The Philippines will always be home to 2-time UAAP MVP Ben Mbala no matter where the game takes him ... the former La Salle star arrived in Manila for a brief visit and left last night for Seoul ... Ben said he was ready to play 1 more year for La Salle but there was talk the UAAP Board would impose the 7-year-out-of-high-school limit to disqualify him so La Salle management said if he had an offer to play elsewhere, to go ahead ... from Manila, Ben played in Mexico and France and also for the Cameroon national team in Tunisia ... he trained in Brazil with the Cameroon squad and also went to Turkey, Spain, Belgium and Italy ... Ben bought rosaries at the Vatican for his mother and grandmother in Cameroon—when he visited his hometown recently to give the rosaries, his grandmother put hers around her neck—-ever since suffering a stroke, she has not been able to leave home and go to church ... Ben has signed a contract to play for the Samsung Thunder in the Korean league this coming season ... he will play for Samsung 3 games in Tokyo and 3 games in Osaka next week then suit up for Cameroon in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in Tunisia then rejoin Samsung for a tournament in Macau before moving back to Seoul ... Ben went to La Salle to surprise the Green Archers at practice last Saturday and every day he was in town, he worked out at Paolo Rivero’s gym in San Juan ... Ben said he’ll visit Manila on breaks to cheer for the Archers in the UAAP ... Ben said now that he’s gone all over the world, he appreciates Filipino fans even more because they’re the best on the planet! Ben said he has a year left to earn his university degree and plans to finish up ... wherever he goes, Ben will be green forever ... best of luck, stay humble, invest your money wisely and know that in the Philippines, you have a family to go home to! @benmbala @dlsusports @dlsugreenarchers #archernation

A lot of confusion was created by conflicting website reports and the Philippines rejoining the Asian Games basketball competition (after withdrawing) to move to a new group so that it wasn’t clear which team Gilas will probably face in the semifinals in case coach Yeng Guiao’s squad beats South Korea in the quarterfinals. So we checked with Gilas assistant coach/chief scout Ryan Gregorio who confirmed that if and when Gilas beats South Korea on Monday, the odds-on semifinal opponent will be Iran not Chinese Taipei. The revelation caught many by surprise including Philippine sports officials in Jakarta and PBA commissioner Willie Marcial but as coach Ryan said, let’s forget about the semifinals for the moment and focus on South Korea! Today was rest day for Gilas and the team was feted by the Filipino community at the Kemang Club Villas ... coach Yeng wore a batik shirt while assistant coach Caloy Garcia gave his stamp of approval (top left) ... Here’s the lowdown on Gilas’ situation in the Asian Games. Group D standings are the Philippines 1-1, China 1-0 and Kazakhstan 0-1. China will seal pole position with a win over Kazakhstan tomorrow and the Philippines will finish #2. That means the Philippines will play Group A #1 South Korea in the knockout quarters on Aug. 27. South Korea beat Indonesia 104-65 and Mongolia 108-73 and will end the group stage eliminations against Thailand today. If the Philippines beats South Korea, it will advance to the semis likely against Chinese Taipei. If Kazakhstan beats China even by just 1 point, the Philippines will end up #1 in Group D because of the quotient system. That will put Gilas likely against Indonesia in the quarterfinals. The only way Kazakshtan will eliminate China outright is if it wins by 20 because that margin will bring Kazakhstan’s quotient to -17 and China to -18, leaving the Philippines at #1 and Kazakhstan at #2 with China out at #3 but this scenario has a 1% chance of happening. Going through South Korea in the quarters avoids a semis showdown with Iran so for Gilas, it may be the easier route. Facing South Korea will mean battling naturalized player and former PBA import Ricardo Ratliffe who’s been impressive with his new team in the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. For Gilas, coach Yeng Guiao believes a podium finish is doable. The Philippines hasn’t bagged a medal in basketball at the Asian Games in 20 years, the last was a bronze with coach Tim Cone and the Centennials in 1998 and the last gold medal came 56 years ago! Hopes are high that Cleveland Cavaliers guard Jordan Clarkson (shown driving on China’s Liu Zhixuan) will lead the Philippines back to the Asian Games medal limelight ... in his Philippine team debut, Jordan had 28 pts 5 triples 8 rebs 4 assts in Gilas’ 82-80 loss to China yesterday ... he hit 16 pts in the 3rd period but went scoreless in the 4th, battling cramps ... Jordan will have 5 days of rest to recover and erase jet lag before the quarterfinals ... Believe! #labanpilipinaspuso @pbaconnect @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @jordanclarksons @nba @cavs

The NBA has announced it will not allow Clarkson to play in Indonesia because of a long-standing agreement with FIBA! What about China’s Zhou Qi? Is he also barred from playing? What about allowing NBA players to play in the Pan American Gamea which is the Americas zone’s counterpart of the Asian Games? NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum spoke with Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano and SBP chairman emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan to explain the NBA’s decision ... What’s the logic behind the NBA rule? Why the double standard? Why discriminate against Clarkson and the Philippines? Just the same, let’s respect the NBA’s decision and thank Mr Tatum for going out of his way to speak with MVP and Secretary Cayetano—that showed the NBA listened to our appeal and gave us due recognition ... let’s also thank MVP, Secretary Cayetano, SBP and POC for taking our appeal to the highest level ... we may have lost the battle but this has certainly opened the eyes of the basketball world to revisit the NBA rule ... Mr Tatum said the only way to change the rule is if the team owners vote on a waiver and that’s impossible to do at this time with the Asian Games opening just around the corner! Let’s move and fight in the Asian Games! @samahangbasketbolngpilipinas @smartgilas @jordanclarksons
