After getting to a flat surface where I could rest and take in the view, I gave up on the hike and watched them continue the climb instead. With each step, they became tinier. The massive dunes made them look so small, almost insignificant. Although I was frustrated by my personal fitness level, this experience left me feeling humbled, and lucky.”

Words build worlds. They are vessels of reputation, a means of categorization, and a code of identification. They are how we distinguish difference, signpost narratives, and draw meaning from our lives.
Here we ask: What is the difference between the words “immigrant” and “expatriate”? At the surface, both terms are rife with notions of difference, division, and hierarchy. But the differences between immigrant and expat aren't fundamental to how or why each move. An immigrant is one who moves from one nation to another for reasons of work, family, education, or escape. An expat does so for exactly the same reasons. So why the distinction? The difference seems to be drawn from who these individuals are, where they’re coming from, where they’re going, and how easily they travel across those borders.

When @sktarts arrived in Colombia, they heard about an old wreckage site off the coast of San Andrés. After looking up how to get to the cove where the sunken treasure lay, they set out to investigate with their drone. When he mentioned a certain neighborhood by the name of Jodipan, we quickly scanned the internet and realized that we had stumbled upon the perfect pit stop. Jodipan, a former slum, is now referred to as Java’s rainbow village because a group of students, along with a local paint company, took it upon themselves to give the town a complete makeover in order to save it from eviction. I couldn’t help but feel in awe of such an inspiring tale. The memory of the bright, bustling village and the feeling of being able to witness such noble determination made this one of my favorite places to photograph in Indonesia.”

Connected to reality and the surrounding countryside by a single narrow walkway that leads to an impressive stone passageway, the town gives the impression of entering a world in which time seems to have stopped. Ivy drapes over arches and scrambles up stone walls, potted flowers fill the balconies, and winding stairways are found at every corner. Each alley holds a surprise. As we contemplated the charm of the ancient village, we couldn’t help but feel we’d traveled to a remnant of another life.”

However, as soon as I arrived in Tübingen, I knew instantly that it would be my favorite city in the region. Home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, the small, student-oriented city is brimming with liveliness and diversity. After a pleasant walk through the Old Town area, I ventured to the riverside to catch the sunset. Colorful buildings, gondola-like boat rides, and people picnicking by the river’s edge under the soft light of the afternoon created a picture-perfect moment to capture.”

On this particular adventure, my friends and I scrambled up the Early Winters Spire to rig an alpine highline. It's not an activity for the faint of heart and demands focus, strength, and balance. As the sun began to dip below the mountain peaks, I repelled down the face of the spire to capture this image of my good friend Ari (@ariintheair) walking the thin line that has become his place of solace. This experience showed me that going the extra mile is worth it — whether that means going to the more secluded beach that’s just a little further away or to the top of a mountain with over 150 pounds of gear to spend eight hours rigging a line for a couple hours of fun.”

However, the hikes and photo opportunities at every corner quickly turned our short travels into big journeys. Our winter road trip through the South Island was a remarkable visual experience. The view of Mt. Cook popping out of the clouds was so breathtaking that I was constantly overwhelmed by the desire to stop, grab my camera, and jump out of the car. Though the weather was not always our friend, we were lucky on this particular morning. The sky was clear, so we rushed to the viewpoint where I took this shot. A few minutes later, Mt. Cook was hidden by the clouds. In this moment, I remembered the importance of being both patient and ready as a photographer — you never know when you’ll encounter those seconds of magic.”

I never had an answer until now … I prefer to take ‘the road less traveled’ because it has allowed me to grow in ways I don’t believe I could have in more conventional locations. Countries in which you aren’t required to abandon your comfort zone are still wonderful destinations to explore, but, in my experience, I have simply found more joy in the alternative — even if that means biting off more than I can chew. I choose to take this path because it allows me to think deeply and specifically about our shared humanity, our differences, and, most strikingly, our similarities. At the end of the day, I feel that in taking the road less traveled, I am chasing a feeling of gratitude … I am chasing what it is to truly see and feel something for the first time. I’m chasing what it means to be free.” Read @shaylyn.marie’s full essay via the link in our bio #passionpassport

As sunset approached, the birds and other diurnal animals in the area ceased their chorus, and all was quiet. There was a unique 'loudness' to the silence, though, which added to the serenity of the twilit cityscape around me. It’s a struggle that has, to a great extent, defined the social and political discourse of the modern era. Issues of social equality have gained recent, and significant, momentum and have manifested in movements like #MeToo and the increasingly powerful presence of women in politics, education, and social positions. We’ve seen a greater global understanding that our societies are informed by our biological makeup, not necessarily bound to it, which has opened conversations about the ways in which notions of gender roles create disparity of opportunity and outcome. But women’s political legitimation is only part of a battle that has multiple fronts, as women’s lives continue to be governed in ways that hamper our global potential.

In honor of Women's Equality Day, we’re asking the question: How far have we come in regards to gender equality? To explore the answer with us, click the link in our bio. #passionpassport 📷 @erinoutdoors

As it's the country’s second-largest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we decided to follow the signs. Upon arrival, we discovered that Bergen is a place filled with warm people, incredible culture, and colorful wooden houses. In fact, the latter were so mesmerizing to me that it made it difficult to believe that the city had been nearly destroyed by a fire in 1702. During our visit, we indulged in freshly caught seafood from the harbor, wandered the city's streets, and watched as golden sunsets spread rays of joy, hope, and color across the city. It was a beautiful reminder of how people can bring their home back to life after tragedy.”

"High in the hills near Lijiang, China, I witnessed an incredible live performance called Lijang Impressions. The set and choreography were done by Zhang Yimou, the director of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Research I'd done in preparation for my trip informed me that this show was a moving cultural immersion opportunity, so I made it a mission of mine to see it during my six-week journey through the country. The spectacle beautifully depicted the traditions and lifestyle of local ethnic people — such as the Nakhi (or Nashi), Bai, and Yi — who are believed to be the descendants of the nomadic proto-Qiang, an ethnic group that have inhabited the Tibetan plateau since ancient times. In this scene set against the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, women carried traditional hand-woven baskets filled with their days' work in the field. As remnants of ancient China played out in the hills around me, I sat in awe. It felt as though history was unfolding before my very eyes. It was unlike any performance I'd ever seen."

But, have you ever heard of Ardnamurchan? Embarrassingly, neither had I until just a few months ago when I found myself talking to a fellow walker out in the mountains. ‘It’s unspoiled and undisturbed,’ he told me. I doubted that. I’d spent a lot of time in the Scottish Highlands, and it seemed to be more popular than ever. But he was right — Ardnamurchan is different. There’s no need to worry about finding solitude there. If you thrive on isolation and want to experience life on the edge, you’re sure to fall in love with the 50-square-mile peninsula. To put it simply: Ardnamurchan is pure, and it will steal your heart.” To explore Ardnamurchan with @_aawild_, click the link in our bio.

At over six kilometers (four miles) long, Lake Sorvágsvatn, or Leitisvatn, is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands and is situated on the island of Vágar. It took us an hour to hike up to the spot where this photo was taken, and true to what we’d heard, the perspective offered from where we stood was an optical illusion. It appeared as if the lake was hanging precariously over the Atlantic Ocean below — when in reality, it was not. The sight of Sorvágsvatn from this perspective was absolutely surreal, and while the trek up had been long, it was worth every step. Never before had I seen such an incredible landscape. It was one of the most remarkable I’ve ever beheld, and one you must strive to see at least once in your life." 📷@hybridyang 📍Faroe Islands

On the first Thursday of May, the Festival of Serpents takes over the small Italian town of Cocullo. Originating over 3,000 years ago, the ritual is dedicated it to the snake goddess Angizia and was designed to ward off bad omens. Now representative of the marriage of paganism and Catholic rites, the festival welcomes thousands of photographers, ophidiophiliacs (snake lovers), and believers each year to crowd together in front of the town’s statue of Saint Domenico and cover him from head to toe with live snakes.

We had heard a lot about the seals in the area, so my biggest goal became photographing at least one of these creatures. As I was flying my drone, surveying the landscapes, this happened — this seal introduced himself! It seemed as though the drone made him a little curious, in a playful way. I was beyond happy to have been able to capture a moment so pure. Moments like these allow you to forget everything around you, and this is why I love photography — it’s what it’s all about! That said, it's important to remember that nature is our biggest treasure, so if you go out and explore the world, be sure that you don’t cause harm and are respectful of the environment around you."

Karma plays an important role in the philosophy of documentary photographer Réhahn (@rehahn_photography). Since 2011, his Giving Back Project has aimed to honor the individuals that have made the success of his photographs possible. Instead of embracing the “one photo equals one dollar” approach, he retraces his steps once a shot receives a certain level of recognition, finds his subject once more, and makes a meaningful contribution to their lives. For him, the camera is simply a tool to facilitate the opening and closing of a circle in the relationship between photographer and subject. As he sees it, “it’s a vehicle for social responsibility.” To learn more about the Giving Back Project, click the link in our bio.

"From the moment I stepped into the crowded street of the Medina, the spirit of Morocco revealed itself to me in burning color. Every sight, smell, and sound was tinged with intensity, and every interaction was met with unparalleled hospitality — it truly seemed as if the entire city was conspiring to help me get where I needed to go. As a woman traveling alone, you’re often warned against engaging with strangers, but Morocco reaffirmed my faith in humanity in a way no other destination has. My time there was a reminder of the goodness in people — a lesson to approach life with a loving heart and an open mind. As Moroccans like to say, 'You happy, we happy, Allah happy.'"

"I recently had the opportunity to visit Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town located in a suburb of Shanghai, with a friend. Though the journey over was quite complicated, the destination was worth the wait. The well-preserved architecture, friendly disposition of the locals, and vivid traces of ancient Chinese culture gave us the sense of being transported to a different world. As I took in the beauty of Zhujiajiao from the comfort of a traditional boat ride, I was inspired to share the essence of the town with travelers who had not yet crossed paths with it."

"It was almost 6:30 in the morning, and I had risen early to try to catch the first light of the sun. In Mykonos, this is when you’re most likely to meet the last of the club-goers from the night before — dancers drunk-walking in the narrow alleys of Chora, or lovers embracing near the waves of Little Venice. I took it all in. I then came across a lovely woman with gray hair standing on her small balcony. She shouted “Good morning!” to me in Greek. From that greeting, we started talking and she asked me about my life in the Netherlands. She explained that she had traveled all around the world and considered herself lucky and happy because of it. I asked if I could take a photo of her, and she answered, humorously: “Are you sure? Look at me! There are so many other young and beautiful women on this island to take pictures of!” I then replied, saying, “But you will always be ‘Miss Happiness’ in my memory and in my heart.” Maybe that's why I don't remember her real name."

"As I stood alone among the white sand dunes of Namibia's Deadvlei, it seemed like time had frozen in the six years since my last visit. So much had changed — it now swarmed with visitors — but the ancient Acacia trees still stood, unconcerned by the passage of time or the extreme fluctuations in temperature. I wouldn't experience the full extent of latter for a few days, though. Far from the intense heat of the Namib desert, I stood in the middle of a major national road, shivering and scared, in an attempt to photograph the night sky over Etosha National Park. I couldn't get a permit to enter the park at night, so my aim was to capture the Milky Way there, on the asphalt. I was so fearful of oncoming traffic that even the sound of the wind blowing the sand made me jump. My efforts were well rewarded, though, as going from past to present and from sweating to shivering got me the two images that combine to make this starry shot."

I’ve lived in the city for more than 20 years, and this Kremlin in Izmailovo never ceases to amaze me. I don’t like photographing Moscow in the rain, though, so I try to only capture its sunny days. When I checked the forecast on this early August morning, the weather was predicted to be sunny. But as soon as I set out, it began to drizzle. At first, I was disappointed, but then I noticed how the reflections made this palace look like an illustration from a Russian folktale. It was then that I realized it’s not necessary to watch movies or read books to experience a fairytale-like environment — they exist in real life, too. From now on, every time I visit Izmailovo, I hope to capture this fantasy atmosphere that has the power to brighten even a dull, gray day.” 📷@fibi_finch 📍Moscow, Russia

"Our trek to Everest Base Camp would not have been possible without the yaks. These animals are synonymous with Sherpa culture. Everyone wore yak’s wool to protect themselves from the falling snow and biting cold, and the food we consumed often included a bi-product of yak’s milk — butter and cheese, which was a good source of energy for the difficult climb. Even their dung was utilized as fuel to keep the fire running for both cooking and warmth. For me, though, the yaks provided a sense of ease. It’s cold and silent up there, and you’re often numb, hungry, and exhausted. Hearing the jingle of their bells in the air reminded me that I wasn’t alone. They kept me going, and for that, I am forever grateful."
