(near) BIRMINGHAM, AL: Enough already! 10 year old Carly has lived 10 years in the shelter -- yes, her whole life. 😭 Carly warms up quickly to people, she loves companionship, she loves belly rubs, she loves learning, she loves kids...well, this girl is just a lover! So why is it so hard to get her any attention? Carly has always lived in a small shelter without much foot traffic in rural Alabama. And if it's this hard to get her any interest with social media where lots people see her story, then you can see why she has lingered for so long at the shelter. PLEASE SHARE! 😭😭 Calhoun County Humane Society wrote, "Carly is a senior with a sparkling personality! She is a lover of people, belly rubs, special treats, sunbaths, and just a little bit of rabble-rousing. She has never in her life lived in a home.
We can scratch our heads and throw out ideas, but we will never really know why Carly has spent her entire 10 years of life at the shelter. With her gorgeous Catahoula coat, her youthful sense of fun, her welcoming wag...she is easy for us to love. But she'd really appreciate having the love of her very own family for once in her life. You may think Carly will have a hard time adjusting, but she's been a visitor at Encore Enrichment Center and she did just great adjusting to new places and people, while also learning basic manners.

Carly is patient with kids and fine with cats. However, Carly is a fickle girlie when it comes to dog friends. She would rather not have another female dog around. And it seems the older she gets, the younger she likes her doggy-men (under 2 years old!). Yup, she's a cougar. If you wanna adopt a cougar, come meet Carly! Someone needs to keep the young 'uns on their toes!

Carly weighs 60 pounds and is in dire need of a diet. She has no health issues. She was spayed long ago and on heartworm preventives for life. She has little stiffness, and the weight loss will help.

A shelter meet-and-greet is absolutely required if there is another dog in the home." To adopt Carly, please email [email protected] to apply!

I have followed your page for a long time now and it was actually my initial inspiration for considering adopting a senior. We went to the shelter with an open mind about age and breed, and what we ended up finding was perfection! We took home a 7 year old (not sure of his real age) #pitbull and have never looked back.
Simon adjusted to apartment living quickly. He was already house broken (perks of a senior pup!), literally never barks, is friendly with kids and dogs, knew many commands and was eager to love and please. I was even able to teach him to roll over in just 2 days. He thinks all 70lbs of him is a dainty lap dog, he 'talks' in his sleep, and he is always down for a nap or snack.
In the year that we have had him, he has truly opened up his heart to us. The amount of unconditional, judgement-free love he provides is life changing.
Sincerely,
Kelly" ❤️ #seniordog #angel #bff #adoptdontshop

HOPKINTON, MA: You don't have to like pickles to be a lover of Pickles! She's kind of a big dill! 😉 10 year old Pickles is as yummy as she sounds. She gets along with everyone and has a lot of love to spread around. And she still has so much kick, too! Pickles is a pint-sized senior who sure could use a good home; a place that will thoroughly enjoy all of her senior flavor. PLEASE SHARE! 💞💝💞 @browndog_coalition wrote, "Meet Pickles! She is about 10 years old, 11 pounds and based on her markings and size, she may have some #beagle or #Chihuahua in her mix. We know that pickles (the food) are pretty polarizing - you either love them or you hate them, or you prefer sour or sweet. Well, we can assure you that you'll become a sweet pickle fan after meeting this little love.
In her foster home, Pickles has been enjoying a quiet life of soft food, comfy dog beds, a daily walk and gentle people. She walks so nicely on leash and makes friends everywhere she goes with human and canine alike. While Pickles comes with a lot of bonuses: house-trained, friendly with people and dogs, very portable, adorable, endearing, etc. She is missing a thing or two: she does not have any front teeth and she had to have a mammary tumor removed. She's a small dog, with a lot of pep in her step, and a lot of love to give to her people.
Her ideal home is one with people who are around a lot to spend quality time with her and tell her that she is loved every day. Brown Dog Coalition is a volunteer-run and foster-based dog rescue based out of #Hopkinton, MA. If you would like to meet her, the first step is to fill out an application. We don't have the man power to transport dogs but have a pretty wide adoption radius for those are within driving distance to Hopkinton, MA." Well, now is your chance to have your very own Garfield...the dog! 🤣 This snuggly guy was surrendered after he was done being used to breed puppies, a pretty sad fact. But the good news is Garfield is far away from puppy-making days and now he can't wait to live the life of the spoiled dog he should be. He just needs his very own "Jon" (that was Garfield the cat's special human!). PLEASE SHARE! 😻😸😻 @friendswithfourpaws wrote, "Move Over, Fat Cat! There is a NEW #Garfield in town! Sure, he’s got the same coloring and he loves to snuggle in to his comfy place and EVERYone loves him, but this Garfield loves everyone back! No case of the perpetual Mondays here.

Garfield is an 8 year old, 8lb #Pomeranian. He was surrendered to us from a breeder, probably because he was too old to breed any longer.
Garfield loves to follow his foster around (maybe he gets that from Odie?) and loves to be brushed into his most stunningly beautiful self! He is not a huge fan of long walks and is new to doing his business outdoors, so still working on that! But wee-wee pads and a 'belly belt' are really where it’s at for this guy. He is good with all - cats, dogs, and people. And who knows- maybe he loves lasagna! We just know that this is the one Garfield you need more than in just the Sunday comics, you need him EVERYday!
Garfield is UTD on all his shots and in fantastic health. He is microchipped, neutered and with his breeder life behind him, he is ready for a life filled with endless love and cuddles for you both!! After her former owner moved into a nursing home last April, Susie moved to the shelter and also bounced between a couple foster homes. She was a wonderful houseguest everywhere she went, but Susie wanted something more permanent. And that she found with her new family!! Susie's face on her ride home says it all!
Jessica wrote, "We were the lucky family that was able to bring home sweet Susie after the post from her shelter in northwestern Iowa, . We have been followers of Susie's Senior Dogs for years - our last pooch Rupert was featured somewhat recently as a Rainbow Bridge post - and we have experienced firsthand the value and importance of loving older dogs. No dog will ever replace another. We loved Rupert fiercely and his death was devastating. We needed time to grieve. A co-worker of mine gave me some solid advice last spring when he said, 'Don't get a rebound dog. Get a dog that is right for you.' We cried, we waited, and then we found Susie.
We spent the summer casually looking but mostly grieving. When we came across Susie's post this past week, her face absolutely stole our hearts. We were fortunate enough to be chosen as her parents and we already love her intensely. We have to give many thanks to Kristi and the amazing team at Emmet County Animal Shelter and also to Susie's amazing foster family. Thank you for loving her until we could bring her home. Thank you for all that you do.

This is on the ride home. She alternated between looking out the back window and keeping her front paws situated on the console between the two of us. Truly a co-pilot on her trip home to the Twin Cities and a co-pilot for so many of our future adventures.
We are going to keep the name Susie! We debated changing it but then my husband made a Spotify playlist for the six hour trip called 'Susie Q' and the Julien Baker song 'Me and My Dog' came on as we drove into town, so it seemed something like fate.
xoxo,

Jess, Jeff and Susie

I was helping with a Humane Society adoption event at work when I randomly decided to check out the adoptable dogs on the their site. I grew up with rescue dogs, and knew I’d eventually adopt one - specifically a senior after following SSD from the beginning! - but it just never seemed like the right time. I don’t know what made me look that day, but the second I saw Lola I just knew we belonged together. My next thoughts were whether or not it was a good idea, could I care for her the way she deserved, was I ready? I posted her picture on Facebook and told my friends to talk me out of it. That was a giant fail because all I got was a wave of support and encouragement. I couldn’t stop looking at her picture. So, I filled out the application that day and made an appointment to see her.
I saw her that night and she stayed across the room. She wouldn’t even look at anyone unless I bribed her with food (same, though, honestly...we’re the same soul!). Even though it was one-sided to start, I knew she was my new best friend. Now we’re inseparable. She had (and still has) severe skin allergies which were largely untreated at the time, she was suffering from an ear infection, and clearly had birthed many puppies in her estimated 6-7 years (a senior for her Olde English breed). I didn’t know the vet bills that awaited us over this last year and a half, but it wouldn’t have (and still doesn’t) matter if I had known then. I’m so thankful that I’m the one to provide for her. It is such a small price to pay for all she’s given me.

The amount of love and happiness she had brought to my life is infinite. Watching people fall in love with her is just the best, and makes me even more grateful to be her human. I can’t remotely put into words the love I have for her, but I tell her every single day she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I hope she feels it. There’s a quote I love that perfectly sums up our connection, {'I feel like a part of my soul has loved you since the beginning of everything. Maybe we're from the same star.' - Emery Allen} -Chelsea & Lola" ❤️ #seniordog

Meet Edna! This 14 year old angel is up for adoption after she was left abandoned in the backyard. Edna's former elderly owner moved to live with a caregiver, and the family members didn't want (or want to help) Edna. It's pretty heartbreaking! Thankfully Edna was placed with a reputable rescue to ensure her future. But due to her advanced age she is having quite a hard time getting adopted. PLEASE SHARE! 👵🏼 Dachshund Rescue of Houston wrote, "Edna was abandoned in the backyard after her elderly owner moved away to live with a caregiver. A neighbor contacted the remaining family members, who state they didn’t want the dog, so the neighbor contacted Dachshund Rescue of Houston to save her.

Edna is 14 years old and weighs 9 pounds. She is a very sweet little girl who love to nap, roll around in the grass outside, and eat! Edna may be considered a senior, but don't be fooled! She still had spunk. :) When Edna is not napping, she loves eating, going outside and exploring, rolling around, and making quick laps around the back yard. Edna loves to prance around the house and outside. All she needs to be happy is a comfy bed and blanket, some yummy food, and a loving family!

Edna has been fully vetted by Dachshund Rescue of Houston and she is ready for a new Forever! We prefer adopters reside in the state of Texas, but we will consider other states based upon our ability to verify the adoption expectations and logistics. (However, out of state adopters MUST travel to Houston to meet and pick up Edna.) We require a fenced yard, if you live in a house. And all resident animals must be spayed or neutered, consistent and current with vaccinations." "Just wanted to provide you an update on Max, who we adore! He is the sweetest little guy considering everything he has gone through. He is always happy, waggin' his tail and has such a sweet disposition. He was not a big fan of food when we got him, and now, we can’t go to the kitchen without him racing to the treat jar.
When we got Max, he had lots of dental issues and he had two large holes in his upper plate due to the large eye teeth being pulled. We recently took him to The Animal Dental Clinic in San Carlos and he had the most awesome doctor who took care of him. Max was sneezing a lot and you could literally look through those holes in his mouth and see his sinuses. He had surgery to close the holes up, and 3 weeks later, one of the holes opened up again. He had to undergo a second surgery in which the doctor used stronger suture material and we’re happy to say he came through like a champ.
Max also had a growth growing in-between one of his 3rd and 4th toes. It was benign, due to an infected hair follicle, but because of where it was the growth was getting larger and looking real purple. To let it go would have probably continued to spread his toes apart, it was in a bad place. We scheduled surgery for him at the Sage Hospital here in Campbell. He removed the growth a week ago. Max also had this tiny little round thing on his other leg/ankle (which never concerned us), but we figured we’d have it removed also while Max was under anesthesia. Much to our surprise it was a BB! Max had been shot with a BB earlier in his life. This made us very sad.

Anyway, it’s been a week since the surgery on his toe and his ankle to remove the BB. He is doing well and still very happy. Max sleeps with us every night in our bed and we do everything we can to ensure he is happy, gets his daily exercise and is one happy little #doxie. -Lisa" ❤️ #seniordog #adoption #adopted #adoptdontshop

She still hasn't received any adoption applications. But maybe (hopefully?) now that summer is winding down she'll have better luck. Jilly has been cooped up in a boarding facility, which is pretty much like a shelter. She's a happy dog in an unhappy circumstance! Jilly is totally cool with cats, but would prefer a home without canines. Overall, she's an easy-peasy gal! PLEASE SHARE! 💙💙💙 @adoptagolden_bham wrote, "Jilly was a stray who took up with a local fire department. The department called animal control who called us. Jilly needs to get out of boarding and have someone to love her. Life hasn't always been kind to Jilly in her 8 years on earth, so far she’s had had a pretty rough history. She came in covered in ticks and fleas. She also had a ear infection and some skin issues. Quite frankly, she needed some medicine stat and a couple of weeks at a spa.

But here's the good stuff, she’s usually smiling, except when pleading for a new home as you can see. She is sweet and pretty and calm. Jilly loves to cuddle, gets along great with cats (not so much with other dogs) rides well in the car, and she is the easiest dog ever - loves kids, does well on stairs, and walks well on the leash.

Jilly weighs a tiny 39 pounds of cute. She's a tripod; her left rear leg was amputated some time ago. She's skinny and her fur coat needs some help; nothing that a few nutritious square meals won't fix after a while.

Jilly deserves a nice owner and a nice home and a really good bed. So are you the one to make Jilly the happiest girl in the world? She hopes so; she's looking for you. Please make her dreams come true.

We don’t transport; adopters must come to #Birmingham." To adopt Jilly, please email [email protected] to apply! ❤️ #seniordog #adoptme #alabama

From "trash" to "treasure" -- 8 year old Charlie got ADOPTED!!! 💜💛💚 As the saying goes, one person's trash is another person's treasure. And it's especially sad when it applies to living beings. When Charlie was left behind at a gas station by his former people he probably felt a little bit like trash. So you can imagine how he feels now with his new family! Charlie is a treasure and he is being treated like one. Charlie is heartworm positive (which was disclosed prior to his adoption) and his new mom Kristen has so generously and lovingly taken Charlie into her care. He's been given so much! Not only the love of a family, but also all the vet care he could possibly need. Charlie has most certainly found himself a treasure, too!
Kristen wrote, "Charlie is a happy guy and is getting along really well with my other dogs. My friends and neighbors think he is a very special guy who just enjoys everything.

Since he will be crate confined through the heartworm treatment, I am keeping him outside as much as possible. He absolutely loves rolling in the yard, tearing apart toys and leading the squirrel patrol. Charlie is a neighborhood favorite and gets so excited when he has human and canine visitors. He was probably an outside dog, but has not had any problem taking advantage of the indoor life. I fell asleep on the couch and when I woke up Charlie had crawled between my arms, wrapped his paws around my hand and had his head on my cheek. He is such a sweet dog!
Charlie is my third senior dog I've adopted. I know you hear this all the time but it is worth repeating, rescuing a senior dog is so fulfilling regardless of the time, health issues or challenges that come with them. I think you can see how happy Charlie is in the pictures." ❤️ #seniordog #treasure #love #adoptdontshop

Her family wrote such lovely words!) Sweet little Inkie was an SSD foster dog (through @animalhaven) back in January 2016. She transitioned into our home as a foster quickly. And even more quickly, she was adopted by Aimee and her family. For the last 2.5 years, Inkie has known nothing but love, affection, tenderness, patience and the sense of belonging. To be surrounded by the amount of love that Inkie had at the end of her life is one of the most special things on earth. Saying goodbye to our loved ones is so hard. I worked at a vet clinic and I LOVED the pit bulls that came in. I didn’t realize how much of a hassle owning a pit bull but not a home would be. Nonetheless, Brooklyn (my first dog) was my life and my best friend.
We went through countless moves together and she was my shoulder to cry on through a couple bad relationships. Sadly, she became very neurological in the beginning of 2016 and we found out she had an aggressive brain tumor. After I had to put her to sleep, I was so lost. I didn’t think I could ever love another dog like I loved her. She was my soul dog.
Fast forward a few months and I was just looking at senior pets on my local rescue’s website. I came upon a frail little #pitbull named Diamond and I realized that I could NOT get her out of my head. They estimated her to be around 10 years old (I believe she was probably 12). She had horrible arthritis, hip dysplasia and dental disease but I knew that with me, she would get the best, most loving care in her old age. I met her and didn’t feel that bond I had with Brooklyn. This is understandable though. We didn’t know her history or anything she had gone through in her 10+ years of life. As time went on, we became the best of friends. The name Diamond never stuck. We all called her Granny and she did her best to keep up. She LOVED her tennis ball to the point of it being an obsession. She would play fetch as much as her little legs would allow. It made me so happy seeing her so happy. Mobility was hard for her but she was a trooper.
Her mental state declined quite rapidly over this past winter and she became very confused, anxious, and wasn’t the same dog I met a year and a half earlier. Sadly, Granny went to doggie heaven earlier this year. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
I still miss her. I knew that she wasn’t going to be around for long but I didn’t realize how bad it would hurt to lose her. It’s been 7 months and right now, I’m not ready for another senior pet. Losing Granny was tough. Will I do it again though? Definitely. Whether it’s a day, a week, a month, or years-rescuing a senior pet is worth it. -Amber" ❤️ #seniordog

Can't you see how desperate he is for your attention? This almost 8 year old boy has been lingering in the shelter for over eight months. His story has been reposted from SSD over 2,200 times!! But still nothing has panned out for him. Leroy's ideal spot is a low traffic home without stairs because of his stiffness. His size and age have been the major deterrents for potential adopters, but Leroy is just a big softie. And, as you can see, Leroy is a toy-loving, puppy at heart! PLEASE SHARE! 🐛🐛 @austinpetsalive wrote, "Leroy is a big guy who gets ZERO attention at the shelter. He's in one of our larger kennels to accommodate his size but it's still a kennel which isn't ideal for this sweet, old man. Plus it's in a back corner that people don't always notice. And he deserves air conditioning and humans to love on him.

When other dogs Leroy's age are mostly interested in the couch, Leroy still loves toys, loves playing fetch, and still gets the zoomies around the yard! He loves his toys and enjoys picking a toy out of the chest each day. Not that he doesn't appreciate the couch. A lot. His signature move is to lay a big sloppy kiss on you and then run away as if you wouldn't know it was him.

For all his goofiness and affection, Leroy can be a bit nervous with new people. But you won't have any trouble knowing when you've earned his trust (see: big sloppy kisses). Treats are the quickest way to win his heart and mind.

Leroy needs a low traffic home (without stairs). He could go in a home with older kids and/or well matched dog. He is heartworm positive but treatment will be through APA so a local adopter would be ideal." To adopt Leroy, please email [email protected] with any questions or to apply!

We had been visiting shelters for over 6 months when we stumbled across Bea wearing her 'Adopt Me' vest in the lobby of the Humane Society. At the time, we weren't looking for any specific age or breed. But once we met Bea and considered the advantages of her age, we decided a senior dog was a perfect 'starter dog' for us.
I'm am an educator and love everyone's #backtoschool photos shared across social media. The fall after we adopted Bea, I set her up with a backback and snapped a photo of her on the porch. Bea loves hamming it up for treats and I love a creative project, so this has become our annual September tradition. In addition to her modeling career, Bea has led a life full of adventures. She enjoys hiking, travel and playing the sport of K9 Nosework.
This year, we celebrated back-to-school and honored her proud senior status. As the years go by, her face grows whiter and her naps are longer. But she is still the very best girl.

Cheers to the new school year (and the golden years),

Susie has been looking for her forever home since last April, after her former owner moved into a nursing home. Susie has bounced between the shelter and different foster homes and always adjusts beautifully, but it's time Susie finds the forever home of her dreams. She really doesn't want to have to move again. PLEASE SHARE! 💥💥 A shelter volunteer wrote, “Susie has been with us since April of 2018. She is a 10 year old Pug mix. Susie has been in a couple different fosters while we have had her and she adjusts fine to new homes. She gleams from ear-to-ear whenever she gets some attention and is just as sweet as can be. She even had the opportunity to go to #DogObedience with a 4-H class and really enjoyed #agility!
Susie gets along great with other dogs and cats. Older respectful children would be fine too. She can’t wait to show her new family how much #spunk she has and how much fun she could be even at 10 years old.
Susie has no health problems and is on no medication. She has a fatty tumor on her side, but that is not a medical concern. She is altered and she is potty trained.
The shelter requires an application filled out on our website. As for transport, our group typically does not do this. However, we could work with someone within a reasonable distance. We like to meet the adoptive family to see how the dogs react to everyone in the home." To adopt Susie, please email the shelter at [email protected] with any questions!

This was our girl Sara last summer on the first day we brought her home forever!! Those teats! Those worts! Oh my!! 😱😰 Sara has always been beautiful, both inside and out, but I'm so happy her puppy producing, neglectful days are wayyyyy, way behind her now. Sara’s big love personality and extremely forgiving nature are something all of us humans could learn from. Not to mention her self body-love and confidence — she’s always belly up! Ugh, wish I could be more like her! 😝 She is seriously THE BEST DOG EVER. 😍

With that being said, Sara isn't 100% perfect - no dog is. (No human is.) Sometimes she takes treats a little too eagerly from your fingers, sometimes she'll shamelessly snack on her poop (gross!!!! 🙈 also forces us to pick up the yard often), and occasionally she has poop accidents in the house overnight (but that's because she gets quality food to eat...and sometimes, well, ya just gotta' go!). On paper, they may make her less desirable. Or actually waking up to a big poop in the house - more than once - is a common reason dogs are brought or returned to shelters. I include these things because while our girl Sara is not perfect, she is PERFECT.
So far, we’ve had 14 months of love together. And truly each day isn’t taken for granted. The more dogs you have to love - especially those adopted as seniors - and the more dogs you inevitability lose, I believe the more thorough your heart becomes at loving them. With experience of older dogs, and losing them, I’m better at loving Sara. But she’s always been perfect at loving me. 🙃💓 Senior happy tails are one of the best parts of SSD. We always want to hear your adoption story!! Please submit to: [email protected] — don’t forget lots of pictures!! ❤️ #seniordogs #bestdogs #adoptdontshop

This sugar-pie senior was used solely to breed Treeing Walker Coonhound puppies her whole life - until her body could no longer. It wreaked havoc on her bladder and as a result Dolly can only hold her pee for a few hours at a time. All of us reading this (hopefully) see it as 'no biggie.' But, sadly, that's the reason miss Dolly cannot find a home. Oh, and the fact that she is 10 years old. Poor darling Dolly! PLEASE SHARE! 🌳🌲🌴 @greyfacerescue wrote, "Dolly was a former breeder dog who was going to be euthanized until one of our local shelter friends saw her sweet face and said NO WAY! These are Dolly’s golden years and right now she is sitting in a kennel. She has been kenneled for far too long before.
Dolly has been with us for 9 months and was recently adopted out, but her new adopters didn’t feel they had the time to dedicate to her. Dolly can only hold it about 3-4 hours. Because of all those years Dolly spent pumping out puppy after puppy, she was terribly neglected and her body paid the price. Don’t get us wrong, Dolly is a CHAMP at playing and running and well ... 'dogging' ... and she is every bit as spirited as a younger pup. But as a RESULT of her previous life, she will do best on a consistent schedule and will need to be let out about every 3-4 hours. Seriously, that is IT. She is a REALLY awesome dog, but she does need someone patient who is willing to work with her to learn at her pace.

Dolly is beautiful. And goofy. And she LOVES people – kids definitely included! She’s playful with dogs – even puppies!! She gets a little too excited when around kitty cats so she will do best in a no-cat household.

Grey Face Rescue is based in #StCloud, #MN. We adopt to families throughout #Minnesota and to some surrounding states as long as an approved volunteer can get there to conduct a home visit. No transport -- you MUST meet Dolly in person." To adopt Dolly, please email [email protected] to apply! ❤️ #seniordog #mamadog #nomore #adoptdontshop

DUMONT, NJ: Oh how precious! Henry is a very gentle boy who is estimated to be around 11 years old. He is bigger than he appears in photos (he weighs about 25 pounds), but is an overall petite fella with a very progressed case of arthritis. (It works!) 💌💌💌 @clawsadopt wrote, 'Henry was given up by his family in August because they had to move into a new place where no pets are allowed. It seems that they took very good care of him while they had him. He was taken to his vet regularly and, upon joining us at CLAWS, was also taken to our vet where he was given a pretty clean bill of health, aside from some bad arthritis.

Henry is a very special boy who has the most sweet demeanor of any senior dog we’ve seen in a while. We think he may be a #foxterrier/ #plotthound mixed breed, though that’s only a guess.
Henry is indifferent around other animals (cats and dogs) and he is sweet near children. He will let anyone touch him or pick him up. He hardly makes a peep at home and doesn’t bark at all. We would really like for Henry to be adopted by someone or by a family that has a more calm household, since he is not very active and would probably prefer to live his senior years in a quieter household. While that is what we think is best for Henry, we will consider all applications because he would truly do well in any home.
He’s neutered and currently up to date on all of his shots and even had a dental cleaning done in December of 2017.

We’re in #BergenCounty, #NJ and will adopt to anyone who is willing to come meet Henry. We do not typically like to put dogs on a plane, though, so they would need to be driving distance.” To adopt Henry, please email [email protected] to apply! ❤️ #seniordog #newjersey #adoptme #adoptdontshop

He was adopted once, but returned because he couldn't do their stairs. And has had no other adoption interest since. Coal is ready to move on & into a forever home but it's been really tough finding any love! He needs new people to go slow at first since he can startle, but he truly enjoys companionship and would love a quiet home to settle in to for all the rest of life. A place to call home...forever! PLEASE SHARE! 💚💚 PupStarz Rescue wrote, "Coal, a 13-year old, 25-pound Labrador/ terrier mix is a lot like your favorite pair of old, broken-in shoes: cozy, comfy and irreplaceable. Coal has been around the block so to speak, and guess what? He STILL loves to go around the block! Leash this fella up and he'll excitedly accompany you on a stroll through the 'hood, sniffing and greeting creatures along the way!

At home, Coal is content to sit with you on the couch (by invitation only!) or find a soft warm dog bed to plop down on. He is not an overly cuddly dog and he enjoys his own space. He'll come to you to be pet but he's not going to be the dog who is jumping in your lap. He also cannot be picked up and he needs to learn to trust you. His current foster keeps his harness on always (to avoid over-handling him). Whoever had him previously was not nice to him. :( Coal is housebroken...yay!..and pad-trained too...double yay! He hardly barks, sleeps through the night, can co-exist with other respectful dogs and isn't much of a shedder.

Coal has a sensitive stomach and is on metronidazole for it daily and a prescription diet. (The medication is relatively cheap and his adoption comes with one year's supply!) We prefer not to adopt Coal in the city environment. In rural/suburban areas he is much better. Coal needs someone with patience who wants to give an older dog a home." After waiting in a boarding faciltiy for an entire year, 12 year old Jasmine got ADOPTED!!! 🌼🌻 Jasmine and her former human had to part ways when they fled an abusive relationship. Jasmine was brought to Green Paws daycare & boarding facility in Grand Rapids, MI with high hopes that she wouldn't be there too long - Green Paws facilitates many successful adoptions! Nobody thought she'd be there for an entire year, but sadly Jasmine's age made her "undesirable" to all adopters. ☹️ That is, all except for one person -- Deb! After losing her beloved senior a year prior, Deb had been searching for the right dog to cherish. When she stumbled across Jasmine's posting...well, fate took over!
Deb wrote, "I am so happy to have found Jasmine. She is just amazing and perfect for me right now. I have been looking for about a year, since I lost my last senior lady Ireland, whom I still miss dearly. But I knew she would want me to find another special dog. And the seniors have a special place in my heart.

I have met several dogs in the past year and I have been following your site for a few months. But they always seemed to be just beyond my reach, out of state. But when I saw Jasmine's picture and saw she was in Grand Rapids, my heart literally jumped! Glad for you to post adoption update. When I first commented interest in Jasmine, I got a lot of support from other followers encouraging me, most whom I did not even know. That was really helpful in moving me to meet Jasmine and was so very worth it!!! My friend helped me go to meet her at Green Paws and I fell in love with her sweetness and knew in my heart she was finally the one. I had her for the two week trial and told her she was a 'keeper' from day one. Jasmine is so sweet and so smart and so gentle and I couldn't ask for a better match." ❤️ #seniordog #foreverloved #adoptdontshop

Even if that means landing in a shelter as a super-senior! Solomon will be much better off once he’s in a forever home, but in the meantime he is being a total gentleman despite his crummy circumstances. What a love bug! PLEASE SHARE to help Solomon find a forever home!! 💛🧡💛 @caresclarksdale wrote, "Solomon mysteriously appeared at CARES several weeks ago. We found him lying in a puddle lapping up the rain water, which he seemed to be thoroughly enjoying. He’s coming up on being at our shelter for an entire month.
Solomon is a little clumsy, and it’s hard for him to balance on our slick floors, so he gets very excited to go on walks outside. He is good with other dogs as long as they are tolerant of him sniffing them over tail to nose, since he can’t see that well. He is kennel mates with another elderly resident, and he’s a great roommate! He’s a lounger and enjoys relaxing on a soft bed over playing. He’s been a perfect gentleman at our shelter. We are falling more in love with him each day and we would love to see Solomon off of our slick shelter floors and in a real home.
At his vet exam he received an overall clean bill of health. Solomon was aged at 13 years old and weighs 63 pounds. He has cataracts in both eyes and cannot hear. His internal organs looked good! He’s going to need joint supplements twice a day for his arthritis. (We have him on Glucosomine right now.) We will consider any home for Solomon regardless of location as long as logistics can be arranged. We transport regularly to shelters in the Northeast. His adoption includes all vaccinations, deworming and microchip." To adopt Solomon, please email [email protected] with any questions or to request an application.

Nani was with her owner since she was a tiny puppy, but her owner's illness made it impossible to care for Nani anymore. Gentle Nani has been at the shelter almost 5 months now and it's wearing on her spirit. She's depressed, she's frustrated, and she's lonely. And because she's considered to be a middle-aged, "middle of the road" dog...everyone is passing her by. PLEASE SHARE! 👑👑 @sfanimalcareandcontrol wrote, "Nani has been with us since April 17, 2018. Nani is the sweetest, silliest, most loving #velvethippo. Her coat is so soft and she loves nothing more than curling up on the couch with one of her human friends. She is very mellow and low key, but does enjoy a brief zoom with her toys from time to time.
Because Nani has been living in a kennel for so long, she is getting depressed and starting to decline. She is a little bit leash reactive to dogs now and has started barking at passerby- it doesn’t really entice anyone to stop and get to know her. We had our big Clear The Shelters event and no one even looked at her. We have reached out to every rescue we can, and no one is interested in pulling our 'fat, middle aged' pittie girl - even though we think she’s perfect. We put a couch in her kennel and decorated the walls to make it more homey, but it’s not the same as having a family.
Nani doesn’t jump and is very, very gentle. She’s a great leash walker and doesn’t pull. Nani is also very housetrained. At this time, we think it would be best for Nani to go home to a family where she could be the only dog in the home. She needs time to decompress from shelter life before she’s ready to socialize with other dogs again. We cat tested Nani and she passed today. She was interested in the cat, but moseyed on with a little encouragement. We think she could live with cats if it were managed.

Adoptions must be done in person, and all family members must be present for a meet and greet." To adopt Nani, please email [email protected] with any questions. Please include ID # A329155.

From rough patches to lush grasses...10 year old Etta got ADOPTED!! 💚💚💚 Etta was once left abandoned on the side of the road and in rough shape. She is diabetic and #blind. She's persevered through many rough patches in her life and it's time she deserves to live the lush life! Thanks to her new mom Suzanne, Etta's day have instantly gotten brighter. She's even pursuing surgery to restore Etta's sight! This little lady is one lucky pup!! Suzanne wrote, "I adopted Miss Etta, the little #diabetic, blind Chihuahua who you posted on August 3rd. She is a treasure and I absolutely adore her.

Etta is the essence of gentleness and sweetness. I believe dogs have these divine qualities in ways that humans can only dream of having. I have yet to hear her bark or cry. She comes to work with me everyday and has quickly become our company 'mascot' and therapy dog. People drop by my office throughout the day to hold her and get some lovin'. She will cuddle up in anyone’s arms.
At my house, she has quickly bonded with my two older labs. They seem to understand that Etta can’t see and she needs space. Dogs are just so intuitive. The Ophthalmologist did a comprehensive exam of her eyes and he is confident that the surgery will be successful. Her cataracts were caused by her diabetes and we have caught it early enough that her eyes are still soft and treatable.
I hope to adopt many, many more and to be an advocate for them all of my life." ❤️ #seniordog #adopted #happilyeverafter

ADOPTED!! 🐾🤗❤️😍 We'll get right to their amazing adoption story from their new family, but this is a true miracle for bonded buddies Jill and her pal Jake (now Jack). Five years in a very long time to spend in a shelter, but they've settled in to their new home as if they've been there forever! A huge thanks to their new humans. And also to @bornfreepetshelter for standing by them for so long!
Becky (@wildruggedrose) writes, "They are WONDERFUL. Jack is coming out of his shell more and more every day, and Jill is quite honestly one of the most joyful dogs I’ve ever met.
Honestly, I was nervous about taking on two dogs because we never had before! But I had seen Jack (Jake) & Jill’s man posts on SSD and they pulled at my heart every time. We lost our last senior rescue a couple weeks ago, and these nuggets were posted AGAIN that same week - which I took as fate. So I showed my husband, who was immediately on board, and we just never looked back.
They’re both big snugglers, and will push their whole bodies into us when we sit down - which we love! They’re definitely Velcro dogs, and just so happy to be included in daily activities. And they’ve started an exercise program! We go on little walks every day and are building them up to be able to explore more and more.
They’ve both fit into our lives so seemlessly and perfectly that it feels like a match in heaven. We’ve said every night so incredibly thankful we are to have found them, and how happy we are to have added them to our family. They’re our little chunkmuffin nuggets (excuse the baby talk) and we love them very much." ❤️ #seniordog #bonded #adopted #thegoodlife #adoptdontshop

PLEASE SHARE! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Grant's foster wrote, "Grant is the most affectionate dog I’ve ever fostered! He loves his people with all his heart – if you want a snuggle partner, Grant is the right dog for you. Grant is blind due to cataracts; however, has no problems getting around his home once he gets the lay of the land – he can jump on to a couch without any fear or issues. He is also good on a leash and navigates his daily walks very well.

Because of his blindness, he gets scared when new people come into his home, which can lead to aggressive behavior. He’s usually fine meeting new people elsewhere, but this behavior can often be seen in ‘his’ home. He is muzzle-trained, which works well, and we are working on his 'stranger danger'.' Grant is a very smart pup and has made lots of progress! He needs an adopter who is committed to giving him structure and continuing his training. Your dedication will be rewarded by endless snuggles and unconditional love! Grant needs someone to assure him the world is a safe place. And although the staff has placed her in a quieter area, Fawn is really struggling at the shelter. She is quiet and unassuming and she deserves so much better for this vulnerable stage of her life. PLEASE SHARE!! 🦌
A shelter volunteer wrote, "Fawn is a very quiet lady. She is a 12 year old senior who was turned into a noisy busy shelter. Her former owners didn't want her after 12 years because she was too much trouble. The staff has made her as comfortable as possible, but you can tell she does not belong in a shelter environment.
Fawn has a great disposition. But she acts lost and sad. She is responsive to your voice, and has turned to me when I call her name. She walks closely beside you on a leash. She will just sit in her kennel, which is away from the really noisy crowded adoption rows because the staff has tried to protect her as much as possible from too much stress.

Fawn is healthy as far as we know. She has also heartworm negative. Her adoption fee is $30.00 which includes a spay/neuter, deworming, initial vaccinations, and a vet wellness coupon to a local vet. The shelter does help in transporting but it is usually done as part of a team effort or in 'legs.' Fawn has done well with other dogs at the shelter - she mainly just ignored them. With the proper environment and time, she may come around to becoming more active. Right now she is trying to adjust to a new world. We would love to see her in a home where a new family or a companion can help her feel safe and secure again, and live out her life with love and peace." He may be 100 years old...but little Simon is our tiny trooper! 💪🏽 Over the course of the last year Simon’s vision has declined. We believe he sees light and dark, at best. In more recent months, the ‘side effect’ of this for Simon is that it caused him to become extremely sensitive and anxious to noises. His hearing is still impeccable (I swear he can hear my keys jingling from down the block!) which means loud “clanks and clangs” and similar sounds became very scary to Simon. For example, even noises like setting down a metal dinner bowl on the floor - if it clanked too loudly it sent him running under the couch. And then he wouldn’t eat for the rest of the day. 😢 (I quickly switched him to a plastic plate which makes no noise. And made other such adjustments in his life, of course.) We tried several options to help Simon’s new anxiety, including the popular & highly recommended CBD oil. But Simon was spending more and more time under the couch without much improvement. It was heartbreaking, especially because - aside from his vision loss - he’s an overall healthy dog. He’s just very old! So after about a month of seeing Simon this way, I decided to talk to the vet about what we can do. We talked about options; I was fearful of choosing something that would change his personality. Ultimately, we decided upon “doggy Prozac” for Simon’s needs - with the full understanding that each dog reacts to it differently and it’s not a quick fix.
But I am so happy to say that after two months of medication, Simon has become much more relaxed. There is a noticeable difference in his quality of life. He’s calmer. These days Simon can be seen ON the couch much more than he is under! His core personality hasn’t changed a bit - he still snarks at his fur sister Sara (🙄), he still barks ferociously at visitors (🙈), & Mama is still his #1!! Ultimately, I know my little old man is happy. 😁

The aging process can be tricky to navigate. This is what has worked for Simon - and us - but may not work for every dog. And working through seniorhood changes with your beloved old dog is simply part of the journey. It’s their security that makes all the difference. Age is a privilege! 🙃

She's a tripod who found her way to the local fire department and spent some time there before officially becoming under the care of a rescue. (Before you ask, Jilly couldn't take up residency with the fire department, like some dogs do.) She is now in boarding and feeling pretty depressed about it. She'd love for a true home - one without other dogs, but she's totally cool with cats! Do you have a place in your heart for beautiful Jilly Bean? PLEASE SHARE! 🍬🍬🍬 @adoptagolden_bham wrote, "Jilly was a stray who took up with a local fire department.
Jilly weighs a tiny 39 pounds of cute. She's a #tripod; her left rear leg was amputated some time ago. She's skinny and her fur coat needs some help; nothing that a few nutritious square meals won't fix after a while.
Jilly would rather be your only loving dog at home as she must have had to protect herself in the past. However, during her cat test we couldn’t even get her to acknowledge the cat! She deserves a nice owner and a nice home and a really good bed. So are you the one to make Jilly the happiest girl in the world? She hopes so; she's looking for you. Please make her dreams come true.
We don’t transport; adopters must come to #Birmingham." To adopt Jilly, please email [email protected] with any questions or to submit an application. ❤️ #seniordog #golden #adoptme #alabama #adoptdontshop

Yes, please! 9 year old Molly Ivins got ADOPTED!! 💃🏻🕺🏽 Senior adoption is simply the greatest (we may biased 😜), but it's even greater when it benefits both the newly adopted dog AND the resident dog. As is the case with Molly and her new brother Henry. These two rescue dogs are lucky to have landed one awesome family!! 💖

Lindsey wrote, "Molly is doing great and we feel so lucky to have adopted her. Molly has quickly become the perfect companion for our six year old beagle Henry who we adopted last year. Henry can be a bit shy around other dogs at first, but Molly has uncovered this whole new playful side of Henry. It’s almost like we have two brand new dogs!
We adopted Henry from North Shore Animal League in Long Island. Henry thrives outside when we take him on walks in the park, but at the dog park he becomes super mellow and every dog (male and female) would try to exert their dominance over him. Over the past year, Henry has been able to spend some time getting to know my parents' two Boston Terriers (ages 6 and 11) up in Connecticut. We noticed how much he would play with them, and how much he thrived with their companionship. We realized that it just takes some time for him to warm up to other dogs and had a hunch that he would do well with a more mature dog in the house. That's when we decided to start looking through local rescues. Once we had Henry and Molly meet at a @badassbrooklyn adoption event, we immediately saw that they had a similar energy and were getting along on a walk quite easily. After that, we decided that Molly and Henry belonged together and it's been so wonderful to see how both of their personalities have evolved over these past few weeks. They are the sweetest pups together and we feel so lucky to have Molly in the pack now." ❤️ #seniordog #adopted #twototango #love #adoptdontshop

HOUSTON, TX: Could you use a daily boost of confidence? 7 year old Gwen is ready to dole it out to you in bucket loads! This adoptable gal is living at an overcrowded shelter with hundreds of other adoptable dogs - and Gwenny has been there the longest. 😔 This pretty lady is spoken of so highly by everyone at the shelter, yet she day after day she is lost in the crowd. Gwen needs a whole lot of help getting attention right now, something she is very much struggling to get. PLEASE SHARE! 💖

A shelter volunteer wrote, "Gwen is our longest term dog, intake date of 3/27/18. When Gwen first arrived she had a large mass on one of her nipples and our wonderful shelter vet removed it, it was benign.

Gwen is a volunteer and employee favorite because she’s simply the biggest love bug you’ll meet. She would make the darkest days bright. Her smile is contagious, her disposition delightful and her amazing companionship is simply unmatched! She’s been lucky enough to break away on a 'foster for a day' program that MCAS runs, and the person who took her home had rave reviews: Excellent house manners, laid back and loving- loved snuggling and watching TV. You’d feel pretty much on top of the world every day with a dog like her adoring you, and you adoring her back for how much she adores you! It’s truly awesome how affectionate she is with her human friends.
Gwen CANNOT be around cats. And she would be best as an only dog (if somehow we could work out a local meet and greet at an adoption event we’d definitely try, but they don’t allow it at the shelter). And that puts the pressure on Gwen in an overcrowded shelter when she needs to be kenneled alone and we are low on space.
Gwen is heartworm positive. Her treatment is fully sponsored by @theheartwormfoundation which we are so thankful for in our community. She is spayed, up to date on shots and ready for a long term commitment. She would boost anyone’s confidence with her adoration for them! Hell, we could ALL use a Gwen in our lives!” To adopt Gwen, please email [email protected] to apply. Be sure to include animal ID # A300412.

And oh how much farther he deserves to go!! 8 year old adoptable Cisco is looking for a family who will know what a gem they have found in his companionship. Cisco was once a very neglected, unloved soul. He's always been a sweetheart, but physically he struggled from his neglect. Cisco has made a huge recovery this past year and has been patiently waiting for a forever family of his own. PLEASE SHARE! ✨✨✨ @citydogsrescue wrote, "Cisco came into our rescue over a year ago skinny, bloated with worms, and covered in mange. He is now a spry, healthy senior! His 'before' pics are pretty heartbreaking [swipe for more photos] but he's doing so well in foster care! He just needs an adopter!
Cisco is a sweet, loving dog who will make a wonderful companion. We honestly can't figure out why he hasn't been adopted yet. He loves to be near his people, has impeccable house manners, and is fully house-trained. He can be left loose in your home without worry and only needs a few walks a day and some playtime with his toys to be a happy boy. He is very gentle and loves to give kisses! He also adores kids! He is very affectionate with kids and loves to lick them.
Cisco walks well on a leash without pulling. He is reactive on leash (barks and lunges), but as long as the other dog(s) are not aggressive, he really enjoys being around other dogs. It takes about 30 min of side by side walking on leash to get him to a point where he is okay with another dog. He is being fostered in a city neighborhood and does fine. And he's great with other dogs AFTER a controlled introduction.

City Dogs Rescue is a #WashingtonDC based non-profit rescue. We adopt out dogs to homes in #DC, #VA, and #MD." To adopt Cisco, please email [email protected] with questions or to request an application! ❤️ #seniordog

This 10 year old beauty has lived her ENTIRE LIFE at the shelter. Read that again - Carly has lived for 10 YEARS in the shelter!! This is also Carly's 3rd post on SSD. She very much enjoys human companionship, belly rubs, and learning new tricks with anyone who will take the time to teach her. The shelter environment may be what Carly is familiar with, but a human of her own who will love her is what Carly truly wants. PLEASE SHARE! 😫

Calhoun County Humane Society, "Carly is a senior with a sparkling personality! She is a lover of people, belly rubs, special treats, sunbaths, and just a little bit of rabble-rousing. She has never in her life lived in a home. But if there is a home for her, we know SSD can help find it. So let's just do this!

We will never really know why Carly has spent her entire 10 years of life at the shelter.

(Cats just don't exist to her. Even the shelter property's feral cat who loooooves to stalk dogs being walked doesn't get a rise outta her.) However, Carly is a fickle girlie when it comes to dog friends. She would rather not have another female dog around. And it seems the older she gets, the younger she likes her doggy-men (under 2 years old!). Yup, she's a cougar. Someone needs to keep the young 'uns on their toes!

Carly weighs 60lbs and is in dire need of a diet. She has no health issues. She has little stiffness, & the weight loss will help.

Because she is dog selective, a shelter meet-and-greet is absolutely required if there is another dog in the home." To adopt Carly, please email [email protected] to submit an application!

But Frankie is taking it all in stride. In May, just before his second adoptiversary, Frank’s back legs started to give out on him. So we made a few minor adjustments to make things a bit easier on the little guy. Frank got some cute shoes that give him more traction on the wood floors, and we added a set of steps to help him get into our bed and another to get him up on the couch. We even found a way to continue our family’s tradition of hiking Colorado’s highest peaks on the 4th of July and hauled 35lbs of heeler to the summit of Redcloud Peak in a backpack. Frank’s legs might not work so well anymore, but he still has a lot of love to give and a lot of life to live.
One of Frankie’s cousins named Tate crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Friday. Tate was adopted as a 10-11 year old senior 4 years ago from a friend who couldn’t care for her. Tate was a cranky old lady with huge ears and a hidden, sweet disposition. She - along with SSD - helped open our hearts to adopting our own senior pup.
We just got Frank some new socks that ride a bit higher to protect his knees from getting sores. I think he looks like a little hipster. -Ellen" ❤️ #seniordog #aginggracefully #soloved #adoptdontshop

This bonded mom-and-son sure know how to lay on "the cute" thick! Unfortunately, they've have no adoption interest. Probably because they must be adopted together, but it would absolutely devastate Lucky and Glock to be apart from each other after a lifetime together. Plus, it would be heartbreaking to leave one of them behind at the shelter alone without the other. Lucky and Glock most certainly could use your help in getting their story out. PLEASE SHARE! 🐶🐶 A shelter volunteer wrote, "This mother and son duo are a bonded pair. They have always lived together and it would break their hearts to separate them. Glock, a male 8 year old Rottweiler/pit bull mix, is a strong boy, eager to walk as far as you’re willing to go. And he likes everybody he’s met at the shelter. Lucky, a female pit bull mix, is 11 and content to amble more slowly and then hang out with us in the sun. Whoever is lucky enough (pun intended) to adopt this duo is in for twice the love, cuddles, kisses, desire and most of all loyalty.

Lucky had some skin issues when she first came in and was a very patient girl during the several weeks when she needed daily baths. She was also well-behaved on trips to a specialist in Portland. Both dogs are very popular with the volunteers and we’re all hoping to find them a great home where they can spend their senior years together. As one volunteer says, 'They are pretty darn easy and just want to hang out. And they love their walks.' Glock is selective about other dogs, but Lucky seems to get along with most, as far as we can tell. If there are other dogs in the house, they will have to meet at the shelter.
They will need a fully fenced yard. The shelter requires all members of the household to meet prospective adoptees. We do home checks, but for those of you who live outside of the county, you’ll simply need to bring photos of your home, yard, and fence." To adopt Lucky and Glock, please email [email protected] to apply!

Choco and Cindie are an old married couple who once found themselves homeless after their former owner had been deployed. Back when they were looking for a home at @luvabledogrescue shelter, these two lovebirds are so cute that many people shared their story online and they received a TON of media exposure. They even had an adorable #pitbullflowerpower photoshoot with @sophiegamand! 🐶🌼 But sadly, time and time again, any adoption leads that did come through would turn out to be dead ends. Nothing solid ever came through. And it was quite the frustrating search for a new home. ☹️ But!! Then one day that ONE special person turned up! Niq had recently lost his senior pittie and he was devastated. After his senior pup’s passing, Niq, who had been a follower of @luvabledogrescue for years, hopped on the shelter's website, saw the duo's profile & knew immediately that they could all help each other. Niq was the “something solid” that Choco and Cindie were waiting for! And the rest is history... 📖

Niq updates, "Choco and Cindie have completely settled in and taken over! 😂😂While they are still very much a bonded pair, they have definitely found independence since being home. Choco is incredibly sensitive and seeks affection where ever there’s a hand to pet him! I have only heard him bark maybe 2-3 times, he’s very reserved like that. Cindie is the independent confident one. She lets you know when it’s time to be up, when it’s time to go out and most importantly...when she’s hungry! I love how they have become individuals, while still having a deep love for each other.

As far as adopting these two, it has been extremely easy. The only real difficulties we’ve had would be cleaning up after them, they shed A LOT! If people are used to only one dog, here are some things you may not have realized: you will buy a lot of food, you will pick up a lot of 💩 and you will have double the expenses...which can get expensive, so it’s a decision that needs to be thoroughly thought out. All this aside; these two have been great! I think that in the right situation, a bonded pair can grow to become confident individuals while still being bonded." ❤️ #seniordogs #married

LONG ISLAND, NY: We all have preferences when it comes to physical touch, and we should allow dogs to have the same freedom of preferences. Coal is sensitive when it comes to being "handled" and he prefers relationships with a reasonable amount personal space. Don't be misled, Coal truly wants companionship! And his perfect match will be with a human who has a less touchy-touch style, too. His perfect match will be with someone who prefers to sit NEXT to each other rather than on top of each other. There is definitely someone out there for cute Coal! PLEASE SHARE! 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 PupStarz Rescue wrote, "Coal, a 13-year old, 25-pound Labrador/ terrier mix is a lot like your favorite pair of old, broken-in shoes: cozy, comfy and irreplaceable.

Sometimes when you go to leash him and if you are too fast he will get scared and snap. He's gotten a lot better with time, but we think this is going to be his best. Whoever had him previously was not nice to him. 😢 Coal is housebroken...yay!..and pad-trained too...double yay! He hardly barks, sleeps through the night, can co-exist with other respectful dogs and isn't much of a shedder.
We prefer not to adopt Coal in the city environment. In rural/suburban areas he is much better. Coal needs someone with patience who wants to give an older dog a home." Coal MUST be adopted in person. No transport.

"Hello Susie’s Senior Dogs,

We already had two pups, Nona, a 6 year old Maltese, and Ella, a 5 year old Beagle. After following your journey with Susie, then Susie and Simon, and then Simon and Sara... I constantly seeded the idea of a 3rd pup, a senior, with my husband Jan. After much ado, we are so excited for Spunky to join our pack.
Spunky is a 16-17 year old Chihuahua boy whose owners brought him to the MSPCA to be euthanized because he peed inside the house. The awesome folks there saw how healthy and full of life he was and refused to let that happen. Within a week he’d been neutered, had a dental, several cysts and fatty lipomas removed... and he was in my arms. He still looks a bit like Frankendoggie due to all his stitches (leg, chest, and head)... what a trooper! He and his the girls acclimated quickly, but it became clear that Spunky is deaf! So, we are learning sign language and he’s doing really well. He’s such an angel, cuddle mush, wobble bottom.
I don’t know how long he’ll be with us, but we will be spoiling him rotten with love, treats, and his favorite: walks. He gets around the neighborhood 2-3 times a day, it’s amazing at his age he just can’t get enough! We are currently compiling a 'Spucket List' of things Spunky probably hasn’t done that we’ll do together! There will be no turning back from this now, we’ll be adopting seniors for life.

Love, Sarah, Jan, Nona, Ella, and Spunky" ❤️ #seniordog #adoption #happytail

He was hoping this was the summer he'd finally find his forever family, and maybe even squeeze in a little vacation together (or even a simple summer BBQ!) before the season was over. But, sadly, this boy still hasn't received any inquires. Nemo is a lover of all people and he is friendly with other dogs. He was rescued over 2 years ago from crummy humans and has waited patiently to retire in style. PLEASE SHARE! 🍒🍅🍉 @shawpitbullrescue wrote, "Nemo was rescued in March of 2016 and has been looking for a home ever since. Nemo loves his friends at Shaw PBR, but what he really wants is a home to live out his golden years in. There is a shortage of responsible pet owners in the area, and the nearest town has a law designating ALL pit bulls as 'dangerous dogs' [ #eyeroll], which really discourages people from adopting them and also prevents us from holding adoption events. It also means the public shelter euthanizes nearly all pit-bull type dogs on intake.

Nemo is a gentle soul who enjoys the finer things in life, particularly the edible things! He specifically requested a home where he will be able to participate in any summer BBQ festivities, so we said we’d do our best. 😉

Our veterinarian believes Nemo is about 8 years old. He loves to spend time with people, including kids, and have his belly rubbed. And he gets along with other dogs (but is a bit jealous when he tires and wants to keep his toys to himself, lol). We are unsure about cats.

Nemo weighs about 55 lbs and he is neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative, and up-to date on all vaccinations. Adopters will receive his vet records, a collar and leash, 30 days of pet insurance, and plenty of post-adoption support! Please help us find Nemo his forever family – maybe it’s you!

Adoption radius is up to adopter. We do require meet & greets with potential adopters (and their other dogs)." To adopt Nemo, please email [email protected] to apply! ❤️ #seniordog #pitbull #adoptme #adoptdontshop

Beans was surrendered back to the shelter last December without a given reason. He had been adopted as a much younger dog and now that he’s back at the shelter with his new senior status on his kennel card...well, folks just keep moving and walk on by when they see his age. Poor Beans. He’s a good guy who deserves a great family. And he’s ready to move right in! PLEASE SHARE! 🐑🐑 @heschatt wrote, "Y’all, this is Beans. He was adopted from us as a youngster in December of 2011 and returned in December 2017. Beans is the first guy you see when you walk through the shelter and he’s always got a smile on his face and a slightly titled head in anticipation of ‘are they the ones? Are they gonna get me out?’ His resilience to be here 8 months is impressive, yet it makes us sad.
Beans is now 8 years old and quite the seasoned gentle-dog. And let’s talk about gentle, this smiling fella really, really loves kids. He’s big, yes, but he will absolutely make room for you on the couch. He will not knock over your kiddos. He can happily exist around other doggos (maybe he won’t engage in big time play, but he doesn’t mind them). He gets along fine with all the dogs we've had him around at the shelter. And, he does enjoy playgroup. He joins in the larger, multiple-dog playgroups as well. He would do best in a cat-free home (cats are about the only thing that'll get this boy excitable). Beans enjoys laying in the sunshine. He’s not gonna try to crawl in your lap, but he will sit next to you and smile at you all day long. Maybe all night, too.
Since Beans is a senior, his adoption fee is only $50. Adopters need to fill out an adoption application to be approved by staff. We prefer you meet the dog in person prior to adopt, but we've made exceptions in the past and transport is possible, with help, to the right home!" Marley is 9 years old and prior to coming into rescue 10 months ago he only knew a life of abuse and neglect. He's bounced between foster homes and hasn't been able to put his roots down, so to speak. He can be fearful of men and other dogs, and he is looking to be the only pet at home. He can definitely live with male humans if they will simply give him time to trust he will never-ever be hurt again. Once that happens, Marley boy blooms! PLEASE SHARE! 🌹

@fetchwirescue wrote, "Marley is a Wisconsin native and was taken from a case of neglect. He will need to be the only dog in the house (due to a rough past) and will take a little extra time to warm up to male humans. One week has made an incredible difference in his ability to trust his new foster dad. It's hard to tell Marley is 10 years old since he enjoys a 3/4 mile run or long walk each morning. Once the run is over, he chows down on some kibble and hits the dog bed/couch for nap time.
Marley has no interest in toys, bones or most treats. He is completely obsessed with dental chews, strawberries and loves to give kisses! He does best on walks with verbal reassurance from his humans when another dog is present or a slight run to distract him. Thunderstorms do not bother him but a good fire truck siren might bring out the Beagle howl! Marley can be left during the work day and is potty trained. He weighs 45 pounds.

Marley sleeps on the floor near his foster's bed each night. He lived in a previous foster home with four kids ages 11-21 years old but would prefer a low key, quiet home. All around, Marley just wants to please his humans. He respects dinner time and will not beg for food at the table.

She lost her vision, she lost her hearing, and she lost her former family. But 12 year old Tilly found herself a brand new life! Tilly got ADOPTED! 😍

We don't know the reason why, but Tilly was originally surrendered to the public shelter several months back. She was pulled into the care of @MaeDayRescue where she received vet care and foster care, but Tilly was without any adoption interest. However, as soon as Carla saw Tilly's SSD Instagram post, she was instantly smitten! All it takes is one special person. Carla has lots of love to give the seniors who have come into her life and Tilly is one #luckylady to have landed a spot in her home!
Carla wrote, "Tilly is settling in nicely with her new big brother Truman the dog (12) and lil' sister Evie the cat (4). She's already got her favorite napping spots and enjoys roaming around in the yard.

Tilly is my second senior adoption. Patches joined our family 2-3 years ago when his owner passed away. Sadly, he passed away this past April. He was such a sweet and gentle dog and brought so much joy and happiness to our lives and others. I wish he had been with us longer, but we're grateful for the time we did get to have with the old boy." ❤️ #seniordog #thegoodlife #adopted #adoption #adoptdontshop

Fausto needs BIG LOVE! This 140 pound lap dog is in search of an adopter who enjoys all things big-and-goofy. Fausto will gently lay his big head in your lap, simply seeking genuine friendship. And his only concern in life is how happy he can make you. Fausto is creeping up on his final chapter of life and we hope we can help him make it the best chapter of his life. PLEASE SHARE!! 🐘

@pasados Safe Haven wrote, "Fausto came to us from a severe neglect and starvation case, but now weighs a whopping 140 pounds. He is a 7ish year old #NeapolitanMastiff. Beneath his regal bearing, lies the soul of a real goofball.
When you visit Fausto's cabin, he'll place his head right by yours for some scratches or just lay with his head right in your lap. Who says big dogs can’t be lap dogs? Fausto is quick to wag his tail in appreciation of life’s finer things: a big drink of cool water, rump scratches, and seeing friends.
A home with no other pets would be best for Fausto, for now. He's very friendly and approachable on leash, human or dog! He walks well beside his person and doesn't pull on the leash, even when another dog is coming past. He has gone on multiple parallel walks with other dogs and has never had any issues. He definitely has potential to live with other dogs in the future, given training and a committed owner who has the capability to separate when needed.

Medically, Fausto is healthy. But he does get weekly ear cleanings and monthly medicated baths. We also soak his feet twice a week to help with inflammation he gets in the pads. He is neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated.

Anyone interested in adopting or fostering would need to complete the adoption questionnaire and visit the sanctuary in person. Fausto is such a sweetheart who has overcome so much and deserve to live out his last days surrounded by love." To adopt Fausto, please email [email protected] with any questions or to apply!

Fausto is living at Pasado's Safe Haven located in Monroe, WA. ❤️ #seniordog #gentlegiant #lapdog #adoption #adoptdontshop

For much of his life, Winston lived in a really bad hoarding situation. He has also only lived outdoors. Winston is a shy because he's never had much exposure to all the fun things that life has to offer, but he is VERY sweet and kind. Winston has never known "the good life" or the peace and security of being part of a family. He doesn't know what it feels like to be truly loved! Winston deserves so much more than he's ever known. PLEASE SHARE! 🏡💕 Pickens County Animal Shelter wrote, "Winston is an approximately 10 year old, neutered #lab mix who has resided at the shelter for the last two years in an outdoor pen. Winston came out of a hoarding situation that got busted by animal control and the sheriff department.

Winston is really laid back and sweet. He can be shy at first but will warm up to you. He does not like a collar or leash, and this seems to be a major challenge for him. He has never had a dog collar or a leash put on him, he was able to roam at his former owner's house. So a nice big fenced in back yard would be great for Winston.

Winston loves having a female dog companion, one who is not dominant. He probably wouldn't be good with cats or male dogs. Despite his age, this fella is quite playful with his roomie, likes his treats and the back of his ears scratched. He likes to snuggle with them as I caught the two of them in the same igloo peaking out at me one day.

The shelter's adoption policy is to come in and fill out an application at the shelter. Volunteers can help transport a couple hours away. Otherwise, we work on a 'skeleton crew' and we don't have any way to transport further." To adopt Winston, please email the shelter's adoption coordinator, Nicole, at [email protected] to apply!

This handsome senior pup has been at the shelter for a long time - he was waiting for his legal case to be resolved after a severe hoarding situation. Jax had some adoption interest, but everyone has fallen off the radar for reasons unknown. And Jax is always left hanging. This gentle boy just wants to get out of the shelter and into a loving home once and for all. PLEASE SHARE! 🤷🏼‍♂️ @hvhsny wrote, "The people who were in contact about Jax no longer seem interested as they have not gotten back to us for awhile. Jax is approximately 7 years old. We seized a large group of #huskies in May 2017 from a hoarder. There were 22 live huskies in total. Many of been adopted, but we do not have a high demand and we've been having a very difficult time trying to get Jax placement. We have had them for one year (due to legal reasons, we were recently awarded 'ownership' of the dogs and not allowed to adopt them until they officially became ours) and we still have 10 of them to place.

Jax has a great personality. He is very kind and gentle, loves attention, and has become a favorite among our volunteers. He loves being outside, but does dig (he almost dug out of his yard one day) and needs supervision when he is out. He seems to do well with mellow dogs. And anyone interested in adopting him who has a dog at home would need to bring them to meet him at our facility to make sure they get along.

Jax is in good health but has some arthritis in his hips that we are managing with gabapentin and dasuquin. He is neutered and while in our care he had his teeth cleaned and whatever teeth needed to be extracted were taken out." To adopt Jax, please email [email protected] (include "Jax" in the subject line) with any questions. Adoption application required!

From tragedy to triumph, 10 year old Rudy got ADOPTED!! 💛💛💛 Rudy's former human passed away and her death was very hard for him. Rudy was used to living a certain way, and moving to a shelter was super difficult for him. He has some special needs that didn't make him a fit for every type of home, but simply the right type of home. Thankfully, that home (and heart!) is with Sarah who saw Rudy's multiple postings on SSD and decided she had a place for special Rudy in her life. 💕

Sarah wrote, "I’m writing to update you on Rudy, the 10 year old chihuahua/corgi mix who I adopted from @PeaceableKingdom Animal Rescue after seeing him posted twice on Susie’s Senior Dogs. We are working through some anxiety that Rudy has, but it was clear he was thrilled to be back in a home as he immediately jumped on the couch to take a nap when he got to my apartment.

I honestly don't know why Rudy caught my heart they way he did- I always assumed the next dog I would adopt would be a pit bull, because I know what amazing dogs they are and how hard it can be to get them adopted. Rudy's description just sounds like he was looking for MY home- single woman, no other dogs.

I started volunteering at animal shelters when I was 14, and the senior dogs always pulled my heart the most. They were always the most confused to be in the shelter, and the most grateful for love. As a vet, I feel prepared to deal with health issues that come up. I am currently in the midst of a veterinary oncology residency, where the biggest focus of our job is maximizing quality of life, for however long that may be, so it's only natural for me to adopt a senior dog. Although Rudy seems quite spry for his age, so I'm hoping we have quite a bit of time left together!

He truly acts like a puppy with his toys- part of me doesn’t believe he’s really 14. I’m sure that with time Rudy will learn to trust again and enjoy his golden years.” ❤️ #seniordog #adopted #secondchances #adoptdontshop

KEARNEYSVILLE, WV: Handsome 9 year old Flash is the real deal. He's loyal and loving and playful, too! He thrives with a best friend! Sadly, prior to coming into rescue, Flash's spirit was bruised one too many times in his life. He sometimes worries that new people will harm him and he needs an adopter with patience, just until he warms up to you. Unfortunately, Flash has been waiting almost three years for patience to come along. (Who knew it was so hard to come by?!) Flash is crying out for help! PLEASE SHARE! 🐑

@reachout_rescue wrote, "Flash has been with us since late 2015. We’ve had him featured on our Facebook several times already but our reach is not that great. Flash is currently in boarding as we don’t have a foster for him.

Flash is looking for a special home. But he has a lot to give in return! Over the course of his life he must have met enough people who were not nice to him because he can sometimes be unsure when he meets new ones. It’s a bit tragic because Flash LOVES people. His ideal home would be one with not too many people coming and going at all times as this could be stressful for him.
There are so many ways in which Flash will reward for this patience and understanding! He’s house trained, he’s loyal, he is experienced enough NOT to chew things up around the home, and he is an outstanding playing buddy. As soon as you get out a ball Flash will go into his playing stance, waiting for you to say 'Are you ready?' When you toss it he will happily run as fast as he can to get it. After a little of this he is ready to come in and hang out with you, his human! He’s a very chill dog around the house.
Flash has been getting along with most dogs but a slow introduction is best. There’s no reason to think that he wouldn’t get along with other dogs at this point. He’s a pretty calm dog.

He does not have any health issues. Other than he’s slowing down, getting older. Our adoption area is #Maryland, southern parts of PA (including the #Philly area), northern parts of VA, & the parts of DE, WV, and NJ adjacent to Maryland.” To adopt Flash, please email [email protected] to apply! ❤️ #seniordog #adoptme #TLC

Whatever you want to call them, Lucky and Glock are mom-and-son and bonded at the hip! And - you guessed it - they NEED a home together. This is a must! It would absolutely destroy them to be separated at this stage of their lives. Lucky and Glock have always lived together and were surrendered when their owner could no longer care for them. Sometimes life doesn't always work out as we all hope or plan, and Lucky and Glock most certainly could use a stroke of good luck right now. PLEASE SHARE! 🥜

A shelter volunteer wrote, "This mother and son duo are a bonded pair.
