I remember before I started McGowan Fitness, I sat down with myself and had a long talk. A very VERY real ass talk. Ya know one of those talks that if someone actually heard you, they would think you’re clinically insane. I didn’t like where I was at, and I damn sure didn’t like people telling me the classic “You can’t do that” line. I was broke, living in my moms house fresh from college, depressed, and had NO idea what my next step should be.

So, which is actually more beneficial for you? A cheat meal or a re-feed? That answer depends largely on your current situation!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have used both methods with clients and myself when dieting. With that said, I - without a doubt - prefer structured re-feeds over cheat meals because it allows for far more precise macro management. If you read my post awhile back, you are aware of the importance of knowing your caloric consumption. The whole premise of a high carb re-feed day is to:
⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ Give a diet break (satisfy cravings)
✅ Help prevent fat loss plateau
✅ Increase energy
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On a re-feed the whole objective is to raise calories above your maintenance level in order to trick your body into feeling like it is being fed again. This raises your leptin hormone, amongst other things, and basically nullifies your fat-loss plateau. In every fat-loss program I write, I make sure to incorporate a calculated re-feed for my clients to be used every two weeks at the start. We then move toward once a week as they get lower in body fat. The lower your body fat, the harder it is to make your body lose more weight. Re-feeds are key at this point. Now mind you, you can fill your macros with anything you want to eat if you are following an IIFYM style of diet. So your re-feed, as calculated as it is, can be a “cheat” as well.

A cheat meal allows for a diet break to enjoy food that normally can’t fit into your macro range. Unlike a calculated re-feed, a cheat meal is usually high in both carbs and fat. Much higher in the fat category. This is commonly used for people who have been following a solid diet to a T and seeing great results. After a while, a cheat meal can be used to allow them sanity and as a reward for the hard work and consistency.

I love nothing more than housing burgers and pizza like it’s my day job, but a more calculated approach will yield better results. That doesn’t mean you can’t use cheat meals at all however! Which do you prefer?

The simple answer... No, no you can’t.

We all hold fat differently, some hold in their upper body, some in their midsection, and some hold more fat in their legs. The place you hold fat is largely due to your personal genetic makeup. If you lose a lot of fat and gain it back, the place you hold fat CAN and will change (I have personally learned this the hard way from competing for the last 5 years).

But, there are a few things you CAN do to drop overall body fat which will, in time, trim those trouble areas!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
💪 Strength training - Hands down one of the best methods to lose fat. Building muscle puts the body in ab anabolic state. The more muscle you have the more fat you will burn. 🙋‍♀️ Ladies, you will never ever look like a man - so no worries. Put on some muscle and watch your body transform 💁‍♀️.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🏃 HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) - A great tool to burn more fat in the least amount of time. It's an intense burst of exercise followed by a steady recovery period. HIIT burns fat for up to 24hrs after you are finished due to the intensity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍐 Adhere to a caloric restriction - no matter what style of diet you choose to follow. Make sure it is something you can adhere to long term. Consistency is the biggest key. This is why I love flexible dieting so much! It isn’t hard to follow and allows room for enjoyment without the guilt. KEEP THAT CALORIC RESTRICTION!

I have had the honor of working with a wide range of people and one of the most common reasons why some don’t ever reach the goal they want, is because they are not willing to make the change. Look I get it, I was a product of a single mom who sacrificed so much for my brother and I to eat. I know how hard it can be to shuttle kids all over the place and barely have time for yourself.

I have also had the honor of working with some of the busiest people I have ever met personally. Two full-time job working, child caring, home improving, business meeting individuals that actually had REAL excuses. Hell I have had even competitors that worked a 6am-6pm, had kids to take to practice for 2 hrs, and still managed to make a full on competition prep work for them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What did they do differently than the ones that don’t succeed?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They didn’t say what MORE they could put into their life and pack it even further. They looked at what they could take out that would free up space for their goals.

Things like:

✔️ Limiting Netflix and using that time to workout.
✔️ Going to the gym while their kids where at soccer practice.
✔️ Focusing on better time management.
✔️Understanding that they matter.

You see change is all around us, it is up to us to either welcome the change or push it away and stay complacent. Nothing wrong with complacency….Unless you are unhappy with where you are. I know it’s hard, I know you are lost, and I know I can help.

Let’s get this straight, and before you jump in my inbox with your opinion please take the time to read EVERYTHING I say. There isn’t and will never be a *good* food and a *bad* food, there is however “calorie dense” foods and “nutrient dense foods.” Ultimately, when it comes to fat-loss, calories are king. Yes I said it, the food you put into your mouth is irrelevant as long as you can account for it.

🧟‍♀️“NOO PROCESSED FOODS WITH CHEMICALS ARE BAD!”

Actually, I hate to break it to you, but there are VERY few things that are not genetically modified, sprayed with pesticides, or handled with the utmost perfection. Hell, even the soil we plant in is modified! Fruits and vegetables are made to grow larger, animals are made to be bigger. So, unless you are growing your own special tomato seeds you got from the 1800’s in soil that has not been processed by humans, then your food is - in essence - processed, just a different type of process.

👉 AND ON TOP OF THAT… ALL FOODS ARE CHEMICALS!

Every single thing breaks down and is made up of chemicals.

The notion that if I take a slice of bread, a tomato, and some cheese - put it in the oven and bake it - and call it pizza - that all of a sudden it’s “bad food” is a little ridiculous.

My recommendation…

✅ Get a variety of foods in your diet.
✅ Leave room for enjoyment.
✅ Get in your fiber - 12-15g per 1000 calories.
✅ Eat meals with a full macro range.
✅ Count your macro’s.

🎪 If you have cake 🎂 at your little niece’s birthday party, account for it and take out the carbs you would have eaten later. Don’t feel bad about yourself for a the rest of the day and end up binge eating because you lived life. We are human, things are going to happen. Stop the guilt.

What you see here is called cupping. It encourages blood flow, relieves pain, and can loosen up the muscles. Once they are on, I hardly even noticed them there. I was more focused on the pain from the Graston Technique taking place! (If you want to see that, look at my story.)

For the past 12 weeks I have challenged myself to start eating better and getting in the routine of going to the gym 6 days a week (with minimal cardio might I add 😉). Excited to say the challenge is done ✅ .

Honestly, at one point I seriously was looking for an excuse to not go to the gym or to do anything for that matter. But I did, and I’m glad I did. I didn’t go as heavy as I normally do, but this felt good for 4x10.

How many times have you said that to yourself? I personally can’t count how many times I have said it to myself. After my grandfather passed away I was in a deep depression - my crutch was food and video games. I would drown out my entire day eating every single thing I could and then go get lost in gaming for hours. It was so bad… I would down a dozen donuts 🍩 like it was my job. It was to the point to where I was almost 250lbs. Not a healthy 250 - this was a struggle to tie my shoes, knees hurting, can’t look at the mirror - 250. I tried every single motivational thing I knew to try to get my ass up and moving.

“Today is the day…” is what I told myself day after day. Until one day I DECIDED to take the steps I needed to take.
⠀⠀
I set out a goal of competing in a show 18 weeks out. I set up parameters to what I needed to be accomplish by the half way point. I made a strategy and took all of the thinking out of it.
⠀⠀⠀
🔑 Key part…. TOOK MY THINKING OUT OF IT 🔑
⠀⠀⠀
I was in a very negative state of mind… I didn’t want to do anything, but I knew that if I put positivity back into my life and took my thinking out of the actions needed it would be okay. I had done this thousands of times with my clients to get some amazing transformations that will last their entire lives. I started reading more, and listening to positive messages.
⠀⠀
The mind is an amazing thing, but at the end of the day the mind only wants us to be safe and not to travel outside of our comfort zone. By giving no room to negative thinking and devising a solid strategy, we can accomplish anything!
⠀⠀⠀
So, how should you set up your strategy for accomplishing your goals? Don’t over-complicate it. I am 100% sure you have done this in other areas of your life. You just need to understand that the strategizing is the same, you just need to move it to a new area! Pick the outcome and work backwards from that. Set yourself some small goals along the way and give a time frame to them. A wise man once said, “a goal without a deadline is just a dream.”

THERE IS NO MAGIC DIET!

When it comes to fat loss… it boils down to what you can stay consistent with! This is why I believe KETO is by far one of the worst diets to put anyone on for fat loss. You can lose just as much weight on a conventional diet, if you are able to stick to it, as you can on a keto diet. The reason why most lead you to believe it’s better is because if you cut out a whole macro group, you WILL eat less and in turn lose weight. And losing weight is what we want right?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well… here is where it gets a bit tricky, and partially why I have seen keto make more people FAT than any other diet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I am sure you know someone that has went on a keto diet to lose weight. Lost some weight and after they came off the diet for a month or two, GAINED IT ALL BACK AND MORE! Why? Because it is not sustainable for their lifestyle. To make a dive into a strict diet like that you have to be able to abide by the rules long term. I have seen so many women lose weight on a keto diet, and put far more weight back on when all is said and done. This is why I am not an advocate of that form of dieting as it has hurt more people then helped.

Instead, I suggest learning your body. eating to a conventional diet that you CAN stay consistent with long term. Consistency is the king here. Find something you can do and stick with it. Any diet will work if you are willing to work. Never place yourself under harsh parameters that you know you will never be able to stick to. Plus, who doesn’t like 🎂cake🎂 and 🍦ice-cream🍦🤗

We as humans, by nature, like to take the easy way out of every situation. It is literally ingrained in us to do so.  So, when it comes to the subject of reaching our goals, if we allow for the things that we need to do to push towards our goal to become an option, we will eventually give in to an easier option.  Here is a simple example of this: if you allow going to the gym today to be viewed as an option instead of a rule, your subconscious self may convince you to just skip it.

This is exactly what a reverse diet can do for you! When I first talked to @yaysammayy she was eating about 1200 calories daily and, like many women, tried her best to stay away from carbs at all costs. If you have ever been in this spot, you already know how draining and hard it can be to be hungry and tired all day and not lose weight.

After I broke it down into some sciency, yes I said sciency, stuff and I explained that if she was that low in calories and not losing weight, her metabolism is fighting against her and not for her.  You see, the body does not care that we want to lose weight or gain weight.  What our body cares about is maintaining homeostasis and being able to function to the degree it needs to for survival.  Survival IS the most important thing for the body. Everything else, even sex drive, is second hand to it.

We raised her calories and she has put on some serious nice, lean muscle and has lost fat along the way! Now, this was not an overnight quick fix! We had to gradually raise the calories and allow her body to transition out of starvation and into thriving!💥 I want to preface this by saying that she also stayed very consistent with her workouts and busted her ass in the gym every time she stepped into it.  Don’t for a second think these results she got didn’t come with some hard consistent work!💥

The reason why this is directed at ladies is because of our stigma on fat-loss for women in our society.  It is easy to fall into this "eat-nothing" hole and actually put on more fat.  If you throw your metabolism in the dirt (and then binge eat every weekend because you are starving) fat WILL pile on!
