Today, our mayor shut down schools, and restaurants and bars and theaters, no matter their capacity. Today, my dad’s governor ordered him inside. Today, my girls molded sand side by side in unusual peace, and I kept visualizing this place in August, warm sun etching wrinkles on my face, warm heart engraving happy moments in my head, and easy, anxiety-free breaths in my lungs. Wherever your happy place is, I hope you are there again soon, both in your body and soul—and that until then, the sense memories sustain you. #thistooshallpass #beachwalk #sandcastles #girlsrule #flattenthecurve

There is little #LaReine loves more than the #parenttrap and her friends. In honor of both, tomorrow was supposed to be a special day for my summer birthday girl: a delayed, half-birthday screening of her favorite flick, surrounded by her classmates and old friends, and capped off by an homage-as-party-favor, these hats, which #Hallie wears in the “isolation cabin” scene. Man plans, God laughs. Still, nothing could keep us from wearing these fangirl, ‘90s #feminist hats. Stay careful, joyful, healthy, and human, friends, and if you need an escape, there’s a @nmeyers movie for that. 🧢 🎨 by @michaelleneff #girlsrule

If the Upper East Side were a town, my friend M might be its mayor. From the cool Icelandic novelist to the impossibly well-dressed preschool teacher to the guy growing organic tomatoes in the Guggenheim, she knows and loves all its denizens. That’s why I wasn’t shocked when, as we left her preferred coffee spot this morning, she ducked behind a garbage truck to greet yet another friend: a sanitation worker, all smiles despite the dismal times. “Got any vacation planned?” M asked. I could tell she was hoping her friend might escape the city as COV19 panic spreads. “YES! I am going to Florida on June 29th! Can’t wait!” the woman responded brightly. .... We walked away, and I thought: Panic is privilege. Schools and evening subways might close. Conferences will be canceled. But for many New Yorkers, life will go on as usual. These are the people who make our city, our lives function and whose jobs (and often their day-to-day income) are simply too necessary for them to stay home. Trash will be picked up; food and supplies will be delivered; babies will be born; streets will be cleaned; medication will be dispensed; news will be broadcast. Now is the time for extra cleanliness and courtesy, but it’s also ripe for compassion and generosity. And you don’t have to be the mayor, real or otherwise, to love the people around us who make things go. You can’t hug your mail carrier, nurse, or pharmacist, but if you see them, be like M. A fake fist bump and a smile go a long way. #bekind #weallsharethesamesky #whoarethepeopleinyourneighbourhood 🎨 by @aolanow

Today, my daughter got to be #1, but at nine, she knows already that too often, women are second class or worse. “Why has a woman never been president?” “Why does the U.S. women’s soccer team make less than the men?” “Why don’t girls go to school in some countries or some families?” “Why is it harder for women to be healthy and stay safe?” For these and the other intractable questions she asks today, I pray she has the strength and grit to fight with women for women and make them obsolete tomorrow. #iwd2020 #happyinternationalwomensday #momlife #hockey #champion

“It’s Mini-Munchkin!” our super announced when we entered the elevator. “Yep! Mini-Munchkin’s off to kindergarten now,” I replied as she beamed. “Wow, Mini-Munch! You are going to have to support Mommy and Daddy soon,” he teased. Laughing, she confirmed, “I’m going to support my mommy and daddy!” I looked at her skeptically. “Exactly what are you qualified to do, Miss?” I asked. She glanced up at me, backpack askew but headband just so. It was a look of utter contempt. And then the giggle returned as she yelled, “JUSTICE!” #lareine #justice #girls #momlife #ruleoflaw

And suddenly, the gift from an art teacher my dad loved flooded my mind; we hung it in the living room, near the piano, on a wall since knocked down. In royal blue calligraphy, it read: “There are two gifts we can give our children. One is roots; the other wings.” #roots #wings #balloons #subwayart

So maybe your #boobs have gone full-on National Geographic. Or your once heart-shaped #tush is now a victim of secretary spread. Your svelte ankles are now inseparable from your calves; that #sixpack is now a challah. I get it. .... Today’s buzziest pop star hides her frame under baggy Gucci; she dyes her hair acid green. Her voice oozes longing; her body reveals nothing. I envy that. Because before Billie Eilish was born, I knew women were defined by the sum of our parts, or maybe just one of them. Before Billie, a lunchtime debate about implants became a challenge: If breasts are meaningless, show us yours. Show me the money, I retorted, and I will ... for the charity of my choice. And then I watched in horror as giddy hormones overtook our orderly, oak-paneled lunchroom. Boys in khakis and button-downs dashed from table to table, collecting fistfuls of cash. Breathless, one of them slammed down a wicker napkin holder on my table with hundreds piled high. I chickened out or wised up. I’m still not sure which. (And after @elk1000 talked me off the ledge, we refunded the “donations” to sheepish Supreme Court clerks-in-waiting.) .... My waist in those days was Hepburn-as-Sabrina small. Those days are gone. When I see myself undressed in the mirror now, it feels like I’ve been mugged. But still, I work to silence the cellulite alarm; I remind myself that fat, flat, and stretch have no place in my vocabulary. Why? Because my daughters are watching. Because my loves are listening. .... My parents had Date Night every weekend without fail. And I adored how my weekday mom disappeared into her room on Saturday nights and emerged as a Lovely Creature, steeped in Obsession, eyeliner, and statement earrings. To me, Saturday Night Mom was a vision; she was a huge smile shrouded in equal parts glamour and mystery—and nothing she ever said about herself denied my reality. So knock off the “Do these jeans make me look fat?” and let your daughters believe in your magic; those memories will anchor their belief in their own when self-doubt (or middle age) creeps in. bodyimage #mothers #daughters #momlife #boobs
