Today was spent making this cowgirl number from scratch!
I found a large pleather skirt in an op shop and recycled the material. I used an existing top as a pattern for the deep v shape, snipped my own fringing and decided to use wide elastic on the back since the pleather doesn't have much stretch and would've been a massive pain to get the fit perfect for a zip as I don't yet have a mannequin in my size.
It's entirely hand stitched because I've not yet got a sewing machine, so it took me about seven hours to make... Now all I need is double sided tape to keep my boobs in and a honky tonk night to wear it out. Yeehaa!

It's one of the biggest things I miss when I'm traveling - the chance to get up in the air and monkey around. I've found a few training places whilst I've been away, but I've either not been there on the right day / not had enough time / just plain been lazy.
The last time I trained hard was April 2017 because I was getting my fitness levels up to do a trek in Nepal. So right now my strength levels are shocking. Like, actually terrible. However, I've been exercising and / or stretching daily since I've been here in SD and definitely feel better for it, even though I always have an ache somewhere in my body.

And I'm always looking at pictures of my friends on here doing aerial like oh man I miss that / wanna try that. Definitely a hard sacrifice to make for me when traveling. Keep inspiring me please my aerial friends, I need to get this butt back in shape!

Life in San Diego is sweet. It's only been a week and I'm already dreading having to leave.
Sure, there's a lot of crazies. Sure, there's pee smell hanging around in corners. I even saw a pile of barf on the street today. But there's just something so magical about this city.
Living in an amazing hostel, seeing blue skies everyday, rooftop pools, beaches, dancing, Mexican food and right now I'm on my way to an aerial centre to train for the first time in ages.
Life is just lovely ✌

One of my favourite things about San Diego is that it borders Mexico... So Mexican food is in abundance and so delicious!
Things I am happy about so far:
☑ Not being bitten by ants or mosquitos. ☑ Thick, comfy mattresses. ☑ Beautiful beautiful sunny days. ☑ A big hostel kitchen to cook in. ☑ The free breakfasts including bagels and cream cheese. ☑ Rooftop pools, fully sneak into-able. ☑ Flushing toilet paper. ☑ Being with wonderful people in an amazing hostel.
Things I am less happy about:
❌Western prices. ❌Less selection of fruits. ❌No more poopy bum squirters. ❌Expensive mail.
Did you know to send a letter internationally from the US with regular mail it's $14. FOURTEEN DOLLARS. Not even with a signature. What a joke!

I saw the bright lights of Denny's from the bus window. The spacing between armrests on the benches is wiiiide (not quite enough for two, but defo room for more than one). And it's so quiet.
No crazy loud music on buses, no crazy honking. And so clean.
Think I've got a bit of culture shock 😅

And I got to spend yesterday evening jamming with @franzward14 in one of my favourite hostels so life is wonderful. I'm so lucky.
This means, my San Diego sweethearts, I am back in town and available for appointments such as volleyball, frisbee, acro/aerial, partying and chilling. Let's catch up ✌

Similar vibe to India, but definitely more chill. There's still harassment from tuktuk drivers, but it's only half as bad. There's still lots of honking, but slightly less bad. There's still creepers, but not as many.
It's harder to plan getting around though, given the lack of online booking or schedule info for the buses and trains. You've gotta check at the station or find a hostel with staff that can advise you most of the time. Or just wing it. I did and it all worked out. The locals will all help you get on the right bus!
I was kinda disappointed with the food... But I discovered kottu is pretty nice - it's shredded roti breads fried with veggies / meat if you want. But still, I didn't find the curries very good. As a lover of curries, it was a let down.
Being bored with the same old 'you from?' on buses, I developed an alias. To random inescapable strangers (ie, those sat next to me on buses) I am Ana from Slovakia. I remained Ana for much of my trip. Her English wasn't always great and she definitely didn't have facebook.
Had an awkward moment with one old man who asked me who the Slovakian prime minister was. I just said I don't know, I don't like politics 😂
And then randomly just a day ago there was an actual Slovakian girl staying at my hostel. I still don't know who the PM is though.
Sri Lanka does have some very beautiful scenery. I stayed in some very nice places and had a good time, but I didn't fall in love with this country.
Now I'm leaving Asia for a while... Back to the western world where I can flush my toilet paper 🤗
And back to a country I most certainly fell in love with. This will be my fifth visit to the USA in ten years 🙌

These photos are from Galle Fort, which was built by the Dutch and I explored it with two Dutch guys. There are SO many Dutch people traveling Sri Lanka! But that's nice, cause they're nice.

I didn't know that was a thing, but since it is a thing I'll show you something.
This is my Yorkshire rose mandala.
I get asked alllllll the time about my tattoos and if they have meaning. So here's the reasoning behind this one:

Before I moved to Leeds I was much different to the girl I am now. I was incredibly shy, unconfident, uncool, overall unsure of myself. But during my Leeds years (18-27) I became confident, cool (yeah?) and mostly sure of myself. Well, I became myself. The self that I wanted to be, but as a kid wouldn't have believed it could be.
Music, dancing, fire, circus, my own businesses, solo traveller!
Before the age of 20 I'd never even dare ask a shop assistant where a product I couldn't find was. But my years and experiences growing into true adulthood in Leeds have left me quite different.
Yorkshire, I feel I have outgrown you now, but I still love you. Sheffield, where I got my first trapeze lesson. Ilkley, where I've spent many beautiful days out walking. Leeds, where I established my independent life (and where I got my first tattoo). A mandala is a representation of the universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism, the two religions I connect most with.
So, in short, when asked what this piece means, I say:
It is the Yorkshire heart within my universe. [ tattoo by @doublefullstop ]

The video is of your standard bus in Sri Lanka - they're jazzy and loud and have craaaazy drivers.
This bus took 4.5 hours from Mount Lavinia (bit south of Colombo) to Mirissa (south coast beach town). 4.5 hours of sliding around, abrupt braking nearly leaving my face in the seat in front, and sweating my bumhole off. The buses here are pretty easy to work out though, just gotta ask ticketman if they're going to wherever before you get on, then on you get in hopes of bagging a seat, he'll come and sell you a ticket once the bus is going.

Getting off is less easy. Usually the buses are so packed out that you have to battle through the aisle, made even more of a challenge with the addition of a backpack + guitar. So after seeing that the next stop is yours (map app is the only way - there's no info screens telling you where you are, and on busy buses ticketman will not remember to tell you it's your stop) you'll have to barge & almost sit on a stranger's lap when the bus brakes suddenly on your way to the front. And if you've been in the window seat, best as it is for the breeze, you'll also have to climb over the person in the aisle seat as it is not customary for them to move. The best they'll do is try sit back in the seat to allow a small gap between the seat in front & their knees. I still get a little anxious whenever my stop is nearing, unwilling to tackle the obstacle course, yet knowing I have no choice.
There's switches on the ceiling to press when you wanna stop, or you wave to ticketman. Once you reach the door you'll have about 2 secs to jump off before the bus starts again. It's a similar procedure for getting on at anything other than a bus station; as soon as your last foot has left the ground the driver will pull away at top speed and you'll wobble down the aisle, clinging to the seats & overhead rail.
And if you've got a seat and the bus is full, a stander might just plonk their bag/child on your knee. It's normal - personal space is not a thing. I've not had this happen to me yet, perhaps this is because I look dirty & Satanic, like I might slip something out of your bag/posses your child. I'm okay with this.

After the ever so long train ride I arrived in this place, nestled in the hills and surrounded by so much green! Everywhere was palm trees and tea plantations. I didn't do much with my first day, as after bumping around on that rocky ride left me wanting to stay still for a while. But I did go out for dinner with a few people from the hostel.
This place is just BUILT for tourists! The main road is lined with restaurants and they were all jam packed. Which could've been horrible but honestly, it's beautifully done - they're all lit up with fairy lights and things. Had there been a few Christmas trees I'd have thought it were December. And I love Christmas!
After dinner we went to a bar. It's seems every tourist place has a reggae bar, and that's where we wound up. I don't understand how drug laws can be so tight, yet it's so obvious that you can buy weed in all these reggae bars. I don't think I've been to one ANYWHERE where I wasn't offered to smoke. I'm always like I know I have dreads but er, I don't smoke. Cool points down to zero ⬇️ 🤓

But the next day i set off on a walk to a tea factory.
Now, what I don't get is that people come to Ella mostly for hiking. BUT they'll get a bus / tuktuk to the 'beginning' of the trail. Thing is, it's all beautiful here! Why not add that extra couple miles to the hike? The little man in the hostel seemed surprised I was willing to walk to the factory, but it was just a little over an hour away.
Dunno how it differs to doing an official hike route but whatever. So I went. It was lovely. And at the factory, the view was wonderful! And I could've absolutely lined my bag with tea, if only I had space. So many delicious smelling options. There was even a mint chocolate flavor and I was sorely tempted... After this trip I headed back to the hostel via a veg stall (four avocados for less than 50p 😍). Lucky for me, it had rained a tiny bit on my walk, but as soon as I got into the hostel it came CRASHING down. Kinda ruined my plans to go on another walk for sunset but oh well.
I 100% recommend this place to nature lovers 🌲🌱🌴 #ella #srilanka #whereloocigoes #nature #backpacking #travel

The railway from Kandy - Ella.

It is noted as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. So of course, it was CRAMMED. Packed to the rafters with backpackers.
Reserved seats are sold out weeks in advance, but you can rock up to the station in the morning and they'll sell as many unreserved tickets as they can. Then it's a game of guessing where the door will stop and scrambling like rats to find a seat. I'm not really an aggressive rat, so I opted to get on the train last so I could at least be stood by the door. Because, inevitably, standing I would be.
ADVICE: If you're unreserved, go for 3rd class. Getting a seat in 2nd was hopeless, but I heard from another traveler she went in 3rd and eventually got a seat.
So I was in standing for the 6.5 hour journey.
Well, except my being in the doorway allowed me to perch with my legs dangling for a few hours. Glorious hours they were! Beautiful views, sunshine, tall grass whipping at my feet. Until it started raining and I retreated as much as possible into the carriage when immediately a Chinese group scrambled into the doorway for a makeshift photoshoot, no cares for my poor little feet, which got quite trampled in the process.
So I spent a few hours actually stood.
ADVICE: Book accommodation well in advance and ask them to reserve tickets for you. Or buy tickets as soon as you get to Colombo and do it as the last part of your trip (if you're there for three or more weeks). OR
I heard from a couple that they went to a fancy hotel's tour agency and managed to get touted reserved seats just a few days in advance. Cost was $15 a ticket, which is quite a markup on the actual $1.50 price tag. But for a last minute seat on such a renowned ride, and by western standards, that's not bad at all!

Was it worth it?
If I hadn't have had those few foot dangling hours, I'd have said no. With a reserved seat, yes. I got the bus on the return and it was quicker, more comfortable and still had beautiful views.
LAST ADVICE: Take food. The men doing the rounds were way overpriced!

So I've traveled up to Anuradhapura. I heard it was this ancient city, sounded alright for a night. Temples and that.
Upon my arrival I was super tired because the bus ride was so so crammed - my video is quite terrible but that was me squeezed in, backpack under the seat and guitar on my lap, people standing in the aisle full for the whole few hours it took. Not being able to stick my head out of the window for fresh air made it so hot... And it was hard to keep my eyes open most of the time. Glad they were open when we had to overtake that elephant though 😅

Anyways. Since I planned to leave Ana the next day i figured I'd make the most of the day and force myself out to a temple. 45 min walk says google. I must've been walking in slow motion or something cause it was defo longer than that! But anyways, I get there, it's kinda nice. A monk was giving blessings for protection, so it made me smile to recieve one. 🙏
But I am POOPED. And I've got all the way to walk back. Was even considering paying for a tuktuk... Tuktuk man pulls up and I do my alas, I am a poor girl on a budget thing and he offers me a free ride. Great! Another generous citizen!
But not one minute into the ride and he turns to me... 'You're very sexy'
🙄😷 Er, thanks. ...
'1000 rupees one hour'
I'm sorry, what? I thought you said this ride was free? 'No, I pay you 1000 for one hour'
Oh. I'm not a prostitute. ...
'Tonight?'
No, I'm not a prostitute. 'Tomorrow morning?'
NO! ...
'But you are very sexy'
I'm married. 'So am i'
Then you should love your wife! In Europe we marry for love and don't sleep with other people! 🙇
Now, most people would've jumped right out of the tuktuk by now. But he was driving in the right direction and I was tired, plus if he is going to insult me like this I was getting that free ride! I mean, 1000 rupees, are you having a laugh?! That's less than a fiver 😂😂😂😂 as if him assuming I'd be game for whoring myself out in the first place wasn't bad enough by itself, jeeez louise.
Oh, and there's a pic of the mozzie bites I got in Sigiriya. Fun!

This day i decided to head into Sigiriya itself (my hostel being 6 miles from it) and not knowing when the bus might pass, I opt for walking. I'm in a good mood, sun is shining, so when I get a tuktuk do the usual 'hey hey you miss hey where going' thing I give more than my usual no thank you. I tell him that, alas, I have only 70 rupees for the bus and though I wish I could afford 400 for his tuktuk, I cannot. He tells me he is driving there anyway, so it's okay. Are you sure?! Yes. Okay! What's more, we get there and I go to give him my 70 and he tells me not to worry. 🤗

I walk on a couple km from the main rock to a cheaper rock which I plan to climb (cheap rock is 500 compared to 2500 for the main one!) and another tuktuk driver asks if I need a ride. I tell him it's okay, it's not so far and I need to save my money for the bus back to the hostel. He says it's okay, I'll take you for free. Well, okay then! ⬇️
So I get to cheap rock and have a nice old climb and nearly get blown right off at the top (too much wind for open eyes in the pic) but it's pretty glorious. I don't think the other rock could've been 5x better to make it worth the price. ⬇️
I come down, start my walk back. A postman offers me a lift to the other rock on the back of his scooter. Well, okay! 🏍
He drops me where the bus stops but a local tells me it's not due for 35 mins, so I start walking. Not long after, another tuktuk stops. I'm getting good at this damsel in cheapo distress act by now (I mean, the lack of money thing is legit but I add a layer of overacted sadness to my voice, ha) and somehow I'm in another tuktuk with the promise of a free ride.
This one didn't exactly come free though, I had to give him my whatsapp and let him take a selfie of us. I'm probably his new girlfriend now according to facebook, but he takes me right to the hostel. I spent most of the ride telling him about my wonderful (fabricated) fiance but it didn't put him off.
🙄🙄🙄
This day of kind humans saved me a max of 800 rupees (on tuktuks) /a min of 70 (on buses) and that might just be £3.81 - 33p, but you know what, I'm so grateful!

Budget travel is... ➡️Choosing the 2.5 hour slow bus instead of the 1.5 hour express as it's £1 cheaper. ➡️Walking 10 minutes to buy a bottle of water so it's 10p cheaper than the hostel. ➡️Choosing to walk six miles because the tuktuk would set you back £2.

Further to that last point, I've caught the cheap bus from Kandy to Dambulla and I gotta change buses to get me closer to Sigiriya, which is a place famous for a big religious rock. Figured why not give it a little visit.
Problem is, I arrive and don't know when the next bus to Sigiriya is! They run hourly and I don't have a clue when it'll show. So I pop into a cafe and do my usual order veg whatever. It's a curry and rice and it's quite terrible (Sri Lankan food isn't great) and when she brings the bill it's 300 rupees, about £1.50. This may not sound a lot but since I'm pretty much Asian now I'm like THAT'S SO EXPENSIVE 😱. I've seen veg curry and rice advertised all over at less than 200 you see. My hostel for the night wasn't gonna be cheap either and so I'm on a bit of a MUST SAVE MONEY rampage.
I decide, screw it, it's only a 1.5 hour walk away. ☀
After 30 hot, dusty, sweaty, full of 'no, thank you' to the tuktuk men minutes, I'm feeling a little miserable. My bag is feeling heavy and there's not much of a view distracting me from it, only a road. I think about resting and waiting to see if the bus comes but NO, I AM STRONG MONEY SAVING FEMALE. I think the word stubborn belongs in there too. I'm also convincing myself this is good exercise, burn those curry calories.
But oh, what a relief when an angel in the form of a Sri Lankan lady stops her car and asks if I need help. She takes me not only to the junction where I'd turn for the hostel, but right to the door. I'm so happy, I'm like PEOPLE ARE GOOD THE WORLD IS GOOD. I didn't even have the thumb out. Sri Lanka wins a point 🙏

I don't know how I get so lucky sometimes 🌟
And the hostel, oh! What a treat! Feeling ever so Swiss Family Robinson with this open air jungle dorm surrounded by trees and green green rice fields. Plus it's full of legit backpackers 🤗

Also I believe the poo face incident was in fact the work of a monkey, given how many I came across on my walk down to the town. Assuming monkeys do liquid poo, I dunno, I always thought it was solid enough to throw. But maybe here they have too much spicy local food.
And here's more cute creatures. Because who doesn't love an animal post?
So I moved from the hostel on the hill to a hostel in the town. If you're seeing this on facebook you'll have probably seen my frustrated 'this bed has bedbugs' post because uh, yeah... It did. Second bed I moved to for night two was okay but who knows, maybe I brought some into that room on my bag. If I were the owner I'd have been like WASH EVERYTHING and offered me free use of the machine. But oh well, he gave me a free night's stay.
BEDBUGS ARE THE WORST AND I WANT THEM ALL TO DIE.
Though right now my bigger issue is I'm in a hostel in the jungle and mosquitoes have eaten me alive. More on that plus pictures tomorrow... #whereloocigoes #travel #backpacking #monkeys #srilanka #chipmunk #prettybird #kandy

A beautiful view from my hostel here in Kandy, but my time has been somewhat marred... It started off okay. Got the train from Colombo, for which I'd reserved my own seat. Seat next to me was empty too! I snoozed a bit and when I woke it was to some stunning scenery outside, as per the video clip. 🌲

Upon my arrival I started walking to the hostel.
Well, maybe this is dumb given that it's a hill town but I was not expecting so much uphillness 😅
After 25 sweaty ass, backpack plus guitar carrying minutes, a boy on a scooter stopped and asked if I was going to chill capital hostel. Why yes, yes I am. Turns out it's his place and I gladly jump on the back for the rest of the ride. Woo!
I get there, there's a cat, yay! The cat is anti social. Lame.
But they have a dog! Yay!
After attempting to cuddle the dog, it bites my face. MY FACE. MY ACTUAL FACE. I've got a nice bruise coming along around my eye, plus a tooth hole which may or may not add an extra scar to my already scarred face.
Moral of the story: don't put your face too close to the face of a dog you don't know. NO MATTER HOW FLUFFY.
Wonder if I'll learn my lesson🤔

I get ready for bed, drop toothpaste on my top.
I sleep. Wake. Go off exploring. Get what I think is a lovely picture of the lake and later return to the hostel to notice my big fat thumb in the way. Awesome skills, Looci. Also, whilst I'm at the lake there's some big creatures. I think they were caiman cause they looked like those things they wrestled on Bear Grylls: The Island. They were cool. I even stopped to take a second look when a bird pooped on me.
Only, it wasn't just any bird poop. It was a giant load of green-brown slime from I assume something closer to a pterodactyl, or maybe it was a monkey, I dunno. Not your standard pigeon crap.
And where did it land? MY ACTUAL FACE. From forehead to chin, on my top and even on my leggings. Fantastic. Is this the universe trying to tell me something?
I wipe it off on a bit of clean shirt, go to wash my hands in the lake, nearly lose a flip flop in the mud and look like a right troll trying to pull myself up the bank.
Fun times.

I'm staying in a beach town a little south of Colombo called Mount Lavinia. The tuktuks only harass you a bit, though the locals think I'm Bob Marley and keep trying to sell me weed.
.

On the bus from the airport, the conductor insisted I sit at the front ie right next to him. And I was sweating my ass off wearing a jumper, so I took it off. I shouldn't have, cause under was a vest and he proceeded to poke all my tattoos, including going for the chest - to which I slapped his hand away and said NOT MY BOOBIES.
He also grabbed my foot to move it to a 'more comfortable place'. No no no no. It was 2am in my previous timezone but I couldn't sleep cause I thought he might try see where my other tattoos hide...

But otherwise, I had a nice day yesterday including a sunset from this rock temple 🤗

Cause I've got no other photos to post. 🇮🇲➡️🇲🇾 I wish I could say I'm sad to be leaving, but I'm not. 🐟
I've liked places here, I've hated places here.
I've liked people here, I've been utterly infuriated by people here.
I've been awed by beauty, I've been repulsed by disgustingness.
I've had fun journeys, I've had sweaty sat next to a man who defo just had a poo journeys.
I've loved food here, I've crapped out mass amounts of liquid here. ✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️
So it's really a half half place. If I'd had cash to splash to always pick the best hostels, jump in tuktuks everywhere without a care if they rip me off and choose 1st class in the trains, I'm sure I'd have loved it all. Well, not sure since I'd probably still have spotted some disgusting willies flopping out in the street, but it would've been better. Possibly. .
But from my personal experience, I'm not in any hurry to come back. Most Indian people have infuriated me and I'm not generally an angry girl. I always say it's the people that make the place so it's a big deal to me. It's a shame because some of them are actually cool people. A slim percentage. .
.
I'm very glad I came because it was always a dream for me, plus so many people warned me against coming here solo so of course I had to do it just to prove I could! Ha.
As a solo female I definitely got more unwanted attention (though the tuktuk drivers chase anyone and everyone) than when I traveled a couple weeks with a guy, but if you're strong and/or fairly experienced with travel, you'll be fine. Honestly, you wanna go to India? Crack on. It's an experience. A stinky one. Hahaha. 🔚

The Taj Mahal!
So finally, as my last thing on the list for India, I've made it to one of the wonders of the world.
I've gotta say, it was beautiful. I felt quite moved that someone could posses a love so great that they would build such a monument as their tomb. If only we could all hope to achieve such a deep and fierce love in our lives!
It for sure was my favourite building I've visited here. So of course my India token tattoo (when I'm earning money again...) is gonna have to be a tiny Taj. It has to be.
Something that annoyed me though (there's always something 😅) was how dirty the fountains were! As if they don't make enough money to clean them, jeez. Lazy. When everything else is so beautiful.
Speaking of making money, I was bummed out a bit when I got to the ticket booth to see it was 1000 rupees to enter... The price for Indians is just 40 or something... But it was really something I had to see, so I had no choice but to cough up. So that meant extra budgeting on food - I had some bread and dip left over from a couple days ago for lunch, then bought pani puri (which is like these crispy hollow balls filled with a little veg and spicy water) which was 30 rupees for eight pieces, then three mangos for 20 rupees. Nice cheap dinner. Similar will probably happen today so I'm balanced on my budget again!

When you're traveling like this you've gotta make a lot of sacrifices along the way and be prepared to restrict your treats. But honestly the pani puri was so delicious so it was no problem for me. Indian street food 👌👌👌 I quite like Agra. So much so I've decided not to stay in Delhi, just head straight to the airport from here. Can't be bothered going (potentially) to a place I won't really enjoy when I could stay where I am having a nice time. Because I fly out TOMORROW!
Kuala Lumpur, I'm coming back for a week 💛💛💛 #travel #backpacking #whereloocigoes #thetajmahal #tajmahal #agra #india #aladdin

This majestic fort in Agra was a sight to behold! But the entrance fee was too high for my budget so I just admired it from the outside. It cost 500 rupees, which is about £5.50, for foreign tourists and only 30 rupees for Indians. My daily budget is 900 rupees and my hostel cost me 400 so I decided I'd rather eat than go inside. Things like this are usually more impressive from the outside anyway.
I understand the idea of charging foreigners more, the vast majority of us are away with cash to splash and earn higher, but as I told a tour guide trying his best to convince me to buy a ticket - I'm not on holiday.
Also, I don't understand why they'd make a rubbish tip in its surrounding gardens. It is a shame. Perhaps they should use some of the entrance fee to employ people from the slum over the road to collect the rubbish, sort it for recycling / dispose of it properly, thus making it cleaner and giving the people a chance to earn a better life.
Anyways, I like Agra much more than Jaipur, but I had another tuktuk driver incident... Trying to charge us 1000 for driving us to a few different places. The day hire rate is generally around 600 (or 400 if you're alone) from about 10am - 5 30pm. We took him from about midday until 4 30pm and we told him he didn't have wait around whilst we went in a cafe for an hour, we'd call him when we needed him again. Then he tried to charge us for waiting time... Which, by the way, is included in the day rate anyway.
Honestly, face palm moment. We were stood on the street arguing about it, making a nice scene for the passers by. We'd offered 500, which is more than if we'd just taken separate drivers to each place anyway. Until one of the hostel workers came out and I couldn't understand the language but I'm pretty sure said stop being a douche, take the money and go. So he took it.
And then this morning the same driver was outside all fake sunshine and false smiles saying he'd take me somewhere for free. Oh hell no you won't, nothing is for free. I put my headphones in and kept walking. I had to cross the street so he'd stop tailing me down the road.

So I've got until 2pm when I plan to head to the train station, I've made a friend in the hostel and we plan to hit one of the forts. I've gotta see SOMETHING whilst I'm here, right?
Hmmm well, here it goes. We book an Ola (Indian Uber) to take us there. We're in it, driver doesn't seem to know where he is going, despite having GPS on his phone. Doesn't really speak English. So I've got the Ola app up and am showing him the route on it (at the same time I can see his app open with the same route on it). After a while going in the wrong direction he stops the car, says it's too far and we need to cancel the journey and rebook it and he'll take us the rest of the way.
So let me get this right, you want us to pay you for taking us to the wrong place, then pay you again for finally taking us to the right one? Hell no.
I told my friend to get out of the car and walk away. So that's what we did. Kinda expected him to chase us and demand money, but maybe my solid NO and door slam implied well enough that I am not one to take crap and be scammed like that.
Earlier in the ride I'd asked him if he knew where the fort was. Yes. Had he been there before. Many times. So it was not simply a case of being new to the job and not knowing where to go. Needless to say I reported him on the app.
I wonder how many times he's tried it on timid tourists who were willing to pay.
Tried walking to the fort and got as close as the photo before being like yeah, not enough time, gotta go catch a train. Bummer.
I tried, Jaipur, I tried. But I will not ever try again.

Jaipur... Has managed to make me angry. Ugh. The constant harassment from tuktuk drivers is so frustrating. It makes me really not like the city. What did I do? The constant harassment from tuktuk drivers is so frustrating. It makes me really not like the city.
What did I do? Walked around a bit, got fed up of it all, went back to the hostel to read my book.
Ventured out to get some food. Since my hostel is only £1 a night I figured I'd go for a nice restaurant rather than street food, so just went inside the first place I came across. Looked nice, kinda fancy, pure veg.
Well I wasted my money on the most flavourless curry ever. I ordered a malai kofta, usually my fave. It tasted like that one time I went into a little cafe in Budapest and said 'can you give me something veggie?' and she served me up spaghetti topped with sour cream. The plain rice was twice the price of every other restaurant and came with a bunch of bristles from a scrubbing sponge.
The tea I ordered with it was the only okay thing and even that was nothing compared to the tea on the streets.
I have to keep telling myself the meal was about £5, it's not that bad. But that's half my daily budget blasted on something I could've got in a crappy looking cafe for half the price.
Here's the lesson; don't 'treat' yourself when it comes to the food here. I had two potato parathas for breakfast at some dive near the train station, cost less than 50p and were really tasty. And they serve free drinking water, unlike these 'high class' places.
So after this major disappointment I check Maps - there's a cinema nearby. I wanted nothing more than a little escape to a different world to curb my frustration, so I go. All the movies are in Hindi. Nooooooo. Gutted. Especially as they were showing the incredibles 2.
So I sat in the hostel reading.
And another thing. As I cross the street to the hostel, I'm followed by a man asking where I'm from (I tell everyone I'm from Slovakia so they have nothing to say about it, ha), he asks if I like Jaipur and I say no. He asks why (following me INTO THE HOSTEL) and I say BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE. 'Sorry, but this is India!' he replies.
Truth.

Udaipur is beautiful with quirky little winding streets, fancy little vegan friendly cafes, tasty street food, pretty lakes, temples, palaces... Of course you've gotta take the beauty in one hand, the cow poo in the other. It STINKS! Poo is everywhere. It's a constant game of dodge the pats. I love cows and seeing them so freely wander everywhere is lovely, but consequently in these tiny streets you're constantly faced with the results of their backsides. I grant this the title of 'stinkiest city I've been to'. 🐮
It's a decent summary of my whole view of the country, that. You've really gotta deal with a lot of turds to enjoy the place. But I'd say Udaipur is worth the stank. And I saw no men peeing in the street. ☝️ Also, it's so touristic. This city seems built for it, everywhere there's shops with elephant hareems and multicolored tote bags or postcards on silk and stone carved ornaments, so many travel agents willing you to book a tour, bus ticket, train ticket - anything! But as it's low season, there's not enough tourists for all the shops. So they are KEEN to get you looking. Which is annoying but understandable, I guess. And good for a holidaymaker who wants to collect souvenirs, or tourists who want everything organised for them.
Want a place with everything on a plate? Here is perfect. You'll have no problem getting from A to B or finding western delights amongst this wonderfully old Indian city. ... What, however, is annoying and not understandable is a guy who decided he wanted me to drink tea with him at his stall being unable to accept my polite refusal... Following me down the street, jumping on his motorbike and pulling up right in front of me so I have to walk around to continue my route. SIX TIMES. 'The tea is for free!'
Nothing is for free, I reply.
Keep ruining your countrymen's already tarnished reputation.
Anyway, with the good comes the bad and all that. It really was a beautiful place, with a hostel at just £1.60 a night.

Mumbai things:

It's got crappy places (as per last post). It's got nice for tourist places (as per this post). It's got awesome street food.

In the street markets, everyone wants to sell you things you don't need - 'buy bin bags?' I don't have a bin. 'Buy table cloth?' I don't have a table. 'Buy this baby bouncer chair?' 👀👀👀 It's got fancy bars.
It's got designer shops.
You can walk down a street and be not only the only tourist, but the only woman. I don't know where I went but I was like okay, weird. No one harassed me though 👏

If I settled here and just made clothes and costumes for a living I would have easy access to the most amazing selection of fabric shops, haberdasheries, zip shops, ribbons etc.
And asides from the gross pee in the street ones, I met a bunch of awesome Indian guys! Hostel workers are the best 🤗

The tuktuks here actually use the meter! ... So, overall, for sure I enjoyed Mumbai. Kinda wish I'd stayed longer, but I'm having to move North quite swiftly now because I fly out of Delhi in seven days. So yesterday I got on a train for a 17 hour ride... Oh God, these rides are extra long when you're solo!! #backpacking #travel #mumbai #gatewayofindia #india #whereloocigoes

They'll just pee in the gutter, off a wall, onto a train track - whatever!
A foreign woman is walking in your direction? Care not; whap it out and whizz away! 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

Well, this is India's version. Probably less safe due to the lack of doors.
I'm in Mumbai after an overnight train ride from Margao in Goa. It could've been the most uncomfortable night so far, but luckily I was saved at the last minute... So I'd reserved a sleeper carriage ticket online (you can do this using an app called Ixigo and pretending you have an Indian address) but I was on the waiting list. They sell you a ticket for a sold out ride and you wait in line to see if someone cancels. However, they don't notify you if you fail to get a place, so you're there at the station with ten minutes until the train is due, refreshing and refreshing, hoping that you get confirmed at the last second... I decided to just go buy a regular ticket because I guessed there was just no way I'd be confirmed so late (I only got my 'you can get a refund now' email 24 hours later) and try just getting on and seeing if there was a place.
As exemplified in this video, general class can be crushingly full, even on overnight rides. I did not fancy it. So the trick is to buy a general ticket and just walk through the carriages hoping to spot an empty place, or beg the conductor to find you one. The train was an hour late and it's nearly 11pm by the time I got on. I didn't find an empty bed in sleeper and one of the conductors said there was no place left unless I wanted to pay to go in the AC cabin.
I'm on a tight budget so really didn't want to pay the extra 800 to go in there when the non AC would only be an extra 200, so I said I'd sit on the floor until the next station and jump into the general class. No no no they all said, it's so full, it's not good for you, just wait here and see. Here being on a staff seat near the door. Dunno if the concern was for me as a woman, or just as a tourist, but either way better than sitting on the floor.
Finally at 1am a young conductor came over and said he'd found me a place 🙏 hallelujah.
And comfortably I slept until 8am when the guy on the bunk above me decided to hop down and sit on mine, pretty much on my feet. 😅

Gotta love a bad English sign. They got one line right though - SAVE THE NATURE.
Unfortunately, not everyone respects this. A lot of the locals will throw their rubbish anywhere and everywhere. There's trash washed up on the beaches, empty bottles strewn throughout the jungles and most certainly everything is carelessly chucked out of the windows of moving trains. Last night I witnessed a man, who was sat mere meters from a bin, get up and walk to the track to throw his empty cup on it. It was the same distance to the bin.
I was chatting to a young Indian lad at the time (thankfully not a creeper 🙏) and he saw it too and immediately was like 'can you believe that guy just did that?' so it is good to know that the younger generations understand that littering is unacceptable.
Hopefully with the passing years things will start to improve dramatically! 🗑🗑🗑🗑 And on another note, you really cannot swim during monsoon. The sea is hectic! I dipped in for about a minute before I was sick of the drag. And then it poured with rain. I'm sure Goa is just wonderful in high season, but from now I'm gonna avoid the beaches... The up side is that it's so so green🌴🌴🌴🌴 #whereloocigoes #gokarna #palolem #india #indianbeach #savethenature #badenglish #backpacking #travel #goa

So here's a jolly little note on the street / beach dogs of India, from my experience... They're lovely! They just want love. You walk past one and they eye you cautiously. If you start talking to them in a sweet voice they're your instant friend, then their friends become your friends. I was swarmed several times on the beach by cutie pies wanting attention yesterday. Got covered in sand, was totally worth it.
They'll walk you home if you're out late, they'll guard you from the advances of locals they don't like (as I had examplified on Varkala beach) and they won't bite you. Sure, you'll always get that bad egg, some yappy little rat, but actually those types don't tend to live on the street.
So you know, you should always exercise caution when around stray dogs and bla bla bla... But really, just give them pats. Pats for everyone. They'll know if you're a nice person and if you are, you've got nothing to worry about 🐶

This nice little place is currently very quiet, but that meant getting a private room for 450 rupees and hiring a scooter for 150 a day. We drove around and climbed on rocks.
And when it was time to leave we headed to Hospet... Where I encountered these train station toilets.
Now, they're never nice. Even though you gotta pay to use them. But these were something else.
Those urinals were genuinely in the female bathrooms. For the lady who gives not one single damn.
But there were also cubicles. A couple were lit and I chose the one with a poopy nappy over one with turds scattered mostly everywhere.
Fun times! 💩

It was on my to-do list to go to a proper Indian cinema and see an Indian movie. So that's what i did in the town of Hospet. As you can see, the theatre looks rather horror movie. The seats reclined a bit and were pretty comfy, so that's the plus side to the down of it being quite dirty.
The theatre darkens and proceedings begin with everyone rising for the national anthem. This was pretty novel and actually made me proper smile cause, wow, so Indian. Few adverts and on to the movie: Race 3.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that about 35% of the dialogue was English so I could grasp what was happening fairly easily. And what was happening off screen was rather amusing - great screams erupting from audience members when a character was introduced. Fully high pitched, teenage girl at a Bieber concert style. And right at the end the main man ripped his shirt off and I'm quite sure all the (fully grown adult) men in the theater creamed their pants. It certainly sounded like it.
Oh and they have an intermission here too. Perfect for peeps and snacks. The snack selection was just like bombay mixes, shame as I quite fancied a popcorn.
The movie was everything I could've hoped for. There was ridiculous action scenes with plenty of cgi explosions, slow-mo bullets and impossible feats. There was lots of dance scenes - my favourite being the last one which randomly featured Black Swan style ballerinas in a rooftop rave setting. One chick pole danced. Another did silks. There was much romance and much badassery. Wow.
A great way to waste two hours, for the ticket price of just 100 rupees. That's like £1.10.
Earlier this week I did go see deadpool 2 in a much more modern theatre in Mysore. It was a lot nicer and I got my popcorn and still only cost 180 rupees for the ticket. So maybe I'll stick to the western places in the future, knowing it's still dirt cheap, but this authentic theatre experience was definitely worth having!

I still have dreads, piercings, listen to pop punk and nu metal, eat veg, don't want babies and only wear black. Not sure it'll change 🤔

Recap of my past few days, pictures from reverse:
Colorful Mysore! Not a city I'd put on my list of places to visit, but went there anyway and had a nice time exploring the markets and eating many dosas. Currently traveling with a guy and it makes a hella lot of difference on the harassment front! No more seedy comments, still getting creepy eye but they glance at him and tend to leave me alone... Or just ask us for selfies.

We hopped on an overnight train.
Was a surprisingly good sleep. No cockroaches scuttling around (not that I saw anyway) and I used my towel and scarf as blankets, ziplock full of clothes as a pillow. Food selling men did the rounds and I had some kinda weird fried onion cookies and cups of chai. Shouldn't have drank the tea though because I had to pee TWICE. And let me tell you, those toilets ain't fresh. Hanging on to a rail with my right hand to help me balance through this rocking ride whilst I'm squatting, hoping the wet ground is water and not misfired wee, filling a cup with water with my left and then splash washing my fanny and leaving with a soggy crotch, simultaneously making sure my hair doesn't touch anything and I don't sprinkle my ankles.
Anyways, woke up around 6:30am and food men do more rounds. More chai, some little samosas which were tasty but left me needing an immediate poo when the train stopped at 8am and I could squat without rocking in the station. Paid 5 rupees for that visit. Another splash wash, but a very thorough bum one, where after I felt the need to wash, baby wipe and sanitize my hands 👐
This station is Hospet and our destination is Hampi so we jump on a bus there. Then on a little boat and on a hunt for accommodation and breakfast. Success. A shower was glorious, then we hired a scooter and climbed a lot of steps to a view point. Then ate lunch and made friends with a cat 🐱

I've named them Fred and George Weasley, even though I'm pretty sure they've got names already.

Madurai was a fun time, lots of sunshine, big temples, ghandi museum (where I learned how awful the British were / are... Sorry about that, India) and walking around markets.
Then jumped on a bus to Munnar. The ride was stunning and I mean STUNNING wiggly mountain roads, green everywhere, flowers. Sadly it rained a LOT and I resorted to wearing a plastic bag on my head as I didn't have an umbrella / anything waterproof at all. I was informed that my baghead was even more ridiculous than the quantity of rainfall. Ah well. I now know what the real monsoon is like. You know when it rains in jumanji? It's like that.
This led to a decision to cut the visit short and hot tail it out of there the next day and head to Mysore. A 13 hour ride on a ever so slightly better than normal bus with a 5am arrival time... #madurai #india #travelindia #backpacking #temples #whereloocigoes #mountainroad
