BERLIN DOUBLES DOWN ON MERCOSUR CRITICISM: The EU-Mercosur trade agreement will not be ratified in the short term, German Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner said Tuesday, arguing “almost every” EU agriculture minister was “very, very skeptical” about the deal.
Deforestation is now a red line: Klöckner made a clear link to Brazil’s deforestation policy, arguing the clearing of forests for arable land was harming the environment and distorting competition.
Germany will put the deal on ice as long as Brazil’s government makes no efforts to rein in deforestation.
What this means: If it wasn’t clear after the comments from Merkel’s spokesman, it’s clear now: Germany has changed course on Mercosur and will not support ratification of the deal until Brazil makes more visible efforts to curb deforestation.
Since me and @adelaidecha started working as interns in the European Parliament in January, we noticed that there’s very little people aware of what Europe is doing when it comes to climate policies. What does net zero by 2050 mean? What is a carbon budget? What is the European climate law?
A lot of people heard about the ‘green deal’. But what does it actually mean? And is it enought to fight the climate crisis? Well, me and Adélaïde have been writing blogs about all the important aspects of the green deal to inform people on what it is exactly and how we can fight and push the right things.
You’ll find the link in our BIO to read all our different blogs. We’ll still be writing these untill february to keep everyone posted on what’s going on.
Please stay tuned and educated! Because it is by informing ourselves that we can fight this system and win!
Almost one week ago it was #internationalnonbinaryday and I’ve been torn with posting something or not. For me, it’s the climate crisis that should be the absolute priority since it’s threatening millions of people’s lives. Before I started my climate activism, human rights where at the core of everything I did. And it still is. I find it a responsibility to build a platform for those who can’t. So I finally decided to make a post. Whatever box you think you could put me or any non-binary person in, you won’t. And you never will. People are breaking free from the ridiculous labels we were put in, and I’m so happy to be a part of that revolution as well. 🔥
“One day a terrible fire broke out in a forest. Frightened, all the animals fled their homes and ran out of the forest. As they came to the
edge of a stream they stopped to watch the fire and they were feeling very discouraged and
powerless. They were all bemoaning the destruction of their homes. Every one of them thought
there was nothing they could do about the fire - except for one little hummingbird.
This particular hummingbird decided it would do something. It swooped into the stream and picked
up a few drops of water and went into the forest and put them on the fire. Then it went back to the
stream and did it again, and it kept going back, again and again and again. All the other animals
watched in disbelief; some tried to discourage the hummingbird with comments like, "Don't bother,
it is too much, you are too little, your wings will burn, your beak is too tiny, it’s only a drop, you
can't put out this fire."
And as the animals stood around disparaging the little bird’s efforts, the bird noticed how hopeless
and forlorn they looked. Then one of the animals shouted out and challenged the hummingbird in a
mocking voice, "What do you think you are doing?" And the hummingbird, without wasting time or losing a beat, looked back and said, "I am doing what I can."
