Unfortunately for Arizona fans there was nothing to cheer about after Cindy McCain did the pregame coin toss as the Redskins would have their way with the Cardinals on their way to a 24-6 drubbing. Obviously national anthem protests have been a big story over the last couple years so I did my research to find out if any Broncos players protested during the anthem. My buddy Ron Chenoy would give me a heads up that two players would likely be silently protesting in the visitors tunnel. With that tidbit of info I went in the tunnel before the anthem and found Broncos players Brandon Marshall and Demaryius Thomas sitting silently behind a female security guard as she stood with her hand over her heart during the song. I'm sure many people have likely become too enraged by this photo to have read down this far but I find an odd beauty in this moment as it portrays people with different views exercising their free speech as they choose to and most importantly, without infringing on the others ability to enjoy the anthem as they see fit. As a third generation combat veteran THIS is one of the things we served for, the right to peacefully protest. Now on the other side of the token just like they are free to protest, everyone else is free to judge them which is always a risk you take when exercising your rights... 🇺🇸

Yesterday I took my fiancé @knz4191 and our two dogs Bailey and @zoeytherescuedog up north to our happy place for a needed day of fun and relaxation. It was fun hiking around in the 58 degree temps as a light rain fell on us. We would spend some time walking the rocky shoreline of Woods Canyon Lake enjoying the views and sounds of Bald Eagles talking to each other as thunder rumbled in the distance. After I illegally caught 10 tiny crayfish to put in my fish tanks (Shhhh. Don't tell Game and Fish) we would begin the two hour drive back to the valley. While this day was all about my sweetheart, it still is monsoon season so I made sure to bring a camera, tripod and shutter release cable along just in case... After having to drive (and sometimes hydroplane) down the mountains from Payson through some heavy rain and lightning we would get in front of the storm just as the setting sun was throwing some nice light on this shelf cloud that was coming out of the storm so I had to stop and try and capture a winner. You can ask Kendra, I was literally yelling and jumping up and down like a cave man begging for a huge CG strike but unfortunately this baby bolt was as good as it would get. #canonlove

Spent six hours storm chasing storms north of the Phoenix area, setting up and shooting from six different locations. First up I would shoot from Cordes Junction before tracking back south, to a hill on a dirt road off I-17 near the Bloody Basin before bailing due to close lighting (as @mikeolbinski was just showing up) then spent awhile on a frontage road overpass in Black Canyon City, which included an interaction with a Yavapai County Sheriff for my parking location, thankfully none of my warrants showed up in his system! From there I would shoot from Jomax Rd along the 17 before finishing up on some storms viewable from New River. Didn't get many photos for my effort so heres a shot of a CG strike dwarfing a power line transmission tower from the dirt road near the Bloody Basin.

After a four day trip to Minnesota I would wake up this morning at 4:45am not tired at all. Dilemma time. Try and force myself back to sleep or lay in bed researching crypto online? A bright flash of light from the backyard would catch my attention. Either it was the paparazzi again or there were storms near! I checked the Radarscope app and sure enough there was a line of thunderstorms coming up from the south. Four minutes later I am in the backyard, in my underwear, with two @canonusa cameras on tripods getting some decent lighting bolts. #thanksjetlag ⚡️

Every year that I come to Brainerd I always spend a little time on Saturday night back at the track to capture some of the tomfoolery at the most famous campground/party sport on the NHRA tour (perhaps all of motorsports) the Brainerd Zoo. This time when I arrived, instead of seeing all the people driving their scooters and floats around the bumpy dirt roads of the campground there was a massive crowd at one spot. They were surrounding the jet powered dragster of driver Tony Franco Jr who was preparing to light a giant pile of pallets on fire at Camp Pallet to begin the party. The fans went absolutely nuts when Franco lit the afterburner setting the pallets ablaze. Such a badass show. As I drove back to the hotel I couldn't help but notice the irony that less than 24 hours earlier jet car legend Doug Rose had passed away and this was exactly something he would have been all about. Fun fact: The first photo I would EVER have published in my career was a photo of Doug Rose parked in dirt just like this doing a car burn at Atco Dragway back in 1991. The Franco team likely didn't realize it but this was a perfect tribute to the fallen jet car legend. #RIPDougRose 🐍

As soon as I saw this random scene of a big RV out on a tiny peninsula of land surrounded by water I knew it had to be my foreground for a shot. In my opinion the most important thing to a good lightning photo is an interesting foreground or background. Now I won't lie, I had a fantasy of a lightning bolt striking the RV which would have made for a much cooler photo! ⚡️🚐🔥🙈

Last nights storm chasing adventures would take me 237 miles over the course of nine hour leading me down to Casa Grande then up to Sun Lakes before heading out to Canyon Lake then finally finishing up in Apache Junction. As is the case with a lot of my storm chases, I wouldn't get my best shots until about 25 minutes after I called it a night and started the hour and 15 minute drive of shame home. All it took was a massive CG lighting strike visible out of my side window for me to change my mind. I would get lucky by coming across a hill on Goldfield Rd with a great view (which explained why it seemed to be a popular spot with local storm chasers as there were four other photogs out there) This was the most impressive bolt I would get during my 30 minutes shooting. I was fortunate enough to get shots of it with two of my three cameras I had set up. The first image was a full frame shot at 70mm on my 70-200 lens. The second frame got the entire strike and more of the cloud structure at 28mm on my 24-70mm lens. #Canonlove ❤️ Now the real question is what shot do you prefer?🤷🏻‍♂️

Last nights storms from South Mountain have likely ruined that spot for the next year or so as it will be a hard to top all the close lightning I got. The best part about a really productive chase is that once you have several good bolts under your belt you can start taking more risks. I had two Canon 1Dx's set up, each with 70-200mm lenses on them facing different directions to get two storm cells, leaving me with a third body to try something random with. Since the lighting was within 10 miles of me I usually would have gone with a 24-70mm lens but I already had some winners in the bag so I took a risk and went with a fixed 300mm lens aimed where I saw rain falling. Within a few minutes I would be rewarded with this shot as twin bolts struck a farming field in Chandler near the interchange of I-10 and the 202. #canonlove

I was pissed with yesterdays lackluster storm chasing results so I came into today incredibly motivated to not suck. While I had initially planned to head towards Apache Junction, in the middle of the drive I would call an audible and head to one of my favorite shooting spots, South Mountain. Unlike the last few days where I would drive hundreds of miles to storms, this chase I would sit around for nearly three hours having to talk myself out of ditching the mountain and heading east before finally spotting some lightning on the horizon and setting a camera up. After sunset the storms exploded in nearly all directions (except above me thankfully) allowing me to set up three camera aimed in different directions, all getting awesome stuff. I honestly could have sent up two more cameras and gotten great stuff if had brought enough tripods and shutter releases. This photo was of an awesome multiple CG lightning strike in south Chandler. #Canonlove

Yesterday was a great reminder that for every good day of storm chasing, there are two or three crap chases thrown in just to destroy your chasing confidence. Less than 10 minutes into my chase north on I-17 yesterday I would have a front tire start separating and flapping around on the underside of the SUV. Thankfully I was able to limp it to a Discount Tire in Anthem for two new tires and would be back on the road an hour later. I would spend the next six hours racing all around the Phoenix metro area failing to get any good bolts at spot after spot. I finally gave up in Buckeye and drove towards home before getting a late dinner and checking out my images. I was pissed to see that I didn't have ONE single photo worth posting. On the four minute drive home I would see some lightning flashes to the south and next thing you know I'm perched on a small mountain near my house seeing tons of flashes but very few visible cloud ground strikes. After an hour on the mountain I am over it and much like a fisherman who says ok 5 more casts and I'm gone, I initiated my three shot rule. If I go three 30 second shots with no lightning I bail. This photo was literally in the final milliseconds of my final shot. I saw the flash at the same instant the exposure ended and the shutter closed. I figured the shutter was closed but much to my surprise it actually wasn't! ⚡️⚡️⚡️ #smallvictory #tonightwillbebetter #hopefully

Fun fact: Eight hours early still wasn't early enough and I would have to argue with several non deodorant wearing photographers (in the 100 degree high humidity heat 🤢) to squeeze in between them. Ultimately it was worth it as the opening ceremony show put on at the National Stadium (better known as the Birds Nest) was absolutely incredible. After it was all over I can still vividly remember the 1.5 mile walk with all my gear to then wait in line for a media bus pickup to ride back to the MPC (media center) to then wait in a line to transfer to a cab to take me back to my hotel for about 4 hours of sleep before getting right back to work. #olympicphotogsarealmostashardworkingastheathletes 💪🏽 #exceptwedonthavesteroids 😂

The last time I was at the famous stadium was in 2010 for the NCAA football BCS championship game between Alabama and Texas where my favorite shot of the game was probably this one of Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram flying over Texas Longhorns cornerback Aaron Williams on Alabamas way to yet another national championship. 🏈

Tonight was a tale of two completely different ends of the storm chasing spectrum on a 400 mile chase with my good friend Guy Rhodes. Started off by heading an hour towards Wickenburg for a storm that died right away so we doubled down and decided to head north on State Route 93 towards Kingman before the storms died and we finally gave up and made the U-turn of shame to head home as failures. But Mother Nature is a fickle bitch and as we got back near Wickenburg lightning started flashing off to the distance so we would set up on the side of a desolate road and finally got some action. After about 15 minutes we had so many lightning photos that I made the risky decision to pack up and move to find a new spot despite CG bolts raining down. Found a new spot and set up but after about 4 minutes the lightning was so close we had to cower in the car before we moved on with a white knuckled drive through pouring rain on windy mountain roads to finally end up in the parking lot of a casino on a big hill in Prescott, AZ. Vindication for a rough couple of days of chasing! #ItsSoVeiny #batwing 🦇

United. Definitely wasn't happy to learn he wasn't starting the game. Instead he came into the game about 10 minutes into the second half and didn't provide me any solid photos outside of this shot as he headed the ball against Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Doneil Henry (2) in the inaugural game to be played at Audi Field. #shouldabeenatWorldCup #USAproblems
