My preschooler loved this as she got to make it with me and then we used it in our "playschool" lesson that morning on counting.

The snowflakes we made with one of my craft punches. But, it would be easier to use some ready made.

If you have #toddlers or #preschoolers then our weekly themed activity plans are a great way to have fun, play, create and learn based around picture books.

Today on our weekend trip to London we explored a museum that i remember well as a child but haven't visited since i was a tot.

After a hearty breakfast at @royalgardenhotellondon we packed up our bag and headed on the tube to The British Museum.

Although having to deal with my kids asking questions like "so how old were you when that was made" as i explained about the Rosetta stone to dealing with a 9 year old obsessed with nostrils and how big they are on statues.

Normally our London trips are time constrained and impacted by travel arrangements. It was so nice to stay in London and not have to be up at silly o'clock to get down for opening time to avoid the crowds.

Kids have already put in a request to return in warmer weather so we can visit some of the parks and not freeze!

Will be sharing more about the hotel tomorrow as well as the two museums so keep an eye on Rainy Day Mum.

So our first trip a weekend sight seeing in London whilst staying at @royalgardenhotellondon in Kensington.

Saturday the kids choice - Natural History Museum trumps it all.

Finally got to see the human evolution exhibit and the 'Lucy' skeleton.

Then onto the hands on Geography in the Geological exhibits from volcanoes and earthquakes to glaciers and the big bang it was fabulous.

Next stop the natural world and the blue whale skeleton in the hall... ohhh and Andy's clock a hark back to our Cbeebies watching days and his adventures.

We finished off with a walk through Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Past Kensington Palace with T wondering which royals were at home and to our hotel for the night.

Check out our stories for more of the day and a peek at the hotel which is set up fantastically for families.

It finally feels like autumn in the UK. The leaves are starting to change colour and it's getting cooler.⠀

We've put away the summer stuff and we're well on our way to cold weather fun.⠀

As we are still cooking up a storm in the kitchen with apples from our neighbours and friends trees. I thought it would be a great time to make some simple 2-ingredient apple scented playdough!⠀

I know only 2 ingredients! And it smells amazing. We like to use it whilst counting, playing and pretending that we have apples to share with the animals in our play farm.⠀

It's just one of the activities that we are sharing in our 30 Day Autumn Challenge for Toddlers and Preschoolers. You can sign up for these fun ways to play, create and learn all month over on Rainy Day Mum all this month.⠀

Just head on over to our profile and you will find the link to join and get our play calendar and then the activities will roll into your inbox from Monday!⠀

I am going to try the "How to make your own pumpkin purée" from @rhythmsofplay
I can't wait to finally make pumpkin pie as well as use my own Pumpkin Purée to make the muffins I shared last week.

I have no idea how much purée 3 pumpkins will make but I have been waiting to do this for years.

Way back in 2011 I didn't start Rainy Day Mum with the idea that I would run the blog as a job. Instead it was a way for me to share the simple ideas that I was doing with my toddler.

I had set the goal for myself that each day I would do something with him spending one on one quality time.

The way that made me happy was getting creative.

Today over on Rainy Day Mum I am sharing an activity from Create your Own Happy a new book for kids from 7 - 11.

Full of ideas and activities for kids to do, as well as explaining the science behind happiness.

This activity from a section of the book on Making the World 🌎 Happy and a Build your own Recycling Monster.

Of course my two decided a Monster wouldn't do such a great job as of course if he ate all the rubbish then he would have to poop it out somehow!

Instead the created this little guy. Rubbish the Recycling Monster Robot. All from items out of our recycling bin.

As a family we got so much more out of this activity than just a junk modelling activity. Head over to our profile and read all about this and how it made us happy as well.

The first time we met the words with "igh" in them we used this simple method of building the words to help my youngest with her spellings.

She learnt best doing and this idea was perfect as whilst she built the word using the red igh and smaller blocks to make up the other parts of the words we read the words together combining 3 different ways to learn.

DO ~ READ ~ SAY

The megablocks and duplo still haven't gone away instead they've gone down from their rooms to play with and instead I use them to help with spellings and other homework.

A whiteboard marker, the blocks and the spellings lists are all that we need and all though unlike the spelling wall that I shared last weekend this isn't used every week it is one of the ideas in my arsenal of helping her gain confidence that she can spell.

I'm away for the weekend for @blogonuk where I'll be talking about Search Engine Optimisation. Before I went though I decided to treat the kids and my husband to a delicious breakfast.

My slow cooker cinnamon rolls can be started the night before and then finished off in the morning before breakfast.

Although most weekend's I prefer to have a lie in (well as much as someone that has to leave the house on a Saturday by 8:30am with ballet ready daughter can) I set my alarm extra early so that we can enjoy these together.

Once started I headed back to bed to read a little and doze before we got up and ate these warm from the slow cooker then to the station for me and dance for my daughter.

I love recipe like this that you mix, set and wait no fuss, no complications and taste so good. If you would like the recipe head over to Rainy Day Mum and search for Slow Cooker it's one of the sweet slow cooker recipes that we have shared on the site.

It's time for a flashback this Friday - to one of the first "learning" crafts that I shared over on Rainy Day Mum.

My toddler (who is now 9!) suddenly developed an interest in letters so we decided to make our own animal letter book.

Animals because that was the other thing he was interested in. We started off with his favourite animal at our local zoo the leaf cutter ants.

Whilst digging through boxes this week as I try and get some semblance of order to my office space I found our letter book. Including all of the letters that I never photographed or shared.

So guess what I'm going to do - I'm going to share them starting with a is for ant and going through the alphabet as we did when he was a tot.

So far you can find a is for ant and b is for bird over on Rainy Day Mum - c is for caterpillar (inspired by one of his favourite books The Very Hungry Caterpillar) will be up next week.

I love looking back at these and seeing his enjoyment at crafting as well as the moments captured back when Rainy Day Mum was not even a year old.

Check back as I will be sharing these as I write them up over time.

For the last 5 months we have been sharing simple activities to do each month with your baby.

These simple ideas are ones that I did once upon a time with my two.

We're now up to 5 months, and I must say that this was the point where I started to be able to feel that I was more than just a food source and comfort.

I was someone to play with and laugh at as I did silly things.

One of my favourites was to sing silly rhymes especially on the changing table. With my youngest it was essential otherwise she would be off, my eldest was content to lie there and giggle with me chatting away.

If you have a baby between 0 and 5 months why not head over to the homepage (link in @rainydaymum profile) and scroll down for our baby activities section. All of the activities are there in order to click on and go to find some inspiration of simple things to do with your little bundles in the first 6 months.

Then keep an eye as on the first of next month we'll be posting ideas for 6 months (where it becomes REALLY interesting as you can start to play with food!) #babyactivities #first6months #babies #parenting #newmum #newparent #parentingforthefirsttime #firstbaby #newbaby #newborn #1monthold #2monthold #3monthold #4monthold #5monthold #activitiesforbaby #babyplay #learningthroughplay #motherhood #firstimemum #newdad #firsttimedad #firstbaby #baby #babygirl #babyboy

We were talking colour mixing the other day and as we went through the primary colours, secondary colours.

A little voice pipped up but how do we make black!

Well.... ummmm... it's like different colours all mixed together until it makes a really dark brown that looks black.

That answer wasn't good enough for the questioner - so remember a simple science experiment I used to do when I taught I decided it was easier to show what black was made from than to try to make it with our paints.

This basic Chromatography experiment uses simple materials that we have at home and showed fantastically that the black ink we used was made from blue, and yellow as well as a little red.

We tried some other colours as well to see what they would separate out into.

If you would like to find out how to carry out this simple science experiment about colour then head over to Rainy Day Mum and search for Chromatography.

Last week after making our pumpkin crumble topped muffins (recipe over on Rainy Day Mum NOW!) I headed shopping whilst they cooled and got distracted by the pie fillings.

Anyone else think that autumn just calls out for pie!

Well it turns out when I got home that instead of pie (although I will be baking plenty of that) I decided to try mixing up my Vanilla and Raspberry Cheesecake Bars with a more autumn feel.

These were the result -> Brownie based cherry pie cheesecake bars.

My husband and son refuse to try them because "YUCK, CHEESE!" which leaves all the more for me and my daughter.

These are real autumn comfort food and taste delicious, because I love to share my successes in the kitchen you'll have to check on Rainy Day Mum next week for the recipe as today's all about PUMPKIN!!! #recipetesting #recipe #cherrypierecipes #cheesecakerecipes #brownies #cherrypie #comfortfood #fallrecipes #autumnrecipes #familyrecipes #recipecreation #browniecheesecakebars #fallfavourites #tastesamazing #cheesecake #cherries #brownierecipe #cheesecakerecipe #sweetfood #sweettooth #cakelovers #bakefeed #bakeday #homemadecakes #recipeoftheday #makeitdelicious #foodinspiration

Way back when my eldest was in school and my preschooler was at home waiting to be old enough to join him I used to set up simple activity trays.

These were quick and easy activities that she could do without getting out lots of equipment and would often keep her occupied whilst I tried to get jobs around the house.

She called these trays her "homework" as her big brother was getting homework from school.

One of the first ones that I ever set up was this simple Apple Tree Math Activity using our Apples from our @learningresourcesuk sorting pie and homemade apple trees.

She was fine counting outloud but was working on counting out the objects so this was perfect. For our #appleweek we set up the tray and she would bring it out. Count out, match, trace and play with the apple activity whilst I helped her or did my jobs.

I've just updated the post (who knew how small the images used to be on my posts!) and written up the full instructions as well as added some more activity ideas for toddlers and preschoolers on the apple theme and added some extra fun with linking it to our favourite apple book Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins.

If you are looking for more apple activities then check out our @virtualbookclubforkids account here on Instagram this week as we will be sharing some featured activities as well as featuring those activities that are shared with us in our stories.

It's back to school for many in the UK this week and it won't be long before we get our first spelling list.

For one of mine they just seem to be able to look at the word and then spell them perfectly.

The other - well it's a struggle. A real struggle for much for the last 2 years in the weekly spelling test they have got a maximum of 2 out of 10!

So we started to put in some ideas, some ways to help those pesky words go in and stay there.

The spelling wall was something that we used every week - just a pack of post-it notes and a pen.

We spend time working out the words, what they mean, then write them on the post-its.

Once they are on the wall then as we eat our meals we can spell them out. We can remove a word and play Kim's Game and remove one then ask what it is.

It's so simple but it seems to have worked and for the last half term last year instead of that 2 out 10 then they were getting 6 or 7 or 8 and 1 time a full 10 out of 10.

I've stocked up on post-its for this year and we are ready to go as I know that the spellings are only going to get harder and the confidence of getting more right than wrong can do wonders.

1 that the bugs got early on and the other that we are each taking a bite from to decide the fate of future apples from the tree.

With the one full of bugs the kids have asked to do their favourite easy art activity.

Yes they may be 7 and a half and 9 now but today they want to make apple prints.

So I got out the paint, they cut the apple and made the prints.

It was like having toddlers and preschoolers again - but they got that the prints shouldn't overlap. They got that if they cut the apple different ways it makes shapes.

And then they cleaned up after themselves. If you are joining in along with our Virtual Book Club for Kids then next week is all about Apples and if you do nothing else get out some apples and cut them up. Provide some paint and let your little ones print.

Come and follow us over on @virtualbookclubforkids and join in with the hashtag #vbcforkids sharing simple hands-on apple activities all next week.

I'm in dreaming mode - where will we go next summer.

This picture is one of my favourites from 2017, it's from Cyprus and the Avakas Gorge nearish Paphos.

The kids loved exploring the gorge.
Yes it was HOT it was August and we had to walk from the car park at the top as our little hire car was not going to make it down the sand road.

But with a backpack with water and comfortable shoes on our feet we discovered a cool paradise at the bottom of the rocks.

The kids turned from passive travellers to active travellers.
Asking questions, learning as they went and learning from the world around them. They became explorers finding out more and wanting to learn more.

It changed the way that we travel. We knew that they were interested in much more than just building sand castles on the beach or visiting a theme park.

Now as I prepare for another long school year. I keep myself going with dreams of next summer so we've got our thinking hats on as a family and looking at maps, books and instagram to see where we fancy going next.

Our short list isn't so short but we have a few months to decide.

But for now... I will finally get these pictures sorted and printed there is only 9 years of family trips to do!

I've named EVERYTHING because my kids lose it all... I've collected the 3 sweaters, 2 pairs of shorts!!! and a lunch box (YUCK!!!) that my kids left at school last year.

And for the first day I only had to send 1 back in to pick up the lunch box that they have already forgotten which I think is a record.

I would love tips on how you get your kids to remember to bring everything home.

They are great getting their stuff together for school, we do that the night before and they are prepared for the day ahead.

But.... at the end of the school day they can walk out of the school with nothing leaving everything from their coat to the lunchbox and reading books every single time.

HELP! I end up being the moaning mum on the playground every evening and we're almost always the last to leave as I wait for them both to collect the forgotten items.

With being away most of the summer I'm behind with everything. We kicked off The Virtual Book Club for Kids for it's 6th year last week.

This week we're fully on board and not trying to join in from Norway!

The theme this week is Numbers and we are featuring the book Mouse Count by Ellen Stoll Walsh.

Our activity was a fun and easy movement one. Making giant number lines in the garden with the foam numbers from our play mat.

Simple activities like this are great for you and the kids to do at home and you and they have fun whilst they are learning.

If you would like more information about the upcoming themes and featured books you can head over to @virtualbookclubforkids our new account here on Instagram where we are sharing #bookishplay and #kidlit inspiration for toddlers and preschoolers.

Check back in our feed and stories early next week for next week's Apple Activity and the featured book Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins.

And I've never actually cooked with them so I thought I would try a recipe first with some canned pumpkin before using my precious little babies I've nurtured all summer.

I made my own pumpkin spice, it was so easy and based on a recipe from the Betty Crocker website but as we're not fans of so much nutmeg I switched it around a bit.

Then time for some pumpkin muffins... Oh wow, they taste amazing especially with this crumble topping (which has added pumpkin spice as well). Now I can't wait for my own pumpkins to ripen so that I can make this again. And I've already planned to add a plant to my vegetable garden next year to ensure that we can have these every autumn.

I know that you love recipes as much as I do so I'm planning to share this next week on Tuesday which is my "recipe" day on Rainy Day Mum.

In the mean time I'm just going to have to make more apple and cinnamon loaf and muffins with the apples that I picked up from the farm shop.

Our legs are tired, it's raining (or too hot, too cold) and we have been getting on each others nerves with everything we do or say.

I could just not share it the truth of travel with kids. But... it is there and this is our real life of travel with kids.

Caught in a candid moment. These two needed some space from each other. Other kids around them. They needed space from us and a break.

On a longer trip we would do a pool, beach or water park day. Which they would love. But in a long weekend away we got out the tablet with Netflix on and they did the train journey relaxing with a movie.

I love Netflix for this we can download a bunch of shows and movies. Then even if we don't have wifi but have power it works.

As I looked back through the pictures of this summer I realised that for the first time in recent years I had put myself in frame.

So instead of just being the boots or just a story I thought I would introduce myself and the family.

Here goes I am Cerys, that's Rainy Day Dad (Big J), J whose 9 and has dreams of being a Jungle Explorer. He's frog crazy and can be found drawing Pokemon or arguing with T who is 7 and wants to be a scientist probably with marine animals but maybe with snakes or spiders!

Before I became a mum I was a teacher and before that I worked with Sea Turtles in Costa Rica and Greece.

I always thought if I had kids I would just return to work. But after spending half a year in a wheelchair when pregnant with J my views changed.

I had no idea what to do but knew that I couldn't be the teacher I wanted to be for my students and the mum I wanted to be for my kids.

And the kids came first. When T came along it was a sure thing whilst they were not at school i would stay at home.

Needing to do something I started a blog that some people called a "silly little blog" and now 7 years later it's my job.

I love what I do now. The freedom it gives me to be there for the kids.

Next week the kids return to school and the school day routine starts again.

Whilst they are at school I will be preparing to present at @blogonuk in September jn Manchester about SEO and in Orlando in October at @bloglifeu about International Monetization.

For now though 3 random things about me.

1) I have a phonia of crabs. Horrid run the wrong way things.

2) I first backpacked solo at 19 years-old in Egypt for 5 weeks.

3) I lived in a tent on a beach in Greece for a summer. Or more accurately I slept on a beach in Greece for a summer and had a tent for a closet as I patrolled most nights and slept under a tree in the day.

No it's not. It's the fabulous architecture of the Oslo Opera House.

After a walk through the castle from the ferry we headed to the water. And there in front was this.

Looking just like ski slopes built around ice windows when the rain stopped and the sun briefly came out it was dazzling.

We head around taking a peek at the artist impressions for the development of the area and thinking it would be great to return when it was finished.

Then arrived to take a walk. Up the steps and slopes peering through the windows and after talking with the kids about opera making plans to take in a show sometime soon back home.

The station is close by as are the trams so if you don't fancy the 9 miles of walking we did around Oslo then you can get there easier.

Ever since my geography teacher when I was 11 shared pictures of the research trip he had done in Antarctica I have been fascinated by the Polar environment.

Then came Life in the Freezer and I was hooked. I even applied to the British Antarctic Survery for a marine zoologist position. But ended up instead in the polar opposite working in the tropics.

The love of these extreme envitonments must have rubbed off on the kids and their choice of a museum to visit in Oslo was The Fram Museum.

The Fram Museum is devoted to polar exploration and inside houses not 1 but 2 full ships which you can explore. As well as artefacts, and interactive exhibits perfect for kids.

With a fantastic introducory film about the Polar Explorers and expeditions it was clear that the Norweigns were the experts. The first to navigate the North West Passage to Alaska and the first to reach the South Pole.

From J (my eldest) the highlight was the cold room, a quick insight into the cold on deck, plus an ice mummy.

For T it was all about the trips, she did wonder where the women were but saw them in the modern pictures. But it was life on board she liked. The piano on the Fram, the living spaces and the sewing machine that my mum has.

I need to return. Unlike the Viking Ship museum there was information overload and instead of reading all of the information we focused on the objects, the ships and the hands-on expereinces.

Oslo has so many museums, but if something different interests you and you are intrigued by the Polar Regions and explorers then this is for you.

Learning about the people that live there, their culture, the food, the language and also the history of that country.

In schools only so much can be taught. But in a trip you can learn so much more.

The Viking ship museum in Oslo was my first choice of museums to visit in our day in the city.

For me, this museum gave so much more than just looking at the ships.

The artefacts at the back from the burial of the 2 Viking women were so interesting.

A cauldron, shoes, horse shoe for winter, a bucket and more posed lots of questions from the kids.

Plus the map out side which showed the viking voyages to Canada. Meant we were asked why we say Columbus discovered the Americas.

Both J and T loved the film. Without a word it showed how the boats were built, the Vikings lived and what happened at death.

This is a museum well worth a visit. Plus unless you visit on a Monday you can also visit the Historic Museum near the Nationsl Theatre in Oslo for free.

A short visit indeed but well worth it and without flashing lights and special effects the information was presented perfectly for kids.

Fear of the unknown, difficulty of doing something or a real phobia.

As a family we did something new to all. Ziplines and treetop trails "high and low" adventure park in Norway.

This young man started the day terrified. It would have been so easy for us to say thats ok you had a go we can stop.

But... instead we used our strengths as parents and leading and following him he faced the fear.

A step, a zip, a jump and a climb at a time. To the point at the end he was sad to leave and can't wait to return.

Did I enjoy it. Yes, but boy do i hurt. 9 years ago I was in a wheel chair my pelvis hasn't returned to right and today I hurt. But to encourage him and support him that pain is worth it.

Today though... his legs hurt and we have had a moody nearly tween on our hands. The memories he made, the confidence he's gained and the fun we had made up for it.

One of the things I remember from childhood trips was visiting a mine.

In Kongsberg, Norway there is a Silver Mine museum.

By a mine train you journey 2km into the mountain where you explore the mine and learn the history of mining in Norway since the 17th century.

As a family we loved how fantastic it was to have a guide that spoke English and gave a guided tour.

For the kids, there was a gem treasure hunt. Collecting 5 quartzes from treasure chests in the mine these were then presented and a reward was given.

The reward a chance to make a coin.

We also had a go at silver panning.

I don't think we will give up our day jobs. But, boy was it back aching.

So it's a first for us. We're visiting friends. Friends that I met in antenatal classes 9 years ago.

Instead of hiring a car we decided to use the trains.

The kids have travelled in Switzerland by train before but my husband never in a country apart from England.

He's been surprised at how uncomplicated it is compared to UK travel. Plus how easy it is to travel by train with kids.

I see travel by train more in our future especially in Europe or further afield.

This little one has found her sea legs both above and brlow the waves.

We're now starting our journey home. A night at the marina before catching our flights home.

Coming out to the #britishvirginislands less than a year after Huricane Irma we weren't sure how it would be.

The destruction from it is evident on land as well as below the waves. But, the people, businesses and environment are showing signs of recovery.

We will be back! Not sure when but our hearts were captured by the islands in 1999 and we continue to return and explore more.

A catamarran this size can't be sailed by a single person. We work as a team.

A team that as the weeks have passed they have become more involved in.

From animal spotting at the back of the cat to taking a side for mooring and steering the dinghy to different places.

As they are 9, 8 and 7 we have also had our fair share of mini teens on board but when it counts they are hands on deck working together.

For the first week here with just the boat as her edge of the pool she was scared.

She snorkelled with a life vest. Holding tight to a hand.

10 days later and she's showing her birth sign. A real water baby.

This shot captured as she went down to investigate a ray swimming along the bottom.

With 3 kids on board I did wonder if there would be enough to keep them occupied especially as we have chartered the boat and luggage space was limited.

But they have embraced the sailing life. They help steer the boat, moor up and with the chores on board.

When not helping or swimming they can be found playing games, watching movies, reading, painting or just chatting.

Our youngest here now can't wait till she turns 8 and can join the sailing club at home as well as the dive club and get more skills.

I will probably join here. New goal by this time next year to get at least dive or sail certified.

When we revisited back in 2006 i was dissspointed by the litter and graffiti that was starting to appear.

My parents said last year was even worse.

This year though it is pristine, the graffiti is gone there is no litter and below the waves the eco systems are starting to recover.

Explore by foot or swim around it is amazing that the power of the sea has shapped these huge rocks smooth.

Back in 2006 we were here when Hurricane Ben came through.

We moored in Spanish Town, one of the safe harbours on Virgin Gorda.

Today we are filling up on water and getting provisions.

The harbour supermarket is the first picture, the bar where my husband and I spent the night at a Hurricane party the second.

The force that hurricane Irma came through with means that safe places were not safe.

It's amazing how different but the same the islands are.

This young lady is only 7 and was 3 the last time we went on a boat. Now she can't wait till next summer. She will be old enough to go to sail school at home.

I think i will join her and get my Day Skipper as well so that I can take a more active role rather than following.
