With the re-opening of the WTC Cortlandt Street (1) station, MTA Arts & Design proudly presents “CHORUS” (2018), a new monochromatic marble mosaic by renowned artist #AnnHamilton, fabricated by @mayerofmunich. “CHORUS” marks the historic site below the former #WorldTradeCenter with a field of text in mosaic bas-relief, weaving the words from the US Declaration of Independence with the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, meant to acknowledge the civic ideals and aspirations of humanity and society. The 4,350 square feet of white-on-
white tactile surface invites subway riders to engage with the words as they touch the text, creating the opportunity for meaningful personal encounters.

Radiant mosaics featuring mandalas, starbursts and a winged creature greet subway riders at the just-opened entrance to the 34th Street-Hudson Yards (7) station at West 35th Street. This is the final segment of #XenobiaBailey’s masterful creation of glass mosaics at the station. The 750 sq. ft addition was timed in conjunction with the building above ground, as the new entrance will serve the growing #HudsonYards community’s office and residential population. In its entirety, “Funktional Vibrations”, fabricated by #MiottoMosaics, spans 3,000 sq. ft., bringing a cosmic burst of energy and joy to the station architecture. .

As part of the 2018 station improvements, artist #ChristopherWynter has extended his glass #mosaic artwork, “Migration”, at the Cathedral Parkway (110 St) Station (B,C). Located near Frederick Douglass Circle, a gateway to #Harlem, the artwork was originally installed in 1999 and continues to evoke the spirit of #migration. Recurring circular patterns (both complete and incomplete) and imagery such as houses atop stilts and wheels, ladders, the North Star, footprints, and African symbols of spiritual centering weave a pathway through the shifting dynamics of passage throughout the updated station.

As the sun sets on August, @mtalirr travelers return home to #RoyNicholson’s newly installed artwork "Hempstead Plain, Morning & Evening" at the #LIRR Hicksville station. The 72 laminated glass panels bathe four platform waiting rooms with vibrant light and color, capturing the feeling and excitement of a train swiftly rushing through the open #HempsteadPlain at dawn and dusk. Expanding on the artist’s colorful mosaic landscapes installed at the station ticket office in 2002, these sprawling transparent vistas are inspired by the historic writings of naturalist Henry Hicks, whose grandfather, Isaac Hicks developed the first plant nursery in the area, with each waiting room named after a tree representative of early 20th century writings on the bucolic area: oak, sumac, cedar and maple. As a long time #LongIsland resident, the artist stated "I wanted to connect today’s commuters with the landscape they are passing through and to echo the historic prairie with its indigenous plants, sweeping vistas and colorful morning and evening light.”

@davaygrebere's video installation playfully mimics the constant stream of visual information that we all experience daily. He remixed recognizable, colorful kinetic objects, into an entertaining and witty new universe of familiar objects such as balloons, bouncing balls and stuffed animals. The fluid pace, whimsical imagery, and prismatic palette of “Skyyys™” creates harmonious visual-music that complements the pace of commuters at Fulton Center, a likewise kaleidoscopic space of transition.
