay life. Forget middle age, how do two men handle love and other attendant emotions at the age of 70. For the first time you get a glimpse into the dynamics of alternative sexuality too- nothing is different from hetero normative relations. The feuds, the jealousies, the love. Gender changes nothing. Only the love remains.
Ofcourse it would be tempting to dismiss all this as the problems of the rich with Californian beach houses and dysfunctional children. Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston as the spouses who fall in love are terrific. And bring so much sensitivity and wit to their roles.
But probe deeper and you get an astute and somewhat intense psychological probing about problems that go beyond lubes, dry vaginas, vibrators, empowerment, dealing with divorce at 70. There are very vey moving moments. When Frankie and her husband are moving house with their their two sons and sleep with each other one last time. It’s also interesting to see grace and frankie trying to date other eligible men after their husbands move in with each other.
#GraceandFrankie is a hoot. At the end of the day it’s about how you deal with the cards life gives you. It also shows you when two brave headstrong women get together and support each other it’s one helluva kick ass ride.
And most importantly, without too much melodrama I love how old age is identified and treated with nurture and care. At 70, you don’t kick up your boots. You start another party and bring the roof down. Go sock it to them babes.

At the peak of his career, Amitabh Bachchan yet again assented to act in a multistarrer yash chopra’s #Trishul. The story goes that during one of the trials of the rushes, the producers and directors weren’t too happy with the second half and were dismayed at the results. So a reshoot was ordered. And Trishul got a new look.
And how confident Amitabh Bachchan was. Despite the anti hero image in the film. He never cared where his name came in the credits either. In Trishul his name appeared in the credits fifth, much after Sanjeev kumar, shashi kapoor, Hema Malini. Would any other hero agree and accept this? But not amitabh. So self assured was he.
Trishul slayed the box office and in my estimation remains one of his most formidable performances. What a roster of stars. From Sanjeev kumar to sachin and from Hema Malini to poonam dhillon. All in one movie. Salim javed also instrumental in fashioning Amitji’s career into the angry young man, besides having faith in an actor despite his first few films flopping. Movie lore has it that javed akhtar was So impressed with amitji’s lacerating performances in flops like #raastekapathar and #parwana. He immediately recommended his name for Ramesh Sippy for #sholay, besides ofcourse introducing him to the biggest names of the time- #manmohandesai and #prakashmehra. The rest as they say is His-story.

Those were some our best times as film reporters ,the end of the nineties and the beginning of the millennium. @karanjohar’s #kabhikhushikabhiegham was another go to movie. For all it’s lachrymose melodrama, fun sequences. It was also my most personally visited sets thanks to srk. We absorbed fun filmmaking. Be it the shavaa shavaa song or the funny sequences between kareena and Hrithik, srk and kajol.
Looking back it all seems like a hoot but #K3G was your pick me up movie. The songs, the fashion and ofcourse the star cast. This was our full blown Bollywood masala movie. Amitabh Bachchan, srk and Hrithik roshan. Absolutely nothing got bigger than that.
Kajol’s first movie after her marriage I think, the new much in demand new age stars Hrithik and kareena, the vintage Jaya Bachchan and amitji and ofcourse at the peak of his prowess srk.
How Karan Johar got together such a formidable star cast and how we made our way every single schedule to filmistan studios is a part of our warm memories of growing up at the movies.
Those were the best of times. Pop cinema and melodrama at its screaming slanging over the top multistarrer best. We love.

In the rollicking @asha.bhosle number from #howrahbridge tunes by #opnayyar. Shakti Samantha directed his whodunit of sorts. It’s quite watchable if somewhat inconsistent in parts. #Ashokkumar being a thespian had worked with Madhubala in several films including the very famous #mahal and seen her grow as an artiste. Needless to add he was a bit perturbed when his younger brother decided to marry Madhubala in 1960. Rumour goes that Kishore kumar converted to Islam for the sake of the marriage. A decision staunchly opposed his parents. They refused to let them stay in their house. So Kishore and Madhubala started living on Carter road. But the salt and sea breeze wasn’t doing any good to her health and they returned to her father’s house and Kishore left. The distances widened as he was trying to make his career both as an actor and singer and would be away on long spells of shooting. While Madhubala withered away.
To be absolutely fair to Kishore he did fly her to london immediately after the wedding to get her operated but the doctors advised them against it. And despite all the speculation we never really know what goes on between a couple behind closed door. What we are left with are bitter sweet memories.
And while you are at it try and watch the Guru Dutt- Waheeda Rehman starter #12oclock. Another whodunit directed by dutt’s brother in law #pramodchakravorty. I recall the lovely Geeta Dutt- mohd rafi duet #tumjohuemerehumsafar from the film.

The studio gossip is that she had sought Nargis’ advice and the senior star had reportedly replied that she should marry #bharatbhushan as he was a widower. But #madhubala chose to marry her costar #kishorekumar who had been divorced from his first wife ruma guha thakurta.
The Madhubala Kishore alliance was fraught with complications and a minefield of bitter recriminations and ill feeling. Kishore’s parents refused to accept or acknowledge the wedding. Owing to her Rapidly deteriorating health, Kishore made Madhubala stay at her father place. She was barely 27 then. She lived for another 9 years after the wedding. The doctors had reportedly advised them against consummating the marriage as she had a very weak heart. Those days an open heart surgery was ruled out. I’ll health coupled with Kishore’s long absences had made the star angry and highly suspicious.
Imagine after a super hit like Mughal E Azam at the peak of your career being bed ridden. Producers queued up to sign her on, she completed half ticket around the same time. She even attempted to get back to the studios with a raj kapoor starred #chalaak but collapsed on the second or third day of shooting. The fan letters would keep pouring in but Madhubala made no appearances.
Soon she became frail and gaunt and some even say that even at home she would put full make up on because she didn’t want anyone to notice that she had become a pale shadow of former self.
Often the doctors would attend to her to drain out the excess fluid and blood that would collect as a result of her condition. Despite being drained out, she bathed by herself and ate in her room. She lived Thai existence for 9 long years. Finally at the young age of 36, she gave up the struggle.
As is custom, food came from dilip Kumar’s house for three days after her demise. The thespian is reported to have cancelled his shooting in chennai and visited her grave. Three years before Madhubala’s death he had married the very young and beautiful #sairabano. Movie lore has it that Madhubala was truly heartbroken with the way life had unfolded.

A najoomi(soothsayer) had predicted a short life for her but said she would achieve great heights. Seen seldom in public, madhubala’s stature grew. Not very popular with the press largely due to her autocratic father’s high handedness, Madhubala despite a few false starts was a hugely popular star. A foreign periodical has written a profile oh her saying the headline of which “The biggest star in the world does not live in Beverly Hills but bombay”.
Her beauty was legendary and co stars did whisper about her mercurial temper and moodiness. She would reportedly distract them by laughing continuously during important scenes for a take.
But #madhubala was special. While she was linked to heroes like Bharat bhushan, Premnath, Kishore kumar and even kamaal amrohi... the real big love of her life was Dilip Kumar.
After her marriage to Kishore kumar in 1960, she returned to her father’s house. During her last years she pined for her last love. Mughal E Azam was a testament to her undying love for Dilip Kumar and her acting prowess.
Hindi cinema has yet to see a more beautiful, talented and underrated actor. Her beauty, her sense of comic timing is unrivalled to date.

How do you separate the art from the artiste? When both fuse together to form a complete union. It’s the same with @kschithra. There are many great singers in the #Malayalam pantheon but she’s truly truly blessed. She can be a teenager’s first crush or she could be the yearning of a housewife with #nimishamsuvarnanimisham. Or it could a courtesan’s first bloom of love with #indupushapam or the wanton love amidst the moors in #nettilpoovulla or just love which is akin to devotion in #manjalprasadavum. Or the manic frenzy of a possessed dancer in #orumuraivandha
While she’s scaled many heights in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and several other languages, it’s malayalam cinema which saw her at her acme. And what amazes me is despite her dizzying success and popularity, she remains genuinely unfazed and grounded. No diva tantrums, no fuss no frills. Just pure talent.
When Chitra sings, she pours pain, passion and purity from the deepest recesses of her soul. It melds into the melody of the music director. In that sense she’s a changeling. Be it illayaraja or Rahman or the malayalam music directors like late MG Radhakrishnan, Sarath or even a bombay music composer like Ravi. She owns the song, she shapes it and gives it a new lilt, a new destiny. Scores of heroines have benefitted as much from chitra singing as they have benefitted from an accomplished dubbing artistes voice (anandavalli, Sreeja, kottayam Shantha or the incredible bhagyalakshmi).
Chitra chechi like KJ yesudas is not only the voice of kerala but also a part of our memory stream. Reminding us every moment of childhood, adolescence, middle age and more importantly she’s the voice that heals. The voice that sings at night and refuses to curse the darkness. The voice that tells you despite all the pain and hardships, life will be remembered for the smiles her voice brings to your soul. Happy birthday #chitrachechi

He could talk to you about an aching heart and he could sing to you the incessant demands of a materialistic world. His voice was your alcove. Far from the madding crowd. He was a saint, Sufi and lover. #Jagjitsingh was many things to many people who were hooked on to his voice. A chance listening to a long playing record amidst few adults huddled, smoking and nursing their stiff drinks. Conversations dangled in the air and then gradually was reduced to a whisper. When he hummed Tumko dekha toh yeh khayal.
The romance had just begun.
Not such a fan of his wife’s singing, I always preferred jagjit solo. Then in the late eighties or maybe early nineties he came out with an album called #sajdaa with the formidable #latamangeshkar. If you haven’t heard that teaming together, you’ve missed a gorgeous two hours of your life. There are so many solos so many unforgettable melodies.
Do check out his songs written by #Gulzar especially for the TV serial #mirzaghalib. And while you’re at it, also check out the series. It’s one of #naseeruddinShah’s finest works and so is the incredible #tanviazmi as his wife. But more of that later.
Jagjit Singh will drive you away from the madding crowd, his voice will banish the world into a rumour, he will explain to you gently the futility of chasing shadows. And he will heal you when you least expect him. Radio stations have love gurus and pop shrinks now. We found our chicken soup for the weary soul so many decades ago. Thank you for the music Jagjit singh. You can now sing to the angels too

A remake of the Danielle Steele novel #Thepromise, #yehwaadaraha didn’t do the numbers when released. But the music was massive hit. The title track, #mainetujhe #aisakabhihua #jeenekotoh #milgayiaaj #ishqmerabandagi. Pancham reserved his effervescent best for rose movies and #rameshbehl. Right from #thetrain #khelkhelmein #kasmevaade #basera #pukaar #jawaani. Even their indifferent films like #Apneapne #chorpemor #indrajeet had some sizzling numbers.
Coming back to #yehwaadaraha, the trite story was about rishi kapoor and poonam dhillon falling in love much against parental opposition. On their way to the marriage they meet with a terrible accident. Rishi loses his memory partially. And poonam undergoes a face surgery. Voila! She become tina Munim. Raakhee and Sarika add to the chickfest.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve seen this movie. It’s for the sheer guilty pleasure of hearing #rdburman’s music I’m guessing. And there is something strangely uplifting about seeing two heroine films with sappy endings and lots of crying. And hey whaddya know? Both heroines voices were dubbed by the fabulous #jayabachchan. Which is a good thing really. Can you imagine the gravitas these two pretty faces must have got.

One indifferent film after another followed #Johnnyiloveyou #bekaraar #zameenaasmaan #merafaisla #dodilonkodastaan #mainawaarahoon #vidhaata #streetsinger. Everyone lapped up his bad boy stories and as his life got messier and luckier, the press loved him. Till he went and cleaned up his act and came back with #naam and #jaankibaazi.
The Sanjay Dutt story is as much as the prince of darkness story as much as the devil’s luck. Every single personal adversity is buffered by professional success. Every setback eased up with adulation and love. We all lap up a hard luck story don’t we? As in life as in the movies.

The film slalomed #kumargaurav aka Bunty to stardom. #lovestory was his biggest milestone and millstone. Milestone because every debutant would compare in the future to Gaurav. Millstone because nothing Gaurav did would match upto the spectacular success of his debut film. Gaurav a good actor did scores of indifferent films with great music. He was wonderful in films like #Naam #Janam. Gaurav was heralded as the next big thing but nothing came much of it.
#RahulRawail directed Love story but the very obsessive and domineering #Rajendrakumar had differences of opinion with Rawail and didn’t credit him for the love story. Love story also was not a happy story for debutant #VijetaPandit who sank into oblivion. She let her heart rule her head. It made big news when gaurav broke up his engagement with raj kapoor’s younger daughter and took up with pandit.
Love story was notable for its mellifluous music by #Rdburman and some lovely Lata Mangeshkar and Amit kumar songs. One notable @bhosle.asha song made all the right noise for its jazzy moves and sensuous. The previous year Gaurav’s yet to be brother in law #sanjaydutt had made his debut in rocky. The film sank but the music like love story is hummed to date. A couple of years later jackie shroff, Anil kapoor and sunny deol too made their big screen splashes. The only downside: everytime a newcomer who’s done superbly, fails he’s then unfavourably compared to #kumargaurav

But he captured the zeitgeist of the changing 90s. They were early times and he was in the fecund stage of his life.
Still painfully shy and musically precocious, I remember meeting @arrahman at his chennai studio in the early 90s.
In this clip he’s composing for a somewhat underwhelming film called #pudhiyamugam. Actress Revathi’s husband Suresh was the hero of the film. It’s still remembered for its luminescent music by Rahman including #netruillatamatam and #kannukameiazhaga. Here another favourite singer of mine #sujata chechi goes at it oozing honey from her vocals. Rahman melds the supple voice to his resplendent composition. It’s a beauty. Simpler times, simpler people. When only real talent mattered
