Fundamental of the month...Performance! Performance on stage and being audience member is an important part of being a well rounded dancer.
Dancing on stage is an outcome for all the hard work a student is pouring into their classes. Performing is learning. It teaches everything from stage etiquette, to dealing with anxiety, how to recover from mistakes, deal with pressure, and work with others. Reviewing a past performance can be a fun reward and different way to measure a student’s progress over time. Performance time is a time for encouragement...from teachers, peers, family, and audience members.
Being a performer is very important, but attending a performance is equally important for dancers! Being an audience member is a great way to for dancers to connect to the stories and feelings that inspired those dances. Being an audience member teaches audience etiquette. It teaches that even for a soloist there is never just one person involved in the dance. Being an audience member will teach you that there is an unspoken connection between performer and audience that elevates the experience for both therefor resonating in your future performances. There are many more reasons, but lastly being an audience member teaches that there are many more important roles (ex. Costume designer, sound engineer, lighting teach icons, etc.) in staging a show that could inspire a life long career in the performing arts.
As the holiday season approaches, we encourage all of our dancers to attend as many performances as possible. From community holiday festivals to @houstonballet The Nutcracker there are many opportunities this time of year. Thank you @aballeteducation for creating unique and beautiful artwork.
